Linda Clifford Memorial Jamboree to be held Sunday, May 6 by Tami Raco “To My Princess: by now, if you’re watching, you’re thinking, is he nuts? Well, my darling, you know I am but not dangerous. We were gonna do something for Wilmot Cancer Institute, but all this? Love you now till we meet again. ~Your Cowboy.”

These words from Dick Clifford to his wife Linda (Nasca) Clifford who lost her battle to throat cancer exactly two years ago as he prepares for her memorial jamboree. Dick recalls his first encounter with Linda, an avid horse lover and trainer. He met her in 1968 when she came into his life like a ball of fire, saving him from nearly being trampled by a feisty horse he had just

taken ownership of. She had a special touch with animals, especially horses. Thanks to Dick’s persistence in pursuing Linda, they went on to marry and move to Clarkson, and opened Sundown Ranch. As Dick reflects on his 48-year love affair with Linda, he says, “Everyday of my life with her was exciting. We would hunt, argue and kiss every day … And I never won one fight.” Linda and Dick were active in the community. They both drove buses for Brockport Schools, and Linda was the owner of a local pet store. They did everything together, except Jazzercise. Linda was active in the Brockport Jazzercise program and formed close bonds to the instructors as well as women in the community. Linda first became ill in the fall of 2015 when she was diagnosed with throat cancer. She had her treatment at the Wilmot Cancer Center under the care of Dr. Matthew Miller. The staff at Wilmot treated Linda like a queen and him like a king. “Everyone from the receptionist, coordinator, nurses and doctors, all the way up the chief of staff, were absolutely amazing. They made a horrible time much more bearable,” Dick said. Linda and Dick were inspired to give back to the Wilmot Cancer Center for all the amazing care the center provided. The couple enjoyed going out to enjoy music and have a good time, so after Linda’s death, Dick had the idea of starting a Memorial

Dick and Linda Clifford. Provided photo. Jamboree in Linda’s memory. The first Memorial Jamboree took place last May and was successful in raising money for local cancer research. Dick was very grateful for the community’s support and was especially appreciative for having the opportunity to celebrate Linda’s life with those from the community.

Linda Clifford Memorial Jamboree to be held Sunday, May 6 continued from front page Due to the success in raising money for Wilmot Cancer Center and the opportunity to cherish Linda’s life, Dick is holding the second Memorial Jamboree. It will be on Sunday, May 6, from noon to 6 p.m. at Brockport’s Elks Lodge. “The day will be chock full of entertainment to honor Linda’s life, including one of the best Elvis tributes, Tribute to the King - Terry Buchwald, Boones Farm Band, Happy the Clown and Ruby Shooz, a renowned rock band in this area.” Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the event or in advance by calling Dick at 637-3807. The event is free to all veterans, police and firefighters. In addition to the six hours

