Greece writer publishes second mystery novel Jeff Thrall previously served as Director of Transportation at Churchville-Chili CSD by Barbara Burke

Annual Brockport CSD Art Show goes virtual Brockport students in grades K-12 will showcase their art skills to the community during BCSD K-12 Art Celebration Showcase. The Brockport Central School District Art Show is an annual tradition that has been held each spring for over 30 years. Traditionally, the school hosts the event at SUNY Brockport. However, due to continued health and safety precautions, the show is being held virtually this year to celebrate the work students were able to continue during the COVID19 pandemic. The elementary schools, Oliver Middle School, and Brockport High School are creating slideshows and videos to highlight the outstanding work of student artists. That artwork will be included in a showcase that is available on the district website (https:// www.bcs1.org/news/what_s_new/b_c_s_d_k12_art_ celebration_showcase). Work specific to each building will be shared on the individual school websites, as well. The show will remain available on the district and school websites through the end of the 2020-21 school year. “Although we are unable to celebrate in person, we’re so pleased to be able to showcase our students’ artwork again this year in a virtual format,” says Art Department Chair Mary Warth. “Thank you to the entire Brockport community for your continued support of the visual arts.” As in traditional school years, select pieces of artwork received awards from the department. The virtual exhibition will put the spotlight on the visual arts throughout the district and uphold the high standards set every year with in-person exhibitions. Provided information and photo

Jeff Thrall has lived in Greece since he was five years old. He has been writing stories since he was a little boy. “My mother pushed me to read and to work on my writing. She was a farm girl from Wisconsin who really enjoyed books. She felt writing would help me throughout my entire life, and she was right. My father also thought I was a good storyteller. After he passed away, I published my first novel, The Reunion, in 2005,” Thrall said. Although Thrall has been writing for most of his life as a hobby, he really started to work on publishing his books after he retired. As a young man, Thrall was in the Coast Guard. After leaving the Coast Guard, he worked 23 years for the Greece Police Department as Chief of the Special Police Auxiliary Department. The Special Police are trained as a Police reserve unit used as extra manpower for special events, emergency services, traffic control, and security. He retired from the Greece Special Police in 1999. From 1990 through 2004 Thrall studied at SUNY Brockport, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry and General Science, his Masters Degree in Education and a degree in School Business Administration. Thrall taught Science for a few years and decided that he wanted to work in administration instead of in the classroom. He said, “I’m really not a numbers guy; I enjoy working with people.” He left the classroom and took a job as a part-time school bus driver. Thrall worked as a bus expeditor/driver at Greece Central School District from 1990 to 2006, working his way up through the ranks. In 2006 the position of Director of Transportation for the Churchville-Chili School District opened, and Thrall applied for the job. “The job of Director for Transportation is like being the principal of the school buses,” he said. Thrall supervised a department of 130 employees, 103 school buses, and was a mediator for transportation issues that came up. Thrall retired in 2019 from Churchville-Chili School District. After his retirement, Thrall really concentrated on publishing his books that were written throughout his working days. His writing process over the years has been very simple; he writes on Saturday mornings for about four hours. He has written four books in his series, with The Reunion, which he self-published in 2005, being the first. Thrall’s second and newly published novel, The Superintendent, is part of his four-book series. The novel is described as: “A new mystery novel featuring murder intertwined with political intrigue in the military. After a Navy superintendent is seriously wounded trying to stop an attack on a young girl, decorated Navy SEAL and Navy intelligence officer Jonathan Summers is tapped to take his place. Although he’s ready to retire, he is pressed into service for this one last assignment. Summers soon finds himself embroiled in all the politics surrounding the admission of one of the academy’s newest

