Hilton kindergarten class connects with Marine veteran

Students in Annmarie Young’s kindergarten class at Hilton’s Village Elementary School made a special connection in honor of Veterans Day this year. Through the miracle of technology, the class was able to learn about life as a U.S. Marine thanks to a virtual visit from Kyle Christensen, retired Marine corporal; father of Carter, a student in Young’s class; and son of Marianne Christensen, retired Hilton teaching assistant.

Mr. Christensen talked to the students about his different uniforms, the countries he’s visited, what Veterans Day means to him, and how he didn’t meet Carter until three months after Carter was born because he was serving overseas.

“What an amazing opportunity to connect with a real veteran and wonderful to see how proud my student was of his father,” said Young.

Mr. Christensen suggested the class virtually visit some troops overseas to cheer them up over the holidays. Young, a proponent of distance learning, offers her students many opportunities to connect with real-life experiences around the world.

Holley sixth-grader collects donations for animal shelter The Orleans County Sheriff ’s Animal Shelter received a large donation from a Holley Elementary student.

For three weeks, Josmar Hernandez, a sixth-grader, collected donations from Holley staff and students to give to the Orleans County Animal Shelter.

Josmar’s love for animals, especially dogs, prompted him to start collecting items that the shelter could use. Over 300 items were collected, including dog and cat food, toys, bedding, and cat litter.

Josmar wanted to come to the shelter to visit the animals, but due to COVID-19, that currently isn’t allowed. Undersheriff Michael Mele and Animal Control Officer Airel Ambrose along with friendly dog Weson visited Josmar at the school.

All items donated will be used at the shelter to provide the animals with a happy stay while they are waiting to be adopted.

GTC opens public review and comment period for draft Public Engagement Plan The Genesee Transportation Council (GTC), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region, is making the draft Public Engagement Plan available for public review and comment through January 4, 2021.

GTC’s Public Engagement Plan (PEP) guides the public, GTC staff, member agencies, and sponsors who administer GTC-funded projects and programs through the public participation aspects of transportation planning projects.

All GTC planning work products, as well as major amendments to adopted plans and programs, are incorporated into the PEP. “Meaningful and effective participation is essential to the successful implementation of a public plan, project, or program, and is necessary to ensure the needs of the local community are adequately addressed,” GTC Executive Director Jim Stack said. “We strived to provide consistent guidance to manage expectations, but also leave room for flexibility to customize plans for different situations.”

Selecting and caring for real Christmas trees

by Kristina Gabalski Are you putting up a real Christmas tree this year?

Artificial trees have many benefits, but the scent of a real Christmas tree in your home, the holiday adventure of heading out to find the perfect tree, and the appeal of buying local and supporting local growers are all great reasons why people purchase real Christmas trees. If you’ve never “gone natural” before, or haven’t done so for many years, it might seem like a lot of extra work and not worth the effort, but here are some helpful tips from Michigan State University Extension to help make the process memorable and successful.

Before you head out to purchase your real tree, make sure you know the spot in your home where you will set it up. Keep it away from heat sources such as furnace vents and fireplaces to prevent the tree from drying out faster. Make sure you have adequate floor space for the height of your tree. The taper of real trees can vary, but the ratio of tree width to height is usually two to three - meaning a six-foot tree will need a space about four feet in width. Remember, trees out in the open appear smaller than they will in your home. Measure the height of your ceiling and measure the height of the tree before you cut or purchase.

When buying a real Christmas tree, there are two options: pre-cut and choose-and-cut. You can purchase pre-cut trees at many locations - big box stores, garden centers, and freestanding tree lots, to name a few. MSU says precut trees are typically grown on large farms that specialize in wholesale production. Trees are harvested and shipped to retail outlets. Choose-and-cut farms tend to be smaller tree farms where you can wander fields of trees and cut the one you choose.

