Rain didn’t dampen the spirit at the Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk This year’s Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk was held on Friday, October 15, and Saturday, October 16, with sold out performances both evenings. Although the weather did not cooperate, community members still ventured out to hear the spooky tales and enjoy themselves. The efforts of many contributed to make the event a success – greeters, guides, actors, Studio 19 Dance Company dancers, servers, and the Ogden Special Police. Joel Humphrey was instrumental in scripting the ghost stories; without his stories, there would be no Ghost Walk. Refreshments were donated by Spencerport Tops and Brockport Wegmans. Hart Gallery27 hosts Ogden artist’s solo exhibit Jeannine Pelusio will be displaying a variety of watercolors and acrylics at her solo exhibit at Hart Gallery27, 27 Market Street, Brockport. The works will be on display during the month of November, with an opening reception on Friday, November 5 from 6 to 9 p.m.

The exhibit is entitled “emergence,” a reference to what Pelusio describes as, “About becoming, coming out of something.

The show represents my work over the past eight years. I’ve always wanted to create, and painting is the opportunity to bring my feelings to the surface.”

Pelusio says she is inspired 100 percent by nature. “I love to Jeannine Pelusio paint anything I feel I can portray as an environment in itself. It fills my soul to create. I have to express myself. It has to come out somewhere,

and what works for me is channeling it through my paintings.”

Pelusio is owner of Stony Point Studio in Ogden, where she has been teaching drawing and painting classes for the past 15 years to children and adults, as well as teaching classes for homeschoolers.

In the coming months, Pelusio will be expanding her instruction, offering classes and workshops out of her studio space at Hart Gallery27.

Ornamental grasses add lots of wonderful texture, color, and unique movement to the landscape. During autumn, they add a “moody” feel to the garden with rustling sounds as the wind blows through them – very appropriate for this spooky time of year!

Before you plant, however, it is important to understand the growth habits of these versatile and beautiful plants.

Section of Peck Road closed for repairs The section of Peck Road in Parma between Dean Road and Hilton-Parma Corners Road (Rt. 259) closed the morning of October 27 and is expected to remain closed for approximately 10 days while the Monroe County Department of Transportation completes emergency culvert repairs.

The damage occurred during the heavy rain and flooding on October 26 and 27. The road will remain open to local traffic only up to the culvert. The detour is Dean Road, West Ridge Road (Rt. 104), and Hilton-Parma Corners Road (Rt. 259).

Sweden seeks water improvements approval The Town of Sweden has completed the Lake/Redman Road water project significantly under budget, potentially freeing up grant funds to pay for improvements that will be useful for further water expansion projects.

The first $2 million of the Lake/Redman Road financing package is a low-interest loan from Rural Development that property owners in the district must pay back over 38 years.

The remaining $2.3 million is a grant, which if unused, reverts back to the federal government.

The town is seeking permission to install pipe under road crossings in order to maximize the amount of grant money spent here. The project enhancements still must lie within the legal boundaries of the Lake/Redman Road project, even though the improvements may help other future districts.

Sweden is proposing to do crossings at three intersections with Lake Road – at LaDue Road, Beadle Road west, and Swamp Road. It may take a few months to obtain approval from Rural Development and other agencies. The work, if approved, would likely be undertaken in 2022.

“We were fortunate to get a large grant-to-loan award ratio on this project,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “It kept the cost to the district property owners lower than many other Rural Development projects. We were also successful in keeping the project under budget. We don’t want to send those grant funds back to Washington, we want to keep them here to help future water expansion.”

NYSAC supporting veterans with launch of Operation Green Light In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) announced that it was launching a new initiative called Operation Green Light, to encourage homeowners, businesses, and governments to light up their homes, buildings, courthouses, and bridges green in support of America’s veterans the week of November 7. By shining a green light, participants let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

“Operation Green Light is an opportunity to support our veterans and raise awareness about the challenges they face and say that if you’re a vet and you are struggling, please reach out for assistance,” said NYSAC President Martha (Marte) Sauerbrey. “We encourage everyone to join with us in displaying a green light for our veterans and to also reach out to the vets in your life to check in and let them know that you’re with them and that you have their back.”

