Crimson Cadets Marching Band, a Hilton tradition for 60 years by Tami Raco The Hilton Central School District began its marching band program in 1963. For six decades, the district has had a thriving marching band made up of dedicated students and staff from the community. High school marching bands began to take off after World War I, when the public school systems expanded, hiring teachers who were military veterans with band experience. They began to influence school culture by creating marching band programs. The first marching band competition was held in Chicago, Illinois, in 1923. High school marching bands are typically a group of instrumentalists – woodwinds and percussion instruments. They combine movement with musical performance and marching in coordinated uniforms and perform in parades, football games, pep rallies, festivals, and competitions. High school marching bands began to compete in state competitions in 1959, and by the early 70s, 40 states were participating. Since then, high school marching bands have become an integral part of high school culture and the community. The Hilton Crimson Cadets Marching band supports sports programs at halftime shows and pep rallies and represents the school at local festivals. They also compete in regional, national, and international competitions. Shelly Bruni is the Assistant Director of the Crimson Cadets and teaches the Color Guard. She is a Hilton marching band alumna and began helping the marching band shortly after she graduated

She told them to be proud of themselves and what they have accomplished. in 1992. “There have been many extremely talented band directors and staff over the years that paved the way for so many phenomenal students in the community to enjoy, enhance and perfect their skills and musicianship. Marching band is a true sport,” said Shelly. The marching band is like a second family to the kids and staff involved. “Kids have it rough out there, and by being in this program, they get a great support system. They make friends and create bonds. These kids are amazing,” exclaimed Shelly. No musical instrument experience is required to be part of the marching band program. Practices are held twice per week, and there are game nights a few times a month and fun bonding activities. The marching band performs at events and competitions near and far. “We went to Japan and performed, and we are going to Washington, D.C., in 2024 to compete and do some fun sightseeing,” added Shelly. The cost to be in the band is nominal, and the school will help those in need. Beginning in sixth grade, students can join the marching band, and fifth graders are encouraged to come check it out. The band has marching, instruments, drums, the pit, a color guard using flags, and dance weapons like sabers and rifles.

Not only do the students learn marching band skills, but they also learn valuable life lessons. “We teach and reinforce to the students to have respect for their peers and adults, to show kindness and support to others, and the importance of good work ethic. These are attributes they will bring into adulthood. It never leaves your life,” said Shelly. Shelly Bruni and the leadership of the Hilton Crimson Cadets marching band want the community to remember they exist. “The kids deserve to have the community behind them and
realize they are just as important as our sports teams,” Shelly said. The fall season is winding down now, and the spring season will begin in April. Practice is both indoors and outdoors. Any Hilton students with interest are invited to stop by during practice, held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hilton High School. Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse region wins federal Tech Hub designation U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer was in Rochester on October 23 to celebrate the Biden administration’s designation of the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse region as a federal Tech Hub. The Tech Hubs program is an economic development initiative designed to drive regional innovation and job creation by strengthening a region’s capacity to manufacture, commercialize, and deploy technology that will advance American competitiveness. The program invests directly in burgeoning, high-potential U.S. regions and aims to transform them into globally competitive innovation centers. The Tech Hubs program was created in the bipartisan CHIPS & Science Act, which was signed into law in August 2022. The three-region consortium beat out hundreds of applications and was one of only 31 regions chosen for the Tech Hub designation. The NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub proposal will now be able to compete for the next phase of the Tech Hubs Program that will invest between $50 and $75 million in each of five to 10 Designated Hubs. An initial infusion of $500 million was included in last year’s spending bill to jumpstart the Tech Hubs competition, from which Phase 2 awards will be made. The CHIPS & Science Act included a $10 billion authorization for the Tech Hubs program – meaning that designated Tech Hubs will be able to compete for significantly more investment