If purchasing a pre-cut tree, do the pull test. Pull on the end of a branch gently with your thumb and forefinger. A fresh tree will hold on to its needles. If the tree loses needles when you pull, keep looking. If you cannot put your real

Before placing your fresh tree in its stand, cut one inch or so off the base. Christmas trees are conifers that have resin canals in their trunks. When the tree is cut, the resin will start to block some of the pores and slow water uptake.

A fresh cut will help increase water uptake by your tree and keep it fresh longer.

When setting up your tree, MSU says you will need at least two people to help with a traditional, screw-in stand.

Place the stand on the bottom of the tree before you stand it up. Have one person adjust the tightening screws on the stand while a second person adjusts the tree. It can help to have at least one more person to stand away from the tree and check for straightness. Keep the bailing twine on the tree until it is in the stand and upright. This will keep the tree compact, making it easier to bring inside the house and situate on the stand.

Keep your real Christmas tree well-watered. This is the most important part of keeping your tree fresh throughout the season. Cut Christmas trees can absorb up to a gallon of water a day, depending on trunk diameter. Make sure your tree stand has sufficient water capacity for your tree, and check the stand every day. Don’t let the water level fall below the level of the trunk bottom. According to research, plain fresh tap water is best - no need to add any “home remedies” to the water such as sugar, aspirin, bleach, or lemon-lime soda pop. Enjoy the beauty and majesty of your real tree!

Hilton hosts first virtual Model UN Conference After 40 years of hosting a Model United Nations Conference that drew students from nearly three dozen school districts, Hilton High School created a virtual event so students could still participate during the pandemic. The student-directed event provides debate opportunities for both new and experienced high school delegates.

“Thank you to the Secretary-Generals, Selin Akbas and Robbie Daly; and the Under-Secretary-Generals, Andrew Guo and Isabela Mulcahy. You have handled the challenges of organizing a virtual Model UN Conference with grace, maturity and professionalism, all while balancing the uncertainties and changes of life during a pandemic,” said Martha Burke, who along with Sandra Mayer coordinated the event for the first time this year.

This year’s Model UN Conference was represented by four secretaries, 35 chairpersons, 13 committees and Zoom hosts, 18 schools, 38 nations, and 223 delegates.

The committees students chaired are based on actual UN committees that debate proposals, present position papers and vote on resolutions. Schools select the country/countries they want to represent and delegates prepare before the conference by researching that country’s stand on issues and current problems.

“This year, the perseverance required to put on a virtual conference is a testament to the group of young adults and faculty advisors involved,” said Hilton High School Principal Dr. Jeffrey Green. “Collaboration among multiple school districts and multiple members of the Hilton Central staff overcoming countless obstacles to plan is a truly inspiring thing to be a part of.”

In addition to being an opportunity to learn and collaborate with students from other schools, Model UN raises funds for charity.

Students normally sell carnations and compete in “Jar Wars” to see which committee could raise the most money for a charity, but this year students were asked to donate directly to three organizations serving the Rochester community during the pandemic – Pencils and Paper, Mothers in Need, and Lifespan.

GCC’s Encore 2020 celebration goes online Many celebrations are being postponed or canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic this season. Leaders are encouraging people to stay home and avoid large events and gatherings. However, for nearly 30 years, The Genesee Community College Foundation has welcomed the holiday season by hosting Encore, and global pandemic or not, Encore will go on.

For months, GCC has been working with its sponsor, Tompkins Financial, to ensure that the critical scholarship funds generated through the Encore event do not become another loss to the Coronavirus pandemic.

by T.R. Hendrick Here in Western New York the deer gun season has been open for a week and from here on out our whitetail deer morph from a large flesh and blood mammal to ghosts. You know they are there because you see their tracks but they aren’t visible. The hunting goes from good to extremely tough. Most deer by now have had an encounter with a hunter either by catching their wind, hearing them shoot, or a visual meeting. If they survive that meeting, they will head for the thickest cover in the area and most will not move again until after dark. Especially the big old boys who bury deep in the thickest cover they can find and become completely nocturnal the minute they hear the first shots ring out.

