Town Hall event in Hamlin provides outreach to area veterans by Tami Raco On Saturday, May 14, a Veteran’s Town Hall was held at the VFW Post in Hamlin. The Veterans Outreach Center, in conjunction with local town and county officials, provided the event free to all veterans. According to Monroe County Legislator Jackie Smith, “This event was designed to address the unique needs of the veterans in our community.” Clarkson Town Board member Nick D’Amuro reached out to Smith after coming across several studies about the impact of the pandemic on veterans’ health, especially mental health. Smith got the ball rolling and pulled together many veteran service organizations and local officials. A Westside Veterans Committee was formed, and they began planning the event at the beginning of this year. The committee consists of Angel Male, Hamlin Town Board; Nick D’Amuro, Clarkson Town Board; Marianne Sernoffsky, Veterans Outreach; Jackie Smith, Legislator District 2; Annie Crane, Village of Brockport Trustee; Randy Hoke,

Nick Stefanovic, Director of Monroe County Veteran Services, addressing attendees.

Guest speakers addressed the needs and services available to area veterans. Shown (l-r) are Angel Male, Marianne Sernoffsky, Jason Richards, Dr. Peter Ziarnowski, Nick Stefanovic, and Legislator Jackie Smith. Sweden Town Board; and Kevin Moore, Clarkson. The event opened and closed with prayer from local pastors, as well as the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem. Dan Hurlbut from Hope Church and Nicholas Russo of Walker Baptist Church led the prayers. Assemblyman Steve Hawley, a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, addressed the audience. Gold Star Mother Dorothy Reid was honored during the ceremony. Her son, Staff Sgt. Nicolas Reid, a Brockport High School graduate, was killed while serving in Afghanistan in 2012. Guest speakers addressed the needs and services that are available to local veterans. Nick Stefanovic, Director, Monroe County Veteran Services, spoke about helping veterans get their benefits and assistance with disability claims. Dr. Peter Ziarnowski, Director of Rochester Vet Center, spoke about mental health benefits available to area veterans. Speakers also included Jason Richards, VA Representative; Marianne Sernoffsky, Supportive Services Manager,

Westside Veterans Committee members (l-r) Angel Male, Hamlin Town Board; Nick D’Amuro, Clarkson Town Board; Marianne Sernoffsky, Veterans Outreach; Jackie Smith, Legislator District 2; Annie Crane, Village of Brockport Trustee; and Randy Hoke, Sweden Town Board.

Representatives from various organizations staffed tables to provide information to attendees. VOC Veteran Services; and Angel Male, representing VFW Hamlin Post 6703. At the event, there were fourteen tables staffed to answer questions and provide further support. Representatives from Monroe County Veterans Service Agency, Blue Star Mothers, Hamlin VFW Post, Hamlin Town Hall, Honor Flight Rochester, VA Suicide Hotline, Rochester Vet Center, Upward Bound Education Benefits, Gold Star Mothers, Veterans Outreach Center, VA Benefits, NSVA – Navy, Bus Pass-Veterans Outreach/RTS, and Assessor Liz Spencer were in attendance. The event was well attended and provided vital information to those in the community. County Legislator Smith said, “Our veterans have put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and families; after selflessly serving our country, the very least we should be doing is supporting them. Veteran support must be a priority.” Smith encourages veterans to reach out for support and ask questions so they can be connected to the services that are in place for them.

To continue serving area veterans, the committee has arranged for the Veterans RV to be present at local summer events, including Hamlin Wheel Fest, Brockport Arts Festival, and Clarkson Good Neighbor Day. Veterans and their families are encouraged to stop by the RV for help and information. For more information on the services available to veterans, call Monroe County Veterans Service Agency at 585-753-6040 or visit www.monroecounty.gov/vsa. Provided photos

CCCSD 2022 National Honor Society Teacher of the Year The Churchville-Chili Senior High Chapter of National Honor Society has selected math teacher Micah Court as the 2022 Churchville-Chili Teacher of the Year. He will be the guest speaker at the 2022 NHS Fall Induction ceremony (scheduled for November 21 at 7 p.m. in the C-C PAC). The tradition of naming a Teacher of Year started many years ago to honor and recognize one teacher each year who goes above and beyond to make a difference at the high school. Being recognized by students for exemplary performance as a teacher is an extraordinary achievement. Micah Court has taught math – geometry, calculus, computer science – at the SHS for eight years. His favorite thing about teaching is building relationships with students: “When students see you as a real person, they are far more likely to be engaged in a class.” He was surprised at being chosen as Teacher of the Year. He said, “I want to thank all of the students that made this possible. You’re

