Could You Afford To Live To 100?

Over the past three decades, the centenarian population in the United States has grown about 66%, according to the Census Bureau. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a pretty good chance of living to 100 — but it won’t hurt for you to plan for a long retirement. And that means investing for both income and growth.

Straub Memorial Award - The award was established in 1976 in honor of Professor Arthur L. Straub, a member of the Clarkson faculty from 1956 to 1976. The recipient is a senior civil and environmental engineering student who possesses the qualities of professional maturity, scholastic ability and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Recently I have had to ask people to repeat themselves, especially if there’s a lot of noise. How do I really know if I need hearing aids?

Last year I had the last of my teeth pulled and dentures made and I am very unhappy with them. The top denture isn’t bad, but the bottom one won’t stay in place at all, even with adhesive. What can I do? (P.S. I went to one of those places that advertised “guaranteed” dentures, but now they say there’s nothing more they can do!)

Claire Barnwell, a senior environmental studies/ sociology/anthropology/Spanish major from Rochester, received the The Muhlenberg Goodwill Prize and The Allen Mc-Kenney III Memorial Fund Prize at Albright College’s 2016 Honors and Awards Ceremony on May 1.

The ceremony recognized approximately 100 students for academic achievement across the disciplines and for service to the betterment of Albright and the greater community.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had such a bad experience, but unfortunately your concerns are not too uncommon. While many people can function quite well with properly fitted dentures, some people have a much more difficult time no matter how well they fit. This is most often the case with lower dentures, especially if there was bone loss from previous gum disease, extensive shrinkage after extractions, or a generally unfavorable shape to the bone. The best solution to your problem can only be determined after a thorough examination and discussion of your particular needs, but most commonly I will recommend Mini Implants which can solidly stabilize a loose denture with much less expense and less procedure than traditional implant alternatives. (As far as those places that supposedly “guarantee” their dentures, we’ve heard the same complaint from several other patients and are happy to offer a free initial consultation to anyone suffering with a similar problem. Just call my office and mention this article.)

The SUNY Oneonta athletics department held its 27th annual awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 3 and honored 14 student athletes as major award recipients.

Emily Caboot of Rochester was one of the major award winners for the 2015-16 year.

Caboot was the recipient of the G. Hal Chase Memorial Award. Caboot, a member of the swimming and diving program for four years, served as a Swim with the Fish swim lessons instructor during that time. She was a member of SAAC while participating in the Dr. Joe Heissan Leadership Academy and was a two-year Captain and participated in Into the Streets and CANstruction.

The G. Hal Chase Award is given annually to a male and female student athlete who has shown exemplary loyalty, leadership and dedication and someone who has made significant contributions to the overall success of the total Athletic Program at SUNY Oneonta.

The Moving Wall Returns To Spencerport

The Moving Wall, a smaller version of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., returns to Spencerport June 16-20 at The Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post 330, 691 Trimmer Road.

The Moving Wall first visited Spencerport in July of 2000. In the photo at right is The Vietnam Veteran’s Color Guard, taken during the visit in 2000.

Thousands attended the visit in 2000 and The American Legion Post looks to hosting thousands once again.

Donations are being accepted by The American Legion Post to help with the $15,000 cost to host The Moving Wall. The photo is a file photo taken by Walt Horylev.
