A visit to Brockport helps scientists developing robotic guide dog by Kelly Jo Stone, Freedom Guide Dogs for the Blind On a rainy spring day, two men climbed from their car. We excitedly waited in the parking lot for them to approach. Freedom Guide Dogs for the Blind has been training and placing guide dogs since its inception in 1992 by Eric and Sharon Loori. Their organization has several trainers, including Guide Dog Mobility Instructor Jeff Butterman who resides in the Rochester area. That instructor and the promise of blindfolded walks had drawn Donghyun Kim, a faculty member and Advisor of the Manning College of Information & Computer Sciences, and Hochul Hwang, a Ph.D. student, both from the University of Massachusetts. The guide dogs in training waited patiently in Donghyun Kim with a prototype for a robotic guide dog. a van nearby. With handshakes and introductions While their prototype for a robotic guide completed, the astonishment began. dog is still in the initial stages, their They pulled an innocuous case from their research required a walk with an actual trunk, laying it on the ground at our feet. guide dog. He found himself led in circles with a guide dog. his hand on the handle. The robot marched around the parking lot with high, rhythmic steps. What a sight it must have been, the parking lot damp with falling rain, cars sporadically parked, and four people with their attention focused on a small robot. As we spoke, asking and answering questions, we learned that their hope was that the robot world would someday integrate on a user-friendly basis into the guide dog community, offering another route for those in need of a guide dog. Strides to ensure the ability of robots to interact with the guide dog community are underway. The UK charity Guide Dogs and the autonomous delivery robot company Starship Technologies conducted a pilot study on how guide dogs respond to autonomous delivery robots. The study involved guide dogs accompanied by their owners or trainers out on their regular everyday activities, encountering Starship Donghyun Kim (left) and Hochul Hwang delivery robots along the way. visited Brockport from the University of MasAdditionally, there are portable handheld sachusetts to conduct research to help them devices that guide users through outdoor and indoor obstacles using a special control develop a robotic guide dog.

gyroscope device that moves users’ hands. But the robotic guide dog we watched move around the parking lot that day was a replica of a dog – offering a future user the instant recognition of being a guide dog user without the responsibility of caring for a live animal. As we stood discussing the endless possibilities, their eyes repeatedly strayed to the red van that sat just steps away. Then it dawned on us that these two scientists were just as eager to see the real dogs as we had been to see the robot. A blindfold walk consists of donning a blackout blindfold and allowing a guide dog to lead you on a walk. Those who live in the Rochester area may have witnessed the odd sight of a blindfolded person walking with a dog in harness. The experience is overwhelming, intimidating, enlightening, and humbling. And for these two scientists necessary, you see; creating a robotic guide dog in form is only one part of the equation. A guide dog in harness has a very particular set of standards. The research allowed consideration of the harness, its placement in the hand, and necessary adjustments for height and angles. But additionally, research on the ratio of force versus pull. There can be no guesswork as the robot will lead a living person. The scientists explained all of this, and we nodded as if we understood. Still, throughout the day, I had small flashes of having been dropped into an episode of the television sitcom “The Big Bang Theory.” After introductory sniffs and kisses, they were ready. They traversed the streets of Brockport several times with different guide dogs. Each dog has its own traits, quirks, and strengths. Hochul Hwang and Donghyun Kim excitedly experienced them all. They expressed their surprise at the combination of subtle and clear guidance of the dogs as they led them down the sidewalk and across the streets. After more than an hour, we had done all we could do on the streets of the Village of Brockport. However, questions remained, so we moved our adventure to the local Lowes. We watched in fascinated awe as electronic equipment was attached to link them and the harness. Scientific jargon danced around my ears. While I understood the concept of needing to know how much pull the dog issued to guide a user around and through obstacles, the conversation was lost on me as they spoke of converting the data into graphs and measurements. After several walks around the store, we found ourselves staring mesmerized as they produced a laptop and excitedly began exclaiming over the initial results. I looked around; here were these two bril-

