Local FFA members take one-of-a-kind road trip to National Convention Six members of the Byron-Bergen Chapter of the FFA joined over 72,000 attendees at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, on November 2 and 3. However, their adventure began four days prior when they loaded up the tour bus and set out on an agriculture-themed road trip complete with educational experiences, sight-seeing, and celebrity photo-ops. They shared this journey with the Belleville Henderson FFA, Indian River FFA, and Alexandria Bay FFA. “I really loved meeting people from all over the U.S.,” said tenth grade FFA member Grace Mundell. “The people I met and got to know on our bus were amazing and I felt such a sense of belonging.” After a quick stop at the Cleveland Zoo, the group headed to Kentucky for a peek into the world of horse racing. Keeneland racetrack, Churchill Downs, and the Kentucky Derby museum were all on the itinerary as well as Ashford Farm. Ashford Farm is a family-owned horse farm specializing in boarding and training sport horses. While at Ashford, FFA members had the opportunity to meet 2015 Triple Crown Winner, American Pharoah. “I love how everything and everyone in Kentucky revolves around horses,” said Mundell. “I got to pet American Pharoah, one of two living triple crown winners. I learned that the stud fee for him is $250,000 and I learned about how much work and money goes into horse racing.” “We learned that a horse sold for 12 million dollars at Keeneland racetrack and (at Winstar Farms) I learned that Secretariat’s heart was three-times the size of an average horse’s heart,”

BB FFA member pets American Pharaoh. said tenth grade FFA member Paige O’Brien. O’Brien’s favorite part of the trip was visiting Haygard Equine Medical Facility. “I was able to see other career options that I may want to fulfill.” From Kentucky, the group headed to Indiana to visit Tom Farms, the largest landowner in the state. They farm 18,000 acres, 3,500 acres in seed corn and the rest is a mix of soybeans and field corn. The group received a behind-the-scenes look at what goes in to producing over 150 million pounds of corn and soybeans every year. The final stop on their journey was the 96th Annual FFA National Convention. The main sessions were held in Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts. FFA members networked with agricultural industry representatives and representatives from many agricultural, natural resource, and engineering colleges including Cornell University, SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Morrisville, Paul Smiths College, and Clarkson University. “This was a great opportunity for our students to network with FFA members from across the state and nation,” said Byron-Bergen agriculture teacher Jeffrey Parnapy. “There were chapters at the convention representing all 50 states.” O’Brien stated that “making connections with members from other states” was the most memorable part of the convention. Mundell will always remember reciting the FFA pledge at the convention center in unison with 66,000 other FFA members. One of the last stops before boarding the bus back to New York State was to the Indiana State Fairgrounds to attend a rodeo. “I think one of my favorite parts was probably the rodeo, I hadn’t ever been to one before and it was really fun and super cool to watch and cheer for the cowboys,” said Mundell. “In all, that was the best trip I have ever gone on. I will never forget the people I met or the things I experienced and places we went, it really was amazing.” Provided information and photos

Bowling Brotherhood by Tami Raco Years ago, four young boys met at summer camp at Ogden Recreation. Little did they know that this friendship would span all through their school years and beyond to form a bond of brotherhood through their love of bowling. Josh Winter, Manny Panetta, Carter Schum and Jesse Taccone are the powerhouse bowlers for Spencerport’s varsity bowling team. Their love for bowling and their friendship began after they met at summer camp, which led to a play date at Gates Bowl when they were just eight years old. Their passion for bowling really started when Manny was bowling in a Saturday morning bumper league at Gates Bowl, and he invited his new friends to join him. Jesse has bowling in his bloodline; his dad, Ty, and grandfather, Jesse Taccone, were avid bowlers. Jesse’s dad helped coach the boys in bowling technique. “He got me my first bowling ball and taught me how to throw a curve ball,” recalls Carter. The bumper league bowling eventually became travel league bowling. Throughout