of entertainment, there will be a Chinese raffle, 50/50 tickets, food and drinks. Dick pays all expenses for this event out of his pocket. He donates 100 percent of all of the ticket sales to Wilmot Cancer Center to help aide the research money to obtain grants locally. The couple had spent their life being active in their community and had always found pleasure in giving to others. “I do this for my wife. It helps keep me going,” Dick said. Spring Turkey Hunting II by T.R. Hendrick The sound of the gobble was so close that the hair on the back of my neck stood up and pushed my hat over my eyes. I had heard some crunching among the leaves in the woods behind me, but figured it was a squirrel because I hadn’t heard a single gobble in response to my twenty minutes of calling. The gobbler had snuck in silently. This turkey was so close that I could smell his breath, or maybe was it mine bouncing off my facemask back at me. I tried to stay calm but my heart hadn’t got the memo; my pulse was racing my breath to see which could come in the shortest intervals. No matter how many turkeys I’ve harvested over the thirty years I’ve been chasing them, I still get that same adrenalin rush as I did for my first. Without moving my head, I looked as hard left as my eyeballs would bend. I could see this giant bird moving by just a few yards from the big maple tree I was leaning against. Luckily, he was focused on the Dave Smith hen decoy I had placed out at the edge of the field and not at me. That is one major reason to use a decoy. It is not so much that they attract a gobbler as that they take the bird’s attention away from the hunter. As the giant butterball stepped onto the field he popped into full strut, trying to look as cool as possible to impress this new chick. I know I was impressed, he looked as big as a Boeing 747. His beard was so long it was dragging in the damp grass and his fan was perfect. My camoed 12 gauge was in the ready position on my knee but, unfortunately, was not in line with the turkey now thirty yards away. I moved the gun barrel at a snail’s pace to try and line up for a shot but the weapon suddenly stopped dead as it hit a small sapling. This tiny tree couldn’t have been in a worst spot and prevented me from getting my bead on this monster’s melon. There was no way I could get a shot unless I lifted my barrel up and over the sapling. Deep down I knew this was too much movement. A wild turkey has the eyesight of an eagle and the eyes on the side of his head allow him see close to 360 degrees. But he was in full strut now, completely in love with my hen decoy and he was now facing directly away from me. Maybe his fan would block his view of my movement. I held my breath and slowly lifted the camoed gun barrel up and around the sapling. Suddenly I to heard a sharp Putt, Putt, Putt … the alarm call of a turkey. My gobbler had picked up on my movement and was now out of strut and starting to move away. My only hope at this point was to finish my maneuver as quickly as possible and pray my gobbler would hang a few more seconds. As I made the sudden move the bird turned on the afterburners and ran like he had seen the devil himself as he covered 100 yards in the blink of an eye, passing a roadrunner and two cheetahs on his sprint. I hadn’t even gotten my gun half way to my shoulder. Man … if I had a dollar for each time I had tried to outdraw a gobbler and lost I would be down in Mar-A-Largo with Trump on the weekends. What can I say? That rush of excitement causes my brain to overreact.

Plus the fact that I’m an extremely slow learner. Lucky for me I’m persistent. Before I get too longwinded again as I did last week, I’d better get you readers some tips from someone who actually knows what they are talking about. I reached out to Don Sikorski of Batavia. Don is one of the best turkey hunters I’ve ever known, and I’ve known hundreds. Don has a passion for turkey hunting that few can match. He schedules his life around turkey season each May and it would take the Pope coming over for dinner to have him change his plans. Even then, if it was the opener the Pope would have to reschedule. Here is what Don suggested: “The real key to having consistent success as a turkey hunter is finding hot gobblers … a gobbler without hens. It really boils down to the simple fact that a gobbler will come to a half-decent hen yelp if he is alone. If he has hens already, chances are he won’t. This does not mean you can’t call a gobbler in that has hens, and I’ve done so many times, but your odds of doing so are much slimmer. That is why I like to hunt aggressively. I will hunt one location for the first hour or so of the morning, then I will start moving and don’t sit down in the woods again until I actually get an answer (gobble). You could say that I troll for a gobbler. “My hunting partner Bob McGraw and I have been hunting the same area in the southern tier of New York for close to forty years now. Over that time, we have obtained hunting permission on a good deal of ground in our area so we will have plenty of room to cover ground and call. We have learned over the years that our odds of scoring go way up if you find a lonely gobbler and the best way to do that is to cover ground and calling every so often. “Bob and I have a milk route, so to speak. We drive from spot to spot. In some cases, we call right from the road and in others we will walk way back into a woodblock and call. If we don’t get an answer, we turn around and walk all the way back out again never setting foot in the woods. We don’t hunt this way because we are lazy, we do it because calling from a distance means we aren’t boogering up our spots with excessive human activity. We believe that the less the turkeys in our area lay eyes on hunters in their woods the better. Many times, we will return to a spot a second or even a third time hoping the gobblers we know are in the area have lost their hens. We have scored several times over the years on our third time calling to location on a given day. If we had gone into the woods the first time and started tromping around and calling, we would have educated all the turkeys in that spot and ruined that location possibly for the season. By calling from a distance you can hunt that spot several times a day all season long. I want to thank Don for his tips here and for all the tips he has given me over the years. Without his help in my early days of turkey hunting I would surely have gotten discouraged and given up. Thanks Don! New York’s turkey harvest numbers have been going down now since 1999. Last year, for example, spring turkey hunters harvested 17,492 birds. That was one thousand birds lower than 2016, and the lowest since the early 90’s