At their October 20 meeting, the Brockport Lions Club donated $2,000, proceeds from their recent golf outing, to the Brockport Area Vets Club. Operation Green Light is a collaboration between the NYSAC, the NYS County Executives’ Association, and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association and is intended to support veterans of all military conflicts, with a special emphasis on the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. The campaign also seeks to raise awareness about the challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.

Throughout the month of November, NYSAC will be hosting and promoting educational events to raise awareness about resources available to veterans to help them succeed in civilian life.

On November 4, NYSAC will be hosting a webinar on the ETS Sponsorship Program, which helps veterans as they transition back to civilian life by connecting veterans who are finishing their military service with a sponsor who is trained, VA-certified, and dedicated to helping the veterans and their family members.

Of particular concern are the sweet and gooey things like that delicious pecan pie that sticks to your teeth. Chewing on hard candy or ice cubes can result in broken teeth so be careful with those. Also, while “grazing” is sometimes considered a healthy eating style, the continuous supply of food and sugar is more likely to lead to

tooth decay. The same applies to sugary or acidic beverages like soda. The big winner in the “healthy” category is probably the turkey which contains plenty of protein and phosphorous to help strengthen your teeth.

And cheese after your meal helps counteract the acidity of other foods while providing healthy calcium.

Recently a Hamlin Facebook page questioned my allegiance to a political party. My answer is that I have always and will always support whomever or whatever I believe is best for Hamlin. Period.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 racing schedule, both teams returned this season, determined to build on their continued success in previous ECC Cross Country Championships. My wife, Sarah, and I moved to Clarkson in 1996. Our decision was partially based on my experience working as the Front-End Manager at Wegmans in Brockport. I’d worked at several stores by then and noticed the customers and employees were some of the friendliest and hardworking I had encountered. It was the kind of community that I wanted to raise my family in.

My career at Wegmans began in the warehouse. After graduating from Geneseo with a bachelor’s in management, I worked in the stores for five years. The rest of my 38 years have been in Operations Support, Marketing, Pharmacy, Risk Management, and Human Resources. I have extensive budgeting, forecasting, analysis, and management experience that I believe will allow me to provide valuable input serving on the Clarkson Town Board.

I am a fiscal conservative and strong believer in servant leadership. I served 14 years on the board of Camp Koinonia, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening families, including four years as President.

A graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy, a community outreach program, I have established relationships with valuable community resources in the alumni organization.

In March 2020, I became a Planning Board member, and I’ve enjoyed serving in this role. This inspired me to find more ways to make a difference in the Clarkson community.

I am running for one of the two open Town Board positions to give back to this great rural community that I have been blessed to be a part of. I’d be honored to have the opportunity to serve on the Clarkson Town Board and would appreciate your vote on November 2.

My name is Nick D’Amuro and I am running for a seat on the Clarkson Town Board.

I was born and raised in Lewiston, just down Route 104, and attended SUNY Geneseo, where I studied history, education, political science, and was a member of the track & field team. Upon graduation in 2013, I began teaching social studies at the Holley Central School District, where I also coach varsity football and track & field. It was always my dream to serve as a teacher and coach in a small town similar to the one I grew up in, and I take pride in that work each day.

I moved to Clarkson in 2016, and quickly fell in love with the community. My wife, Alexandria, and I welcomed our daughter Ella this summer. Towns like ours are the unique backbone of American society and I am proud to call this place home for my family.

After the 2020 election and reflecting on the current political climate, I weighed a decision to run for office. I had worked on political campaigns in the past, but I wanted to make a real change in my own community.