based off future funding levels. Schumer said that with this designation, the NY SMART I-Corridor will bring together the combined assets of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse to help the region become a globally-recognized semiconductor manufacturing hub in the next decade, with innovation focused on improving the quality and quantity of semiconductor manufacturing and, along with it, amplifying the region’s microelectronics and microchip supply chain ecosystem. “Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse are officially on the road to becoming America’s semiconductor superhighway,” said Senator Schumer. “I created this program with Upstate NY in mind, and now three of our own cities that helped build America, have not only won the exclusive federal Tech Hub designation for semiconductors, but also won a once in a generation opportunity to write a new chapter for Upstate NY building our nation’s future. This three region Tech Hub will hit the gas on NY’s booming chips industry by attracting new companies, training our workforce for tens of thousands of good-paying jobs, and bringing manufacturing in this critical industry back from overseas to right here in Upstate NY,” Specifically, the NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub proposal seeks to propel the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse corridor by attracting new suppliers to the region, including onshoring companies from overseas, advancing
research and development programs for the semiconductor industry, training the next generation of Upstate New York’s manufacturing workforce, and specifically helping ensure that underserved populations are connected to the tens thousands of good-paying jobs expected to be created in this growing industry in the region. Congressman Joe Morelle said, “This historic federal commitment will power our local innovation economy, create jobs, and fortify our position as a leader in the global tech landscape. I am incredibly grateful for the bipartisan support of my colleagues from the New York delegation – together we are leveraging the unique economic strengths of our regions to pioneer the industries of tomorrow and secure our nation’s technological future.” The Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse consortium includes over 80 members from across the public sector, industry, higher-education, economic and workforce development, and labor. This includes over 22 industry groups and firms, 20 economic development organizations, eight labor and workforce training organizations, and 10 institutions of higher learning. This application development process was led by three designated conveners, one from each region: The John R. Oishei Foundation in Buffalo, ROC2025 in Rochester, and CenterState CEO in Syracuse. Members of the consortium include semiconductor manufacturers and supply chain business like Micron, INFICON, Corning, Optimax, AMD, TTM Technologies, Saab, Akoustis, L3Harris, Lockheed Martin, Edwards Vacuum, Linde, Lifatec and SRC; business organizations like NY Photonics with 120-member companies, Buffalo Niagara Partnership, and Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA) with 85-member companies, Buffalo Niagara Manufacturing Alliance (BNMA), and the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce; education and research institutions like University of Buffalo, University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, Monroe Community College, Syracuse University, Cornell, SUNY Oswego, SUNY ESF, SUNY EOC, and Onondaga Community College; workforce development partners like Centerstate CEO, Northland Workforce Training Center, RochesterWorks, RMAPI, UNiCON, WNY Area Labor Federation, Central-Northern New York Building and Construction Trades Council, IBEW Local 43, and many more. “This initiative has the potential to drive significant economic growth, technological advancement and job creation – not just for this region, but for the entire nation,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. “The NY SMART I-Corridor would harness the unique strengths of each city in the consortium and propel this region into a global powerhouse for semiconductor technology.” Learn more about the Tech Hubs program at TechHubs.gov Provided information

The Town of Sweden has been notified that the New York State Department of Transportation will be closing the bridge carrying Gallup Road over the Erie Canal in the towns of Ogden and Sweden, Monroe County, for maintenance activities. The bridge is scheduled to be closed by the first week of November and is anticipated to reopen in spring 2024. The DOT will post a detour route for motorists to follow. Free playgroup for preschoolers at BOCES 2 BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education students in Child and Family Development offer a free playgroup for children ages 18 months to five years old. Brockport Symphony Orchestra presents “Matinee at the Movies” The Brockport Symphony Orchestra will present “Matinee at the Movies” on Sunday, November 5, 4 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport, 35 State Street, Brockport. Directed by Jonathan Allentoff, this concert celebrating 100 years of Hollywood studios will feature vocal artists Shaya Greathouse and Michael DeLuca, composer-in-residence Emmanuel Sikora, and film professor Dr. Sidney Rosenzweig. Greathouse, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and Biola University, is described as having “a most attractive