Additionally, he is thrust into an ongoing investigation of a series of murders that are linked to the shooting of the academy superintendent. Summers faces demons from his past that could turn his career upside down while watching an increasing body count in an expanding investigation. With a manipulating politician and a serial killer both setting their sights on him, Summers must maneuver through his assignment without dishonoring the institution he now runs.” “Readers looking for a story with action and continuing suspense will enjoy the surprises that come with the turn of each page,” Thrall says. He adds that he hopes for readers, “To have enjoyed their escape into the world of Jon Summers and his friends.” Writing novels is not Thrall’s greatest challenge; he says getting published is difficult. “The frustrating thing is trying to get published. Publishing is so restricted, just the number of books and clients looking to be published are immense. I self-published my first book. For The Superintendent I ended up going with the pay-to-publish route. I took a web course in writing and publishing. I learned so much by just doing my homework and research. I suggest to writers out there looking to get published, don’t get frustrated, just keep trying. I found that in working with a publisher, I learned a lot about the publishing business. Working with editors really improved my writing skills. I am taking what I have learned from this experience, and I am going to re-release my first book, The Reunion, improving it with all that I have learned.” Although the four novels that Thrall has written are a series, he says you do not need to read them in order to understand them. The novels build on the individual characters and their stories. The fourth book in the series is actually a prequel. As for Thrall’s future writing endeavors, he says, “I will keep writing as long as I can. I have other ideas and different characters to develop. I write because I love it. I want people to enjoy the story, and for me, that is the reward. And if they want to read the next one, I’m happy.”

First annual Home Food Preservation Day a success The Monroe County community was invited to join Certified Master Food Preservers (MFP), Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (CCE-Monroe) program educators, and members of the CCE-Monroe Board of Directors for a cool but sunny morning on May 1 at the CCE-Monroe office. Michele Conners, CCE-Monroe MFP volunteer envisioned and organized the event that drew residents from all parts of Rochester and Monroe County. Master Food Preservers, Michele Conners, Judy Price, and Barb Brenner were on hand to answer questions, provide free pressure gauge testing, and demonstrate the art of fermenting. CCE-Monroe staff and volunteers provided helpful information such as where to find local U-Picks, how to ensure nutritional meals, and gardening advice. The 4-H Youth Development program provided a hands-on garden craft for youth. We even noticed some adults enjoying creating their own garden “kindness” rock. Canning jars of all sizes, recipe books, canning supplies, and pectin were available for sale. “The Home Food Preservation event was a wonderful way to connect with our home gardeners. Those who attended the event were eager to get their gardens organized and planted for the upcoming growing season. The Master Gardeners received great questions from transplanting and dividing fruit bearing bushes to planting different varieties of sweet corn,” said Ashly Piedmont, Master Gardener Coordinator. Visitors were able to discuss and ask questions about 4-H programs and experiences throughout Monroe County. Aside from the opportunity to learn more about the Monroe County 4-H Youth Development Program, visitors were invited to create kindness rocks and garden stones,” said Destiny Draggett, AmeriCorps VISTA. “Attendees seemed

