Byron-Bergen community spreads holiday cheer On December 11, 2023, volunteers from the Byron-Bergen Faculty Association (BBFA) made their list, checked it twice, and made sure everyone received something nice. These holiday helpers filled shopping carts with over $10,000 of merchandise to assist local families in need. For many years, district teachers, staff, and administrators have worked together with local partners to make the season merrier in the Byron-Bergen area. The annual Holiday Giving Project aims to ease holiday stress for members of the Byron-Bergen community. This year, the BBFA collected donations from faculty, staff, and individual community members to purchase gifts for 99 kids from 43 local families. Community groups also “adopted” families, raising the total reach to 117 kids from 51 local families. “The Holiday Giving Project really is a community effort,” said ByronBergen Faculty Association President Ken Gropp. “We are so glad that this yearly endeavor can brighten the holiday season for our students and community.”
The hard work of the BBFA did not go without the notice of Superintendent Pat McGee. “I am so thankful our district prioritizes the support of students and families. It was my pleasure to work with our Board of Education to create a formal resolution showing our appreciation for the outstanding dedication of the BBFA.” At the opening of the Jr. High School Winter Concert on December 14, McGee and the members of the Byron-Bergen Board of Education honored several BBFA members with the following resolution: WHEREAS, the Byron-Bergen Central School District’s mission is to inspire, prepare, and support using the values of compassion, humility, kindness, and persistence with the vision to change the world one student at a time; and WHEREAS, the Byron-Bergen Faculty Association Holiday Fund helps individuals and families in our community in need; and

Lifespan needs respite volunteers in Hilton and Brockport areas Lifespan’s caregiver services support families caring for family members with Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss. Often, caregivers in these situations can use some free time to grocery shop, take a walk or meet a friend for lunch. Volunteers provide free time, also called respite, for caregivers. There is an ongoing need for respite volunteers in the Hilton and Brockport areas. Lifespan will train volunteers, provide support and match them with a
caregiver near them. Those who have a few hours a week are asked to call Lifespan at 585-244-8400, ext. 192 to learn more about becoming a respite volunteer. Lifespan is a regional nonprofit organization providing information, guidance and services for older adults and caregivers. For the first time, jazz pianist Parker Story will collaborate with St. Luke’s singers in “A Very Jazzy January” on Saturday, January 6, at 7 p.m. The free event promises exciting collaborations, new discoveries, and old favorites. Parker Story, a Rochester native, will kick off the evening with a solo set that includes jazz songs such as Milt Jackson’s “Bag’s Groove,” Rodgers/Hart’s “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” and Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” Guitarist and vocalist Rudy Dean, Jr., will sing an original tune, “Dream Away My Blues,” alongside classics like Johnny Mercer’s “Dream” and The Beatles’ “And I Love Her.” Collaborating with Jess Moss and Ben Monacelli, Dean will offer beloved standards such as Harold Arlen’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Last but not least, St. Luke’s Schola Cantorum will join Parker Story in a set of jazz classics for small choir, creating a unique fusion of instrumental and vocal artistry. Parker Story, a graduate of Roberts Wesleyan University, studied piano with Professor Joe Werner and Professor Emeritus Dr. Michael Landrum, and jazz improvisation with Michael Van Allen. Tenor Ben Monacelli studied voice at Ithaca College, graduating with a degree in vocal jazz studies in 2020. Since then, he has performed as a soloist with the

Moss maintains a thriving voice studio and teaches piano as well. Rudy Dean Jr. is a solo guitar instrumentalist and vocalist specializing in vintage jazz. His full-length performances include soft rock, country and bluegrass. He is a native of Manhattan, and has lived and