the reason that I love coming to work every day! I would also like to thank all the dedicated, hardworking staff in the district, with a special thank you to the Senior High School math department for their support.” Here are excerpts from several student nominations: •“Mr. Court has been the best teacher all year. In a very tough honor pre-calc class, he made class very fun and entertaining. He always keeps things light and brightens our day. He is a very good teacher, making sure we understand everything that he teaches. His laugh is contagious and lifts our spirits. He provides a tough yet rewarding curriculum.” •“His lessons are intriguing and he knows how to balance work and play. He offers after school help multiple days a week for any students who need it, and his one-on-one lessons are extremely helpful. His classroom is always full of laughter, which makes his students feel like he appreciates our presence just as much as we appreciate his. Mr. Court deserves to be recognized for his joyful personality and diligent work as a math teacher.” •“Mr. Court is always working hard. Even when he is not at school he puts in his best effort. During March, he had jury duty for over a week. Even though he was not here, he still found a way to teach us to the best of his ability. He is always willing to help when it is needed.” •“He is very good at teaching the curriculum and he spends time making sure that we understand the content. Mr. Court is also very good at communicating with us about how we can get better grades and giving us opportunities to raise them at the end of each quarter with extra credit assignments and bonus questions on tests. He takes individual time out of class to help kids with their work, even if they are not in his math class. Mr. Court is a lot of people’s favorite teacher because he is nice, funny and understanding.” •“Mr. Court is an all-around great teacher!” Provided information and photo

Early Bird Special

May 30 is a day to honor those who sacrificed their life for the United States. As a combat veteran, I knew some of those who gave their last measure of devotion, defending the ideals that are embraced in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. Men like Lieutenant Aaron Kingfisher, a Mormon from Utah, who had a wife and twin daughters back in the world. Service to his community and country was paramount. He believed communism was a grave threat to our democracy and he chose to fight in Vietnam before it came to our shores. Men like Sergeant Jesus Rodriguez from Mexico who joined the Army to prove his loyalty and become a citizen of this country. He dreamed of the economic opportunities and political freedoms afforded to citizens of the United States. Men like Spec 4 D’Shaw Andrews, a black man from Detroit’s inner city where civil rights, afforded to most Americans, were denied. Yet, he still defended the Constitution with his life in the hope of creating a more perfect union. These men differed politically, morally and spiritually, but the idea that all men are created equal and can come together and create a more perfect union transcended their individual differences. They sacrificed themselves for the ideal of America. This Memorial Day, please remember to honor those who supported, defended, and honored the Constitution of the United States.

Honor those who sacrificed

This Memorial Day weekend we will see lots of flags waving and hear speeches about the bravery of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. These heroes should be honored and remembered, and one way you and I can do that is by assuring we remain a nation that elects our leaders in free and honest elections. They died for our freedom to vote, and now it’s up to us to do just that. Most of our local Boards of Election are looking for workers – give them a call to make sure you are registered and ask whether they need poll workers to assure the integrity of the election. Orleans County – 589-3274; Genesee County – 815-7804 and election@co.genesee. ny.us; Monroe County – 753-1550, www.monroecounty. gov/elections; or get information directly about being an Election Inspector at BOETraining@monroecounty.gov. Honor our fallen heroes by taking an active role in assuring fair and honest elections.

Offsite tours in the afternoon were provided to Mt. Hope Cemetery, Highland

The Spencerport Fire District hosted attendees for a dinner featuring local delicacies on May 18. Park, Strong Museum of Play, the George Eastman House, and others. Dinner was provided on Wednesday evening at the Spencerport Fire District where the attendees got to experience local dining delicacies such as a “plate” or a beef-on-weck with salt potatoes. The Rochester Area NFFF team worked with the Foundation for many months planning the conference. While

the foundation sought speakers and presenters, the local committee of community volunteers worked with local businesses and venues to enhance the experience for the attendees and showcase all that Rochester and Monroe County has to offer visiting families. Provided information and photos

Hilton Cadets varsity baseball team. Photo from @HiltonVBaseball on Twitter.

Top-seed Cadets have unfinished business in baseball sectionals by Warren Kozireski The 2021 Section V baseball playoffs ended one victory short for Hilton as they lost to Penfield in the Class AA title game, and that memory has been part of their motivation in 2022. But this time they are the top seed after a 17-3 regular season and a Division 1 title. “We lost a tough one last year to a really good Penfield team, but this year the goal is to advance and win sectionals,” senior lefthander Preston Price said. As usual, the Cadets can hit the ball, averaging over seven runs per game during the May portion of the schedule, but they have also been receiving superior pitching with no starter allowing more than two runs per game. “Pitching has been a big key this year; we’ve been pitching really good every game so far, so we just need to keep rolling,” senior Carter Clark said. Prince, headed to play at Niagara University this fall, finished the regular season with a 4-1 record and a 1.48 earned run average. Carter was 3-0 with a 0.35 ERA, junior James Capellupo was 4-1 with a0.56 ERA, and sophomore Steven Kraus was 3-1 with a 1.63 ERA to lead the pitching staff. Combined, Cadets pitchers allowed only 18 runs over 19 games prior to the regular season finale, good for a team 0.96 earned run average.

