Firefighter Robert Fowler Memorial Highway designation becomes law

Ambassadors from the Village of Brockport and MVP Health Care demonstrate how to use the new Fitness Court.

New MVP Health Care Fitness Court opens at Brockport’s Corbett Park The Village of Brockport and MVP Health Care held a Grand Opening celebration on July 27 for the new MVP Health Care Fitness Court at Corbett Park. The new Fitness Court® is a free, open-air wellness center that allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout. Created with adults of all ages and abilities in mind, the Fitness Court allows users of all fitness levels to move at their own pace, with a seven-movement workout. There is a Fitness Court App that shows how to use the equipment at different levels of difficulty and offers workout challenges. The MVP Health Care Fitness Court is a result of a partnership launched this spring between MVP Health Care and National Fitness Campaign (NFC) to activate public spaces and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Learn more about NFC at www.nationalfitnesscampaign.com. Corbett Park is located at the corner of Smith and Clark Streets in Brockport. Provided information

On July 21, Governor Hochul signed the Firefighter Robert Fowler Memorial Highway bill (A8534) into law which was introduced by Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,I-Greece). Residents will be able to honor the spirit of Fowler’s legacy and heroism for years to come on South Union Street in Spencerport between Lyell Avenue and Nichols Street. Robert “Bob” Fowler exemplified the true meaning of heroism. On February 22, 1997, he and his 15-year-old son responded to a call from Spencerport Volunteer Fire Department during Robert Fowler. Photo from the Naa heavy windstorm. tional Fallen Firefighters Foundation. While he was in his car on the way to the call, a 40-foot tree fell on his car crushing him and barely missing his son. For over 20 years, he willingly gave all he had to protect his beloved community from harm until he lost his own life in the line of duty. State Senator Robert G. Ortt said, “The renaming of a portion of State Route 259 in the Village of Spencerport to the ‘Firefighter Robert Fowler Memorial Highway’ is just one way we can help remind residents of the sacrifices our emergency responders make while serving our communities. The heroism and bravery our first responders display on a daily basis is something we should never take for granted. Although Firefighter Fowler may have given his life in service to our Spencerport community that evening in February, the memory of him and his dedication to protecting us will continue to live on for years to come.” “Today is a special day for the Fowler family, the Spencerport Fire Department, and residents of Spencerport and Ogden, as they can continue to honor Robert’s legacy while driving through the village each day. Bob selflessly put others before himself day in and day out, and it is such an honor to be able to memorialize him,” said Jensen. “We are so thankful to him and his loved ones for their dedicated service to keeping our neighbors safe. It’s a privilege to be able to show this small token of appreciation for our local hero, Firefighter Robert Fowler.” Jensen also introduced two other bills recognizing local fallen heroes, one that would designate a portion of State Route 259 in the town of Parma between Lake Ontario State Parkway and Dunbar Road as Specialist Jason Hasenauer Memorial Highway (A8535A). The other would recognize a portion of Latta Road and State Route 18 in the town of Greece as Sergeant Gary Beikirch Memorial Highway (A10110). The bills passed both the Assembly and Senate and are waiting to be signed into law by the governor. Provided information