to really enjoy the variety of topics and discussions they were able to have while walking around to the different [educational and demonstration] tables,” Agriculture Educator Jarmila Haseler said, “Small fruit generated a big interest! It was wonderful to see community members enthusiastically sharing their berry growing experiences. Most discussions involved strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, but there were also some in-depth talks about less known fruits like elderberry or currants. It was a great opportunity to chat and compare notes. Those who didn’t garden received a Berry U-Pick Guide to help them find fresh fruit directly from local farms this summer.” “As someone new to agriculture, food production, and everything in between, I learned a lot of information. I thought I needed more space, knowledge, and even equipment; I found out I can easily do things at home. It was great speaking with the experts and getting to know them and seeing how much they love their work. I certainly am trying some of the recipes given and even going to a Upick farm this year,“ said Edgar Santa Cruz, CCE-Monroe Board of Director. CCE-Monroe is ready to support local food preservation enthusiasts this year; they have jars and pectin available for sale throughout the growing and canning season: 8 oz. cases, pint cases, 4 oz. cases, Sure-Jell Regular Pectin and Sure-Jell Low Sugar Pectin. Call 753-2550 ext. 0 to place an order and set a time to pick up supplies (cash or check only). Local orders only, no drop ins. For more information about safe food preservation practices and to find some recipes from Michele Conners, check out the CCE-Monroe Master Food Preservation Blog at http://monroe.cce.cornell.edu/ nutrition/food-preservation-blog. Join astronomy experts to view eclipse There will be a deep partial solar eclipse on Thursday, June 10, 2021, and the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) is hosting a sunrise eclipse viewing to mark the occasion. When the Sun rises at 5:31 a.m. on June 10, it will appear as a crescent because most of the Sun will be hidden by the new moon. For Rochester, the eclipse will reach a maximum at 5:38 a.m., with 78 percent of the Sun hidden. After that, the moon will slowly uncover the Sun. The eclipse is over for Rochester at 6:37 a.m. Join RMSC staff members and knowledgeable volunteers from the Astronomy Section, Rochester Academy of Science, for free, eye-safe viewing with projected images of the eclipse. Equipment and experts will be stationed at Hamlin Beach State Park, Parking Area 4, and Martin Road Park in Henrietta (weather permitting). This is a family-friendly event, and visitors of all ages are encouraged to participate. It is recommended that attendees arrive before sunrise. This partial solar eclipse can also be viewed anywhere in

this region that you can see the ENE horizon (58 degrees) at sunrise. Eye protection is always needed to look directly at the Sun. Solar viewing glasses are on sale at the RMSC gift shop, open Fridays through Sundays. For those who don’t have glasses or a telescope with a solar filter, the RMSC is offering eye-safe projected images of the eclipse at these viewing locations. Check RMSC.org/eclipse for schedule, updates, and directions. RMSC also recommends checking the website the night before the eclipse for up-to-date information regarding weather conditions. Hilton seventh graders learn lifesaving skills; earn Red Cross certification Seventh graders at Hilton’s Merton Williams Middle School are learning skills that could someday save someone’s life. As part of their health curriculum, the students are learning American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED training, and can become certified in all three after passing the skills test. In its first year, the training is made possible thanks to Megan Conway, Claire Drexler and Anna Murrer, middle school health teachers, becoming American Red Cross certified state instructors. Once the teachers became certified, the school district purchased three sets of equipment that each

include an adult manikin, child manikin and automated external defibrillator (AED). The teachers also have access to resources for the entire course, including instructional videos. Students are learning how to respond to a variety of medical emergencies until medical professionals arrive, including administering an EpiPen, performing abdominal thrusts for choking, and stopping severe bleeding. The cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training is giving students the information and the skills they need to help adults, children and infants during breathing and cardiac emergencies. And they are learning how – and when – to use an AED. “This is a really good unit to be learning,” said Elio Conway. “Otherwise, if a family member or child fell and was injured, how are we supposed to know how to keep them alive?”

Merton Williams Middle School Teacher Claire Drexler shows her class how to perform CPR.

Hilton seventh grader Kiley Gordon practices her CPR skills. The manikin has lights that indicate the proper depth and speed of compressions.

Gavin Parina, seventh grader at Merton Williams Middle School, checks his manikin’s pulse and breathing before beginning CPR.

“The training helps motivate people to take action when there is an emergency and makes our community a safer place,” said Ayden Jarvis. Drexler said that the goal is to have every seventh grader certified by the end of May. The eight-hour training normally takes two weeks, but with in-person classes limited due to the hybrid scheduling, the training is taking five to six weeks. Students must pass both written and skills based tests to become certified. The usual $40 fee is reduced to $5, which the district is funding.