Their minds were working at a speed that I frankly envied. I scratched the top of the guide dog’s head and glanced down. The yellow lab looked up at me with a magnificent, happy, doggy grin. His eyes were alight with happiness, and it occurred to me that the experience had been just as odd and amazing for them. Provided photos

Westside Challenger Baseball completes its 11th season An awards presentation and year-end picnic took place on Saturday, July 9, as Westside Challenger Baseball wrapped up its 11th season. A record 65 players participated every Saturday morning starting the beginning of June at Nietopski Field at Sweden Town Park. It was a great season for the players, families, friends, coaches, and volunteers. Each game was filled with fun, laughter, and camaraderie. The Saturday, June 11, game was played at Frontier Field. The players and their families were also treated to a Rochester Red Wing game on June 28. After each game, all the players and their families and friends, along with assisting “buddies” are treated to food and drinks. The season ended with each player being recognized and presented a Championship Trophy at the Awards Ceremony. There is no charge for any family to have their children with disabilities play Westside Challenger Baseball because of donations from program sponsors, including the Rochester Press-Radio Club, Rochester

Police Locust Club, Brockport Lions Club, Tom Ferris of Connors and Ferris, Brockport Kiwanis Club, Kendall Lions Club, Brockport Rotary Club, Tom Pontrello of The Legends Group, Ultimate Sports and Apparel, Sweden Community Foundation, Lt. Paul Wheat and the Brockport Police Stetson Club, Mark Gaisser and his Rooster Pub and Pizza, and many individual donors. These sponsors cover all the costs, including uniforms, equipment, field and pavilion rental, insurance, food, drinks, photos, and trophies. Westside Challenger Baseball would not exist without the generous commitment of its sponsors. Thanks also go to the players and coaches of Brockport Bisons Baseball for always being there to serve as “buddies.” Westside Challenger Baseball has already started planning for next season to provide quality baseball and fun for children with disabilities in the area. Cancer Support Community Rochester joins #GetScreened campaign Cancer Support Community Rochester (CSCR) is joining its network partners in the launch of a new social media campaign, #GetScreened, to encourage people to take a pledge to get their routine cancer screenings and urge their friends and families to do the same. The #GetScreened initiative comes as a response to the relaunch of the White House’s Cancer Moonshot, in which the President and the First Lady announced a call to action to prioritize a return to routine cancer screenings. It is estimated that nearly 10 million screenings were missed over the course of the pandemic. Routine screenings are a critical part of a person’s healthcare. Missed screenings may result in cancer being detected and diagnosed at a later, more advanced stage. “Had I not had the screenings, I would not have found it,” said Jennifer, who was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram. “I had no other signs or symptoms. So, I was grateful that I was able to have a mammogram to catch it quickly and get into my treatment quickly, and right now I am cancer free.” To promote a return to routine screenings, Cancer Support Community Rochester, alongside its network partners, will be promoting the pledge during the week of July 25. People will be directed to a specially designed landing page

that also serves as an educational hub for information and support related to routine screenings. Routine screening education and support is a key aspect of the #GetScreened campaign because distress, such as anxiety and depression, is commonly experienced by people impacted by cancer. Distress can also prevent individuals from seeking cancer screenings. For this reason, Cancer Support Community Rochester provides emotional support and referral services along the entire cancer continuum – from before screening to waiting for test results and throughout diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship – at their location and via CSC’s toll-free Cancer Support Helpline at 1-888-793-9355. “An annual cancer screening is one of the most important and proactive measures that everyone can take in managing their own health,” stated James Love, Chief Executive Officer, Cancer Support Community Rochester. He added, “Finding cancer early through screening is vital to starting treatment earlier and accessing resources to help them along their cancer journey like the social and emotional support programs we offer at CSCR.” For more information about the pledge and to access resources on cancer screenings, visit: https://www.cancersupportcommunity.org/getscreened. First Responders honored at Union Church Again this year, Union Church in Churchville honored First Responders during an outdoor service on Sunday, July 17. Representatives of the Sherriff ’s Office and the Churchville Fire Department attended, and a firetruck was there for children and congregants to enjoy. Also represented were two police officers who took part in the 300-mile bike ride to Washington, D.C., in honor of all fallen officers. Cheryl Fridley spoke briefly about their experience among the thousands of officers who participated in this ride. The church holds this annual service to bring attention to First Responders and honor them for their tireless efforts in serving the community. “We thank them for their brave service and for responding to calls so quickly. Our wish is for their safety while they keep us safe,” said a church representative. “First Responders are our greatest heroes. We salute and thank them for their service. Let them know that their commitment and dedication do not go unnoticed.” After the brief service, there were ice cream treats for all, which the Chili-Paul Wegmans generously provided. “We thank Wegmans for all they do for the communities surrounding them as well as for the treats we enjoyed,” said the representative. Opinion Opinions expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of this publication or its employees.

