US Co-Chair Jane Corwin and Canadian Co-Chair Pierre Béland of the International Joint Commission will host a webinar on high water levels in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River on April 3. The English language webinar will take place at noon.

WBC Champion Tyson Fury captures February 2020 Hickok Belt® Award Newly crowned World Boxing Council Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury, nicknamed the “Gypsy King,” has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for February 2020. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA).

On February 22, British professional boxer Tyson Fury scored a seventh-round TKO over Deontay Wilder, knocking him to the ring floor twice, en route to being crowned the WBC Champion. This bout was a rematch after their initial fight in 2018 ended in a controversial 12 round draw and resulted in Wilder retaining

his title. In the February 2020 bout, Fury dominated from the start. Wilder was knocked to the floor in the third and fifth rounds, and in the seventh round, his corner threw in the towel after Fury delivered a plethora of punishing power punches. Fury became the first man to defeat two champions with ten or more defenses, Wladimir Klitschko (18) and Deontay Wilder (10). Fury now reigns supreme in the heavyweight division and is considered the best heavyweight of the current era at the moment. The third bout rematch is expected to take place on July 18 at the MGM Grand and Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Join a Facebook Live “Woods Talk” on April 3 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. about vernal pools with Laura Bailey, Northwest Regional Director of the Master Forest Owner Program, brought to you in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (CCE-Monroe). This virtual talk will be coming to you live from the edge of a vernal pool in the woods. Join in and learn about the unique geology and hydrology of these seasonal wetlands, the animals that depend on their occurrence, and the plant communities associated with them.

During this talk you will be able to listen to the calls of different frog species that

depend on and visit these pools, identify the tree species surrounding the pool, get an in depth look into one of the few thermogenic plants in the world – the skunk cabbage, and more.

The talk will allow participants to ask questions in real time. Locations in Monroe County, where you can take a walk on your own to look for vernal pools, will be shared.

Establishing an emergency plan As COVID-19 continues to spread across our state, having an emergency plan is more important than ever. Whether you have a boarding facility (small or large) or care for your own horses, we urge you to have a plan in place in the event you (and/or your staff) become ill.

Things to keep in mind when creating a plan are: Who will care for the horses if I fall ill and am unable to care for them?

If an individual or two do not come to mind, there are many emergency caretaker groups being formed. Connecting with a group like this or reaching out to your local equine community could help you create a safety net to ensure your horses are cared for in the event you become ill.

What feed and supplements are my horses getting?

If someone does need to step in and care for your horse, it’s important to have the horse’s feed schedule laid out for that individual. This should be in a spot easily accessible to others, such as in the

feed room, office, tack room, or cabinet in the barn.

Do I have enough feed, supplements, and hay to last me 30 days?

We are still uncertain how COVID-19 will affect horse owners and boarding facilities from getting the feed and supply they need. For that reason, it’s important not to panic, but to have supplies on hand that can help you weather a shortage and limit your exposure to public spaces (as per state and municipal recommendations). If your storage is limited, keep in contact with your suppliers and keep their contact information readily available.

Other considerations for an emergency plan include a compilation of information such as: •Contact information for power of attorney, veterinarian, farrier, other equine health providers, and hay, feed, and supplement suppliers.

•Information on your horses including age, breed, equine health issues, and location of vet records.

Jake Welch, a 2011 graduate of Spencerport High School, returned to the Atlantic League’s York Revolution after joining the team in September of last season for the playoffs.

The 6’6” 26-year-old right-handed pitcher was acquired from the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League. In two seasons with the Frontier League, Welch was 15-11 with a 3.35 ERA. In 28 starts, the Spencerport native threw 234.1 total innings and struck out 205. In his last season with the Otters, Welch finished with a 2.93 ERA and 127 strikeouts with only 38 walks, ranking him third in strikeouts in the league. He has won three division titles and one championship title in the past five years.

York Revolution skipper, Mark Mason, stated, “He showed a lot of promise last year, that was the most innings he’s pitched in his career in one season. For younger guys, there is an adjustment you have to make with that. I think having

Gardening and crisis mitigation

by Kristina Gabalski Things are developing so swiftly right now regarding the Coronavirus situation that I am not sure what exactly will be happening when this column runs.

What I do know for sure, however, is that spring has arrived and that gardens have always played an important role in helping us to get through difficult and uncertain times.

The ancient monasteries of the Middle Ages grew physic gardens with medicinal herbs. Caring for the sick was a priority for the monks. They helped those who had nowhere else to turn or no knowledge of how to treat disease. In more recent times, Victory Gardens planted during World War II helped to provide nutritious food for families during the years of rationing and the uncertainties of global conflict.

Vegetable gardens continue to provide a level of self-sufficiency for those who grow them. Home-grown fruits and vegetables can be eaten fresh or frozen, dried, and canned for long-term storage and future use. Right now, it’s too early for us to be harvesting much from our gardens, but it’s not too early to get outside and start spring cleaning, preparing beds for new plants and seeds. If you have crops like asparagus and rhubarb, it won’t be long until you begin to see growth, and salad greens can also be grown for harvest very early in the season.

Physical activity and nutritious food are essential right now as people work to boost their immune systems and stay healthy. Getting out in the fresh air to work in the yard and garden is a great

thing to do for good health. In addition to providing open air and some “social distance,” outdoor work and exercise help to keep your blood moving and strengthen muscles.

Finally, here is some great news about gardening. Cornell University researchers have discovered a new species of bacteria which can actually help fight climate change. The new bacterium is named ‘madseniana’ after a microbiology professor who began the research but passed away in 2017 before being able to confirm the discovery. This bacteria is adept at breaking down organic matter.

According to Cornell, that includes carcinogenic chemicals that are released from the burning of fossil fuels. This means the bacteria could help clean contaminated soils and serve as a key player in the soil carbon cycle.

In an article in the Cornell Chronicle, Dan Buckley, professor of microbial ecology says, “We know remarkably little about how soil bacteria operate. Soils, every year, process about seven times more carbon than all of the human emissions from cars, power plants, and heating units all over the world, just in their natural work of decomposing plant material.”

Buckley adds that even small changes in soil management can make a big impact on climate change.

So get outside and get to work in the garden. It will help to keep you healthy in the midst of a health crisis, boost your mood, and will help to keep our environment healthy as we work to understand and cope with changes in our climate.