and well produced lyric mezzo voice” by Michael Spierman, Artistic Director of the Bronx Opera. She has appeared as Hansel (Hansel and Gretel) and Tisbe (La Cenerentola), and she played Carmen in a special PBS production in Buffalo. She is a recitalist and sacred service musician. DeLuca studied vocal performance with Heinz Rehfuss while attending The University at Buffalo and has performed on stage across Western New York. He records and produces a variety of albums for the major streaming platforms and

recently collaborated with Allentoff on the 2023 album, Let’s Go to the Movies. Sikora, a graduate of Binghamton University and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, is a PeruvianAmerican composer and pianist with recent performances by the Ukrainian Festival Orchestra, Lviv Philharmonic, and the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra. The Washington Post has described his music as “an appealing melding of the romantic and the contemporary, unselfconscious and unpretentious.” Rosenzweig is a lecturer of film at SUNY Brockport and author of the book, Casablanca and Other Major Films of Michael Curtiz. The orchestra will perform the world premiere of “100 Years of Romance” by Sikora and “Dreams of Hollywood Hills” by Allentoff. The program also includes a variety of Hollywood favorites for the entire family. Admission is free, and donations will be accepted. This project is made possible with support from the Village of Brockport and funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by Genesee Valley Council on the Arts. •Lawrenson, Roy David, died October 24, 2023 at age 83. Roy was born December 14, 1939 to the late Herbert and Anna (Rose) Lawrenson. He was married to his late wife, Joanne Lawrenson in 1989, who lost her battle to cancer in 2000. Roy is survived by his children, Janet (Wayne) Zygloke, Juliann (Todd) Woodard, and Stanley (Kim) Lawrenson; his step-son, Charles (Tammy) Beaney; his grandchildren, Ryan Zygloke, Melissa (Ethan) Walsh, Kitana (Nathan) Burgess, Bowen (Elizabeth) Woodard, Elisabeth Lawrenson, Zechariah (Julie) Lawrenson, Bethany (Daniel) Mowery, Josiah (Malaya) Lawrenson, Chloe Lawrenson, Steven Lawrenson, and Luke Lawrenson; his step-grandchildren, Gary Jr. (Karen) Tobin and Chaz Beaney, his five great-grandchildren; his first wife, Bea Patton; and many cousins and dear friends. He retired in the 1990’s from SUNY Brockport as a communications professor and campus radio station general manager, his most notable accomplishment being a complete overhaul of the campus station equipment and major transmitter power upgrade which put WBSU on the map and exponentially increased listenership. He was an avid cyclist for many years, enjoyed War History, classical music, playing pool, dubbing movies for his vast collection to share with others. He is survived by his son David (Mary) of Rochester; brothers Francis (Judy) of Annapolis, MD, Stephen (Ann) of Caroga Lake, NY, and Jerome (Carol) of Miami, FL; sisters-in-law Kathleen of Albany, NY and Deborah of Falls Church, VA; several other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is predeceased by his wife Marcia, parents, in-laws (Gordon and Marguerite Puffer) and four brothers (Nicholas, Daniel, Christopher, and Phillip). Louise Kinney Louise Kinney, 83, of Spencerport, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 18, 2023 at Hospicare of Ithaca. She is survived by her two daughters, Michele (Peter Deboer) Kinney, Suzanne (Brian) Dozoretz; grandson Max Dozoretz; brother Gilbert (Joyce) Coutlee, sister Delores Long and sister-in-law Corinne Coutlee, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Michael Kinney; parents Jean Paul and Gloria Gougeon Coutlee; sister Lucille McLaughlin, brother Jacques Coutlee, sister Helene (Ronald) Celentano, and brother-in-law Richard Long. Louise was born in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and grew up on Seneca Lake, in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. She was a 1961 graduate of Penn Yan Academy. She and her husband raised their family in Spencerport, NY. Louise was a retiree from the Spencerport Central School District. Extremely kind hearted and always helping others, Louise will be dearly missed by many. Services will be held on Friday, November 3rd, at Walker Brothers Funeral Home in Spencerport, NY. Get out & grow! Planting a meadow by Kristina Gabalski If you are thinking of ways to reduce the size of your lawn, planting a meadow is one option. A meadow increases biodiversity in your landscape, offers habitat for wildlife and helps support pollinators. Even if your yard is small, you can designate an area to growing a meadow. Another obstacle to meadows can be landscape ordinances. Check local laws to see if there are “weed” or mowing ordinances. If there are, you might be able to apply for a variance