newsmakers The following area students have been cited for academic achievement for the spring 2016 semester by achieving the dean’s list at the State University of New York College of Technology at Delhi. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher within the semester. •Brittany Davide of Spencerport, hotel and resort management •Casey White of Brockport, hotel and resort management Cailand K. Sweeting of Hamlin has been selected for inclusion on the dean’s list for academic achievement during the spring 2016 semester at St. Lawrence University. Sweeting is a member of the Class of 2017 and is majoring in psychology. She attended Camden Hills Regional High School. To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must have completed at least four courses and have a GPA of 3.6. Rochester Institute of Technology celebrated its 131st Academic Convocation in May. Local residents who graduated include: •Emily Hopkins of Churchville, who received an ACT and MS in school psychology from RIT’s College of Liberal Arts. •Eric Reese of Churchville, who received a BS/ME in mechanical engineering from RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. •Rachel Triassi of Rochester, who received a BS/MS in physician assistant from RIT’s College of Health Sciences and Technology. Daniel J. Walter of Hamlin completed his graduate studies at SUNY Oswego in spring 2016 with a master of science degree in chemistry and was recognized in May at the college’s commencement.

Elizabeth Maffett, daughter of Steven and Cecilia Maffett of Spencerport, achieved dean’s list with honors with a GPA of 3.70 - 3.99 at The College at Brockport for spring of 2016. She also was awarded Class of 1961, Wilbur H. Adriance Memorial Scholarship. The following local residents graduated from UMass Lowell in spring 2016: •Ronald Short of Rochester, who received a bachelor of science degree in information technology •Joseph Buechler of Scottsville, who received a bachelor of science degree in information technology. Michael DeFranco of Spencerport has been named to the Champlain College dean’s list for the spring 2016 semester. Students on the dean’s list have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the semester. DeFranco is majoring in Game Design. The State University of New York at Fredonia recently announced scholarship recipients for the 2016-17 academic year. Scholarships are made possible by private donors and foundations, most of whom made gifts to the Fredonia College Foundation. Among the new scholarship recipients are the following area students: •Ariana Perez of Churchville, a senior majoring in Communication Disorders and Sciences, has received the Fiat Lux: Let There Be Light Scholarship for $1,925 and the Gustave and Geraldine Werner Scholarship for $2,852.68. She is the daughter of Anthony and Marianne Perez. •Katherine O’Hara of Rochester, a junior majoring in Social Work and Sociology, has received the Ann James Manly Scholarship for $1,000. She is the daughter of Stephen and Wendie O’Hara.

Alyson Mancuso of Spencerport earned dean’s list status for the spring 2016 semester at Wentworth Institute. She is majoring in architecture. Alyson is a 2015 graduate of Spencerport High School. Daniel Alexander, son of Honorable Richard and Nancy Alexander of Parma, graduated with a B.S. from Cornell University in May 2016. While at Cornell, Daniel was honored as Academic AllIvy and was a three-year starter for the Big Red’s Varsity Sprint Football team. He earned first-team all-conference honors in football and the Paul Hunt graduating senior Citizenship Award. He was also active in fraternity and, upon graduation, joined M&T Bank’s Management Development Program in Buffalo. Daniel is a 2012 graduate of Hilton High School. The following area students have made the dean’s list for the 2016 spring semester at Le Moyne College. in the service Major General Anthony P. German, the Adjutant General of New York, announced the recent service accomplishment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their initial commitment to serve community, state and nation. Pvt. Zackery Fedeli from Rochester, completed the Army’s rigorous basic combat training and advanced individual training, culminating with a ceremony held July 10 at the Patriot Way Armory in Rochester to mark start of training with his new unit, Company D, 427th Brigade Support Battalion. The ceremony marks his completion of the National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program, a preparatory training program that provides new recruits with training, lessons and skills to excel at their initial military training. The soldiers will now embark on their traditional National Guard service to state and nation as part time Citizen Soldiers.