Now the question in most deer hunters’ minds is, “Do I sit on stand in one spot knowing that chances are the deer won’t move all-day or do I get a group of hunters together and make them move?”. The purists will say to sit quietly in a tree or ground blind and hope; it is sacrilege to disturb the woods in such an obnoxious manner. But the meat hunters will say that if the deer aren’t moving, get into the thick cover and force them to move. This, by the way, does benefit the stand hunters as the drivers get the deer stirred up in all directions helping every hunter in the area.

One of the biggest problems for hunters who decide to push deer, other than the safety issue, is all the posted property there is in this area. Almost every acre of good hunting ground has yellow signs hanging on its borders. The challenge is finding out who owns the property to ask permission.

There is a fantastic smart app out now, ONX Hunt maps, and for $30 a year it not only shows you the property borders, it will also tell you who owns that block of land and provide the property owner’s address.

Even with the landowner’s address, getting permission to gun hunt someone’s property for deer is the hardest hunting permission of all to obtain. Most landowners will tell you they have had a bad experience when they did allow people to deer hunt their land, making it all but impossible to break that stigma and get the okay.

In many cases, the successful groups of deer pushers are from small townships and know everybody who owns land for a fifty-mile radius. If you can get in with an established group of drivers, you’re all set; but be careful hunting with people you do not know. Remember that you are literally trusting those people with your life. I know that sounds dramatic, but you must be able to have complete faith that the hunter next to you will not shoot in your direction if a deer jumps out of thick cover and runs between you.

In my early hunting career, I got in with a group of deer drivers. This was a sketchy lot to say the least, and this crew bent the game laws like a politician bends the truth.

Over the years, the organization has helped distribute thousands of coats to children in need.

Provided photo. troop had six of us pile in the bed of his pickup truck and said: “On this next spot I’m just going to slow down but not stop. You guys jump out, one every thirty yards, and cut right into the woods quickly. If you hear anyone yell just keep moving.” I naively asked, “You do have permission to hunt here, don’t you?” “Sure, sure kid…just get moving when you hit the ground.”

Thinking back on it now, I must have been crazy. I didn’t know half of those guys and they had my life in their trigger finger.

Whatever way you decide to hunt, be safe. No deer is worth someone’s life. If you decide to drive deer, know who you are hunting with. Wear orange and if you shoot, know your target! There is nothing about a human that looks like a deer. I want to believe that it is rare that hunters mistake each other for deer. They can’t be that dopey, can they? I believe most accidents happen when a deer comes between hunters and they get so excited they shoot at the deer without being aware of what’s behind it.

Most hunters see that deer, their adrenaline kicks in, and that’s all they see. You must always know what is behind your target.

If you miss, that bullet or slug is going to travel a long distance.

I know, “Thank you, Captain Obvious,” but every year someone shoots when they shouldn’t and ruins their life, not to mention the life of their victim.

Other common accidents happen when hunters shoot themselves while climbing in and out of a tree stand or over fences without unloading their gun. Another common spot is back at the vehicle when somebody mistakes an empty gun that is still loaded.

If you treat every gun like it is loaded all the time, this will never happen.

All that being said, if everyone follows these commonsense rules it is a safe sport.

Now get off the couch, throw on some warm orange clothes, and go harvest some tasty venison. If prepared correctly, it’s the best red meat you will ever eat.

•Van De Wetering , John E.,Ph.D., age 93, died November 2, 2020. John was president of SUNY Brockport from 1981 to 1997. He previously was the president of Eastern Montana College in Billing, MT, and before that was department chair and professor of colonial American history at the University of Montana in Missoula. John was born January 20, 1927 in Bellingham, Washington. He was the son of John Van de Wetering and Jessie (Straks) Van de Wetering. He attended college in Seattle at the University of Washington. There he discovered his love of history, and went on to earn a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate, all in history. John loved Rochester and the surrounding area.