the years they won multiple championships and scholarships. Their friendship and bowling skills really took off in middle school when they began bowling at the varsity level in Spencerport. Jesse was in seventh grade and the other three were in eighth grade when they began. This year Carter, Josh and Manny are seniors at Spencerport and Jesse is a junior. They have shared many years of successes. Jesse, at the age of 14, bowled a perfect 300 match against Rush Henrietta. The team was Sectional runner up in 2021 and Sectional Champions in 2022. In 2023, they won the Monroe County division championship, defeating more established programs like Rush Henrietta and Hilton. Josh and Jesse achieved individual top performances, beating out one of the top bowlers in the country, and Jesse was named to the All-Greater Rochester team. The boys team also set a new school record for high series last winter. “The town is often known for soccer and wrestling programs, but these kids developed a new dynasty in a lesser-known sport – bowling,” said Carter’s mom, Ellen. Bowling Brotherhood continued from front page The boys have spent nearly ten years in a brotherhood born from their shared love of bowling. As they approach the end of their school and bowling year together, they look forward to closing out their varsity career together with even more successes and memories. “This is a brotherhood I will always remember,” said Carter. The three seniors (Manny, Carter, and Josh) are wrapping up their senior year and making plans for college and their future but plan to remain best friends. “Our goal is to do our best to leave the bowling team prepared for suc-

cess in the future. Leave it better than we found it,” said Josh. Although bowling is not usually a high spectator sport, the boys enthusiastically agreed that the matches can get “electric and intense.” The boys and their families proudly bring that same Ranger pride to bowling that you often see in higher profile sports. They welcome the community to come feel the energy at their matches. SUNY Brockport joins national initiative to close equity gaps and boost student success SUNY Brockport is one of 18 institutions that is participating in a Student Success Equity Intensive, a comprehensive initiative designed to help institutions close the equity gaps of their Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income students. The initiative is part of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), which is a recipient of funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The comprehensive, team-based effort is designed to accelerate institutional transformation with the help of customized and data-informed decisions grounded in students’ realities. Campus leaders work as a cohort and learn promising practices to close equity gaps and achieve student success goals for Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income students.

“SUNY Brockport is deeply committed to being a great university at which to learn for all of our students,” said SUNY Brockport President Heidi Macpherson. “We share AASCU’s goal of ensuring that socio-economic status and race no longer predict student success. We look forward to continuing to take steps toward accomplishing that goal through our work in this initiative.” The SSEI cohort approach involves peer-to-peer learning across institutions via in-person and virtual Student Success Academies. Participants will have access to resources, such as online modules and webinars, and receive support from subject matter experts in data analytics, equity, student success, advising, institutional transformation, and strategic and systems planning. Public survey available to help shape NYS Master Plan for Aging The New York State Department of Health (DOH) and New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) are conducting a statewide public survey to help shape the state’s Master Plan for Aging (MPA) strategies and priorities. Older adults, individuals with disabilities, and those who provide care for older New Yorkers and people with disabilities are encouraged to take this survey and share their input on how the MPA can best serve their needs The survey is available in English and 16 nonEnglish languages and can be completed online at https://forms.ny.gov/s3/mpasurvey. To choose a preferred language, use the toggle at the top right side of the survey webpage. A paper version is also available to download, print, and complete at https://www.ny.gov/sites/default/files/202309/017405_MPA_PaperSurvey_0.pdf. Bulk copies are available by sending an email to MPA@health. ny.gov. The survey will be open through December 31, 2023. Master Plan for Aging Chair and Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Health’s Office of Aging and Long-term Care Adam Herbst, Esq., said, “Public input plays a crucial role in shaping the Master Plan for Aging, guaranteeing it meets the current and future needs of all New Yorkers. This survey serves as a vital instrument to actively involve older New Yorkers, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers in crafting the plan. Their input will help us create an MPA that effectively tackles the top concerns of our community.”