Once the student passes, they receive their certification card through email and can have it laminated in the school library. “The certification is for two years, so our vision is to offer the recertification training in ninth and eleventh grades,” said Drexler. “This is something everyone should learn,” said Catarina Umbrino. “If you don’t, it could cost someone’s life. You never know, one day you may have to save someone.” Provided information

Gypsy Moth Update/Beech Leaf Disease by Kristina Gabalski

ous insecticides are available at garden centers and are divided into two general groups: microbial/biological and chemical. The microbial and biological pesticides work best on small, young caterpillars. The most common is Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). It is harmless to people, animals, and plants but does affect young moth and butterfly larvae. Caterpillars eat the Bt, become paralyzed, and die. Chemical pesticide options are contact poisons. Please remember they can impact many beneficial and native insects and should be used wisely. Professional pesticide applicators can be brought in for this job. Be on the lookout now for small back caterpillars in your trees; they will grow in size quickly over the next few weeks. Another threat to our trees is beech leaf disease (BLD) which is affecting and killing both native and ornamental beech tree species. The DEC says this disease has only been discovered in recent years, and much is still unknown about the full cause and how it spreads. The symptoms include striping of the leaves, curling of the leaves, and/or leathery leaf texture, which can be easily noticed by looking up into the canopy of the tree. Infected leaves eventually wither, dry, and yellow. The DEC says that as of last September, beech leaf disease had been found in many Western New York counties, including Livingston, Wyoming, Orleans, and Niagara. Right now, there is no known way to control or manage the disease, but the DEC is working to identify infested stands, to monitor the disease severity and progression, and is also researching possible methods of spread.

The gypsy moth infestation hitting our area continues this spring as tiny black caterpillars emerge and begin devouring new leaves. Whether you battled them last year or are seeing damage for the first time, here is an update on the situation. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says that the elevated population of gypsy moths caused noticeable defoliation in Central and Western New York last year, but also notes that one year of defoliation will likely not kill trees. The DEC explains that the gypsy moth is a non-native insect that was brought here from France in the mid-19th century in the hopes that it could be bred with silkworms to create a silk industry in the U.S. The gypsy moth caterpillars failed as a silk producer, and some escaped, establishing their first U.S. population in Massachusetts. It is important to understand that gypsy moth populations are cyclical - their populations rise and fall. Some years there are large numbers, other years, their damage is barely noticeable. The DEC says that the moths have naturalized in our forests, meaning that they will always be around. Gypsy moth caterpillars, which you are starting to see now, consume the young, tender leaves of spring. Deciduous trees that lose their leaves in the fall are capable of withstanding two to three years of defoliation without being killed. The defoliation can weaken the tree and make it susceptible to pests and diseases, however. Gypsy moths can kill evergreen trees, which have more difficulty regrowing their leaves. Look for loss of needles near the top of the tree, which progresses downward. Right now, the black gypsy moth caterpillars have hatched from eggs laid last summer. They will grow to about 2.2 inches in length and have five pairs of raised blue spots followed by six pairs of raised red spots along their backs. The DEC notes that tent caterpillars can look similar to gypsy moths and also feed in the spring. Gypsy moth caterpillars can be killed in low numbers by squishing them, and egg masses can be scraped from trees and other structures and dropped in detergent. Additionally, the caterpillars are eaten by some birds, rodents, parasites, and diseases. Spraying is an option for large infestations, the DEC says. The Knights of Columbus Spencerport council honored Father Richard Brickler (at right) as he celebrated 60 years as a Priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester. Father Brickler has served as the council chaplain for the last 26 years. He is also the former pastor of St. Boniface Church on Gregory Street in Rochester, where he served as pastor for 28 years. Father Brickler has reached senior priest status but is still very active in ministry in the dioceses. The Knights had a prayer service led by Father and then presented him with an honorarium and a cake to thank him for his lifelong service to the church, the Knights, and the community on his anniversary. Shown above (l-r) are Mike Flanagan, Ray Ehnot, Hermann Unvericht, Larry Peck, Lee Arbegast, Father Richard Brickler, Dick Gallagher, Jeff Lambert Grand Knight, and Dave Hodder. C-C senior a 2021 Young Women of Distinction Award Winner The Women’s Council, a Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce affiliate, announced the recipients of its 22nd annual Young Women of Distinction Awards at a virtual celebration on Tuesday, May 18. The scholarship program supports the Women’s Council’s belief that young women with promise today will become tomorrow’s leaders. The four top recipients, one each from the Rochester City School District, Monroe County east, Monroe County west, and the eight regional counties surrounding Monroe, receive a $2,500 scholarship, while other finalists receive a $500 scholarship. The 2021 Young Women of Distinction honorees are Kaitlyn Sipes (ChurchvilleChili HS), Selin Akbas (Pittsford Sutherland HS), Carys Carr (World of Inquiry School #58), and Alicia Livermore (Naples HS).