Drew Brown from LeRoy with a nice longbeard he harvested in New York last season. Provided photo. There are many reasons for this – a wet nesting season in May and early June being number one, but predators are a close second. Western New York has more predators than most people know, starting with: coyote, red fox, grey fox, great horned owl, red-tail hawk, crow, raccoon, opossum, skunk, mink and weasel, feral cats and, of course, man. Many of these are nest predators which are actually worse than say a coyote or a hawk, because a nest predator such as a raccoon, opossum or skunk cannot catch a full-grown turkey; but they sure love their eggs. Come nightfall in the spring that is when they start grocery shopping by searching for ground-nesting turkey, pheasants or songbird eggs, destroying the whole clutch. It’s a wonder any turkeys survive with so many predators after them. All our wild pheasants are gone for that same reason. Spring is the greatest time to be in the outdoors, you turkey hunters know this, so set you alarm to that insanely early hour and get out there. Remember to be safe and know your target. There is never a valid excuse to shoot at a sound.

Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension mid-way through Master Food Preserver Workshop Series As more and more people look to find ways to increase their self-sufficiency, interest in home food preservation is on the rise. At Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Master Food Preserver program is here to support and educate the public on the safety and methodology of preserving foods at home. This group of dedicated volunteers has offered workshops to the public over the last three years, and they are currently mid-way through the 2018 Workshop Series. The remaining classes are: kimchi on May 5, freezing basics on June 23, salsa on August 18, pie filling on September 15, and pressure canning on October 27. Course fees vary depending on materials but range from $5 to $25 per class. Class size is limited, so all classes require pre-registration with payment to secure a spot. The next class in the series will be a hands-on workshop teaching students how to make kimchi. “Kimchi is kind of like Korean sauerkraut,” explained Katie Oakes, OCCCE horticulture educator and coordinator of the Master Food Preserver Program. “It is a mix of

vegetables and spices that naturally ferments over time. The result is a flavorful condiment, packed with vitamins and probiotics.” The kimchi class is $25 and all participants will go home with a mason jar home fermentation kit. The pressure canning workshop is also always popular, giving homeowners hands-on training and confidence in using this unnecessarily daunting kitchen tool. The pressure canning workshop focuses on food products that are low-acid and thus require higher temperatures and longer processing times, like meats and certain vegetables. The workshops are held on Saturdays once a month until November with a break in July for the Orleans County 4-H Fair. The November date will feature an end-of-season party with lunch made from products created at each workshop. All classes are held in the Trolley Kitchen located on the Orleans County 4-H Fairgrounds, 12690 State Route 31, Albion, NY 14411. Call 798-4265 for more details and to register.

sports & recreation Hawks win on combined two-hitter by Warren Kozireski Matt Skelan and Sam Lammes combined to allow visiting Kendall just two hits as Holley rebounded from a walk-off loss one day earlier to defeat the Eagles 7-0 in boy’s baseball. Lammes tossed five-plus innings and earned his first victory of the season in relief of starter Matt Skelan, who left due to pitch count rules. The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Lammes singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Nathan Towne. It remained a pitcher’s duel with Kendall right-hander Mason Kuhn fanning eight batters before the Hawks batted around and scored six times in the sixth inning.

Senior Ryan Andrews drew a lead-off walk, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI double to left-center by Patrick Bower. Brandon Dillenbeck drove in Bower with a single to make it 3-0 Hawks. Michael Passarell reached on an infield single before Nick Schutz was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Glenn Thrower plated two more runs with a single to left and Skelan two more with another single to extend the lead to 7-0. Holley pitching allowed just the two hits and struck out a combined 12 batters. “It was nice to see the team pull together (after the walk-off loss the day prior),” first year varsity head coach Dan Burke said. “It was a 1-0 game here until late, so good to see they didn’t lose their confidence.”

