•Groves, Charles Earl, age 84, died January 11, 2023. Charlie was born September 2, 1938. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Florence Groves and his wife, Betty Lou p r ince (1995). He was also predeceased by many brothers, sisters, and in-laws. Charlie is survived by his children, pam (Tom) rath, penny (rick) Nersinger, and Mark (Jill) Groves; his grandchildren Jeremy rath, Ashley rath, Cody (Brittany) rath, Shelby (Jason) Moulton, Molly (Hunter) McMillion; five great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and countless friends. Charlie worked on farms early in life then for Domico Construction, CID/Albion Disposal, rVA Trucking and J&M repair. He was an exceptional mechanic on anything with or without a motor, expert welder and equipment operator.

Community helps pet families impacted by Buffalo blizzard

A dangerous blizzard hit western New York days before Christmas bringing heavy snow, damaging winds, and dangerous wind chills. Buffalo was one of the hardest hit areas leading to more than 40 deaths, massive power outages, and extensive property damage. A Facebook group called Buffalo Blizzard was a vital conduit in helping connect people in dire need to available support and resources.

Days after the blizzard, Julia Mungenast, a manager at Pet Friendly in Hilton, noticed people posting on the blizzard page needing help with pet food and supplies. Many were unable to travel, out of work, and out of money. Julia reached out to the Administrator of the Facebook group and asked

if they had any centers that could use pet food donations. She was promptly connected to West Side Community Services in downtown Buffalo, which was actively providing resources to families in need in the hardest-hit areas of Buffalo. Mary Schaefer, the Director of West Side Community Services, responded to the offer to take donations of pet foods and supplies.

On Wednesday, December 28, Julia created some social media posts asking for donations of cat, dog, and small animal food and supplies to be donated at Pet Friendly in Hilton to help those impacted by the Buffalo blizzard. The need was immediate, so she only had a few short days to get the word out and collect items for delivery to Buffalo on Saturday, December 31.

“The community response was incredible,” said Julia.

The owner of Pet Friendly, Hamed Ebrahimi, not only agreed to allow Pet Friendly to be the collection site but also donated a generous amount

of supplies. Another retail pet food store, Pet Supplies Plus in Greece, also donated shopping carts full of supplies.

“Love Rob & Amber Pet Food Pantry” donated an entire pickup truck full of pet food, crates, toys, and more. Suzanne Nugent, a local animal advocate, founded this pet food pantry to honor her late brother and a good friend by helping pets in Monroe County. “We were happy to help animals and their families and felt that Buffalo was in a dire situation and deserved our assistance in getting the community back on their feet. The pantry is run completely on donations, and we are so thankful to the Rochester community for making it possible to help Buffalo,” said Suzanne.

Habitat for Cats of Rochester also donated a large supply of cat food and litter for the Buffalo residents.

In addition, residents from western Monroe County were eager to donate some pet food for the cause. Michelle Johnson, a Clarkson resident, saw Julia’s post and donated. Michelle has

Celebrate Black History Month with Representation Matters concert

As Black History Month begins, the Fine Arts Series at SUNY Brockport honors the commemoration with a concert entitled Representation Matters on Friday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m. The concert, featuring ensembles from the Eastman School of Music in which the personnel are all BIPOC musicians playing music by BIPOC composers, will take place at the Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Tickets are $17/general, $12/senior citizens, Brockport alumni, faculty and staff, and $9/students, and are available online at http://fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 585-395-2787, or in person at the Tower Box Office.

Audiences at the Brockport concert can expect to hear works by familiar composers, such as Miles Davis and Duke Ellington, as well as those a little less familiar, such as Rochester native Adolphus Hailstork, Black female musical pioneer Florence Price, and 18th-century, Guadaloupe-born Joseph Bologne.

Founded in 2020, when Eastman alumnus Travon Walker was a junior, the plan was to gather students of color to tour schools in the Rochester region so that they might highlight their performing talents as well as a repertoire of music by composers of color, as well. Then the pandemic hit and touring plans were squashed. The momentum to share this concept, and this music, with the public was still there, now helmed by graduate student Brianna Garçon.

Walker told the Democrat and Chronicle “Classical music is for everyone, and so is the music created by BIPOC composers… In order to elevate it, more people need to be aware of it, perform these works, and advocate and showcase these pieces and their composers.”