The MPA is working to establish a blueprint of strategies to ensure that all New Yorkers can live fulfilling lives, in good health, with freedom, dignity, and independence, regardless of age. The MPA, overseen by NYSDOH and NYSOFA, will culminate in a document that coordinates policies and programs for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and their caregivers, while also addressing challenges – with the overarching aim of ensuring all New Yorkers can age with dignity and independence. The MPA involves the collective effort of over 350 public and private stakeholders, including representatives from over 20 government agencies serving on the MPA Council, an MPA Stakeholder Advisory Committee, and experts from a variety of disciplines who are now serving on various MPA Public input is central to this process. In addition to the public survey announced today, NYSDOH and NYSOFA are holding public engagement sessions throughout the state. To learn about recent and upcoming public engagement sessions in a community near you, please visit the Master Plan for Aging website, https://www.ny.gov/new-yorkstates-master-plan-aging/master-plan-aging-community-engagement. A Draft MPA Stakeholder Advisory Report is expected in mid-2024. A Final MPA Report is expected in early 2025. General information is on the MPA website at https://www.ny.gov/mpa. Events planned in preparation for the April 2024 solar eclipse by Colleen Onuffer Mark your calendar: On April 8, 2024, our region will witness a total solar eclipse. This occurs when the Moon, Sun and Earth perfectly align and the Moon blocks the face of the Sun. As a result, the sky will turn dark, stars will appear, the temperature will drop, and animals will think it’s nighttime. You may think it’s too soon to be thinking about next spring but trust me, you won’t want to miss this! The last solar eclipse in Rochester was in 1925 and our region won’t observe another one until 2144 – so this is a rare, once-in-alifetime experience. Our region has been preparing for this astronomical phenomenon for the past seven years. The Rochester Eclipse Task Force, a group of over 700 individuals tasked with raising awareness about the eclipse, has been meeting regularly to provide important updates and share inspirational ideas around themed programming and specials. Filmmakers of TOTALITY – a documentary that will demonstrate how this special event can bring together a divisive country – have been filming across Rochester and even attended the task force’s October meeting. Here are some of the exciting ways around Western New York that you can celebrate this celestial occurrence between now and April 8: •98 Years Since the Sun Went Out November 15 – April 27 Batavia’s Holland Land Office Museum will showcase what life was like in Genesee County in 1925, the last time the area witnessed a total solar eclipse. “98 Years Since the Sun Went Out” will show the clothes people wore, where people shopped and worked, and how they saw and reacted to the eclipse. •Rush Public Library Talk – The Great American Eclipse 2024 November 28 at 7 p.m. Hear from NASA Solar System Ambassador Jim Porter as he shares what will happen during the total solar eclipse.

•The Art of the Eclipse: Works by Tyler Nordgren February 1 – February 28 An art exhibit featuring 30 posters designed by artist and astronomer Tyler Nordgren in honor of the 2017 and 2024 eclipses has been displayed at different Rochester locations each month. During February, the traveling exhibit will be in SUNY Brockport’s Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery. •Sun and Moon February 1 – March 3 Also in the Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery on the campus of SUNY Brockport, Sun and Moon will feature the astronomical interpretation of regional and national contemporary artists. •ROC 2024 Solar Eclipse Talk at Ogden Farmers’ Library February 26 at 6 p.m. Dan Schneiderman, the Eclipse Partnership Coordinator at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) will explain the science and history of solar eclipses and how to prepare. •Black Out at Woodlawn Distilling April 5 – April 8 A weekend of fun awaits at Woodlawn Distilling, where they will be releasing a LivCo Sol-inspired liquor and two specialty cocktails. •Solar Spectacle at Genesee Country Village & Museum April 5 – April 8 During this four-day festival of historical programming, hear how authors like Mark Twain and Jules Verne describe eclipses, build your own pinhole camera and find out how early American scientists and astronomers explored the skies more than a century before the space race.

A pair of RMSC branded Eclipse Glasses in front of the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium. •ROC The Eclipse April 6 – April 8 This three-day festival takes place at the heart of Rochester’s total solar eclipse efforts at the RMSC, with hands-on activities, speakers, music, food, streaming coverage and telescopes so everyone under the sun can witness. •Maple Sugar House Demonstrations & Tours April 6 – April 8 Sweet Dream Maple Farm in Corfu will extend their Maple Weekends for the eclipse, with demonstrations, tastings and tours of the sugar house. Visit rochestereclipse2024.org for more information about what to expect, where to pick up eclipse glasses (Note: never look at the sun without them!) and to see events as they’re added to the calendar. Are you planning an eclipse event, exhibit or viewing party? Submit it to rochestereclipse2024.org/submitevent so the Rochester Eclipse Task Force can promote it.

55 mph maximum speed limit for snowmobile trails by Kevin Bamerick Twenty years ago, in early October, state legislators introduced in the upper and lower houses omnibus legislation titled as the “Snowmobilers Rights and Responsibilities Act.” The seven-part provisional bills were drafted by the lobbyists for the state snowmobile association (NYSSA). The primary, agreed upon emphasis was to increase registration fees and to direct snowmobilers to join a snowmobile club. One provision proposed “studying” the 55 mph maximum speed limit for the snowmobile trails. A NYSSA ad-hoc committee was to report its findings on the feasibility to the state legislature by April. Testimonials for and against the study were filed before its release. The state legislation aged two years under the introducers of Assemblyman Joseph Morelle (D-Rochester) and Senator Raymond Meier (R-Utica). In March 2005, Morelle amended his bill for a word change from “studying” to “establishing” the

