Low Bridge High Water festival makes its return to Brockport On June 11, the Low Bridge High Water canal opening festival returned to the Brockport waterfront after a two-year hiatus; for the first time the festival was held in June where it will most likely remain. A panoply of activities and displays, on land and water, greeted attendees. The fire district displayed their water rescue equipment, and the DPW, a loader for the kids to “touch a truck.” Seymour Library hosted a table of kids activities; The Brockport Police Department’s bike patrol, K9 Brock, and the Camp Abilities conference bicycle all made appearances. For the adults, the Welcome Center displayed architectural renderings of the pedestrian bridge to be constructed by the

guard gate on the Erie Canal; tables provided information on Walk/Bike/Brockport, the Erie Canalway Trail Town initiative in Brockport, and a pollinator garden pop up plant sale. The Sheriff’s Department marine unit docked at the Brockport waterfront offering information on boat safety, licensing, fishing, and more. Attendees took advantage of free kayaking courtesy of Fairport’s Erie Canal Boat Company, which also displayed adaptive kayaking and cycling equipment. Guitarist and songwriter Cooper Scotti and the band GypsyLand provided music throughout the festival. The fourth grade posters (140 in all) were larger and more colorful than in previous years. Instead of the usual canal focus, this year’s posters featured Victorian architecture. The first, second, and third place win-

The Brockport Kiwanis Club held a strawberry shortcake sale during the Low Bridge High Water community event. The shortcakes, using locally grown strawberries, were very well received, and sold out in about three hours. The club also raised additional funds for Ukraine relief. Provided photo.

Congratulations to the Class of 2022! Check out the salute to area graduates in this week’s special section.

Hilton Lions elect new Board The Hilton Lions Club recently elected its new Board of Directors for 2022-23. They are (l-r) Steve Nicot, George Smith, Jack Lehr, Ken Robertson, Kim D. Fay, Diana Hanley, Brad Helmer, and Ralph Preston. The club has grown by five new members in the last year. Anyone interested in joining may contact any Lions member to check out organization. Provided information and photo.

ners came to receive gift certificates to Lift Bridge Book Shop and to see their posters on display at the Welcome Center. The Morgan Manning Carriage House held a clothesline display of the other poster entries. The winning poster, by Kale Kakish, will become the advertisement for next year’s festival. Sharon Marie Bartz and Greta Hall, high school artists in 2021, designed and painted a new Brockport mule and unveiled their creation at the festival. Decorated with Brockport scenes and stabled on the Welcome Center balcony, the mule invites visitors to the Welcome Center to join him for a photo op. This male mule, known as a “john,” needs a name, and submissions are invited for an historic Brockport name.

Contact Susan Smith, Welcome Center director, with your suggestions by emailing welcomecenter@brockportny.org. Hands down, the biggest attraction of the festival was the strawberry shortcake sold by the Kiwanis Club. Fresh local strawberries served on warm buttermilk biscuits with a topping of whipped cream sold out well before the festival was over. Sales went to fund the organization’s children’s programs; tip jar proceeds went to Ukraine relief. Next year’s festival will honor the bicentennial (1823-2023) of the Erie Canal in Brockport. for his love and passion to help others as a physical therapist. Kevin was much more than a physical therapist, he was an active voice in the Lattimore family, a good friend, and a person who always was looking to pay it forward. Due to COVID-19 large gatherings have been a challenge. This year we are hosting a pasta dinner on July 7, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Hilton United Methodist Church, 21 West Avenue, Hilton (across from the Parma Public Library). All proceeds from the event will be donated directly to The Kevin Bushnell Scholarship Foundation. Dinner will include pasta, sauce, choice of meatballs, salad, and bread. There will be an option to either dine in at the event or receive take out. Each plate will cost $10. If you have any questions about the event, please call us at 585-392-8001 or stop in at our office, 1026 Hilton Parma Corners Road. We hope to see some familiar faces of the Hilton community as we share stories of Kevin and also donate to a great cause. Kara Engle, Clinical Director Hilton Lattimore