Blue Devils Netters win twice Eagles earn first win by Warren Kozireski Brockport swept all three doubles matches in wins over both Eastridge and Batavia last week in rebounding from a 1-2 start to their season. The top doubles team of Calvin Moulton and Nate Riexinger defeated their Lancer opponent 6-1, 6-3 before a 6-1, 6-4 win over Batavia. Cristo Abraham and Charlie McKee beat Eastridge 6-1, 6-4 at second doubles while the unit of Jacob Specht and Gavin Tremblay did the same versus Batavia 6-4, 7-5 in second doubles matches. Jack Anderson and Connor Roberts had little difficulty in their 6-0, 6-0 third doubles sweep in the Lancer match while Alex Biler and Jacob Coogan were eventually victorious in the same slot against Batavia 7-5, 5-7, 10-7. First singles Matt Benedict took both of his matches as well 6-0, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-4 respectively.

Michael Rennie slotted in second singles against Eastridge and won 6-0, 6-4 with fourth singles Hunter Ross winning via forfeit. Chris Benedict won at third singles for the Blue Devils against Batavia 6-1, 6-1. Kendall lost just three sets during the entire match as they earned their first tennis win of the spring 5-0 over Alexander. Nathan Warters won 6-4, 6-1 at first singles while Ryan Barrett also had little trouble at second singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Matthew Murray squeezed out a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 win at third singles. The Eagles’ top doubles unit of Stephen Balka and Christopher Butlin stumbled in the second set, but emerged victorious 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. And Kari Harrier with Tory Raufeison won their second doubles match 6-3, 5-7,

Churchville-Chili senior swims to Canisius College The future looks bright for Tyler Regelsberger, a Churchville-Chili High School senior who plans to take his career in swimming to a new level while working towards a college degree. Regelsberger signed his letter of intent to compete for Division 1 Canisius College at a ceremony on April 16. “Tyler holds six school records, four individual and two as a member of relay teams,” said Churchville-Chili Athletic Director Michael Murray. “He qualified for an amazing six individual events at states and was a finalist in 100 and 200 freestyles. He was the Section V Class A champion in the 200 individual medley, and was awarded Monroe County Division 2 Swimmer of the Year. Tyler has been a huge part of our team during his varsity career, and very fun to watch.” Regelsberger is excited to be joining the Griffs in Buffalo. He already knows a few of his future team members and has been impressed with the school’s swimming program. “Canisius also has a great campus,” he said, “and has very good academic programs in my career areas of business, accounting and computer science.” Regelsberger will use the skills he gained in high school to prepare for college. “I’ve really loved swimming for Churchville-Chili. It really helped me to train with teammates who were faster and more experienced. My coaches motivated me to work harder and be better.”

Rychwalski, a heart survivor, created and was the captain of The Lionhearted team, which raised over $1,500 for the American Heart Association. Approximately 4,500 people took part in the 2018 Rochester Heart Walk & Run, raising awareness and money for the association. Provided photo.

Regelsberger was recently named to the Democrat and Chronicle’s 2017-18 All Greater Rochester Boys Swimming Team. This is his second time as an AGR selection. He has also been a First Team Monroe County All-County selection for three consecutive years. Outside of swimming, Regelsberger is a National Honor Society member and an Eagle Scout. “We’ve had a record number of Churchville-Chili students receive athletic scholarships this year,” said Murray. “So far, we’ve celebrated and completed 10 official signings, and there are a few more students who will be heading to outstanding college sports programs in the fall. We’re very proud.” Provided information