Six graduating Monroe County 4-H youth awarded scholarships Each year the Monroe County 4-H Program accepts applications for two different scholarship funds to support learning after high school. The 2022 cohort of students have successfully navigated through inperson, virtual, and hybrid studies and are ready to step to college learning in the fall. The Norman V. Ryan Scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated leadership and community service, and are planning to enter a field of study or employment because of their 4-H activities and experiences. In 2022 one teen was chosen to receive the distinction of the Ryan Scholarship, Hope Avedisian, a resident of Hilton. Hope Avedisian plans to pursue a degree in production agriculture after attending Alfred State. Her 4-H experiences that began as a Cloverbud and culminated as a delegate to the National 4-H Agri-Science Summit, have left her well-prepared, raising Jersey cattle and making strategic genetic decisions for her herd. “It is a constant learning, analyzing, trying something different cycle on repeat,” she said. “One goal that I plan to achieve throughout my career is to be passionate about whatever I do. I want to be proud of the contributions that I’m making to the agricultural industry.” Avedisian participates in educating the community about agriculture by going to shows with her animals and speaking with the public and county legislators at various events. “Being persistent and professional is key,” she said, “you never know how a conversation or participating in an event will have an impact.” The Ralph S. Harper Scholarship chooses students planning to pursue careers in agriculture, environment, home economics, or closely related fields. Five students were chosen to receive the Harper Scholarship – Anna Sumaili, Kadejah Watson, Dayana Gonzalez, Morgan Grandberry, and Ninoshca Irizarry. Anna Sumaili first participated in 4-H through the 4-H UNITY Program at Agape Haven of Abundance and plans to attend Monroe Community College to become a preschool teacher. Born and raised in the Nyarugusu refugee camp in Tanzania, Sumaili paid Anna Sumaili forward the encouragement to thrive she found at 4-H UNITY by volunteering at Agape Haven of Abundance over the summer. “I had an eyeopening experience that led me to realize the responsibilities that I have to help those in need,” she said. She believes that 4-H helped her find the tools to achieve what she wants in the next ten years. Kadejah Watson’s horizons in graphic design have been expanded by her experiences with 4-H. She said, “I hope to continue to spread positivity and advocacy for others through my graphic design by using my art to change the world and make others more aware of Kadejah Watson the problems around us.” Through partnership with the MCC Upward Bound program, Watson was an instrumental educator in the Curbing Our Carbon Appetite lesson that trains teens as teachers of younger youth to support mitigation of climate change. Dayana Gonzalez believes that participating in 4-H through MCC’s Upward Bound program influenced her choice to pursue physical therapy. After participating in the Agriculture Innovators Experience program, Gonzalez said, “I taught an 8th grade class and the participation was one hundred percent. I Dayana Gonzalez

The energy I got was inspiring.” Making these connections, she believes, is key to building the kind of trust needed to collaborate with clients in her future profession. Morgan Grandberry brings both her 4-H experiences and inspiration from her family into her plans to become a nurse by pursuing a BSN. She has presented five times for the 4H Agriculture Innovators Experience, communicating for both English and Spanish speaking audi- Morgan Grandberry ences, and participated in the Choose Health Action Teens (CHAT) program through the collaboration between 4-H and MCC Upward Bound. She said, “While teaching, I learned that patience with myself and others is needed in order to remain focused on the objective, and to make sure that everyone feels heard.” She believes this interpersonal resilience will serve her well in the field of nursing. Ninoshca Irizarry’s passion to become a criminal justice lawyer has been strengthened by the community relationships she has grown within 4-H. She explained, “My 4-H experience influenced my future career because it made me realize that I enjoy helping those in need and that don’t get heard like young children Ninoshca Irizarry and victims.” Through 4-H participation at MCC’s Upward Bound program, she participated in the CHAT program and in Project S.O.W. (Seeds of Wonder), learning and teaching in equal parts about intentional engagement in healthy living. She said that both experiences taught her the importance of patience and “to treat things with love and care.” She has also been a Youth Organizer and Youth Ambassador through Teen Empowerment. “It is a pleasure to have these teen leaders stepping into higher education to continue learning, growing, and achieving their goals. In reviewing applications and talking to these youth, the positive impact of their 4H experiences is astounding. We wish them all the best as they navigate their future education and career goals and look forward to having them return as 4-H Volunteers,” shared Susan Coyle, Monroe County 4-H Program Leader. The Monroe County 4-H Program is offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension to the youth of Monroe County. 4-H is a worldwide youth development program open to all youth aged five to 19, who want to have fun, learn new skills, and explore the world. In return, youth who participate in 4-H find a supportive environment and opportunities for hands-on or “experiential” learning about things that interest them. Community Picnic & Flea Market at St. George’s St. George’s Episcopal Church is hosting a Hilton-Parma Community Picnic & Flea Market on Saturday, August 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year, St. George’s is expanding their Flea Market fundraiser into a Community Picnic “fun”raiser. They see this as an opportunity, in this challenging world, to spread the love of God by providing a fun, inexpensive day for all to enjoy, especially families with children. The day will be filled with fun activities, including a Flea Market and Book Sale so people can come and browse for a few treasures. Hot dogs and water will be provided free of charge. Children can enjoy a free Bounce House (open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and a mini horse for petting. There will also be lawn games, like cornhole, Nerf badminton, and a ladder toss. The church sanctuary will be open for quiet reflection, and tours of the church and an explanation of the Episcopal

