Kate is no stranger to the financial world. She has worked at other Credit Unions, as a teller supervisor, as a Branch Manager, and in marketing. Her mother was also in finance as the CEO of the St. Pius Federal Credit Union. “Credit Unions have a special purpose - neighbors helping neighbors. People like investing in small financial institutions that serve their communities. The consistency of the management of SFCU over the years gives the feeling of being well run, and the success comes naturally,” she said. When Kate takes over the role as manager, she will be only the fourth manager since the start of SFCU in 1962. On August 31, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., SFCU members are invited to a special lunch to congratulate Nancy on her retirement and to meet and welcome Kate as the new manager. Spencerport Federal Credit Union is located at 2775 Spencerport Road, Spencerport. For more information on SFCU membership, services, and history, visit www. spnfcu.org

Elected officials and community leaders gathered on August 12 for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of Wellington North, a $16 million, 50-apartment affordable and supportive housing development for seniors in the town of Clarkson. Sixteen of the homes are reserved for seniors in need of supportive services to live independently. Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said, “All of our seniors deserve access to safe, quality, affordable housing in order to live their lives to the fullest while aging in place with dignity and independence. Wellington North and the supportive services offered there will make a real difference in people’s lives. Projects like this are a key part of my administration’s commitment to better infrastructure for all, and it is a privilege to support this effort. I thank

Every adult member of the Credit Union also has one vote in governing and setting policy. Board members are all volunteers, serving a three-year term. SFCU’s services include loans, mortgages, lines of credit, credit cards, and more. Nancy Bodhorn is the current Manager/CEO of SFCU. She will retire on September 2, 2022, after working there for more than 19 years. Nancy has a rich history in the finance world, starting as a teller at a small savings bank in Buffalo in the 1980s. She worked in several aspects of branch banking before taking time off to stay home with her kids. Upon her return to the work world, she came back into finance as a Mortgage Officer. Nancy says credit unions are all about their communities. “SFCU is known for their great member services and lower rates, and our members love us. Our Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee are all Credit Union members, and they serve as volunteers. It is a three-year commitment, and I have never had any problems finding members to serve. People want to be involved in their communities and want to help their neighbors. That’s what we attribute our success to.” During her career with SFCU, Nancy served the community for ten years as treasurer of the Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce. Through the Chamber of Commerce, Nancy was involved with the Dennis Pelletier Youth Hall of Fame Scholarship. She also volunteered on the School-to-Career Advisory Council, where a financial program was developed for Spencerport School students that is now a course requirement for graduation. “In the course, students learn about daily finances, how to budget, manage a household, save and invest. The course also provides an understanding of how interest rates work. We have a scholarship that is awarded each year based on financial literacy and on the student’s commitment to community involvement,” Nancy said. Active in her community during her career, Nancy served on many other boards, committees, and public service associations. In retirement, Nancy plans to travel, visit with her children who live out of state, and spend time with family and friends.Succeeding Nancy as SFCU Manager is Spencerport native Kate Czarnecki. After graduation from Fredonia college, Kate and her family lived in the city of Rochester for eight years. She said, “I really wasn’t looking to change jobs, but when I saw this opportunity in Spencerport, I knew it was my dream job, and I applied. I am so happy to move back to Spencerport, to work in the community, and for my kids to go to Spencerport schools.”

Wellington North is a two-story, Lshaped, elevator-serviced building. There are 50 apartments – 46 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom – for people aged 62 and older. All apartments are affordable to households earning at or below 50 percent of the Area Median Income. Six of the apartments are accessible for people with mobility impairments and two units are available for residents with visual or auditoryTheimpairments.RochesterHousing Authority is providing 50 Project Based Section 8 Vouchers to assist with rent payments. Lifespan, a local senior services provider, will provide case management, in-home health and personal care aides, and financial counseling available as needed.

