Shown (l-r): Merton Williams Middle School teacher Anastasia Stamoulacatos, eighth graders Natalie Whitehair and Emma Lenhard, and Sisters of the Greece VFW Auxiliary Post 4658 Cheryl Bilski, Patricia Elliott, Lynn Bilski-Spurr and Joyce King.

Sisters of the Greece VFW Auxiliary Post 4658 presented two eighth graders at Merton Williams Middle School with Youth Essay Certificates of Merit on May 3. Natalie Whitehair and Emma Lenhard entered the Patriot’s Pen essay competition last fall. Open to students in grades six through eight, the 2018-19 competition asked students to examine the statement, “Why I Honor the American Flag.” Social studies teacher Anastasia Stamoulacatos encouraged her classes to enter the contest, which is dedicated to fostering a better

understanding and appreciation of America, and patriotism among today’s youth. Natalie and Emma were presented with a certificate, pin, book of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution, and flowers at an assembly attended by their parents and fellow eighth graders. “When you see veterans, you should thank them for their service,” said Sister Cheryl Bilski, “and by participating in this essay contest you’ve done that.” Provided information and photo

Byron-Bergen Varsity Softball team supports Wounded Warrior Foundation On Tuesday, May 14, the ByronBergen Varsity Softball team honored several local veterans in their Second Annual Wounded Warrior Foundation Charity Game and Fundraiser. The event featured a moment of silence, an escorted procession to home plate, and a salute to the flag. In addition, the Varsity team joined forces with visiting York players to raise over $3,000 for the Wounded Warrior Foundation. “The players are passionate about supporting this cause,” said Head Softball Coach Mariah LaSpina. “Many of them have relatives who have served and a few of them plan to enter service themselves after graduation. I’m proud of their dedication to supporting and honoring our service men and women.” In attendance were several veterans currently with the Genesee County Sheriff ’s Department as well as veterans from the local community. In a touching moment, three of the Varsity players escorted their grandfathers to home plate in honor of their service. “As a veteran, I can’t tell you how proud I am of the softball program,” said Byron-Bergen Athletic Director Rich Hannan. “Coach LaSpina and the players really own this project from start to finish and I applaud them.” Provided information Photos by Gretchen Spittler