tradition will be offered periodically throughout the day. Parishioners of St. George’s have a great desire to share the love of God with everyone and to serve the HiltonParma Community. This can be seen in their Community Garden that produces about 1,000 pounds of vegetables every summer for the Hilton Emergency Food Shelf, their “Loss, Grief, and Healing Support Group,” and Blue Christmas Service for those who have suffered the loss of a loved one. The church is inclusive in nature and is a Safe Place for those in the LGBTQ community. All are invited to bring family and friends to spend a couple hours enjoying St. George’s hospitality, meeting neighbors, and sharing in the love of God. St George’s is located at 635 Old Wilder Road, Hilton (across from Kelly’s). To rent a vendor space at the Flea Market, call 585392-4099. Provided information

Donate blood for a chance at gas for a year Just as most cars need to be refueled constantly, so does the nation’s blood supply. The American Red Cross has faced a concerning drop in blood and platelet donations this summer. Donors are needed to make an appointment to give in August to help prevent a blood shortage. The decline in donations has caused the Red Cross blood supply to shrink nearly 20% in recent weeks. The availability of blood products will continue to decline if donations do not increase. People should not wait until they hear there is a blood shortage to give. Type O negative blood donors and platelet donors are especially needed now. “This is a concerning trend that may soon make it tougher to keep blood products stocked on hospital shelves,” said Paul Sullivan, Red Cross senior vice president of donor services. “By choosing a time to give now, donors can help pump up the blood supply for those in immediate need of lifesaving care and those who rely on transfusions for treatment.”

Donors can schedule an appointment to donate using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood. org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). As a thank-you, all who come to give in August will be automatically entered for a chance to win gas for a year, a $6,000 value. There will be three winners. Everyone who comes to give blood or platelets in August will also receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of choice. (Terms apply. Visit rcblood.org/fuel for details.) Upcoming blood donation opportunities: •August 4, 1 to 7 p.m., Brockport UMC, 92 Main Street South, Brockport; •August 5, 1 to 6 p.m., Ogden Community Center, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport; •August 12, 1 to 6 p.m., Brockport Firemen’s Exempt Club, 248 West Avenue, Brockport. Similarly today, no new automobile or high-rise office building gets the go-ahead without the use of scale models to assist in the design work and secure approval from management. Building scale models is a hobby as well, and finds work in a range of scales that reduce locomotives, buildings, ships, and scenery to convenient size. However, as size gets smaller so do the details. This calls on the skills and creativity of the modeler to reproduce these details at a level that passes close scrutiny. When recreating a historic vehicle or scene, care also must be taken to accurately recall correct colors and markings, often requiring extensive research through photographs, library files, and even museum visits. The New York Museum of Transportation offers several operating model railroads to augment the ROC City Scale Modelers’ show. It also features full size trolley cars, highway and horse drawn vehicles, a steam locomotive, and the Midtown Plaza Monorail. The museum is located 20 minutes south of Rochester at 6393 East River Road in Rush, one mile north of Rt. 251 (I-390 exit 11). For information, visit www.nymtmuseum.org or call 585-533-1113. The annual RDGA Junior Championships concluded Tuesday, July 19, at Wild Wood Country Club, with champions crowned in three age-based divisions for both boys and girls. In the RDGA Boys Junior Championship (for players ages 15 to 18), 16-yearold Connor Kiel jumped out to an early lead on Monday with a score of 1-over-par 72. In Tuesday’s second round, Kiel slipped a little - finishing with a 4-over-par 75 - but was able to hold off a strong challenge from runner-up Tyler Stark, who posted the low round of the Championship, an even-par 71, on Tuesday. Kiel, whose father is Midvale CC Head Professional and past RDGA District champion Mike Kiel won the 2022 title by one shot at 5-over-par 147. In the RDGA Girls Junior Championship (for players ages 12 to 18 competing over 36 holes), another first-time RDGA Junior champion was crowned - 13-year-old Harper Dittman. The consistent Dittman posted back-to-back rounds of 6-over-par 78 for a 156 total to stay just ahead of runner-up Ava LaBelle, who had rounds of 79 and 81 to finish 4 shots back at 160. For Dittman, a veteran of the Local U.S. Kids Golf Tours each spring and fall, this was her first RDGA Championship title of any kind. In the RDGA Boys Sub Junior Championship (for players ages 12 to 14), one third of a family threesome of golfers entered into this year’s RDGA Junior Championships