Nancy Bodhorn (left) is retiring on September 2 after 19 years with the Spencerport Federal Credit Union. Her successor as SFCU Manager is Kate Czarnecki (right). Photo by Karen Fien. by Barbara Burke Spencerport Federal Credit Union (SFCU) says, “Proudly Serving Our Members Since 1962,” and 60 years later, in 2022, their successes continue to grow. SFCU was originally established to serve the Spencerport School District. Through expansions in 2006 and 2017, they now serve those who live, work, worship, or attend school in Monroe or Orleans Counties. What is a Credit Union? According to SFCU’s website, “Credit unions are notfor-profit financial cooperatives that exist to serve their members. Like banks, credit unions accept deposits, make loans and provide a wide array of other financial services. As member-owned and cooperative institutions, credit unions provide a safe place to save and borrow at reasonable rates. Credit Union earnings are exempt from income tax because it is a not-forprofit organization. All profits, after setting aside a proper amount for reserves, go back to the membership in the form of dividends, lower interest rates on loans, or improved services.”

In the Spring of 2022, Joshua Tardy was called to the principal’s office and informed that he had qualified to apply to Boys’ State. Though initially unfamiliar with the program, he did some research and decided to contact the Bergen American Legion for an interview. He was selected to attend the week-long event at SUNY Morrisville along with three other representatives from Genesee County. Founded in 1935, Boys’ State is an annual leadership camp designed to introduce high school boys to the democratic system of government and military-style discipline. In June, Tardy and 500 of his peers showed up to Boys’ State and in doing so, joined the esteemed ranks of Boys’ State alum including President Bill Clinton, Neil Armstrong, Michael Jordan, and Bruce Springsteen. He would later learn that showing up is the hardest part. Along with learning to march, chant, follow directions, and make a bed with military precision, each participant chose an area of interest on which to focus. Tardy chose media, specifically newspaper reporting. His project was to report on an aspect of Boys’ State and his inspiration came from one of the guest “Showing up is the hardest part,” said New York State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt. Schmitt attended Boys’ State as a student in 2007 and shared with the current attendees his almost immediate desire to leave. He contrasted this urge against the values and connections he gained through the experience and his gratitude for how Boys’ State shaped him as a leader. Tardy gravitated to Assemblyman Schmitt’s speech because the assemblyman’s sentiments mirrored his own. After the first night, he also felt ready to go home. “The hardest part was waking up super early and doing PT (physical training). It was fun at first, but then it was such a big change that I wanted to go home. It wasn’t until halfway through the week that I was like, ‘I’m going to actually miss this.’” Despite the bumpy start, Tardy kept showing up. He showed up to march, to chant, to make connections, to write his article, and eventually to enjoy himself as part of the Boys’ State community. “Definitely meeting people from all around New York State was the best part,” said Tardy. “Now (that Boys’ State is complete) I’m able to see how much their lives are different from mine.” Although Tardy had already planned to attend college or join the military after he graduates in June of 2023, he credits Boys’ State with inspiring him to explore options further from home. Tardy’s advice to the students who qualify to apply in the future is: show up. “It really is fun. The food is great. You’ll meet a lot of fun people, and the experience is cool to have.” Provided information Joshua Tardy. Photo by Gretchen Spittler. Step back in time and experience the sounds of organ grinder music at the NY Museum of Transportation on August 28.

Visitors to the New York Museum of Transportation on Sunday, August 28, will delight to barrel organ music played by several “organ grinders” and their unique instruments. Enthusiasts of this early form of musical entertainment will be cranking out tunes from a variety of vintage wind instruments, bringing back the sights and sounds from more than a century ago. Organ grinders were itinerant showmen who traveled through cities and towns, often with a pet monkey or other animal. On street corners and aboard trains and trolleys, they played their tunes for the coins donated by enthralled listeners, captivated by the unique sound of the barrel organs. The New York Museum of Transportation will echo with these sounds while visitors get an up close experience, listening, watching and trying their hands at making the musicTrolleythemselves.ridesare included in the admission price of $10 for adults, $9 for seniors age 65 and up, and $6 youths age 3-12. Admission is free for youths under age three. No reservations are needed. The New York Museum of Transportation is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays and is located at 6393 East River Road, just 20 minutes from downtown Rochester and easily reached from Exit 11 off I-390. Hawley urges residents to call on the governor to prevent ban on high school trap shooting competitions