Joe’s stories - old, new, mostly true

Homesteads for Hope project by Joe Reinschmidt It was a nice spring day in 2017 when Lukas was asked if he would like to go with his grandparents, usually known as Opa and Oma, to the Homesteads For Hope barn/garage sale. He readily agreed. Upon arrival he spent some time looking at the items offered for sale. However a posting of renderings on the wall really got his attention and he asked what they were for. Opa explained that the first one depicted what the place looked like now, but the others represented the changes they hoped to make as the project evolved into what the founders envisioned it to become in their effort to help older autistic young people and adults. Lukas quickly realized that both physical and financial help were needed to achieve the developement of the property reflected in the renderings. Being only 12 at the time, he knew that helping with construction was not an option. But still he had a strong desire to help. Oma said they would talk it over after they returned home. That is what they did and after several ideas were expressed it was decided that collecting and returning deposit bottles and cans for the refund was certainly an option. Lukas asked to be excused, went to the computer and in a few minutes came back with a flyer that could be posted and/or given to friends and family offering to accept the deposit containers and even pick them up if someone was unable to deliver them. Of course the venue for the drop off was Opa and Oma’s home at 336

Picture shows Lukas giving a check for $500 to Olena Lylak, Vice President and Educational Director for Homesteads for Hope. Ogden Parma Town Line Road. Also as Lukas was too young to drive, Opa and his truck would be the transport vehicle. The summer and fall produced several truck loads of the containers and Lukas helped with the loading, unloading and accepting the cash they produced. He carefully counted it and hid it away. More bottles and cans arrived after the fall and winter holidays. By this spring the total reached $500 and we thought it could best be used now as projects at Homesteads get under way this year. Many thanks to those who donated bottles and cans. With your help the collection and return project will continue thru 2018.

GPAS presents two concerts on May 20 at two different locations Music aficionados will have a tough decision to make on Sunday, May 20, when the Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) presents two different concerts at two different venues: a joint concert with the Greece Concert Band and Greece Community Orchestra at Bethany Presbyterian Church and a concert by the Greece Choral Society at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Both concert locations are on Dewey Avenue in the Town of Greece. The “Stage & Screen Concert” will showcase the Greece Concert Band directed by BJ Comer and the Greece Community Orchestra directed by Jonathan Allentoff. The program features musical highlights from award-winning Disney and Hollywood films, Broadway musicals and classic operas, including such favorites as “Aida,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” “La La Land,” “Les Miserables,” “Peter Gunn,” “The Pink Panther” and more familiar songs. “Music from Broadway and other Popular Songs” is the theme for the Greece Choral

Society’s Spring Concert under the musical direction of Dr. Rollo Fisher and accompanied by pianist Kevin Wang. Karen Pearson, the president and coordinator of the 65-member choral group, described the program with familiar musical phrases: “Give my regards to Broadway. Take a trip through the Phantom’s tunnels, attend his Masquerade, and let the spectacle astound you. Climb every mountain or follow the escapades of Esmeralda and Quasimodo. Hum along to Beatles’ tunes.” Joining the Greece Choral Society for this concert will be the ROC City Ringers, a bell choir directed by Jackie Anderson and Chris Lenti. The Greece Choral Society’s Spring Concert “Music from Broadway and other Popular Songs” will be Sunday, May 20, at 3:30 p.m., St. Charles Borromeo Church, 3003 Dewey Avenue (14616). Doors open at 2:30 p.m. with a suggested $5 donation. Provided information

Over 100 people attended the retirement party for Chris Daily on March 29, with approximately 30 of them being local teenagers that attend or have attended Daily’s programs. Daily has worked for 29 years at the Seymour Library, and in her most recent years, she has been the Young Adult Services Coordinator. She developed Teen programs and oversaw 91 teen volunteers last year. Her teens participated in community service (at the library and in the community), “Book Buddies,” book clubs, writing clubs, teen improv, and multi-media workshop. Daily was presented with proclamations from the Towns of Clarkson and Sweden, the Village of Brockport and Mike Rockow and Mike Zale of the Monroe County Legislature, as well as a plaque from the Library Board of Trustees commemorating her years of service to teen patrons. Daily’s successor is Stephanie Blando. The community wishes both Stephanie and Chris the best of luck. Provided information.