stood out among his fellow competitors. 14-year-old Barrett Paolini, whose twin sisters Reagan and Reese were also entered into this year’s Championships, posted rounds of 79 and 74 to finish at 11-over-par 153 to claim his first RDGA Championship title by 9 shots over runner-up Tyler Burcett. Paolini was also the youngest player to make the 36-hole cut at the 2022 RDGA District Championship last week at the Country Club of Rochester. The RDGA Girls Sub Junior Championship (for players ages 12 to 18 competing over 18 holes) witnessed a veteran RDGA title winner capturing her third RDGA Championship at just 12 years of age. Emily Zigrossi - sister of four-time RDGA Girls Junior and Pee Wee champion Julia Zigrossi - posted 9-hole scores of 43-46 for an 18 hole total of 89 to finish 8 shots ahead of Destiny Jodoin. In so doing, Zigrossi accomplished something that her sister never did - win a title in both the Pee Wee and Sub Junior Divisions. Speaking of the 10year-old Paolini twins - Reagan and Reese Paolini finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the RDGA Girls Pee Wee Championship (for players ages 7 to 11). Playing 9 holes each day, Reagan posted back-to-back 44s for an 88 total. She finished 6 shots ahead of her sister Reese (who posted scores of 46-48 for a 94 total) to become part of the first brother-sister duo to win RDGA Junior titles in the same year. In the RDGA Boys Pee Wee Championship, 10-year-old Maksym Babak took charge of the competition, posting back-to-back 9-hole scores of 37 for a 74 total. Babak outpaced his nearest competitor, Jack Durbin, by 42 shots to claim his firstever RDGA Championship title. Provided information and photos

Collaboration results in Rotary Sunshine Camp marketing initiative A 100-year-old summer camp for children with special needs is getting a new jingle, with help from some friends in the community. It began as a radio show and blossomed into a special gift for the Rochester Rotary Club’s Sunshine Camp, an inclusive summer camp that includes accommodations for children with special needs. WHAM TV Anchor Don Alhart, a longtime Rotarian, serves as chairman of the Sunshine Camp’s 100th Anniversary Committee. As a featured guest of the “No-Nonsense Roundtable,” a radio show hosted by Dom Genova that airs Saturdays on WHAM Radio 1180, Alhart often mentioned his work with the Rotary and the Sunshine Camp. It was after one of these shows that Alhart suggested Genova and his wife visit the camp. “I’ve had Don on my show a number of times and each time, either off mic or on air, he would tell me about his passion for the Sunshine Camp,” Genova said. “A few months ago he says, why don’t I set up a tour with (Rotary Executive Director) Tracey Driesbach so you can see for yourself?” Genova and his wife, Nita, joined Driesbach for a tour and the two were blown away, he said. “We saw personally what Don was talking about,” Genova said. “Being a ‘fella’ with a marketing persuasion, I believed

they needed to get the word out and music branding is a great way to do that.” Genova reached out to Rochester Music Hall of Famer Chuck Brucato, a friend he calls the “Dean of Rochester music branding.” Brucato, who has written jingles for dozens of local businesses including Sea Breeze, Jines and several car dealers, worked with the Rochester Rotary team to come up with something cheerful for the Sunshine Camp. Genova and his wife donated the jingle to the Rotary. “As Dom learned who benefits from the camp – the families come free of charge – he began to see that everybody needs to know about this,” Driesbach said. “He really thought the jingle would be a great way for us to do that.” Driesbach worked closely with Brucato to come up with a jingle that was upbeat and catchy like the rest of his work. “When I hear this jingle I picture kids sitting around a campfire eating s’mores,” Alhart said. Brucato said he had fun working on the project with all those involved. “I’m a very fortunate man. I have a beautiful son, a beautiful daughter and an incredibly beautiful grandson,” Brucato said. “To be able to do something for children who are less fortunate than my family is incredibly heartfelt for me. And for Dom and Don Alhart and Tracey and a bunch of people who

“When you plant a seed you don’t necessarily see the tree grow,” Alhart said of Genova’s involvement in getting the jingle made. “That’s what he’s done.