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) is imploring his colleagues in the Assembly and Senate to take action to save high school trap shooting competitions before a law (A.41001) takes effect September 1 that would prohibit firearm possession in “sensitive locations,” which include all sporting events. This would also imperil the ability of sportsmen’s clubs and other sporting organizations to hold competitions for shooting sports, many of which are often held to support charitable causes. In order to modify the law to address this effective ban on shooting sports events, the Legislature would need to convene for a special session before it takes effect in September. Assemblyman Hawley is encouraging residents to sign an online petition at https://bit.ly/3C3r4YX, that is calling on Governor Hochul and her colleagues in the Legislative Majority to take action to prevent the banning of high school trap shooting competitions. “Trap shooting is one of the safest sporting activities our young people take part in, which also promotes an understanding and respect for firearms and their safe handling,” said Hawley. “Moreover, this bill as written threatens the existence of competitive shooting sports categorically, a celebrated tradition enjoyed throughout New York state by spectators and sportsmen alike for centuries. I don’t believe anyone in our Legislature sees clay-pigeon shooting contests as a threat to public safety, so I sincerely hope we can come together and agree to fix what is a clear error in this legislation as it was passed.”

Wellington North completed in Clarkson

The Kiwanis Club of Brockport offered hot dogs, hamburgers, and sausage food concession at the Brockport Arts Festival, held August 13 and 14. Conditions were perfect for the festival’s return after a two-year hiatus, and festival-goers appreciated the food and beverage offerings while supporting the Club’s mission of helping children in the Brockport community and around the world. The Club is grateful to its corporate contributors – Zweigles, Wegmans, Jimmy Z’s, Mark’s Pizzeria Brockport, and Northside Automotive – who generously provided assistance to their concession effort, and to the festival committee, the Village of Brockport, and all of the volunteers who worked at or facilitated the event. continued from front page Town of Clarkson Supervisor Christa Filipowicz said, “Wellington North is a welcome addition to this important neighborhood in the town of Clarkson. We’re beyond pleased to have this investment in our community where being good neighbors is what sets us apart from Wellingtonothers.”North meets both the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency’s Low Rise New Construction program requirements for energy efficiency and the LEED Green Building standards. A ducted air source heat pump system has been installed to provide an affordable and sustainable source of heating and cooling for the entire building. Wellington North was developed by ODS Management.TheWellington North project complements Governor Hochul’s plans to make housing more affordable, equitable, and stable. In the FY 2023 State Budget, the Governor introduced and successfully secured a new $25 billion, five-year, comprehensive housing plan that will increase housing supply by creating or preserving 100,000 affordable homes across New York including 10,000 with support services for vulnerable populations, plus the electrification of an additional 50,000 homes. Financing for Wellington North included Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits that generated $8.2 million in equity and an additional $5.4 million in subsidy from New York State Homes and Community Renewal. NYSERDA provided $50,000 in support. The Community Preservation Corporation and Chase are providing an $11.7 million construction loan for the project. CPC also provided $1.7 million in permanent financing through a Freddie Mac Optigo Targeted Affordable loan. Monroe County is providing an additional $250,000 in HOME funding to support the project.Over the last decade, HCR has invested more than $500 million in Monroe County to support nearly 6,000 homes, including the newly completed 270 on East on Rochester’s growing Inner Loop and the Irondequoit Senior Apartments, which creatively re-purposed the Irondequoit Mall into 157 affordable and supportive homes forAssemblymemberseniors.

Steve Hawley said, “The completion of the Wellington North development is fantastic news and will enable many of our seniors on low-incomes to live more safely and independently than ever before. As residents begin moving into their new homes, I want to thank all who labored to complete this development for their hard-work to ensure seniors from all walks of life have a safe and comfortable residence to call Providedhome.”information and photos

International Firefighter visits Brockport FD on cross-country ride Brockport Fire-