Never too old for Jell-O Seniors from Westwood Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in North Chili, took a trip into the past during a recent visit to the Jell-O Gallery Museum in LeRoy. “America’s Favorite Dessert” was born in LeRoy in 1897, but it took many more years and a few changes in ownership before Jell-O really became a household name. Sam Nico purchased the company from Frank Woodward in 1899 for $35. Thanks to a successful marketing campaign, sales amounted to $250,000 within the first year of Nico purchasing it. Succeeding years saw Jell-O change from a hand-packaged business to a highly mechanized factory, and become one of LeRoy’s most important industries. In 1925, it was sold to the Postum Cereal Company, Inc. which would eventually become General Foods Corporation. Residents asked a lot of questions and took a lot of photos on the museum tour. They reminisced about memories from their childhood, including the theme song and some of the interesting recipes their mothers made using Jell-O. Each one was given a box of Jell-O as a souvenir. Finding Compassionate Brockport Compassionate Brockport began as an interfaith ministry in response to growing concerns over hate crimes and racism. Its purpose is to create a more welcoming environment for everyone living in and visiting the Brockport area. Two places where people will receive compassion, kindness and caring is the Brockport Food Shelf and the Brockport Clothing Center. The Food Shelf began in 1973 with its primary mission to reduce hunger by providing food relief. The food shelf is open the first four Thursdays of the month at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 to 6 p.m.

Also at St. Luke’s is the Brockport Clothing Center. It gathers and distributes free clothing for the greater Brockport area communities and is located in the basement of St. Luke’s Church. The Clothing Center is open every Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and every Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. These ministries are both supported by Brockport’s local churches, civic organizations, local businesses, schools, The College at Brockport, and individuals who donate their time, talent and treasure. The compassion and commitment of the volunteers keep these two very important ministries staffed and organized. Provided information

Integrating technology into instruction at C-C schools Churchville-Chili Central School District is in the sixth year of a technology plan to roll out 1:1 computer access to all students in grades K-12. Recently, the District’s 21st Century Technology Planning and Advisory Committee, a group of district administrators, teachers and librarians, reviewed the progress being made to ensure that instructional programs at all grade levels meet the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards for learning in the digital age. “After reviewing examples of student work from over 300 Churchville-Chili teachers from all subjects and grade levels, we are proud to say that the district has kept pace with the changing ISTE standards and is meeting or exceeding them,” said Instructional Technology Specialist Megan Hugg. “Our teachers are thoughtfully incorporating a wide range of technology into the curricula that engage students and empower them to take charge of their own learning.” For example, fourth-grade students are studying local history and sharing their digital presentations via distance learning technology with fourth-graders in other parts of New York State. At the Ninth Grade Academy, students create mock Instagram posts with visuals and hashtags that demonstrate their understanding of plot, theme and literary techniques used in Hemingway’s classic, “The Old Man and the Sea.” “It’s really exciting to see how much our students can accomplish using the technology we’ve provided them with,” Hugg said. ISTE standards have evolved since their introduction in 1998. Initially, they focused on ensuring that all students had access to digital tools and knew how to use them. Now, the goal is more ambitious: to leverage 1:1 access to internet-connected devices to transform student learning. There

A second-grader at Fairbanks Road School shares his research and online presentation on artic mammals with a visiting high school student. Provided photo. are seven current ISTE standards for students: empowered learner, digital citizen, knowledge constructor, innovative designer, computational thinker, creative communicator and global collaborator. Each standard represents skills and qualities that will enable students to thrive in a connected, digital world. Thanks to a detailed analysis of these hundreds of projects, the committee identified two focus areas for improvement. Topping the list is empowered learner. “This ties in exceptionally well with our district’s commitment to Learner-Centered Principles,” Hugg said. “Ensuring that our students can leverage technology to take a more active role in achieving their own learning goals is central to district guiding principles and core beliefs.” The forward-looking plan also calls for emphasis on skills represented by the digital citizen standard. “Students need more help becoming responsible, kind, positive and alert while online,” Hugg said. “We want them to stay safe and be aware of privacy, respect the intellectual property of others, and also understand the moral and legal issues that come along with the misuse of technology. Above all, we want them to be able to create a positive reputation for themselves online and to display ethics and good character.” “Teachers are already doing a great job of using technology to enhance the learning experience at ChurchvilleChili schools,” Hugg said. “The challenge is to expand our incorporation of digital tools, actually embedding them into the learning experience. We are seeing more and more classrooms adding higher levels of collaboration with classmates, connecting to global experts, engaging in data collection and analysis, and showcasing learning in creative ways.”