I hold the belief that local government should be honest, transparent, and dedicated. The exceptional ideas that we are built on as a nation ask local officials to be accessible and straightforward with their constituents, which I promise I will be if elected. The swarm of national politics will always rage, and neighbors may disagree, but here in Clarkson we will seek the best course for our citizens, regardless of party affiliation.

To serve, to work, to represent you would be a wonderful privilege.

I previously served from 2008-2011 but chose not to run for a second term because of job and family priorities.

Back then, I was able to gain the support of enough Republicans, Democrats, and Independents to win a seat on the board, and I did not disappoint them. Now that my kids are out on their own, I’d like to serve again.

My record shows that I have always had the back of the Clarkson residents and taxpayers. As a businessman and 30-year resident, I am fiscally prudent and understand what is important to town residents. In fact, during my term on the board, I was the only one who voted against raising taxes while supporting: safety - voted in support of forming the Brockport Volunteer Fire Department; keeping the town’s rural character; weeding out wasteful spending; promoting small local businesses; voted for public water projects; supported public services like quality plowing and protecting the environment.

There are several goals I am committed to working on if elected. Advocate for “Green Light” to expand into Clarkson to give Spectrum competition. Postpone the 2022 Reassessment until the market stabilizes. It is not mandated by the state, and as it stands, our home values will be determined by an abnormally high pandemic-driven market. With county support, actively pursue a buyer to restore the Garland House Restaurant. Offer a GPS Mobile App allowing residents to track plows. Also, the town has been awarded $780,000 in COVID relief funds. We would lay out the allowable expenditures for residents and encourage feedback on how it should be spent.

With two open town board seats and three candidates running, there is an opportunity to split your vote. Your support will add a board member with a strong work ethic. Please consider me on November 2.

Hilton-Parma Rec brings back Ski Club Hilton-Parma Recreation is gearing up for another snow filled season at Bristol Mountain with six dates booked for the Ski Club. The Recreation Department coordinates the club for the Hilton Central School District and serves students in grades seven through 12 who attend Merton Williams Middle School or Hilton High School.

New this year is the opportunity to ski on Sundays on the following dates: January 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, and February 6.

Participating students would need to be dropped off at the Hilton Community Center where the motorcoach would depart at 8 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. There will be a minimum of three Hilton CSD teacher chaperones for Ski Club.

Prices vary for lifts and rentals along with motorcoach transportation. All Ski Club information can be found on the Hilton-Parma Recreation website at www.hprecreation.org.

Transportation registrations are handled through HiltonParma Recreation, while lifts and rental passes are booked directly through Bristol Mountain. The registration process involves securing transportation first through Hilton-Parma Recreation to see if the required number of students has been reached before purchasing anything with Bristol.

This process is explained on the Hilton-Parma Recreation website. The registration deadline to secure a spot on the motorcoach is November 12.

Opinion Take the time to research ballot propositions I agree with last week’s opinion writer that all New Yorkers should be aware of the ballot propositions we are asked to vote on this November. We enjoy many privileges as American citizens, and we have a responsibility to be informed and exercise our right to vote. Anyone with questions about the propositions can visit a non-partisan website, such as Common Cause New York or Ballotpedia, that will explain them in detail. There is so much hysteria and misinformation around politics, so it is important to use credible sources to research and develop our own opinions.

I find that these ballot propositions are fairly straightforward and common sense. Proposition 1 would refine the redistricting process, including capping the number of state representatives so the future legislators can’t create new districts that favor their party. Proposition 2 would allow New Yorkers to take legal action if their rights to clean air and water are violated (a similar law in Montana allowed citizens to file legal challenges over polluted water dumped in a river). Propositions 3 and 4 would have us join 20 other states that allow same-day voter registration, and 34 other states that allow no-excuse absentee voting. Those absentee ballots would be verified in exactly the same way they are when we vote in-person. I urge everyone to be informed and most importantly, vote in the upcoming election.