Kaitlyn Sipes

Kaitlyn Sipes is a senior at Churchville-Chili Senior High School. She is a dedicated student, ranking sixth in her class and achieving the Highest Honor Roll all four years of high school She is active in many school organizations, serving as the president of Executive Council, secretary of National Honor Society and Business Honor Society, and also has served as the secretary of Bible Club. Outside of school, she is an active participant in her church and youth group, which has given her many volunteer opportunities and has allowed her to participate in Flower City Work Camp for two years. She is also a member of a competitive dance team and works at a local daycare. She is described by her teachers and peers as thoughtful, motivated, and a natural leader who maintains a positive attitude. Kaitlyn will be attending Grove City College to pursue a career in non-profit marketing. Other finalists from this area included Alexia Nelms (Hilton HS), Maggie Schultz (Brockport HS), and Callie Updike (Holley HS). Modeled after the ATHENA Award, the Young Women of Distinction program is designed to discover high school seniors who have displayed outstanding leadership, academic excellence, and involvement in the nine-county Rochester and Finger Lakes region. The Rochester Oratorio Society has announced that it will host a virtual symposium of music, expert discussion, and personal histories centered around Ernest Bloch’s “Sacred Service.” The symposium will take place June 7, 8, and 10 and is free to attend. Pre-registration is encouraged. “From 1911 to 1951, Bloch produced seven seminal works on Jewish themes,” said Eric Townell, artistic director of the Rochester Oratorio Society. “Sacred Service has become a cultural icon alongside the great sacred works of other traditions by Handel, Haydn, Beethoven, and many others. Its message is one of hope, survival, unity, and reassurance for all. We’ll expand the discussion to include personal histories of migration to Rochester’s neighborhoods during these formative years.” The symposium will feature special

guests Cantor Isaac Assor, Lisa Kleman, Hazzan Randall Levin, Dr. Klára Móricz, and Rev. Dr. C. Denise Yarborough and will be moderated by Eric Townell and Mona Seghatoleslami. This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Genesee Valley Council on the Arts. The Rochester Oratorio Society is preparing to perform “Sacred Service” in the fall as part of their upcoming 2021-2022 season, and the symposium will include the chance to hear a preview in the form of rehearsals. C-CHS Varsity Cross Country Coach Paul Glor said, “I have really enjoyed working with Keegan over the past four years. He is extremely motivated and disciplined. He

was able to do a nice job balancing several sports with school and community activities. Keegan is a role model for his peers and has always done an excellent job representing our program. His leadership will be missed next year. I know he will be very successful in college.” C-CHS Varsity Track and Field Coach Dennis Pynn said, “Keegan is a quiet leader. He works harder than any other distance runners on our team. I know his work ethic, character and drive will make him very successful at the next level. We look forward to watching his career for the next four years.” The Thomas M. Nichols Award honors a