Brockport Music Ensembles gear up for “Spring Music Week 2018” As the semester draws to a close, there are still plenty of concerts to be had at The College at Brockport. The musical ensembles that are part of the Department of Theatre and Music Studies will be performing in their year-end recitals during “Spring Music Week 2018.” Each of the concerts starts at 7:30 p.m., and will be held in one of the venues in the Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley Street, on the Brockport campus. Admission for each of the concerts is $5, payable at the door. Contact the department at (585) 395-2496 for more information. •Wednesday, May 2 - The Brockport Xylophone Ensemble and the Brockport Brass Ensemble will perform in the Tower Mainstage. The xylophones will be doing a tribute to Michael Johnson, a Brockport student who has been in the group every semester and is graduating this May. The brass will perform a tribute to composer Stephen Foster. Natalie Sarrazin leads the xylophones, while Natalie Fuller directs the brass. •Thursday, May 3 - Scott Horsington will lead the Brockport College-Community Orchestra in a concert in the Tower Mainstage featuring works by some of the greatest Classical composers. Gioachino Rossini will be represented by the “Overture” to L’Italiana in Algeri; Antonio Vivaldi’s “Concerto in A major for Guitar” will feature community member Al Mathias on guitar; and Richard Strauss’ “Concerto No. 1 for Horn” will similarly feature a guest soloist, Brockport graduate student Brittany White, on horn. The concert will conclude with the “Sinfonia” from Nebuchadnezzar by Giuseppe Verdi. On that same evening, the Brockport Concert Band will make its debut, also under Horsington’s direction, opening for the orchestra. They will be performing four selections, including “Danny Boy” and “Variations on a Korean Folk Song,” by John Barnes Chance. Horsington adds that for one of the other selections, the audience “might feel that they are under the big top once again.” •Friday, May 4 - Karl Stabnau will lead the Brockport Jazz Ensemble in a concert in the Tower Black Box Theatre. •Saturday, May 5 - Music Week winds down with the Brockport College-Community Chorus in their spring concert, “Love in Bloom” in the Tower Mainstage. Tickets ($17/General, $12/Seniors, $9/Students) are available at http://fineartstix.brockport.edu, or by calling 395-2787.

When programming the concert, music director Elizabeth Banner managed to capture aspects of love from the ridiculous to the sublime. On the ridiculous end of the spectrum would be Johannes Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes. It’s not that the waltzes are ridiculous; it’s that Brahms’ love life was a little bizarre. At the other end of the spectrum is Eric Whitacre’s setting of “Five Hebrew Love Songs.” Whitacre asked his then-girlfriend Hila Plitman, a soprano who was born and raised in Israel, to write him a few “postcards” in her native Hebrew. He writes that “a few days later she presented me with these exquisite and delicate Hebrew poems … Each of the songs captures a moment that Hila and I shared together. ‘Kala Kalla’ (which means ‘light bride’) was a pun I came up with while she was first teaching me Hebrew.” The concert will also feature works by DiLasso, Lauridson, Mulholland, Meader and Stoope. More information about the Fine Arts Series at The College at Brockport can be found at www.brockport.edu/ academics/fine_arts or on Facebook.

Spencerport CSD hosts singer Emir Sensini Spencerport Central School District will host Argentine singer, Emir Sensini, in concert at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 4 in the Spencerport High School Performing Arts Center. Sensini tours schools across the United States to encourage youth to learn Spanish and accept other cultures. He brings an inspirational message to students to pursue their dreams and believe anything is possible. Students from Cosgrove Middle School and Spencerport High School will be joined by eight other school districts from around Western New York for this engaging concert.