if you would like to grow a meadow. Penn State Extension says the first thing to consider when planting a meadow is how much lawn you want to retain. You may want a play area for children or desire lawn close to the house. Meadows work well for sunny areas and contain a mixture of native grasses and wildflowers. There are two types of meadows: annual and perennial. Penn State says annual meadows grow rapidly the first year and provide an abundance of color quickly. Annual meadows need to be replanted each year. Beware, however, many of the common canned meadow mixes include nonnative species which can spread into areas you don’t want them. Aggressive plants include bull thistle, Canada thistle, nodding thistle, crown vetch, dame’s rocket and purple loosestrife. You might recognize many of these as invasive plants that should be avoided in your landscape. Carefully check to see what seeds are included in annual meadow mixes. Perennial meadows take several years to establish. The plants have very deep root systems and will spend the first year focusing on root growth. The second year they will begin to

grow and spread above ground, and by the third year the meadow is fully established. Once your meadow is established it is virtually maintenance free with only occasional weeding and mowing once each year. Preparing to plant a meadow can be time-consuming, depending on which method you use. A more involved method is to remove sod either by cutting it into strips and digging it out; solarizing the vegetation with a heavy mulch which you keep in place for at least two months; or using herbicides such as Roundup (use only as directed). If you are preparing a large area for meadow planting, you can till the soil and plant a cover crop to outcompete existing vegetation. Harvest the cover crop and then till during hot, dry weather. All meadows should be tilled before planting seed. The best time to plant is in the spring. Water during the first six weeks. As a much easier alternative, you can just discontinue mowing an area and allow nature to take its course. Wildflowers such as goldenrod, asters, milkweed and joe-pye weed will come in on their own. Pull excess plants that become aggressive or remove their seed heads. You should mow your meadow once in the spring after the first year. Penn State says that during the first year, mow several times while plants are small to control weeds. Mow to about four inches – just above the level of the desired plants. Wildflower choices for your meadow include black-eyed Susan, blazingstar, butterfly milkweed, goldenrod, New England aster, wild lupine and purple coneflower.

Thanksgiving food drive underway in Brockport Brockport Community Connection (BCC), a newly founded nonprofit in the heart of Brockport, is collecting food donations for the upcoming Thanksgiving meal basket distribution. Committed to “bridging the gap between need and service,” the BCC is streamlining distribution to individuals and families in need within the Brockport School District who live south of Route 104. BCC expects to serve more than 200 households this holiday season. Identified needs include mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, applesauce, and canned fruit. Monetary donations are also welcome. New York State Secretary of State Robert J. Rodriguez was in Hamlin on October 24 for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the Lakeshore Septic Sewer project in Hamlin. The project was awarded nearly $7.9 million in grant funding through the State’s Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative. In 2019, Lake Ontario saw record high water levels resulting in devastating flooding in communities that call the lakeshore home. These events forced emergency road closures, caused degradation of public infrastructure, inundations and disruptions of septic systems, and restricted public use of popular tourist destinations, which negatively impacted public safety and local economies. Residents along the Hamlin lakeshore depend on on-site sewage disposal systems, or leach field systems. During periods of flooding these systems are rendered ineffective and pose a potential risk of contamination to Lake Ontario. To mitigate health risks to users and negative impacts to the environment, this project included the construction of a new public wastewater collection system. The town of Hamlin installed 60,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer force main and associated appurtenances (including individual grinder pump stations), which connected over 290 homes along Lake Ontario to a public sanitary sewer system and ultimately to the Monroe County Northwest Quadrant Wastewater Treatment Facility for treatment and disposal. Hamlin Town Supervisor Steve Baase said, “The Lakeshore Septic Sewer project was a big haul made easier by the partnership with New York State and with the help of the REDI Team. The new infrastructure will be stronger and more reliable during times of flooding, which is critical to the health and wellbeing of our residences along the lake’s shoreline.” “I’m glad to see the completion of this REDI project in Hamlin,” said Assemblymember Stephen Hawley.