Last spring, when commenting about the hiring of Eastman’s first Associate Dean of Equity and Inclusion, Garçon commented to City Newspaper that “in order for Black musicians to achieve success in classical music, they are typically expected to change the way they talk, what they wear, or the music to which they listen,” which sometimes might be rap or hip-hop rather than standard-issue classical. She adds “I feel as if I have to convert – to assimilate in a way – to the culture at Eastman in order to not be perceived as ‘other.’ And if you go outside of that grain and try to truly be your full Black self, it is perceived as dangerous.”

The latest All-America Selections flowers and vegetables

If you’ve started the search for your 2023 garden seeds, you’ve seen the red, white, and blue All-America Selections (AAS) logo in seed catalogs on pictures of certain varieties of perennials, flowers, and vegetables. Since 1932, the AAS logo on a photo has meant that judges from across North America have tested the new variety and deemed it has proven superior qualities. This can be helpful to home growers as they strive to pick the best flowers and vegetables for their gardens.

According to AAS, winners are determined by independent judges who look for significantly improved qualities in never before sold varieties. Judges look for earliness to bloom or harvest, disease or pest tolerance, novel colors of flowers, novel flower forms, total yield, length of flower or harvest, and overall performance in picking the most outstanding new varieties.

Winners are announced three times each year and the latest round of winners includes a mix of nine flowers, foliage plants, and vegetables.

Coleus Premium Sun Coral Candy is the first ever coleus from seed to win AAS designation. Plants are compact with unique multicolored foliage. Leaves are narrow and serrated and hold their color well, even in full sun. Mounded plants grow 10 to 16 inches high.

Another foliage plant, Colocasia Royal Hawaiian Waikiki – also known as elephant ears – has glossy leaves with bold coloration. Growing to 36 inches in height and width, the leaves feature pink veins and creamy centers. They can be grown in full-sun or large containers and are available only in plant form, not seed.

For perennial lovers, Echinacea Artisan Yellow Ombre has unusual golden yellow blooms all season. Available as seed, this echinacea has a uniform growth habit and multiple branches which produce large numbers of blooms.

Another flowering perennial, Leucanthemum Carpet Angel is a Shasta Daisy which grows to a height of six inches. This is the first-ever perennial ground cover to be selected by AAS, and spreads up to 20 inches. It features pure white blooms which look like angels dancing over a carpet of dark green foliage. It is available as a plant only.

Salvia Blue by You is also a perennial and sports rich blue flowers that bloom up to two weeks earlier than similar plants. This looks like a great selection for Western New York as it has excellent winter hardiness as well as heat tolerance, blooming from late spring into early fall. Remove spent flowers for repeat bloom. It is resistant to deer and rabbits and is available as a plant only.

Snapdragon Double Shot Orange Bicolor is a stunner with open-faced double flowers in shades of orange and orange-red. This plant is part of a new series of intermediate-height snapdragons with strong, well-branched stems which produce more blooms than similar type snapdragons. It grows 18 to 20 inches in height.

Veggie growers will want to seek-out Pepper Cayenne Wildcat with thick flesh walls, a smoky flavor, peppery sweetness, and a mild pungency. High-yielding

plants produce eight-inch fruits which are straighter than traditional cayenne peppers.

Pepper Jalapeno San Joaquin is a super choice for gardeners who like to can, pickle, or make roasted stuffed jalapeños for summer parties. Most of the fruit is set in a short window, with each plant producing about 50 fruits with a hint of heat.

Squash Kabocha Sweet Jade admittedly has dry flesh, but it is sweet and rich in taste. Plants produce high yields of singleserving sized squash with a deep orange flesh. Bake, roast, or puree.

If you’ve been waiting for a tomato selection, Tomato Zenzei is it. This highyielding Roma has fruit that ripens 70 to 80 days from transplanting, and the bushy and uniformly-shaped plants are easy to harvest. Zenzei is disease resistant, being less prone to blossom end rot issues than some Roma types. The fruits are meaty and flavorful.

Finally, if you’ve been searching for the perfect watermelon, Rubyfirm may be one to try. The fruits are small – about the size of a cantaloupe. The bright pink flesh is crispy and very sweet with minimal seeds. Plants yield two to three fruits per vine.