Kerpen Feuerwehr (FD) outside Colon, Germany, for many years before leaving the fire service and moving north of Munich, where he has lived for the last 34 years. In his personal efforts to support Care for Rare, he has ridden across the U.S. twice previously and has visited over 900 fire stations, spending the night at over 445 of them. He has been associated with Care for Rare for the last eight years after finding out a friend of his had a child suffering from a rare childhood disease. After visiting some of these children in hospitals, he said he learned one thing from them: “Don’t postpone your dreams.” When asked to describe his tour, his response was, “I am living my dreams.”Thisyear, his passage began in San Francisco where he arrived from Munich on March 14. He started his ride on March 22 and has been on the move since then. His plan is to continue to New York City to complete his expedition. He also plans a brief stopover in Monroe, Connecticut, where he will visit the family that hosted his son years ago as part of an Educational Exchange. It was fortunate there were firefighters at the Brockport station when he arrived. His Brockport visit included tours of BFD Headquarters and the Brockport Fire Museum on Main Street where he met Mayor Margay Blackman and was able to see the 9/11 Memorial.“Care for Rare: America” is a non-profit organization with centers in the U.S., Canada, and across Europe, dedicated Joerg Richter got to see the Capen Hose Co. No. 4 Fire Museum during his vist to Brockport. Joerg Richter visited with members of the BFD crew (above) and command staff (below) to improving the lives of children with rare diseases. Care for Rare was founded 13 years ago in Munich with ties to the U.S. in Boston. According to their website, “The Care-for-Rare Alliance comprises a large network of physicians and scientists working at academic pediatric centers and science institutes to support the foundation’s mission: Treating children with rare diseases, discovering the causes of diseases, and developing new therapies.”

The Brockport Fire District wishes Joerg well in his travels and appreciates the time he spent with Providedthem.information and photos Joerg’s route for this cross-country journey.

The coaching staff plans to use the pistol formation on offense and stay with a 4-3 zone“Wedefense.didn’t want to blow things up and have everyone confused to start the year, but instead transition them into it,” Pynn said. And Paul Dick will be back to help the program at all levels from modified to varsity. “As a first-year head coach, I don’t know what I don’t know, so it will be good to have him to bounce thoughts off and for him to evaluate everything.”

will return 18 to 19 players this season, led by three senior returners on the offensive and defensive lines in Michael Unger, Carter Wolf and Justin Meister.Senior Camron Taylor and junior Ricardo Legares will be the primary running backs and linebackers with senior wide receiver Brock Osborne the number one outside target and also seeing time at defensive back. The quarterback position at this writing was still a battle between senior Tyler Meisenzahl and junior Chase Shepanski.

A new chapter begins for Churchville-Chili Saints football

Former Assistant Coach Dennis Pynn takes over for Troy Jeffers, who was at the helm for seven years. Pynn was a longtime assistant under the founder of Saints football, Paul Dick, who was the head coach for the first 22 years. The Saints are coming off a winless 0-8 season and have won a combined two games over the last three seasons. “We need to build a culture, start fresh but not reinventing everything from last year because that would be too much all at once,” Pynn said. “We have two other new coaches at the varsity level and we’re installing new things and a new mindset.” It started in the offseason, reverting back to getting the players as a group back in the weight room. “We had 35 to 50 guys every session, three times a week,” Pynn said. “We need to get as strong as we can.”

What began as a potential battle between wo first-time RDGA Senior champions eventually turned into an epic battle between the two most recent District Senior champions, each vying for their second career Senior Ultimately, it was 2020 RDGA Senior Champion Jim Scorse of Churchville (Stafford Country Club) who emerged as this year’s 55-and-over District Senior champ – narrowly getting past one of the strongest

