Churchville-Chili student chosen for NAfME All-Eastern Band Ryan Dick, principal trumpet player and section leader for Churchville-Chili’s High School Wind Ensemble, was invited to perform in the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME) prestigious 2021 All-Eastern Symphonic Band. Only 146 of the top high school musicians from the Northeast were chosen for this honor.

He was also selected to participate in this year’s All-State band. Director of Fine Arts Jeffrey Smith said, “Ryan was accepted for both the All-State and All-Eastern based on his participation and exceptional performances at solo festivals throughout middle and high school.”

“Ryan has been in the Wind Ensemble since his sophomore year,” said music instructor Allison Chipman. “He has taken part in many All-County and Area All-State festivals. He performs in the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, as well as with other extracurricular ensembles.”

the Eastman Community Music School. His enthusiasm and curiosity are infectious, and he has made tremendous progress on the trumpet throughout his high school career, culminating in his selection for the RPYO, NY Conference All-State, and now All-Eastern. Kudos to Ryan for his impressive accomplishments!”

Ryan has played trumpet since fourth grade and also plays guitar and piano.

He said, “My family has supported me throughout my musical journey, and I attribute a lot of my success to them. They have constantly pushed me forward to be the best I can. I would also credit my lesson teacher, Wes Nance, for helping me get better every week and pushing me to practice and audition for many groups.”

After graduation, Ryan plans to attend Calvin University in Michigan, majoring in computer science and data science. Outside of music, he loves to code, video edit, spend time with friends, and serve at his church.

He said, “I hope to continue to play music my whole life and be able to play in groups after college.”

The NAfME All-Eastern Honors Ensembles consist of a symphonic band, orchestra, mixed chorus, treble chorus, and jazz ensemble. This year, students shared in a virtual weekend experience March 4 through 6 that included keynote speakers, masterclasses with professional musicians, and rehearsals with their conductors, as well as opportunities to network with colleges and universities. Musicians will individually record their performances from home, led virtually by their conductor.

The recordings will be edited together to produce virtual ensembles for the concert performance. The concert will premiere on April 23 during the 57th NAfME Eastern Division Virtual In-Service Conference.

“My family was super happy to hear I made All-Eastern and said they can’t wait for the concert,” said Ryan. “I wasn’t exactly surprised I made it - I was more shocked.

I never would have thought I would make All-Eastern for trumpet.”

Northwood Elementary students start their day with “Mindful Minute”

Students at Northwood Elementary School in Hilton are taking a minute to be mindful before starting their day. During the morning announcements, students are practicing a minute of mindfulness where they listen to a chime with their palms up, then turn their palms over when the tone fades, and then up again when the tone chimes again over the course of one minute.

The exercise not only helps students use their senses to focus on one thing only, but is part of the Hilton School District’s focus on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL).

SEL is the process through which individuals understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, demonstrate empathy for others, and maintain positive relationships. Mindfulness is one of the current practices that supports SEL. The act of mindfulness is simply being fully present in the moment and using strategies

to overcome chaos, stress, negative feelings, pressures, and anxiety.

“The whole school stops, practices a mindful minute and then starts the day out centered and present,” said Assistant principal Kelley O’Connell-Byrne. “We feel it is very powerful, and the kids are so good at it!”

In addition to the Fading Tone practice, students have learned Mindful Breathing - taking three breaths, in through the nose for four, hold for two, and out for four. Mindful Breathing triggers neurons in the brain that tell the body it is time to calm down.

Rachel Pignagrande, fourth grader teacher, also has her students begin their day by writing in their gratitude journals and participate in another Mindful Minute later in the school day.

sports & recreation Sign-ups for Westside Challenger Baseball underway Westside Challenger Baseball will enter its tenth season for all area youngsters in western Monroe County, Orleans County, and Genesee County who have physical and/or developmental disabilities and would like to experience baseball structured to their needs. Due to COVID, there will be some modifications this season, but nothing that will take away from the fun of playing. Children ages five through 20 will participate in a fun, family atmosphere, and there will be coaches and “buddies” to assist them when needed. There is no cost to any family to have their child play due to sponsorship from area businesses, service organizations, and private donations. Players will receive a hat and jersey, trophies at the end-of-season family picnic, food and drink after each game, and free tickets for players and family to attend a Rochester Red Wing game.

The fundamental goal of Challenger Baseball is to give everyone a chance to play. To realize that goal, Challenger

Baseball has two basic rules: every player bats each inning, and every player plays the field. Strikes and outs are not counted. Everybody scores, and everybody wins. Challenger Baseball participants learn the fundamentals of baseball and experience pulling together as a team, being cheered on by a crowd, and being encouraged by their peers. All games are played at Nietopski Field in Sweden Town Park on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. starting June 5.

Challenger Baseball players have always been invited to play in the Challenger Baseball World Series in June at Frontier Field, the home field for the Rochester Red Wings, but due to COVID restrictions, it may not happen this season.

Winners as selected by the NSMA will be announced each month throughout 2021.

The Hickok Belt® Award was originally presented annually from 1950 to 1976. Past recipients include a list of the 20th century’s elite athletes including the likes of Muhammad Ali, Arnold Palmer, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jim Brown, and others who defined their sports.