Honest criticism is good for our community Thankfully, when it comes to negativity, there is not much here in Clarkson beyond a few people displaying profanity on their property. For the most part, Clarkson is a close-knit community where people watch out for each other regardless of their political slant. Valid, honest criticism and differences of opinion of our elected officials from either side are healthy for our society, community, and democracy. It should be encouraged and not be considered negative by those being criticized. It can be argued that when it is referred to as being negative by those being criticized, there may be some validity to it. Personal attacks are negative, but differences of opinion are vital to successful progress. In fact, criticism and debate formed our precious constitution. Nationally, there is a difference between “fake” news and honest criticism. Calling criticism that is based on facts negative is dishonest. An elected official who thinks they are being criticized unfairly has every right to dispute it honestly but should not simply deflect by calling it negative or partisan. In Clarkson, neighbors look out for each other no matter what their political beliefs, so don’t let the term “negative” or “negativity” mask valid criticism and good debate. Sheldon Meyers Clarkson

Unconstitutional New York I really appreciated the truth pointed out by the wellinformed Rodger Jestel about the ethnically exclusive Sullivan Act, in his letter to the editor (Westside News, July 17). Sadly, it did fail to mention the continued racial prejudice applied to subsequent New York gun laws aimed at disarming and excluding pointed demographics and ethnic groups. Infringement taxes disguised as fees, waiting times, and the need for a few upstanding friends of moral and ethical character who would vouch for one’s ability or necessity to defend themselves (having no business in such a private affair). All of which can be allowed or denied and up to the mood or agenda of a judge (all blatantly unconstitutional). I also thought the Editor’s Note pointing out early working drafts of the Virginia Constitution (that were suggested and not agreed upon as they failed to extend and uphold the very liberty that was so sacrificed for in the following years), was historically interesting in respect to the development of the agreed upon and signed final drafts. Clayton Antonoli Spencerport

Denying a medical procedure puts women’s lives at risk Abortion is a medical procedure. Abortion is needed if there is an ectopic pregnancy, extrauterine pregnancy, mole pregnancy, or any combination of these maladies. Abortion is sometimes needed if there is low amniotic fluid, preeclampsia, incompetent cervix, or any combination of these conditions. There are many other conditions that lead to the need for abortions. That is why medical texts are large, hefty books. That is why doctors study for years to obtain a license to practice. Denying this medical procedure to women puts their health and life at risk. This is needlessly and unnecessarily cruel. Outlawing abortions will also mean a loss of privacy and personal freedoms for women since spontaneous miscarriages and abortion are indistinguishable. For example, to establish if a woman has received abortion pills in the mail or through the internet, the state will have to obtain her internet searches and phone records and go through her mail and package delivery. If a pregnant woman plans a vacation in another state, she will have to clear her plans with the local politburo. The loss of privacy and personal liberties shows a lack of respect for women. You may disagree with some of the reasons for an abortion, and I may disagree with some of the reasons for abortions, but outlawing abortion puts women’s health, if not their lives, in jeopardy. It also causes a loss of the most personal privacy and freedom for women. Outlawing abortion is a cruel, abusive means of controlling women. Abortions need to be legal and safe for everyone. William Fine Clarkson