Upcoming bridge work in Ogden

The Ogden Highway Department is advising motorists of upcoming bridge work in Ogden based on information they have received from the New York State Department of Transportation.

NYSDOT will be down-posting the bridge carrying Trimmer Road over the Erie Canal in the Town of Ogden to seven tons. The posting was anticipated to begin Tuesday, January 17. The posting comes following a recent

NYSDOT inspection. Heavy vehicles should seek an alternate route.

NYSDOT will be conducting repairs to the bridge carrying Gillett Road over the Erie Canal in the Town of Ogden that are anticipated to begin Monday, January 23. To complete this work, the bridge will be closed to traffic for roughly eight weeks. This work comes following a recent NYSDOT inspection. Motorists should plan an alternate route during the closure.

Rochester Mended Hearts group giving presentation in Hilton

On Wednesday, February 8, HiltonParma Senior Center will welcome Mended Hearts, an international organization, for a presentation. Mended Hearts has been offering the gift of hope to heart disease patients, their families, and caregivers for more than 70 years.

The local Rochester Chapter 050 has been in existence for 55 years, and is dedicated to alleviating the stress and trauma associated with heart disease and surgery. They bring together patients, spouses, family

members and medical professionals to form a network of caring individuals to educate and empower others.

Parma Hilton Historical Society visits fourth graders at Village Elementary

In December, fourth graders at Village Elementary in Hilton were treated to a presentation on the indigenous peoples of New York. The presentation was given by the Parma Hilton Historical Society. The presentation aligns with the fourth grade social studies curriculum that focuses on where native groups settled across the state.

The presenters set up an array of artifacts including clothing, weapons, and tools that allowed the students to get up close to history. The presentation also included many photographs that students could examine. When asked about their favorite artifacts, many students had a lot to say. “The weapons were my favorite because it was cool to see how they used them,” said Giorgio Ruggiero. “The animal skins were my favorite because we got to see what they

Students were excited to dig deeper into many of the concepts they learned about in class. For example, Lucas Rogers said, “It was cool to see how they used the bows and arrows to hunt for food.” McKenzie Utter stated that she learned how the Native Americans used cradleboards to keep their babies safe while they completed daily tasks and chores.

When asked about the most enjoyable parts of the presentation, the students had many different answers. Nina Colline, McKenzie Utter, and Jaxon Bolender all enjoyed the various animal furs and that they got to touch them. Student Temperance Johnson’s favorite part was being able to get to see the artifacts up close. “It was like we were in the past, living their lives all over again!”

We are so thankful for the Parma Hilton Historical Society’s visit! We hope the presentation continues to spark the students’ interest in the history of their local area and New York State!

Byron-Bergen awarded agriculture education grant

Byron-Bergen agriculture teacher Jeffrey Parnapy was awarded a $1,700 grant through New York FFA’s Incentive Grant Funding Program to support agriculture education and the local FFA chapter. The Byron-Bergen agriculture initiative was designated by the Cornell University affiliated program as a “high-quality growing program.” Agricultural education at Byron-Bergen was spear-headed by Parnapy in 2017 after being removed from the curriculum in the 1980s. He is certified in Agriculture Education and received support to launch agriculture classes and the local FFA chapter by then Jr./Sr. High School Principal Pat McGee.

Now as Superintendent, McGee continues to support agriculture education. “Byron-Bergen is a rural community,” said McGee. “It is a testament to Parnapy’s enthusiasm for the subject and the community support, that in just six years Byron-Bergen has developed a thriving agriculture program.”

Since the launch six years ago, Parnapy has been awarded multiple grants totaling over $30,000 to support agriculture and science education, the Byron-Bergen FFA chapter, and hands-on agricultural learning experiences. The latest grant will be used to pay annual FFA dues, fund Parnapy’s participation in the NYAAE conference at Cornell, and update classroom lab technology such as data loggers.

Strelau’s cabaret will feature tunes by both Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, including “Watch What Happens” from Newsies, “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid , “Out There” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, “Popular” from Wicked, and many more. Jonah Martin and Lucy Buerman will join Strelau as her special guests.