55 mph speed limit. In August 2005, both bills were debated and passed in their respective houses. In the Senate, with calendar 826, Dave Valesky (D-Syracuse/Oneida) spoke to law enforcement patrols. The official transcript reads: “A 55 mph speed limit, which is strongly supported by the Sheriffs Association of the state of NY, as well, comes to us through the request of snowmobilers themselves. So I will be supporting this bill,” said Senator Valesky. As snowmobile clubs prepare their snowmobile trail signage for next month’s official snowmobile season opening, Congressman Joe Morelle (NY-25) said, “I am extremely proud to have passed the Snowmobiler Rights & Responsibilities Act during my time in the NYS Assembly. Particularly consequential is the mandatory 55 mph speed limit. By curbing speed and making trails with speed limit signs, we are ensuring the continued safety of riders, cars and pedestrians. On this 18th anniversary, I reflect on the act’s success in anticipation of the 2023-24 snowmobile season.”

Deer hunting season is underway and will stir the deer population, which is already active due to mating season. AAA is warning motorists to buckle up, be extra cautious on the roads, and scan for deer and other animals. AAA analyzed New York crash data and found that October, November, and December are by far the peak months for animal crashes, notably deer, in the Empire State. There were 36,743 animal-related crashes statewide in 2022 – up 7% from 2021 – that’s equivalent to one animal-related crash every 15 minutes. Monroe County had the second highest number of animal crashes in the state. Motorists should be especially vigilant at sunrise and sunset. Deer crashes often occur outside daylight hours. Crashes are most common near sunset and in the evening. AAA offers the following tips for avoiding or mitigating deer crashes: •Scan the shoulders of the road in front of you. Deer may dash out from the shoulder or wooded areas adjacent to the road. They often travel in herds. •Follow the speed limit. Lower speed will give you more time to respond to unexpected wildlife movements. •If a collision is unavoidable, apply the brakes firmly and remain in your lane. Swerving sharply to avoid an animal can often cause a more serious crash. Provided information and photo

Hidden places of Hamlin: Yanty Creek Nature Trail by Kelly Jo Stone Hundreds of thousands of people visit Hamlin Beach State Park each year. They come for its beautiful beaches and wooded areas. As residents of Hamlin, it is easy to take this natural wonder for granted. Sometimes, an entire hot summer will pass, and we will suddenly wonder why we hadn’t gone swimming there. Between work and responsibilities, it is easy to forget the value of meandering along the beach. This year was one of those years when time slipped away from us. Seeking something to fill an unusually quiet day, we decided to take our dog for a walk on the beach. As we pulled into the park, my husband slowed by the entrance to Yanty Creek Nature Trail. With a shared look and a shrug, our walk on the beach became a walk in the woods. We explored, enjoying the “Am I a Mammal” story that lines story book trail. We walked slowly, enjoying the unknown. The trail twisted and turned with the occasional overlook that led to nowhere but a beautiful view.

Provided photo.

It was unique to have no true destination and not to know what lay ahead. The trail was surrounded by greenery and trees and covered in leaves and twigs that snapped and crunched under our feet. We had been chatting and enjoying the walk when suddenly we were in another world. Gone were the familiar sounds of walking in the fall, replaced with the silent footsteps on a thick cushion of pine needles. The greenery disappeared into a small grove of black pines. The trees had captured the area, standing like sentinels around the bench that crouched in the center of the grove. We stepped lightly, almost afraid of breaking the magic spell that had clearly been cast. The sun peeked through the towering, outstretched arms of each tree. The smell of pine Kelly Jo Stone and her dog enjoyed an enchanting visit hung in the air. I looked to Yanty Creek Nature Trail. Knights of Columbus hold Silver Rose Service On November 10, members of the Knights of Columbus Council 7707 held a Silver Rose Prayer Service at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Brockport. In attendance were also Grand Knight Scott Nather, head of Council 7707, and Past Grand Knights Larry Peck and Ray Ehnot. Picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Silver Rose.