He lived here longer than he lived anywhere else in his life, nearly 40 years. John is survived by his brother Lee, his wife Maxine, his son Josh, and his grandchildren, Mayah and Noah. His brother Bob preceded him in death.

Maxine Zimmer (Peters) Riga - Thursday, November 19, 2020 at age 96, surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Chester.

Survived by her daughters, Nada (Dwight) Rogers, Charleen Zimmer and Joan Zimmer; grandchildren, Susan (John) Squires, Sharon (Paul) Tanner, Sarah (Rob) Brutovski, Timothy (Catherine) Rogers, Esther (Gene) Baker, Mark Beltt and Eric Beltt; 13 great-grandchildren; beloved niece, Janet (Tim) Breen; several other nieces and nephews.

Maxine was a longtime member of the Free Methodist Church and had served as a home missionary in the Kentucky mountains with her husband. She always lovingly served others with her gifts of creativity and handiwork.

John “Jack” Wadhams John “Jack” Wadhams: Jack, born in Brockport, the son of S. Edwin “Ted” and Gladys (Hoch) Wadhams, peacefully passed away on October 20, 2020 at the age of 84. He and his wife of 61 years, LouAnne (Rogers), moved to Port Charlotte, Florida in 1986.

After high school, Jack attended Oswego State College to earn his Bachelor’s Degree and continued at Brockport State College to complete his Master’s Degree. He taught Industrial Arts at Kendall Central High School for 30 years and was also the director of the Mask and Wig Drama Club. Jack was an officer in the Brockport Police Department and the NY State Parks Police and retired at age 80 as a Code Enforcement Officer for the NY State Park’s Western Region based out of Letchworth State Park.

Jack was a member of the Silsby Hose Company of the Brockport Fire Dept. and a charter member of the Ambulance Corps. He served as Master twice as a member of the F & AM Monroe Masonic Lodge #173, and was a member of Kendall Social Lodge #713. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop #111.

Jack was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, teaching all children through example to respect all people, be kind and generous and to do the right thing. He enjoyed all theatre, cooking and woodworking and was an avid Yankees and Cleveland Browns fan.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart, LouAnne and their children: Mark (Jennifer) and their children Ella and Evan; Beth (Jay) Petrino and their daughter, Sienna; Jill Nine (Ken Van Epps) and her children Kaitlyn and Eric; and Jodi Suares (Ron Middleton), her son Tyler; friend Antonio Suares III; as well as cousins and many special friends.

A Memorial Service was held November 7 at the First Presbyterian Church, Port Charlotte, Florida. A Celebration of Life is being planned but the date and time is yet to be determined. •Beehler, Gary C. Sr., died November 20, 2020 as a result of a tragic motor vehicle accident. He is predeceased by his wife Dorothy. Gary is survived by his children Kimmie (Ken) Pruner, Lori (Jon) Roat, Gary Beehler Jr. (Rose Glazier), grandchildren and a great grandson. Since his retirement from Rochester Products, he has spent his time traveling to Steam Pageants in his RV, golfing, bowling, repairing forklifts, tractors, and any mechanical equipment farmers or small businesses needed assistance with.

He was also part of the Wiser Racing Pit crew at Limerock Speedway.

•Seneway, Agnes, died November 12, 2020. Predeceased by her parents Thomas and Helen Seneway and brother Tom. Aggie is survived by sisters Anne (Paul) Marcucci and Jean Seneway; brother Jim; his daughter Lissi (Ray) Blanchard; Tom’s daughter Carrie (Nick) Rodgers-Falascino and their son Danny; many cousins, good friends, and neighbors. Aggie was a dedicated educator in Hilton Central School District since 1971, serving as a classroom teacher, administrator, and member of the board of education. She served as president of the teachers union for several years.

Aggie taught classes and supervised student teachers at SUNY Brockport. She earned degrees from Mercyhurst, SUNY Brockport, and Nazareth; including her doctorate of education in 2017 from the U of R while battling cancer. She dedicated her life to teaching and advocating for every child. She believed a smile could change the course of someone’s day. Her smile lit up the sky.