“Our starters have been going deep (into games) … and a big key is throwing strikes,” Clark said. And the offense has delivered more often than not, led by junior shortstop Michael Whelehan’s .508 batting average, 24 runs scored, and 18 stolen bases at the top of the lineup. Clark was hitting .404 with 15 RBIs and a pair of home runs while junior outfielder Jeffrey Broadnaux led the squad with 16 RBIs. Seven regulars averaged .300 or better, including Kraus, Capellupo, senior Luke Schofield, and Michael Heise. Hilton is trying to win their third Section V baseball title with previous crowns in 1997 and 2008. “Last year was certainly a disappointment, but this group stuck together in the offseason, we did a lot of stuff in the fall and winter; they have a pretty special bond so we hope we can keep rolling here,” head coach Kevin Whelehan said. “McQuaid and everybody in our bracket is tough – we’re going to have to go out and compete because there are no sure things.” Hilton drew eighth-seed Fairport in the first round with the winner facing the winner of #4 Edison Tech vs. #5 Victor in the Class AA semi-finals. “Last year it hurts; you see your friends like that and losing sucks, so our mission this year has been to go out and compete,” Prince said.

Northwood fifth grader to compete nationally with “Sleepy Kiwi” invention Elise Greiner, a fifth grader at Northwood Elementary School, has invented a tasty way to help people fall asleep. In her REACH gifted and talented class, teacher Melanie Klock challenged students to invent something that would help solve an everyday problem. Elise surveyed staff members and learned that falling asleep quickly is a common problem. So, Elise set out to find a natural remedy that even kids could use. Her research led her to discover that kiwi fruit is a natural sleep aid. Elise’s first idea was to bake almond cookies with kiwi jelly, but the result was, well, less than delicious. Next, she put the kiwi in a food processor and froze it to create sorbet balls. When her family tried the sorbet, their mouths began to tingle, and they all thought that they were having an allergic reaction. It turns out that an enzyme in kiwi causes the tingling sensation, which isn’t harmful. Still, Elise didn’t want others to think they were having an allergic reaction, so she decided to boil the kiwi before freezing it, which eliminated the enzyme. Her test participants liked this option but requested that she add Popsicle sticks to make it easier to eat. “The sticks would make it harder to package and market, so I decided to put the sorbet in little cups,” explained Elise. On May 15, Elise and her classmates – Isabella Callan, Madison Eichas, Elyssa Hardesty, Ricky Mooney, Makayla Pignagrande, Caden Setzer, Owen Smith, and Eric Thompson – headed to the Western NY Invention Convention at the Buffalo Museum and Science Center. Some of the other Northwood inventions included “The Clean Carrier,” a reusable bag made of

Elise Greiner with her “Sleepy Kiwi” invention. She will compete at the National Invention Convention in Dearborn, Michigan in June. Dri-Fit material; “Snow Floaters” that help dogs walk in deep snow; and “Hook Trash 22,” which keeps pets from getting in the trash can. The inventors of these designs, Caden, Owen, Ricky and Eric, won awards for presentation, communication skills, creativity and design. Elise was one of four inventors from Western NY presented with the “Inventor of the Year Award.” She will be competing with young inventors from all around the U.S. at the National Invention Convention at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan from June 1 through 3. History on Tap is returning to Genesee Country Village & Museum on Friday, June 3, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. after a several year hiatus. Visitors can sample local craft beverages, enjoy live music, tour a 19thcentury brewery, try craft beers brewed referencing historical recipes, play lawn games on the Village Square, and more. Tickets for History on Tap are available now at https://www.gcv.org/events/historyon-tap/. Pre-purchasing tickets is recommended as this event has limited capacity and could sell out. This event is sponsored by Rohrbach Brewing Co. Visitors to History on Tap will have the opportunity to sample craft beers, wines, and ciders from more than 20 local craft beverage partners, in addition to the Museum’s two historic beers brewed by Rohrbachs, referencing 19th-century recipes: Stocking Hill Ale and Fat Ox Ale. Tastings set throughout the Village Square will give visitors the opportunity to enjoy the museum grounds after hours. Eventgoers can purchase handcrafted beer mugs made on-site at GCV&M by the village potter, and have them filled with the museum’s historic beers. In addition to the museum’s culinary offerings, visitors can enjoy fare from the Stingray Sushi Fusion Food Truck as well as Terry’s Tips Beef and BBQ. Picnic tables spread throughout the Village Square will be available for dining. Visitors will also have the opportunity to tour Grieve’s Brewery, a reconstruction of a c. 1803 Geneva, NY brewery. GCV&M is the only museum in the United States to showcase a working 19th-century brewery. The 1803-themed brewing demonstrations rely on gravity during much of the process, with liquids either pumped by hand or ladled into troughs throughout the building. Portions of Rochester’s old Enright Brewery (closed in 1907) and an early timber-framed

GCC Foundation invites nominations for its Alumni Hall of Fame The Genesee Community College Foundation invites nominations for its Alumni Hall of Fame, which recognizes those alumni who have achieved outstanding success and made a lasting impact on their community. The GCC Foundation intends to induct the next class of nominees during the fall of 2022 semester. “We encourage those who know outstanding graduates to nominate them now,” Lori Aratari ‘89 Alumni Hall of Fame chair said. “We know there are a lot of deserving graduates out there, and we are eager to honor more of GCC’s best and brightest.” Nomination forms can be downloaded from GCC’s Foundation website https://gccfoundationinc.org/wp-content/ uploads/2022/05/Alumni-Hall-of-Fame-application.pdf and emailed to Foundation@ genesee.edu .
