GCV&M’s historic buildings and programming this season will be re-imagined to allow for more outdoor demonstrations and one-way traffic through indoor spaces, while still offering the in-depth look at 19th-century life for which the museum is known. Although the Wehle Gallery will not be opening until July 24, the majority of buildings in the Historic Village will be open and staffed with interpreters offering demonstrations of period cooking, trades, farming, and home life.

GCV&M will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Friday through Sunday beginning July 3. Admission is $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and $7 for youth ages three to 12. Advanced purchase tickets for Saturday, July 4, are available online at www.gcv.org at a discount of $1 off until 5 p.m. on July 3 and include express touchless entry to the museum. For the safety of staff and visitors, mask-wearing is required, and common areas have been re-envisioned to allow for physical distancing while on-premises.

Campers will explore the Nature Center and Historic Village in small, age-specific groupings where they will play 19th-century games, learn about crafts and tradespeople, hike the Nature Center trails, fish, and explore the pond for aquatic life.

GCV&M is working intently to ensure the health and safety of staff and campers by modifying class sizes and programs, and enforcing health and safety protocols to support campers and staff. GCV&M is also offering several ways for the community to engage and enjoy the museum remotely. Beginning July 8, a series of talks looks at life beyond the battles

of the American Civil War, including the war’s impact on medicine, women’s empowerment, wartime adaptations at home, and abolition through the eyes of freed slaves in the North. “Beyond the War: The Struggle for Enfranchisement, Security, Health, & Peace in 1860s America” runs for five consecutive Wednesdays and is free for museum members, $8 per session for non-members, or $25 for the series. ROC Summer Theatre Experience camps set to begin in July OFC Creations recently announced the 2020 line up for ROC Summer Theatre Experience would continue this summer with added precautions and safety measures this July and August.

From July 6 through August 22, 2020, campers ages four to 18 will participate in a variation of 15 musical theater productions across three venues with 25 directors.

Most camps run two weeks from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with options for before-care and after-care hours. Each camp concludes with performances open to family, friends, and the public. Camps will take place at various locations throughout Rochester, including the Kodak Center, the Lyric Theatre, Seton School, and OFC’s brand-new theatre, The OFC Creations Theatre Center in Winton Place Plaza.

Summer 2020 camps include the following productions: ages 4 to 7 – Chicken Little, The Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella; ages 7 to 11 – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Aladdin Jr., Matilda Jr., Willy Wonka Jr., Peter Pan Jr., The Sound of Music; ages 11 to 17 - Footloose the Musical, Sweeney Todd: School Edition, Chicago: School Edition, Rock of Ages: School Edition.

New safety precautions will be added to all summer camps, including spaced drop off and pick up times, keeping campers in groups of no more than 10, wearing masks, especially while singing, as well as hand sanitizing stations and frequent hand washing. OFC’s health advisor, Erika Kozlowski, will be on hand at camp with a focus on health and safety and answering any parent questions. A full breakdown of precautions is online.

OFC Creations Executive Director, Eric Vaughn Johnson, is no stranger to summer camp programming. From 2013 to 2018, Johnson designed and spearheaded the Summer Stock program at RAPA, leading

more than 400 campers throughout the summer. Johnson also served as the artistic director of SNAP Musical Theater for four summers.

“We wanted to bring a one-of-a-kind theater opportunity for youth in Rochester during the summer months,” said Johnson.

“Kids have been stuck inside without any social interactions for months; they need this summer now more than ever.”

Johnson has established a robust team for ROC Summer Theatre Experience, many of whom are well-known area actors and school teachers with training from New York City, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Orlando, Florida.

FASNY urges safety this Fourth of July The Fourth of July may feel a little different this year due to COVID-19 with smaller barbecues, fewer parties, and limited celebrations filled with displayed fireworks.

Although sparklers and similar items can be bought and sold in much of New York State, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges residents to let professionals handle the fireworks.

Although sparklers may look harmless, and almost toy-like, they are incredibly harmful and can cause serious injury and fires. “Fireworks and sparkling devices are extremely dangerous in the hands of non-professionals,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “Although they seem fun, fireworks and sparkling devices can cause serious bodily harm and even death. Fireworks should only be used by professionals who have undergone proper training.”

The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause severe third-degree burns.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), sparklers cause roughly 25 percent of all fireworks-related emergency room visits, the most of any type of fireworks device. A 2019 report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that in 2018, fireworks were involved in an estimated 9,100 injuries. Between June and July of 2018, emergency rooms treated 5,600 patients for firework-related injuries. Children under the age of 15 accounted for 36 percent of these injuries.

According to the report, forty-four percent of the emergency department-treated injuries were burns, with the most common injury to hands, fingers, and arms.