Opinion A message from the NYS Sheriffs’ Association Since the first COVID-19 orders issued by the New York State Health Department, Sheriffs across the state have been responding to thousands of complaints of violations of those orders. They have been doing what they can, within the law and the Constitution, to address those complaints. The criminal laws have very limited applicability with respect to those complaints, and in most cases, use of the criminal laws would be unwise. Fortunately, our citizens have, for the most part, willingly complied with advice and encouragement to follow health directives. We think that is the best approach, and we continue to advise and encourage all our citizens to comply with guidance issued by state and federal health agencies, and to exercise caution and common sense. So far, that approach seems to have worked, helping New York achieve one of the lowest infection rates in the country – without having to apply heavy-handed law enforcement tactics.

Recently, Governor Cuomo issued an Executive Order limiting “non-essential private residential gatherings” to no more than ten individuals. That has caused great consternation among many of our citizens, who envision armed officers arriving at their doors to count the number of people around the table. Many Sheriffs and other law enforcement leaders have felt compelled to allay those concerns by assuring citizens that officers will not be randomly coming to their homes to count the number of people inside. That would be neither practical nor Constitutional. The Governor has responded by dismissing those serious concerns on the part of local law enforcement, saying, “Law enforcement officers don’t get to pick and choose which laws they will enforce.” We find that comment ironic and disingenuous since the Governor has directed that his own State Police do not have to enforce the order. Apparently, it is another case of “do as I say, not as I do,” such as we have seen with many other political leaders. He has also called Sheriffs “dictators” for following the Constitution rather than his orders, which we also find ironic.

We do not know if the Governor’s limit on home gatherings to ten individuals is the right number or not. That is a decision for science, not us, to make. We do know, however, that the Governor has attempted to foist upon local law enforcement an impossible task. How are officers to know, without violating citizens’ right to privacy and other Constitutional rights, how many people are in the home?

How are they to determine if the family gathering is to be deemed “essential” or “non-essential”? If twelve people normally reside in the home, are the officers to order two of them to move out? If eleven individuals are found to be present in the home, who is to be charged with violating the order, all eleven or just the last guest to arrive? Or is it only the homeowner who is in violation? Are officers really supposed to arrest guests who don’t stay six feet apart or who fail to have on their face masks during dinner?

All of those are serious questions which make it impossible for law enforcement to know how to legally enforce the Governor’s order. They are questions that could have been addressed if we had a functioning State Legislature, creating clear and enforceable laws after input from those who would be impacted by them. Instead, we are faced with an unenforceable dictate issued without any consultation with law enforcement or the public as to enforceability.

We believe that rather than issuing orders that cannot be practically enforced, and then blaming law enforcement when they are not enforced, the Governor would better serve the people of New York if he were to use his position to encourage citizens to use common sense and voluntarily adhere to the guidance of state and federal health officials.

We would gladly join him in that. We know the citizens of our communities, and we believe they would be far more likely to voluntarily follow his recommendations than his orders.

In conclusion, we urge all our citizens to keep informed on the best steps to take to protect themselves and others from the spread of this terrible disease. We urge you to listen to our public health officials. We urge you to limit your exposure to those outside your household as much as you reasonably can. If we all do that, we will sooner be able to get back to normal. We in law enforcement have neither the resources nor the legal authority to force you to do those things. It is a matter of individual responsibility, and we are confident that you will all voluntarily rise to the occasion.

SUNY Brockport dance faculty share their talents during Virtual DANSCORE The SUNY Brockport Department of Dance is now streaming this year’s Virtual DANSCORE. The concert is available on an on-demand basis through December 26.

Though the event is free, patrons must register online at fineartstix.brockport.edu to receive the link to view the performance. Donations will also be accepted at the ticketing site. Patrons may contact the Tower Fine Arts Center box office for guidance at 395-2787.

