BOCES 2 CTE students help others ROC with their hands Monroe County students in grades seven through 12 had an opportunity to try their hands at applied learning during the first-ever ROC With Your Hands event. Meanwhile, BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education students tried their hand at being the teachers. On October 4, CTE student representatives left their residential and commercial electrical, criminal justice, cosmetology, and medical laboratory assisting and phlebotomy classrooms at WEMOCO. They traveled with the CTE work-based learning coordinators to Rochester Community Sports Complex in downtown Rochester. Those who stopped by the WEMOCO area of the event had the opportunity to explore a variety of careers. Guests tried their hand at hairstyling, were guided through look-

BOCES 2 CTE was represented at ROC With Your Hands by (l-r) Residential and Commercial Electrical student Matthew Cudzilo (Hilton); Cosmetology student Laura Wallace (Hilton); Medical Laboratory Assisting and Phlebotomy student Arriena Brown (Hilton); Work-Based Learning Coordinators Cindy Christensen, Brandilyn Steves and Carisa Harding; Criminal Justice students Corrina Leo (Hilton) and Gabe Loran (Kendall); and Residential and Commercial Electrical student Jake Bischoping (Hilton).

ing at slides in a microscope, participated in an impaired person simulation, observed the technical intricacies of a robot following a path and learned about tools of the various trades. Additional representatives from skilled trades were on hand to allow career exploration in various fields including advanced manufacturing, heavy equipment, and automotive technology.

This event was hosted by The Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA) and the City of Rochester in partnership with Monroe County, Monroe Community College, the Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program, the Builders Exchange of Rochester, and UNiCON. Spencerport resident in South Africa for military skills competition Army Command Sgt. Maj. Marc Maynard, a Spencerport resident, is among four New York National Guard soldiers and one airman who will represent New York and the United States at the South African National Defence Force Military Skills Competition held from October 23 to 30. The event involves an obstacle course, a swimming obstacle course, an 8-kilometer run, grenade throwing, a range estimation contest and rifle and pistol shooting with standard South African weapons. The annual event was last held in 2019 and canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019 the New York National Guard sent five soldiers and five airmen to participate as part of a State Partnership Program relationship with the South African National Defence Force. This year, because the invitation arrived in late August, New York is sending only five people, according to Maynard, the team coach. He also headed the New York team in 2019. Because the New York Army National Guard has 2,000 Soldiers deployed and the New York Air National Guard is busy too, there were not as many personnel who were able to travel internationally available at short notice, Maynard explained. Military personnel from around the world are invited to the competition each year, Maynard said. The United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Federal

Republic of Germany, and the active Army, all sent teams to the 2019 event, Maynard said. The New York National Guard has had a State Partnership Program relationship with the South African military since 2003. The program pairs state National Guard with foreign militaries to build military-to-military relationships and interoperability. While the New York National Guard regularly conducts exchange events with South African military leaders, soldier-to-soldier interactions like the military skills event are the real core of the program, said Maj. David Myones, the New York National Guard’s State Partnership Program director. “It fosters the spirit of cooperation at the soldier level,” Myones said. New York National Guard leadership felt that participating in this event was important, even though it was harder to field more than one team at short notice this year, Myones said. Brazil, which New York is also partnered with through the State Partnership Program, is participating in this year’s South African military skills event, so that is even more reason to be represented, Myones added. Because this is a relatively short notice event, the New York National Guard team has not been able to train collectively, Maynard said. The members have been working out on their own, he added. They will get a few days on the ground in Potchefstroom,

South Africa – where the contest is held – so they can practice some of the skills, Maynard said. The rifle and pistol shooting events require that foreign competitors use the South African R4 rifle and Z88 pistol. The Z88 is similar to the M9 Baretta pistol Americans use, so that is an advantage, Maynard Army Command Sgt. Maj. Marc Maynard said. Maynard said that while the New Yorkers would have liked more time to prepare, just being able to be part of the event will be worth it. “Everybody is stoked. It is a good time,” he said. “The South Africans are a great host nation and very welcoming. They always put together a well-organized event,” Maynard said. Provided information

Stage Whispers returns to in-person discussions After a pandemic-induced hiatus of live, in-person discussions with artists or staff from their productions, guests from Geva Theatre Center will once again visit the SUNY Brockport campus as part of Stage Whispers: Conversations with Theatre Professionals. The first of this year’s talks will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 27, in the Tower Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre, 180 Holley Street. It is free and open to the public, and will feature Maria Cristina Posada Slye, currently starring in Geva’s production of Somewhere. Slye will talk about the play, which is about one of many Hispanic families living in the San Juan Hill area of Manhattan, which was razed to make way for Lincoln Center. The neighborhood was simultaneously serving as a filming location for the first movie version of West Side Story. When one particular family is forced to uproot itself, issues become increasingly complex as some family members wish to appear as extras in the movie. During her appearance, Slye and her Geva host, Associate Director of Education Lara Rhyner, will talk about the displaced/marginalized (both in terms of the play, but also as minorities on stage), being a working Latinx actor, as well as combining musical/choreographic elements in what is, in essence, a straight play. The Stage Whispers series is sponsored by SUNY Brockport’s Department of Theatre and Music Studies as part of their alliance with Geva Theatre Center. The series gives community members insight into the process of professional theatre artists. For more information, call 395-2496. Provided information and photo

Amelia Breton scored three goals on October 14 to break the Churchville-Chili school record in girls soccer for most career goals with 36, and helped lead the Saints to a 4-2 win over Rush Henrietta. It has been a recording breaking fall for Breton. With five goals scored against Greece Athena on October 3, she tied the school record for most goals in one game and, with an added assist, broke the school record for most points in one game with 11. Both records had been in place since 2002. Photo from @CCCSDgsoccer on Twitter.