Peter’s Basilica celebrated in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, 2014. Cardinal Norberto Rivera, archbishop of Mexico City and a member of the Knights, was among the concelebrants. The Holy Father received the silver rose from Msgr. Eduardo Chávez, postulator of the cause for canonization of St. Juan Diego and a canon of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, at the symbolic culmination of the 55th annual Silver Rose program. The program shares the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe and promotes respect for life by participating in this meaningful pilgrimage. The Silver Rose program demonstrates the unity between Knights of Columbus in Canada, the United States and Mexico,

through a series of prayer services promoting the dignity of all human life, from conception to natural death, and honoring Our Lady. Each year, from early March through mid-December, Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion for Knights, parishioners and community members to pray for respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe. SUNY Brockport presents The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Mark Haddon’s novel, Christopher Boone discovers a neighborhood dog has been killed, and is determined to find the murderer. While sleuthing, he happens upon other secrets and lies that seem to challenge his very existence. As someone on the autism spectrum, Christopher’s journey to the truth – both literally and figuratively – is a difficult, but ultimately successful, one. The production is being presented by the Department of Theatre and Music Studies at SUNY Brockport, opening on Friday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley Street. Tickets are $17/general, $12/senior citizens, Brockport alumni, faculty, and staff, and $9/students. They are available at www. fineartstix.brockport.edu, at the Tower Box Office, or by phone at 585-395-2787. As part of the educational alliance between the Department and Geva Theatre Center, the play is being directed by Rebecca Etzine, this year’s Geva Directing Fellow. She is “so grateful that Geva has made it possible for me to come up to Rochester to direct Curious Incident, a bucket list play for me.” Portraying Christopher’s autism requires a delicate hand on the parts of both the director and the actor portraying him. Though auditions did not turn up an actor on the spectrum, according to Etzine, Theo Guth, who was cast in the role,

“is an inclusive education major with a deep and nuanced understanding of autism. One of the reasons why I cast Theo was because he didn’t play the autism, he just played Christopher.” Several things bring comfort to Christopher, one of them being his proficiency with mathematics, which has a presence throughout the play. In an ironic twist, Etzine has dyscalculia, a type of numeric dyslexia. She feels that her “learning differences are nowhere near as challenging as autism, but they have helped me empathize with some of Christopher’s struggles. I do see the poetry and creativity in mathematics and that’s what is influencing my direction of this play. Christopher sees beauty in mathematical patterns along with the order he so desperately craves. This inspired the geometric nature of the set design and the use of number patterns in the projections.” During her career, Etzine has taught and directed in middle and high school settings, as well as in higher education. She enjoys working with her collegiate casts. “They refuel my tank,” she admits. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time will be performed on December 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9, at 7:30 p.m. There is also an ASL-interpreted matinee performance on Sunday, December 3, at 2 p.m. Provided information and photo

Solving canine murders and complex math problems, Theo Guth is featured in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.

Opinion/Comments Brockport American Legion Post supports families and the community The Brockport American Legion Post 0379 supports the Marine Corps Toys-for-Tots program and serves as a drop-off location for donations. Please bring unwrapped toys to Brockport Area Vets Club, 222 West Avenue, Brockport. The mission of the Toys-for-Tots program is to provide hope and joy to deserving children during the Christmas holiday. The Marine Corps Toys-for-Tots program hopes to unite the community and play an active role in the development of our most valuable resource – our children and families. By participating, you will bring joy and hope to a child in need and provide a positive experience for our children. The American Legion embraces the spirit of families and the communities. Nationally, the American Legion supports youth baseball and other sports such as junior shooting sports. They also sponsor oratorical contests, Boys State and scholarships. Through the American Legion Family Support Network program, they provide assis-

tance to service personnel and families affected by military service. Foremost, the American Legion is known for its support for those who served their country by lobbying for benefits and providing counseling for vets to obtain those benefits. The American Legion supports veterans transitioning from military life to civilian life. Despite all this, the suicide rate among Veterans is still too high. We want to do more. Locally, our post supports the “Walk-to-School” program, provides funds for the Eagle Scout program, county youth baseball programs, and donates time and money for other service organizations. Our local American Legion Post is limited by both funds and membership. I encourage all those veterans in the community to join the local Post 0379. Together, we can have a stronger community.

New USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map unveiled Gardening is probably the last thing on your mind as Thanksgiving weekend wraps up and we head full-speed towards the December holidays, but a brand-new USDA Hardiness Zone Map was released November 15, something that hasn’t happened for over ten years. Considering that time span, it’s not surprising that there are some changes – mainly slight – for our area. The USDA says that compared to 2012, the 2023 map reveals that about half the country shifted to the next warmer half zone, while the other half of the country remained in the same half zone. This means that the areas which shifted to a warmer zone saw an increase in temperature in the range of 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. The new map is much easier to read than previous ones. It shows that local trends mirror the national trends. In 2012, the 6b Zone was limited to northern Orleans County and the northern portion of Monroe County – right along the moderating zone created by the waters of Lake Ontario. The rest of Orleans and Monroe counties was in Zone 6a. In 2012, Genesee County was split in half, with the northern portion being in 6a and the southern portion being in 5b. Most of Wyoming County was is the 5b Zone in 2012. The new 2023 map puts the majority of Orleans County in the 6b Zone and Monroe County, as well, is mostly now in the 6b Zone. Genesee is now all mostly in 6a – meaning half the county did not change at all, but the other half did. Wyoming County now includes Zone 6a along its northern and eastern side, while the southern and western side remains in 5b.