The concert includes five pieces involving the department’s faculty. The works include Jim Hansen’s “Fault Lines,” “Dundun Fare” by Jenise Akilah Anthony, and “Hill Sky,” conceived and created by Mariah Maloney. There will also be a new work from Tammy Carrasco, “Momentary Landing,” choreographed by guest artist Janessa Clark, and featuring a performance by Brockport associate professor Stevie Oakes.

Given the parameters the pandemic has set on teaching and performing dance (and many other performing arts),

Maloney - for one - took to the outdoors. For “Hill Sky,” she had ten dancers engage in an improvisational practice as they responded to their natural environment. They would follow Maloney’s prompts, such as “run along the shadows on the grass like a serpentine.” They explored the texture of the trees, the light, and shadows cast on the hill, and then explored what it felt like to free fall and run down a hill.

“Dundun Fare” is another expression of how Anthony explores the African Diaspora in her work. She set the work against the traditional music of “Dundunba,” as played by the Griot Drum Ensemble. Anthony’s dances are a way for her to “prioritize cultural exchange and passionately focus much of my work on providing equitable, inclusive spaces for the community to engage in shared cultural experiences through movement.”

American Heart Association launches Heart of Rochester campaign The American Heart Association is going “beyond the table” to further the commitment of the annual Rochester Heart Ball. Instead of a single event, the Heart of Rochester campaign will extend to a three-month campaign bringing the work of the American Heart Association to life in our community.

“We usually come together each year for a beautiful Heart Ball. Now, because of the COVID pandemic, our community needs us to step up in an even larger way,” said American Heart Association Executive Director Marc Natale. “Our

vision for Heart of Rochester is to expand the mission of the traditional Heart Ball. Instead of just one night, we want to highlight the work the American Heart Association does all year-round with a focus on our five lifesaving pillars.”

The five pillars of the American Heart Association’s work include COVID-19 research and response, women’s health, patients and chronic conditions, healthy living, and ending tobacco use and vaping.

Throughout the three-month campaign, participants will have opportunities to learn more about the work being done

locally in each of those pillars, as well as various ways to give to the campaign both corporately and individually.

Heart of Rochester officially launches on December 1 for Giving Tuesday and runs through February 28, the end of American Heart Month. Plans for a celebration event will depend on American Heart Association, state, and federal guidelines at the time.

Social Security offering online video hearings The Social Security Administration is offering a new service for people awaiting a hearing decision. In addition to telephone hearings, Social Security now offers the opportunity for an online video hearing using the Microsoft Teams platform. This new free service allows applicants and their representatives to participate in the hearing from anywhere they have access to a camera-enabled smartphone, tablet, or computer. This stable and secure online platform allows the Social Security judge to see and interact with applicants and their representatives, just like an in-person hearing, while maintaining the privacy of the claimant’s information. Other hearing experts, such as medical or vocational experts, may participate as well.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of finding new ways to serve the public,” said Commissioner of Social Security Andrew Saul. “For over a decade, the agency has used video hearings to get applicants their hearing decisions sooner. This advancement builds on that effort, making it easier and more convenient to attend a hearing

remotely, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. To continue to ensure all participants’ safety, we expect online video hearings and telephone hearings will be the only two hearing options for the foreseeable future.”

Social Security has been conducting appeal hearings with Administrative Law Judges (ALJ) via telephone only since March, while offices remain closed to the public to protect the health and safety of the public and employees. The agency’s ALJs have held more than 180,000 telephone hearings since March, allowing the agency to continue to deliver critical customer service.

For the new online video hearings, whether the device is a laptop, smartphone, or tablet on either iPhone or Android, people will experience a clear picture and audio of the ALJ and their representative during their hearing.

Dr. Casey Kosiorek, Hilton School District superintendent, displays the plaque the district received as recognition of being name “Best Public School” in the Rochester Official Community Choice Awards.