“I’ve seen firsthand the damage caused by flooding in the region and the public health issues it creates. These upgrades to the sewage disposal systems were much needed and will go a long way toward protecting our community.” A similar event was held in Webster later in the day to mark the completion of projects that involved: raising and realigning approximately 2,000 linear feet of Lake Road and installing a closed drainage system with outlets to Irondequoit Bay; installation of a masonry flood wall and living shoreline embankment stabilization in Sandbar Park; and a new masonry flood wall constructed around the Sandbar Wastewater Pump Station to keep water from directly flowing into the building and damaging electrical and mechanical equipment. New York State Secretary of State Robert J. Rodriguez said, “The Towns of Hamlin and Webster experienced significant flooding in 2019 that caused tremendous damage to their vital shorelines and public infrastructure. Through these completed projects funded through the State’s REDI program, we have not only repaired this damage, but we’ve built back these lakefront communities better and more resilient than they were before.” In response to the extended pattern of flooding along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, New York State established REDI to increase the resilience of shoreline communities and bolster economic development in the region. Through REDI, the State has committed up to $300 million, to benefit communities and improve resiliency in regions along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Since the creation of the State’s REDI program in the Spring of 2019, 134 REDI funded local and regional projects are underway, including 28 projects in the design phase, 30 projects in the construction phase, and 76 projects completed. The Torchmen to perform concert in Spencerport Southern Gospel NY is bringing Canada’s number one gospel quartet to Spencerport for a concert on Saturday, November 4, at 4 p.m. They will be singing at Spencerport Bible Church, 1948 North Union Street. In 1969 four men including Walt Andres met at Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church in St. Catherines, Ontario and embarked on a journey that The Torchmen say only a creative and soveriegn God could imagine. Just a few months after that journey began, a young man named Mike Moran joined the group, having previously been part of the Hisey Brothers Quartet. Mike is still a big part of The Torchmen and
he is now joined by Sandy MacGregor, Norbert Reda and Jon Hisey. All of these men have many years of experience behind them, and say they are looking forward to being a blessing to everyone who comes to hear them. The Torchmen have written original songs but also love to sing the old hymns which were always a big part of the church. Southern Gospel NY will be receiving a $15 donation at the door which will be given to The Torchmen to help with their ministry and travel expenses. Brockport Exempts The shelves of the North Bergen Food Pantry.