The Byron-Bergen long jump record holder, Veronica Duell, has signed to continue her track career at Saint John Fisher where she plans to major in biology and work toward her goal of becoming a dentist. Duell, a sprinter and a jumper, currently holds the Byron-Bergen school record in the long jump at 17 feet 1.75 inches, which she set on May 10, 2019. “She is a mentor to many of our younger athletes who aspire to have successful track careers like her,” said girls varsity track coach Ken Rogoyski. “Veronica gives her all at every practice and every meet. Veronica is definitely one of our superstar track athletes!” Duell runs the 100 and 200 and competes in the long jump and the triple jump. She also has a crucial role in the 4x100 relay team. She has been named a Genesee Region League All-Star in Track and Field and is a team captain. Duell chose Saint John Fisher because of the sense of community on the track and in academics. “The campus is small, beautiful,

close to home, and their biology program and coaches are absolutely amazing,” said Duell. “I would like to thank my family for going to all of my meets during my high school career and all of the amazing people that have Veronica Duell signed to coached me (special shout- compete for Saint John Fisher. out to Coach Photo by Susan Kuszlyk. Hilton Central School District’s teaching staff spent a beautiful Saturday morning on May 15 volunteering throughout the community on what is known as Teacher Care Day - an annual event in May that gives teachers the opportunity to give back. After meeting at Hilton High School, groups headed out to various sites, including St. Georges Episcopal Church and Hilton United Methodist Church, where volunteers spruced up the landscaping, and Tops Plaza where staff collected donations and filled a bus for the Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf. Back at the High School, staff sorted the many donations that were collected at each of the schools in the days prior. Provided information and photos.

First Presbyterian Church of Chili and Boy Scouts partnering on a Labyrinth Trail journey The First Presbyterian Church of Chili has created partnerships over the years with the Boy Scout Troops who meet in the church building. Their most recent partnership project has been the creation of a Labyrinth Trail with Ian Ruhland, an Eagle Scout candidate. The church owns a seven-acre plot of land at 3551 Chili Avenue (on the south side of Chili Avenue, southeast of Chestnut Ridge). When the church began having conversations about what to do with the land that would be of benefit to the community, the idea of a labyrinth trail rose to the top of the list. Tim Engelbrecht, a member of the church and Scoutmaster for Troop 275 took this idea and created a plan. After presenting the idea to Ian, he decided to take it on as his Eagle Project. When Pastor Brandi Wooten came to the church 13 years ago, she talked about Labyrinths and her interest in them as meditation tools. Labyrinths are intentionally not mazes. They are a continuous path which weaves back and forth in a pattern, moving ever closer to the center of the circle. This is intended to represent our spiritual journeys in that our journey has many twists and turns, the path is not always straightforward, but all our experiences can move us toward God (the center). Beginning last spring, Ian and Tim, along with the support of Troop 275, friends, and family, found a 160-foot radius of land that would work for a labyrinth project. They decided to create five concentric rings that were separate from each other and split the circle into four quadrants. They worked

their way out from the center to complete all five, used paces to measure and spray painted the general path on trees (trying to follow deer paths). To create the map for the completed project, Tim used the “Map My Hike” app and then pulled it up in a Google Maps satellite view. Starting at the actual beginning of the labyrinth, not the road, gave them the mileage of the labyrinth itself - one mile. The scouts cut all the brush using lopers, chainsaws, and bow saws. Tim used a mulcher to grind up a portion of the cut brush, and the Town of Chili delivered two dump truck loads of town mulch, which they spread on the trail. After the trail system was done, Ian needed to complete requirements for his Geocaching Merit Badge. So, he decided to use the property to place a geocache and continues to maintain it. Since being placed, the geocache has been found and used several times. Plans for the Labyrinth Trail continue, as beginning this spring, another Boy Scout, Michael DeBona, will start his Eagle Scout Project of making benches which will be placed along the trail. The church also has plans to make a sign for the entrance to the trail, create a small parking lot for ease of access, and place bird houses, painted rocks and other meditative items along the way. Everyone is welcome to take advantage of walking the path and enjoy the journey in nature through the Labyrinth while enhancements continue to be made. Provided information
