Churchville-Chili Sports Boosters host annual Food Truck Rodeo The Churchville-Chili Saints Sports Booster Club will be holding its seventh annual Food Truck Rodeo on Thursday, August 26, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Churchville-Chili Middle School, 139 Fairbanks Road. There is no entry fee, and all are welcome. The goal of this community-wide event is to raise money to help all ChurchvilleChili High School sports teams. There will be approximately 20 food trucks on-site offering unique menus with something for everyone. Additional vendors, including Tupperware, Tastefully Simple, and an apparel vendor to get Churchville-Chili apparel, will also be on hand. Big Time Sound will provide musical entertainment.

Before the pandemic, the event drew nearly 5,000 people. “This is a fun event for foodies and families from across Greater Rochester,” said Kim Sinicropi, Saints Sports Booster Club president. “We encourage community members and families to come out and support our Churchville-Chili High School athletes.” Attendees should enter from Fairbanks Road and bring cash for food trucks, vendors, and raffles. Antique fire engine group to hold parade and muster In 2020, the Genesee Valley Antique Fire Apparatus Association planned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its formation by hosting a national SPAAMFAA (Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motorized Fire Apparatus in America) four-day convention in Rochester. COVID-19 ended all the planning and support for that event. Now, the association is going to celebrate its 40th anniversary of becoming a chartered member of the national organization with a parade, a muster, and a chapter celebration picnic on Sunday, August 29, at the Spencerport Firemen’s Field along the canal in the village. The site is important in that it is where the

first local antique apparatus enthusiasts met and decided to form an association. The parade of antique fire engines will leave Spencerport High School at 10 a.m. and proceed down Lyell Avenue to Union Street, and then into the muster site where the celebration will begin with plenty of fun for all. Events will include antique fire rigs on display to inspect and enjoy, old engines pumping from the canal, public safety displays, explorer competitions, children’s activities, a flea market, food, and much more. Following an opening ceremony, the muster will continue until 3 p.m. when the chapter will gather for a 40th anniversary picnic. Provided information and photo

The first gathering of the antique apparatus enthusiasts was held on September 21, 1980 at Spencerport Firemen’s Field. Shown above are Spencerport’s 1941 Ward LaFrance, Brockport’s 1930 Seagrave, and Bob and Jim Kurycki’s 1954 American LaFrance.

Ronald Herlan donated his garage sale find of Helen Hastings’ Spring Garden to the Emily L. Knapp Museum. Sue Savard accepted the donation.

A surprising gift of art history Since 2017, when Westside News published an article about Helen Hastings’ art found in a trunk in the attic of the Emily L. Knapp Museum in Brockport, the museum’s board and volunteers have been trying to solve a mystery. Did the trunk contain her studies from her lessons at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art from 1898 until 1904? If so, did she continue to paint? Where are her completed works? Did she sell her paintings? Part of the puzzle was answered in late May of this year when Ronald Herlan stumbled across an original Helen Hastings painting at a garage sale and remembered that 2017 article. He knew the painting was valuable to Brockport’s history and contacted the museum. In early July, Sue Savard and Roberta Hesek met with him to view the picture. It was a painting called Spring Garden, a historic section in Philadelphia, which Helen had submitted to the Art Institute of Chicago exhibition in 1901. When Ronald viewed the museum’s new Helen Hastings Art Gallery, he was amazed at the quality and scope of her work. As a former history professor at SUNY Brockport, Ron understood the importance of preserving local history, and he and his wife decided to donate Spring Garden to the Emily Knapp Museum.

“This picture belongs in your museum,” he said. Christopher Martin photographed the painting’s transfer from Ronald to Sue, and since then, thanks to Sarah Hart’s Facebook and Remembering Brockport posts, another painting has been discovered in Brockport. Gradually, part of the mystery is being solved. Yet, there is more to learn. As with all museum artifacts, provenance is important, and the history of ownership of the picture increases its historical value. Although Helen did not achieve notoriety for her art, and it is not known whether she sold her paintings, its value is significant to Brockport’s local history. Those at the museum now wonder, “How did the garage sale family come to have Spring Garden in their possession?” Hopefully, if the owners see this article, they will call the Brockport Village Office and solve the newest mystery. Spring Garden is now framed and will be available for viewing during the month of September at Hart Gallery, 27 Market Street, Brockport. All of Helen Hastings’ preparatory work for the painting will also be on display. The gallery is open Thursday 2 to 6 p.m., Friday 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Provided information and photo