N. Bergen Food Pantry needs a new home The North Bergen Food Pantry, on North Bergen Road in the town of Bergen, will soon be losing their space. The food pantry was established in August of 2019 by Pastor David Fish as a mission activity for the North Bergen Presbyterian Church. Fish, seeing the great need in his rural community, set up the pantry with the help of volunteers, Foodlink, and donations from local churches, farmers, individuals and area businesses. His goal is to combat food insecurity in his much-loved rural community. On December 31, 2023, the North Bergen Presbyterian Church, which has stood for nearly 200 years, will be permanently closing its doors because of dwindling patronage. Without the church building, the pantry must vacate. The Food Pantry cannot afford the maintenance and upkeep of the church building, and is looking for another space to accommodate the operation. “I’m so hoping that someone will come forward and offer us a place. We have what we need; refrigerators, freezers, shelving units and, most importantly, volunteers who are willing to continue this mission. We need at least 2,000 square feet of space. A space that offers handicap entrance, parking, and a restroom would be perfect,” Pastor Fish said. In the four years the pantry has been in operation, the households served have steadily increased. The elderly and those on fixed income have especially benefited from the food provided. “There is great need in our community. In 2022 we helped over 1,157 individuals from 394 households. Not only do we help families with food insecurity, but we also offer a warm environment and often foster relationships that may lead those in need to other services,” Fish said. FeedingAmerica.org reports that 87% of counties with the highest food insecurity rate are rural. In 2022, osc.state.ny.us reports that 11.7% of Genesee and Orleans County residents live in poverty. According to Fish, the pantry attendance grew 269% between March and December 2022. “As a result of the pandemic, food costs have risen, and there have been supply-chain issues causing many families to make difficult decisions with regard to feeding their families,” Fish said. Pastor Fish is very devoted to keeping this muchneeded food pantry alive and thriving into 2024 and beyond. He is reaching out to the communities of Genesee, Orleans and Western Monroe to help him find a place to continue his mission. I appreciate and want to thank you for all of your support over the years. I am currently your Town Justice running for re-election on the Republican and Conservative lines in the upcoming election. The other Town Justice running for re-election is Martin Maier on the Republican and Conservative lines. During my time as Town Justice, I have presided over 5,300 cases. Each case stands on its own merits and no two are alike. My goal has been, and is, to treat everyone fairly, with respect, and to listen to their concerns and answer any questions they may have. This may be the first time they have been in court and I want to ensure they have a positive experience with the Court. The fines, surcharges, decisions or judgements are a result of the laws. But if they are listened to and have all of their questions answered, then I feel I have done my job to the best of my ability to allow the individuals “their day in court.” The Court does not make the laws or the rules that must be followed (such as Bail Reform). That is up to the Legislative branches of our government. I bring this up now since we have a Democratic opponent this year. The signs and advertisements state “Finally a change” and “Bringing Change to the Court”. Change is a word that has been used in prior elections when people feel something is wrong or there is a better way to handle things. My opponent has not mentioned or stated what needs to be changed in the Court. The judicial process is not changed by the Court. The Laws are not changed by the Court. My twelve years of being your Town Justice allows me to use my experience to ensure that each individual is treated fairly and with respect. I conduct myself with professionalism regardless of what type of case I may be presiding over. It could be Town Ordinance, Town Dog ticket, a traffic infraction or a criminal case such as a DWI or an arraignment of a felony charge such as murder. I have heard them all. As Town Justice, we are on call 24/7 for arraignment. We can, and do, get called out in the middle of the night to perform our duties. Those individuals also get the same respect and professionalism as if it was during normal court hours. There is nothing about this process that needs or can be changed. I am asking for your vote (Early voting begins Oct. 28) on November 7th and support for another four years based on my experience and my professionalism in the treatment of all individuals in Town Court. This is no place for a “change”.