The USDA explains that temperature updates to plant hardiness zones are not necessarily reflective of global climate change because of the, “highly variable nature of the extreme minimum temperatures of the year, as well as the use of increasingly sophisticated mapping methods and the inclusion of data from more weather stations.” The USDA says global climate change is usually based on trends in overall average temperatures recorded over long time periods. Plant hardiness zones represent what’s known as the “average annual extreme minimum temperature,” at a given location during a particular time period, the USDA says. The zone designations do not represent the coldest it has ever been or ever will be at a specific location, but averages the lowest winter temperature for the location over a specified time. This information is important for gardeners because the low temperature during the winter months is a major factor in which plants will survive in specific locations. For Zone 5b, the minimum temperature is -15 to -10 degrees Fahrenheit; for Zone 6a, the minimum temperature is -10 to -5 degrees Fahrenheit, and for Zone 6b, the minimum temperature is -5 to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. The new map was developed jointly by USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Oregon State University’s (OSU) PRISM Climate Group. The USDA says the map is more accurate and contains greater detail than prior versions. The 2023 map includes data from 13,412 weather stations as compared to 7,983 stations used for the 2012 map. The map, as well as additional information for gardeners and growers can be found at https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/.

Holly Trolley Rides at the New York Museum of Transportation Continuing its holiday tradition, the New York Museum of Transportation will welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus on December 10, 16 and 17. They’re eager to meet the kids and pose for pictures. Holiday decorations, complimentary cookies and hot chocolate, and the fondly remembered Midtown Plaza Monorail will add to the fun in this unique celebration of the holidays. Admission including the trolley ride is $17 for adults and $13 for ages three to 14. Rides depart at 11 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 2 p.m., 2:45 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made at www.nymtmuseum.org/Christmas. The only operating trolley museum in New York State features a ride through the country that harks back to the era of interurban trolleys carrying holiday shoppers between cities and their rural homes. The vintage trolley car is heated and ticks off the miles in style as it has for almost a century. The Midtown Plaza Monorail exhibit brings back memories of Christmas at that

downtown shopping mall. The exhibit features the two-car train suspended from its original rails, along with photos and descriptions of the monorail’s history. A popular attraction at the museum is the model railroad room with its huge HO gauge model railroad running several trains at once. A 20 foot long N gauge representation of the Rochester Subway provides a complete view of the Subway from Rowland’s Loop to the car barns on Rochester’s northwest side. Kids will also want to sit in the driver’s seat of a fire truck, climb into the cab of a steam locomotive, and ring the bell in a trolley snow sweeper, all inside the museum’s spacious main hall. The New York Museum of Transportation is located just 20 minutes south of Rochester at 6393 East River Road in Rush, and can be reached from I-390 exit 11. For information, go to www.nymtmuseum. org. rious dancing, and lots of snow – a trifecta sure to warm the hearts of the whole family this holiday season. Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters on their way to a Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. OFC’s largest dance show of the season sparkles with enormous tap numbers, revolving pianos, and a shimmering score featuring well-known standards including “Blue Skies,” “Sisters,” “I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm,” “I Love A Piano,” “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep” along with the perennial title song. Directed by OFC Executive Director Eric Vaughn Johnson, with music direction by Teressa Bala and

choreography by Caeli Carroll. The set design is by Jack Haldoupis, the owner of A Horse with Wings who designed the entirety of OFC’s The Old Farm Café. “We are thrilled to bring this heartwarming musical to our community,” shares director Johnson, “This is truly a holiday show for all ages. Whether this a movie or music that you are familiar with, or you’re brand new to this show, or event OFC, seeing it come to life as a stage musical, with our talented cast, will be an experience we invite families to enjoy together.” Performances of White Christmas run December 7 through 23 at OFC Creations Theatre Center, 3450 Winton Place, Rochester. Tickets are now available at https:// www.ofccreations.com/whitechristmas or by calling 585-667-0954. Provided information and photo