played in Florida, Arizona, California and Oregon. He now resides in Brockport. This concert is made possible through a generous grant from the Brockport Arts Fund of the Rochester Community Foundation. John L. (Larry) Smith went home to be with his Savior on December 22, 2023 after a short illness. He is survived by Bonnie, his loving wife of 62 years, his children, David (Gigi), Julie Hunt (Ken Schaible), Laurie (Peter) Boyd, six grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Larry graduated from Bob Jones University in 1961 and married Bonnie a month later. He worked at Eastman Kodak for 27 years and in retirement enjoyed a career as a home health aide. Larry served His Lord faithfully, most recently as an elder at Grace and Peace Fellowship. There will be no calling hours or service at this time. A celebration of life will be held in March. He is predeceased by his stepfather Lawrence Lowe, his brother David Mandigo, and many precious friends including his ex-wife and forever friend, Darlene Mandigo Willett. NYS Parks Centennial Challenge 2024 marks New York State Parks Centennial, and with it, lots of reasons to celebrate. As you head out on your next adventure to a New York State park or historic site, you are invited to take on the Centennial Challenge. New York State Parks has come up with a list of 100 activities to give you a chance to get outdoors and discover state parks, to learn more about New York State history at historic sites, and to give back to preserve all of its properties for the next generation. Not sure you can complete all 100 activities in a year? That’s okay. The goal is to complete 24, after which you’ll earn a commemorative Centennial prize, as well as an entry into a random drawing for one of 24 threeyear Empire Passes and a Centennial swag bag. Take the Challenge on the go by downloading the Goosechase app from either the iPhone or Android app store. Create an account then search for “NY State Parks Centennial Challenge” to join and start collecting points. Prefer the tried-and-true method of
pen and paper to track your Centennial Challenge progress? Opinion/Comments Riga Rec Christmas happenings On Saturday, December 16, Riga Recreation held its annual Christmas Concert celebration at the Raymond C. Adams Cobblestone Hall. Mr. Erik Reinhart from the Churchville-Chili High School Music Department led his Varsity Vocals singers in Christmas arrangements to ring in the Holiday Season. This event was well attended and guests were treated to a very special afternoon! On Monday evening, December 18, Riga’s “Secret Santa” and his elves, Ryan, Matt, and Sue, along with
“Winston The Wonder Dog” sleighed the “Roads of Riga” in search of uniquely decorated homes. Once these were determined, Santa presented homeowners with gift certificates purchased from local businesses. Chili Presbyterian awards scholarship to recent graduate The First Presbyterian Church of Chili honored a member of its Church Family, Pauline Smith, on December 10, 2023. She currently works at URMC in Pediatrics, Outpatient, as a Community Health Navigator for infants, newborn to six months. She is also working on her Lactation License. Pauline recently graduated with her Associates Degree in Business Health Administration from Eastern Gateway Community College. Her future plans are to attend SUNY Brockport, working toward a degree in Social Work and Business Health. GCV&M announces big plans for the total solar eclipse on April 8 Genesee Country Village & Museum, in Mumford, has announced plans for four days of festivities (April 5 through 8) leading up to and including the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, when the living history museum is in the path of totality. The largest museum of its kind in New York State, GCV&M will offer a number of once-in-a-century experiences for the total solar eclipse centered around how Americans historically experienced and interpreted eclipses and astronomical happenings. Explore 19th-century citizen science hands-on, attend a magic lantern show, learn about women in the sciences, pose for a souvenir tin-type photo, taste eclipse-themed historical treats from the Confectionery, interact with costumed historical educators, see how farm animals react to totality, and delve into religious fervor of the 19th century. David Crumb, historian for the Village of Hilton and Town of Parma, talks to Michael Heise’s third grade class at Village Elementary School about local ties to The Underground Railroad. He was accompanied by his grandson, Joe Walsh, a fourth grader in Brighton, who shares his grandfather’s interest in history.
Local historian teaches third graders about The Underground Railroad On December 19, David Crumb, historian for the Village of Hilton and Town of Parma, visited Michael Heise’s third grade class at Village Elementary School in Hilton for a presentation on The Underground Railroad and its local ties to Hilton. Mr. Crumb answered general questions about the Underground Railroad, then talked about the some of the “safe houses” found along the 104 corridor and their importance due to the proximity to Canada. Mr. Crumb was accompanied by his grandson, Joe Walsh, a fourth grader in Brighton, who read the class information about William Still, an African American abolitionist based in Pennsylvania, and
a conductor of the Underground Railroad responsible for aiding and assisting at least 649 slaves to freedom towards the North. Mr. Crumb also gave students each a laminated article about the historical marker recently placed at the north end of Route 259 in Parma. The marker recognizes the spot where Walter Vond, the son of Hilton’s first African American family, helped slaves escape to Canada during the 1850s.