The final round of the 2022 RDGA Wilson Fitch Senior Championship got under way Wednesday, August 10, at the Links at Greystone in Walworth. By the end of the day, the overall 2022 RDGA Senior champion would be crowned, as well as the winners of each of the four age-based Divisions, including Senior (ages 55-59), Super Senior (60-64), Masters (65-69) and Legends Coming into the final round on Wednesday, Michael Harris of Morgan’s Crossing and Jim Burns of Canandaigua were poised to fight for the 2022 RDGA Senior titlewhich would have been the first for either player – after posting rounds of 1-under-par In Wednesday’s second round, however, two past Senior champions emerged from the field to set up a memorable finish to the 2022OakChampionship.Hill’sKenOgden – the defending RDGA Senior champion who began the final round 2 shots behind Harris and Burns – stumbled out of the gate with bogies on holes 4 and 5 - but quickly made up lost ground by posting birdies on holes 6, 12, 14 and 15. Ogden completed a second round of 71 to finish at even-par 144 for the Championship.Firstround co-leader Harris also struggled on the front side Wednesday with three bogies but fought his way back with four birdies on the back to finish at 73 – eventually finishing tied with Ogden at 144 for the Championship.AsforScorse, who began the final round 5 shots behind the leaders, the 2020 champion displayed his typical tenacity whenever a District title is on the line. On the front side, Scorse posted birdies on holes 1, 4 and 8then continued that effort on the back side with birdies on holes 12 and 15 (against just one bogey on the day at No. 14). On the 18th hole, a par would have given Scorse a 36-hole total of 144 to set up a threeway sudden death playoff with Harris and Ogden. Instead, he stuck his second shot on 18 to within 4 feet of the hole, then sank the birdie putt to complete a near-perfect pionship title with a 1-under-par 143 total. While the first three age Divisions (Seniors, Super Seniors and Masters) were competing together from the Blue Tees, the Legends Division was playing from the White Tees and competing for the first of the four Division titles. In the Legends Division, defending champion Bob Zeman of Sodus Bay Heights took control in Tuesday’s opening round with an even-par 72 to take a three-shot lead over Matt Haefele of Stafford. On Wednesday, Zeman kept his foot on the gas, completing a round of 1-under 71 – winning his second consecutive Legends championship title, along with shooting his age in the bargain. Zeman now has two RDGA Legends Division titles to go with the three Overall RDGA Senior Championship titles he captured in 2011, 2013 and 2014. In the other three Division races, Canadaigua’s Wade Sarkis won the Super Senior Division title in his first year of eligibility with scores of 75-74 for a 149 total; Ravenwood’s Mark Battle won the Masters Division title in a sudden death playoff with Jim Burns with scores of 77-72 – 149; and Scorse captured the Senior Division crown. Scorse storms past field to capture his second RDGA Senior Championship Title

Graduate student Justine Sharda of the Roberts Wesleyan College women’s soccer team was named a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Sharda advanced to the conference selection round. The NCAA Woman of the Year accepts nominations for graduating female studentathletes who have distinguished themselves in their community, in athletics, and in academics throughout their college careers. “I’m honored to have been nominated for this award,” Sharda said. “I’ve had so many amazing opportunities during my time at Roberts and got to work alongside incredible individuals. I am passionate about making an impact in the community and have grown during my time at Roberts in learning what it is to be a servant leader.”

The Saints football history is dotted with a few 8-1 campaigns and solid players such as Kevin and Averin Collier, who are still among the top-25 all-time in Section V in rushing yards in a season and went on to play Division I at the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse, respectively. And former kicker Matt Szczupakowski remains among the top-seven in Section V history in field goals in a season. The new start begins with the season opener against crosstown rival Gates-Chili on Friday, September 2, at home. “I want to compete; I want to change the mindset,” Pynn said. “One game, one practice, one play. “I am a football coach, but I am also a teacher. In ten years, if these men come back as husbands, fathers, and hold a productive job, then I have done my job. “Good people first; the wins will come along with the good people we are producing in our program.”

The Churchville-Chili Saints have a new head varsity football coach – just the third in the program’s history – but it is far from an unfamiliar face.

Please take notice that the meeting time of the Clarkson Planning Board has been changed to 7:00 p.m. effective Farmers are Superheroes!

Comments

When two big male goats, with large horns, wandered onto our property on August 6, we had no idea what to do! Currently, we have no pets, and our animal experience is limited to cats and dogs; not farm animals. We reached out to several state and local agencies, with little or no help offered, unless we could pen the goats. How are ordinary citizens, with no farm experience or equipment, supposed to pen two large male goats that do not want to be captured? They liked it at our property, and they were staying! Spending nights sleeping on our front porch and days nibbling on the bushes that surround our yard, they were content. Over the next eight days, there were multiple phone calls, texts, and social media postings. There were three failed rescue attempts, a temporary pen delivered and assembled, goat feed purchased, a horse trailer delivered (positioned by the pen) – all of which led to the final rescue attempt. Who came to help us? Farmers! Farmers came every day that week, from down the road, across town, and two from near Cooperstown, NY. On Saturday, August 13, after more than six hours that involved running through the woods, reconfiguring the temporary pen several times, having nanny goats as bait, several near captures, some bumps and bruises, the goats – referred to now as Billy and Bob – were both in the horse trailer! These goats clearly had not been properly cared for and did not trust humans. Billy and Bob left our property late that night, in good caring hands, traveling to their forever farm, near Cooperstown. We found out in this process that Farmers are Superheroes! If you need help, they will be there. Sharing this story is important for us to show our appreciation to the farmers that helped us, because they care about the animals and their neighbors. Susan SwedenSmith