JLU Child Care offers an oasis for Brockport families Heading into her twelfth year of serving the Spencerport community’s childcare needs, Leslie Ball, owner of JLU Child Care, wasn’t searching for new challenges. Then she received notice that New York State was hoping to encourage growth in child care options, especially in communities designated as “child care deserts.” Deserts are regions that do not offer enough childcare spots to meet family needs. The Village of Brockport is a community that has received that designation. The NYS Office of Children and Family services is offering grants totaling $100 million to launch new centers. “When we considered this ideal location and the existing need in the community, the idea of starting over again became more intriguing,” said Ball. “We hope to be able to do for Brockport what JLU has meant to the Spencerport community. Families are searching for the best possible options.” JLU offers a Christian curriculum for children six weeks through 12 years of age. The Spencerport location has grown over the last decade to serve 160 children and their families. JLU Brockport is located in Grinds Plaza at 122 West Avenue, directly across the parking lot from Strong West. The center is currently being renovated and is on schedule to open in September, in time for the upcoming school year. Enrollment is now open. Brockport families interested in more information are encouraged to visit www.jluchildcare. com or call 352-0017. Provided information

Card of Thanks Fred C. Gaines

Thanks to all our friends, neighbors and relatives for all the cards, food and flowers. Also, for all the phone calls and love shown to us at the time of Fred’s passing. He was so loved, and sick for so long. Fred will be greatly missed. Also thanks to Fred’s caregivers: P.T. Rachael (who kept him going), nurses, Dr. Phillip Schrick who took care of Fred, Lydia – I Circle, first responders, Sheriffs, ambulance and emergency workers. Everyone was so supportive. Thanks to our very best friends, Julie and Duane, who made us a “60” Anniversary cake (5-26). Fred said he’d make it and he did! Fred is with our son, Eric, and is finally able to breathe.

Sweden works with Clarendon on expanded water The Town of Sweden is working with the Town of Clarendon to expand access to public water on a portion of Monroe Orleans County Line Road. Letters were mailed this week to Sweden residents who will have the opportunity to tie into Clarendon’s existing water line and some who will have the opportunity to work with Sweden and Clarendon to extend the line a bit further. Clarendon and Sweden entered an intermunicipal out-of-district user arrangement

in 2014 for part of the County Line Road. This new effort is to remind some residents that public water is available if they so choose and to extend the service, if desired and financially practical. Sweden continues to pursue public water expansion although changes with some of the federal funding have disqualified the Town from some programs for the time being. Provided information

Tuesday June 21 Rochester held the contentious GOP Gubernatorial debate hosted and broadcasted by Newsmax. Four Republican candidates came to the Rochester Kodak Center on Ridge Road to square off on issues related to the upcoming GOP primary. Voting for this is Tuesday June 28. Frank Presciutti, owner of Russo’s Pizza in Greece, held a pre debate rally at his business Tuesday afternoon. He provided complimentary pizza and soft drinks open to the community as an effort to show support for Congressman Lee Zeldin who is a GOP front-runner in the candidacy to run for NYS Governor this fall against Kathy Hochul. Lee Zeldin is New York State’s youngest attorney, graduating with his law degree from Albany Law School at the young age of 23. He started his own successful law practice in Smithtown, NY in 2008. Zeldin is an officer in the US Army. He was active duty until 2007 serving in the Iraq war and has been in the reserves since 2007. In 2010 Zeldin beat a Democratic incumbent in the NYS Senate 3rd district race. In 2014 he then was elected to the United States Congress in 2014 representing NY First Congressional District. Zeldin won seven consecutive races since 2010 unseating two Democrat incumbents along the way. He quickly became a leading voice in America on top local, domestic and foreign policy issues. His proven track record has earned him many endorsements including the New York Post. Presciutti just recently become active in local rallies and hosted a Unity Rally on May 1st at the Italian American Community Center to show support & unity to the freedom supporting GOP candidates. Presciutti who went to college for Political Science stayed away from politics most of his life. This changed when he recently endorsed Lee as his choice. At the pre-debate rally retired Senator Joe Robach attended to show his support of Congressman Zeldin. Also in attendance was retired Gates Chief of Police James VanBrederode running for NYS Senate, Marcus Williams who is running for State Assembly 137th district and Len Morrell running for State Senate. The rally ended at 5:30 pm and most then attended the debate which seating began at 6:30. For more information on Lee Zeldin visit www.zeldinfornewyork.com Paid for by Russo’s Pizza
