Spencerport teen wins RDGA Women’s Championship Title For the first time in the 10-year history of the Rochester District Golf Association (RDGA) Women’s Championship, the reigning RDGA Girls Junior Champion can also be called the reigning RDGA Women’s Champion. On Sunday, July 19, 14-year-old Julia Zigrossi of Spencerport completed the first-time sweep of both titles, winning the 36-hole RDGA Women’s Championship at Brook-Lea Country Club with rounds of 75-77 for an 8over-par 152 total. Less than five days earlier, Zigrossi captured the 2020 RDGA Junior Girls title at Mendon Golf Club, posting a final round of 3-under-par 70 for an even-par 146 total to win the 2020 title by two shots. Zigrossi held off a talented field of women that included three players tied for second place at 12-over 156 - Oak Hill’s Claire Yioulos, defending Women’s Champion Mikah McDonnell, and three-time RDGA Women’s Champion Jenna Hoecker, who was playing on her home course at Brook-Lea. This year, for the first time, a medal was also given to the top finishing 50-and-over player as the senior medalist. This year’s honors went to Tammy Blyth of Monroe Golf Club, who finished in sixth place with a 163. The RDGA Women’s Championship is named in honor of a past Brook-Lea member and local women’s golf champion, Danielle Downey of Spencerport. Downey played as a professional on the LPGA Tour before being killed in a car accident in 2014. The fact that this year’s tournament was held at Brook-Lea was especially poignant due to the fact that it was held during the week traditionally reserved for the LPGA Tour’s Symetra Tour stop held there. When that event was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, Brook-Lea invited the RDGA to host its Championships there for the first time since 2009. Provided information
Last weekend, Alex Bieler of Boy Scout Troop 324 led a group of volunteers, including his parents, grandparents, fellow scouts from local troops and their families, and some friends, while they built and installed a landscaped perennial garden at the Clarkson Town Hall. The purple salvia, red cone flowers, and yellow gerber daisies will come back every year and bring a splash of color to the intersection of Lake and Ridge Roads throughout the summer. Alex also built a sturdy wooden bench and placed it under a shade tree for those visiting graves at the West Clarkson Cemetery. These are to be the visual “bookends” for his Eagle Scout project, which is a Clarkson Historical Scavenger Hunt app that is in the final approval stage at Google. The app will allow people to learn about the buildings and people who are a part of the town’s history. Did you know that a young soldier from Clarkson who served in the Civil War and lost his life at the Battle of Gettysburg, is buried in West Clarkson? The app will ask you to locate his grave and discover what flower his mother compares him to in the inscription found there. As you answer questions in each location, you will learn more about the area and its history. Those interested in a bit of Clarkson history will soon be able to download the app and explore virtually. Watch for the announcement of the app’s official release on Christa Filipowicz’s “Town of Clarkson Supervisor” Facebook page. Provided information and photos