Strelau is a Rochester native and has a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Nazareth College. No stranger to the stage, she can often be seen performing around the Rochester area

in various productions and events, and as backup vocals for Josh Groban. As a teaching artist, Strelau strives to instill confidence and joy through the arts in all her students. Favorite performance credits include: The Wizard of Oz (Dorothy Gale), Newsies (Katherine Plumber), Little Women (Beth March), and Urinetown (Hope Cladwell).

Interactive online learning and socialization available for older New Yorkers this winter

Free online classes are available to any older adult in New York through the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) – a simple way to connect with others right from home throughout the winter.

NYSOFA and the Association on Aging in New York (AgingNY) have partnered with GetSetUp to offer interactive online programming for older New Yorkers specifically designed to increase activity and wellness, help individuals effectively use digital technology, and find other learning opportunities. According to one analysis, up to 43 percent of people 60 and older reported feeling lonely. This sense of isolation often gets worse during the winter when weather conditions make it harder for people to interact in-person. Through GetSetUp,

GetSetUp also helps active older adults become more fit, learn to manage their finances, develop new skills and supplement their income. RESOLUTION 2023-19 Upgrade WiFi at Station 1

The following resolution was adopted by the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Brockport Fire District on January 16, 2023.

Resolution to expend from the Brockport Fire District Communications Equipment Capital Reserve Fund for the purpose of upgrading the WiFi equipment at Station 1, located 38 Market Street, Brockport NY 14420.

Whereas, pursuant to General Municipal Law §6-g, the Brockport Fire District did establish the Brockport Communications Equipment Reserve, a capital reserve fund to finance the cost of acquisition of new or used, upgraded, additional, or replacement communications equipment, including, but is not limited to, monies to base station radios, vehicle radios, portable radios and pagers, for communication purposes for the Brockport Fire District and in addition to assist the Brockport Fire District with the expense and cost of integrating with the new communication system implemented by Monroe County and to assure the Brockport Fire District is in compliance with this new system.

Whereas, the internet speed at Station 1 was recently upgraded and there is a need to replace the current WiFi with new Unifi WiFi 6 Access Points and Unifi Cloud Controller at Station 1 since the current WiFi equipment within the building is outdated and needs replacement.

NOW BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Brockport Fire District hereby authorizes the expenditure, from the Brockport Communications Equipment Reserve Fund, a total amount not to exceed $4,300 for the installation of new Unifi WiFi 6 Access Points and Unifi Cloud Controller at Brockport Fire District Station 1, located at 38 Market Street, Brockport NY 14420.

The School District, acting as lead agency under the

State Environmental Quality Review Act and the applicable regulations promulgated thereunder (“SEQRA”), has completed its environmental review and, on October 25, 2022, has duly issued a negative declaration and has determined that the implementation of the type I action as proposed will not result in any significant adverse environmental impacts.

Saints skaters climb to ninth in New York State

The January 12 high school hockey poll f rom the New york State Sportswriter Association had Churchville-Chili’s ice hockey team ranked ninth among Division 2 schools, with a 10-2-1 record. Both losses were by just one goal, and this marks just the second time in the program’s 26-year history that they have appeared in the state rankings.

“It’s nice (being ranked) because it does show a bit of pride in the program when other people see it,” 17-year head coach Brian young said. “We got scoring from three different lines tonight; we’re trying to continue to build because six or seven games in, we only had scoring from one line.

“I think our speed has increased; over the summer, we really took it personal how it ended against Canandaigua, so this year our goal was to be faster and be more confident with the puck,” Carr said.

Farnham scored seven goals as a freshman last season and has exploded offensively so far this season.

“This year playing with Max and Tyler and we just find a way to pass the puck well together and score a lot of goals,” Farnham said. “We need to use our speed out wide, crash the net hard, and put pucks in the net.”

The Saints have five games remaining in the regular season before the pressure of the Section V playoffs sets in, but they feel more prepared with their depth than they did 12 months ago.

“It (being ranked) is good confidence for us; we just need to use that and not get too high on ourselves,” Farnham summarized. “We’re building up our confidence, we’re doing really well right now, and hopefully, we can keep it rolling.”

Lily Brongo, a Spencerport Class of 2022 graduate, was in Philadelphia on January 14 to receive her United Soccer Coaches High School Scholar All-American award. The award honors recipients for a combination of excellence in the classroom (minimum of a 3.75 cumulative GPA) and outstanding performance on the field during their secondary school careers.