New teacher residency program paves the way for sustainable careers in education A $3.6 million grant from the New York State Department of Labor’s Empire State Teacher Residency Program launches a new county-wide collaboration tailored to strengthening teaching in Monroe County schools. The Monroe Regional Teacher Residency Consortium will support the training of 120 aspiring PK-12 teachers who enroll in 15-month master’s degree and initial teacher certification programs at the University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education and Nazareth University’s School of Education over the next two years. Through a combination of education and residency experiences, these teacher candidates will work toward becoming well-prepared, licensed local educators. Initiated by a new partnership with Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, Monroe One BOCES, and select districts, the Monroe Regional Teacher Residency Consortium is a paid teacher residency program designed to prepare skilled teachers in high-need certification areas for careers in Rochester-area schools while giving them hands-on classroom teaching experience, mentorship, and employment. “We are excited to be a part of the Empire State Teacher Residency Program,” says Ty Zinkiewich, superintendent of Spencerport Central School District, one of the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES districts participating in the teacher residency program. “Our district has always embraced innovation, and forward-thinking programs like this are welcome as we navigate the unique challenges of teacher recruitment and retention.” Residents are compensated for their clinical work, receiving a $15,000 stipend toward graduate school tuition and a minimum salary of $20,000 for living expenses throughout the program. Modeled after medical residencies, this program involves a yearlong, co-teaching partnership that prepares residents to teach effectively. Residents work alongside experienced teacher mentors, strengthening their practices and connections to the school communities in which they are learning to teach. Concurrently,
residents complete a master’s degree program with initial New York State teaching certification in 15 months. Anticipating a demand for 180,000 new teachers in the next decade, New York State officials envision this grant as a crucial factor in addressing the impending teacher shortage. The funding is poised to contribute to the development of committed and skilled educators, guaranteeing students access to high-quality instruction delivered by well-prepared teachers. The program aims to fill workforce gaps already existing in certain areas of the education system. “Presently, almost every certification area is identified as high-need in New York State,” says Kevin Meuwissen, chair of teaching and curriculum and director of teacher residency programming at the Warner School. “This funding enables us to work with school districts to address shortages by strengthening professional and financial supports for those who aim to serve others by becoming great teachers. Research shows us that well-prepared resident teachers better understand the conditions and demands of the profession, establish stronger connections to the students and communities they serve, and become more effective, more persistent teachers over time than those with limited clinical experiences.” Shortage areas in New York State schools include teaching students with disabilities, mathematics, science, English language arts, social studies, world languages, and teaching English to speakers of other languages. Upon successfully completing the program, residents will have opportunities to fill vacancies in their district or other participating districts in the county consortium. “Nazareth’s School of Education has always had robust, clinically-rich teacher education programs, but this partnership allows us to provide a strong model of mentorship and support for teacher candidates,” says Shanna Jamanis, associate dean of Nazareth’s School of Education. “In collaboration with our
district partners, we are able to match candidates to specific shortage areas in districts while working closely with mentors, candidates, and college faculty to develop changemaking educators who are creative, resilient, and passionate about supporting students and their families.” Key goals of the residency partnership are to reduce financial barriers to entry and facilitate employment after program completion. A similar partnership among the Warner School, Nazareth University, and the Rochester City School District brought the first-of-its-kind urban teacher residency – the ongoing ROC Urban Teaching Fellows program – to Rochester in 2022. Participating in the Monroe Regional Teacher Residency Consortium is based on a competitive application process. Aspiring teachers must apply to either the Warner School’s or Nazareth’s graduate teacher preparation program first and then to a complementary selection process for the residency program. Preparations and recruitment activities for the Monroe Regional Teacher Residency Consortium are currently in progress, featuring information sessions scheduled throughout November. RGH first in the region using Aquablation therapy for enlarged prostate Rochester General Hospital (RGH) is the first hospital in the region to offer Aquablation therapy, a minimally-invasive treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. One in two men ages 51 to 60 have BPH, and the incidence increases every decade of life. RGH completed the first Aquablation therapy procedures at the hospital Thursday, September 28. “Rochester Regional is proud to be among the first in the Finger Lakes, Western and Central New York to offer a solution for men with BPH that provides significant, long-last-
ing symptom relief with lower risk of sexual dysfunction or incontinence,” said Dr. Louis Eichel, Division Chief of Urology at Rochester General Hospital. “Aquablation therapy is the next step to furthering our commitment to robotic surgery and men’s health. This new tool is the latest move by Rochester Regional to step up our game as we modernize and transform health care.” Aquablation therapy uses the AquaBeam Robotic System, the first FDA-cleared, surgical robot utilizing automated tissue resection for the treatment of LUTS due to BPH. Using precise imaging, surgeons create a