The Hilton Central School District has been recognized as the Best Public School in the 2020 Rochester Official Community Choice Awards. Sponsored by the Democrat and Chronicle, the Choice Awards honor organizations and businesses that have been nominated by and voted for by the public.

Online voting took place from September 13 through 27.

Due to high water events in recent years, IJC Commissioners initiated a thorough review of the Board’s regulation plan and decision-making process. The restructuring is being implemented at this time because the Commission wishes to have the new structure in place before the spring.

To broaden input from the public, stakeholders and Indigenous communities, the IJC will be establishing an advisory group to the board. Members of the advisory group will provide information and advice directly to the board to ensure it is aware of potential impacts and fully considers their diverse perspectives. The board will also continue to rely on engineering and technical expertise from both countries.

As a first step, the IJC is appointing a smaller interim advisory group effective at the same time as the restructured Board.

“The restructuring represents a streamlined approach for this board,” said Jane Corwin, chair of the IJC’s US Section.

“Commissioners enlarged the board last year, but after careful consideration determined that a smaller decision-making body with input from a more-inclusive advisory body would be more effective and appropriate.”

IJC restructuring its International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board The International Joint Commission’s (IJC) Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board will decrease to a six-member board with an equal number of members from the United States and Canada effective December 1, 2020. The board sets the outflow from Lake Ontario in accordance with the provisions of an order of approval issued by the IJC in 2016.

The restructured board will continue to include one member each nominated by the Government of Canada, the Government of the United States, the Province of Quebec, the Province of Ontario, and the State of New York and will include one additional member on the US side to ensure equal membership from both countries.

Board members will continue to serve in their personal and professional capacity and consider interests of the entire Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River system. The board’s online membership page will be updated when the change takes effect.

Johnson is known for his mid-century designs that include St. John the Evangelist Church in Greece, Temple Sinai in Brighton, the Liberty Pole in Rochester, and the Mushroom House in Perinton.

The Johnson survey was funded by grants from the Preserve New York program and the Landmark Society of Western New York, as well as a donation from the Johnson family. In 2019, the finished report received a New York State Historic Preservation Award for Excellence in Historic Documentation from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and a Special Citation Preservation Award from the Landmark Society.

Free online platform allows New Yorkers to learn new job skills Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced the launch of a new online training platform that will enable unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers weathering the COVID-19 pandemic to learn new skills, earn certificates, and advance their careers at no cost. The new tool will provide access to nearly 4,000 online programs taught by leading professors and industry professionals on Coursera, focusing on high-growth and in-demand sectors like advanced manufacturing, technology, and health care, among others.

“The war against COVID-19 is one taking place on multiple fronts, and while we are doing everything we can to protect the health of New Yorkers, we must also take the steps necessary for building back a strong economy,” Governor Cuomo said. “This new training platform will be key in this effort by ensuring unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers are not left behind by providing access to the resources and training they need to get back on their feet.

Whether it’s taking a refresher course or learning a new skill, I encourage all New Yorkers in need to consider taking advantage of this free program.”

The new course offerings are provided through a partnership between the New York State Department of Labor and Coursera, the world’s leading online learning platform. The partnership will save New York millions of dollars over the

next couple of years while providing free job skills training to New Yorkers. New Yorkers can request a free account on the New York State Department of Labor website, https:// labor.ny.gov/careerservices/coursera/coursera.shtm.

The nearly 4,000 courses available through Coursera are taught by leading professors and industry educators and cover topics ranging from mechanical engineering and project management to technology and data science skills.

The Department of Labor is working with stakeholders across the state to curate the content catalog to respond to industry and regional needs, so job seekers can easily find courses that will make them the most competitive for open positions in New York State.

Coursera Workforce Recovery Initiative is modeled after a highly successful initiative that the company launched in March 2020, which offered free courses to over 3,700 colleges and universities that closed their campuses in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In just six weeks, that initiative launched 6,400 programs for 2,800 colleges and universities around the world, helping enroll 475,000 displaced students in 1.1 million courses.
