ROCopera, a new opera collection, was created to broaden opera’s reach in the Rochester area by reimagining and reinterpreting existing classical vocal music through a contemporary lens; by promoting new works for the classical voice; and by bringing opera out of the concert hall and into everyday spaces. The goal is to create opera that is with, by, and for the people of Rochester.

ROCopera is the brainchild of three professional opera singers. Elisabeth HallidayQuan, Soprano, works with established and emerging composers to commission and premiere new classical vocal repertoire. She is co-founder and artist of the New York Citybased commissioning opera ensemble Rhymes With Opera and trained at the Peabody Conservatory. Heather Holmquest, Soprano, is a singer, music theorist, and voice pedagogue who has established herself as a sacred and early music specialist. She is the soprano choral scholar at Third Presbyterian Church and trained at Knox College and the University of Oregon. Kerri Lynn Slominski, Soprano, dominates the stage with commanding force, delightful comedic timing, and continues to create memorable performances throughout the United States and Italy. Trained at the Peabody Conservatory and Boyer College of Music and Dance, she strives to make opera accessible to all generations by providing “no-holds-barred” experiences.

Together, these women have assembled a growing team of local professional opera singers and instrumentalists, creating a regional opera collective. ROCopera will

be both a producing organization and a mechanism for promoting and supporting the work of local artists.

ROCopera is making their company debut virtually with their twist on an MTV classic - Total Request Live [TRL]: Opera Edition!

– a virtual concert at the 2020 KeyBank Rochester Fringe Festival (September 15 through 26) via rochesterfringe.com. To help engage the Rochester community and make opera accessible to all, ROCopera’s concert is a free event with online donations gratefully accepted. ROCopera wants their audience to have complete control over what is performed. They would like the audience to vote for their favorite opera arias using an online voting link, https://forms. gle/o8Nyv1rdveXUqLEYA. The link can also be found on ROCopera’s social media pages. Voting runs through September 10. In true TRL fashion, the top most requested arias will be revealed when the virtual performance drops online. ROCopera has unlimited streaming for their performance, so it can be viewed anytime during the festival.

Total Request Live [TRL]: Opera Edition! will feature singers Pablo Bustos, Tyler Cassidy-Heacock, Juli Elliott, Elisabeth Halliday Quan, Heather Holmquest, Nicholas Kilkenny, Kerri Lynn Slominski, and pianists Alex Kuczynski and Lee Wright.

Rochester Invitational croquet tournament held in Hilton In a year of U.S. Croquet Associationsanctioned tournament cancellations due to the pandemic, this year’s Rochester Invitational segued to a one-day, singles only tournament to draw in more regional players at a lesser entry fee. With Tyler Hathaway flying in by gyroplane from Clermont, NY, south of Albany, there was a field of 11 players vying for the limited edition watercolor prints this year.

Paul Neubecker, of Buffalo, swept block play undefeated in Championship Flight.

While handily winning against Rich Laging, of Rochester, 22-12 in block play, with permission of Tournament Director Rich Curtis, the two elected to skip their second game of block play and go directly to finals play. Lighting up the courts in finals, Rich Laging won 26-15.

In 1st Flight, Bob Gannon, of Buffalo, went undefeated in block play and maintained his perfect record, winning finals 18-16 against Peter Sherer, of Rochester.

The real surprise of the day was in 2nd Flight. A newcomer to the sport and never

having played in a USCA tournament, Beth Nash, of Spencerport, lost 16-26 and 11-26 to Bill Vrooman, of Lewiston, in block play, only to take first in finals against him with a 23-22 defeat.

The tournament was hosted at the Rochester Croquet Club, a sports ministry of First Bible Baptist Church, and played at the Grace & Truth SportsPark in Hilton. To play or for information, visit RocCroquet. org or call 474-3753.

Jon Rahm named July 2020 Hickok Belt® Award Winner

Elisabeth Halliday-Quan, Heather Holmquest, and Kerri Lynn Slominski are the creators and artistic directors of ROCopera.

Professional golfer, Jon Rahm, has been named the Hickok Belt ® Award winner for the month of July 2020. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The voters selected Rahm based on his victory at the PGA Tour Memorial on July 19, 2020, held at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. He achieved his official “Number One” World Golf Ranking at the first major of the year. After a stellar performance, Rahm finished the victory with rounds of 69, 67, 68, and 75 shots, finishing at 9-under 279. This was Rahm’s tenth professional career victory, his fourth on the PGA Tour. He was greeted by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, tournament host, with a hand-fist at the final tournament 18th green.

Other finalists for the month of July in order of how the NSMA voters ranked them were: Shane Bieber (baseball), Kevin Harvick (auto racing), James Harden (basketball), Matt Olson (baseball), Brian Goodwin (baseball), Vergil Ortiz (boxing), Scott Dixon (auto racing), Lewis Hamilton (auto racing), and Serpentine (Jockey, Emmett McNamara - horse racing).

Jon Rahm’s selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for July 2020 recognizes him as “the best of the best” in professional sports and makes him the fourth candidate eligible to receive the overall Hickok Belt® Award for 2020, joining Dustin Johnson, Tyson Fury, and Patrick Mahomes.