personalized treatment plan tailored to each patient’s anatomy. Once the map is complete, the robotically controlled, heat-free waterjet ablates the prostate tissue, avoiding critical structures to preserve sexual function and continence. The procedure is performed while the patient is under anesthesia in an operating room, and typically takes about 45 minutes – almost half as long as traditional surgical options. BPH, or an enlarged prostate, is a noncancerous condition where the prostate has grown to be larger than normal. If left
untreated, BPH can cause significant health problems, including irreversible bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and incontinence. Several current BPH surgical treatments often force men to tradeoff between symptom relief and side effects like incontinence or erectile dysfunction. Fundraiser to help Story of Hope recover from flood damage Earlier this year, Brad White, President of Westside Professional Landscape, lost his mom. During her last few weeks, she was placed in hospice. This experience had a profound impact on Brad, his wife, Heather, and family. When he discovered that a hospice home was being built in Chili, he knew he had to get involved. He contacted the Story of Hope Comfort Care Home Founder, Arlene Nanry, and became a partner with them to help get things finished so the home could open. In August, approximately three weeks from opening the home, there was a major rain storm that completely flooded the property where the house sits, causing one of the basement walls to collapse and fill with water. After assessing the damage, the foundation has been determined safe to repair, but at a cost, as this damage was not covered by insurance. Once the repairs are completed, the goal is to open the comfort care home within a month. The community is invited to partner with the team at Westside Professional Landscape as they work to help the Story of Hope Comfort Care Home rebuild and open. Former television executive goes bananas in Brockport Rochester native, Ray Trim, embarked on a fascinating 30-year adventure when he left his hometown and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he worked his way up from casting associate on TV shows like Charles In Charge and Quantum Leap to negotiating contracts at NBC Universal for some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and on hit shows, such as Will & Grace and The Office. After three decades working in the entertainment industry, Ray moved from LA farther east to Palm Springs, where he began restoration of his new home, a true mid-century marvel in an iconic, architecturally significant neighborRay Trim hood. Always a supporter of the arts, Ray also lent his talents to numerous cultural interests in the Palm Springs area, including Modernism Week, as well as becoming a member and supporter of the Palm Springs Art Museum. These civic efforts did not go unnoticed, and soon Ray accepted an appointment by the mayor to serve as a City Commissioner, administrating, among other things, Village Fest, one of the area’s most popular and highly attended weekly arts and cultural events. During his time on the west coast, Ray was fortunate to travel to the Hawaiian Islands on several occasions, training and participating in the Honolulu Marathon. While in Hawaii, he developed a deep appreciation for the splendor of the lush and tropical landscape of the islands. gardening and landscaping, and soon Ray’s desert retreat bloomed with an assortment of palm trees, yucca, plumeria and other desert-scape plants and trees. However, fate was about to bring change once again, this time prompting a return to New York. About a decade ago, Rochester beckoned Ray home when a routine medical procedure left his elderly mother with ongoing health challenges requiring his attention. Weighing these family obligations, he made the decision to leave his desert paradise behind and move back to his hometown to take on the role of caregiver. Ray said “goodbye” to three decades of sunshine and palm trees and “hello” to changing seasons and winter snow. Missing the tropical/desert landscape and gardens he had created, Ray stumbled upon a store in Rochester selling what was labeled as a “Hardy Banana Tree (perennial).” He purchased two specimen plants and set out on a personal mission to successfully grow them and see them through the severe Upstate New York winter and return in the next growing season. The variety is called Musa Basjoo. Of course, the growing season in this regiona is too short to actually produce fruit. However, the tropical effect of these trees with their enormous leafspan is spectacular. Once established, they can grow an amazing two feet per week. They typically grow six to nine feet tall when potted indoors, or 15 feet when planted outside. Fun fact: The banana is not a true tree; it is a giant herbaceous plant. Botanically, this means that none of its parts ever become woody like true trees. The main stem of the banana plant is a large rhizome that grows horizontally underground. The shoots that we think of as “trees” grow up from this underground stem. Four years later, with a lot of care and a few mishaps, his two banana trees had multiplied to nearly 20 as the original plants produced “pups” (new growth shoots) which Ray carefully separated from the main plant and transplanted to other garden locations. Over time, many of the pups have been gifted to friends and family locally and across the country, as far away as Iowa. A local garden center purchased some of the pups last year, and Ray, who has picked up the nickname “Tiki Ray” in reference to his tropical plants, recently hosted a free public event for local residents who were invited to take a mini tour
