Spencerport Fire Department members have begun using their new three-story training building on South Union Street. The facility includes two burn rooms and multiple types of roofs, allowing firefighters to to practice interior firefighting, search and resucue, laddering, roof ventilation, and more. Hilton Board of Education recognizes district’s Friends of Education

Every school year the Hilton Board of Education honors individuals and organizations in the Hilton school community who have contributed to the education of Hilton students through volunteering or other efforts. This year’s Friends of Education were recognized at the April 9 board meeting.

Hilton High School Principal Dr. Jeffrey Green honored Tom Venniro, Hilton-Parma director of Parks and Recreation, and Make a Difference Day chair. “Tom plans and provides programming for events that uplift our community,” said Green. “He always exemplifies ‘Cadet Pride’ in how he collaborates with the district each year for the annual Make a Difference Day event and works seamlessly with various stakeholders to provide the volunteer opportunities that positively impact countless members of our community.”

Local Olympian Jenn Suhr to be inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame

The National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2024 inductees on April 8. Among the esteemed honorees are NFL Hall of Famer Ron Yary, MLB All-Star Troy Tulowitzki, Olympic gold medalist in pole vaulting Jenn Suhr, and Boston Marathon champion Greg Meyer. Their exceptional achievements in their respective sports have earned them a well-deserved place in the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing their remarkable contributions to athletic excellence.

Suhr has achieved numerous accolades throughout her illustrious pole vaulting career. A superb all-around athlete at Roberts Wesleyan (Class of 2004), she turned her focus to pole vaulting in 2004. A year later, in 2005, she became the U.S. National Indoor Champion, showcasing her immense talent and dedication to the sport.

Suhr’s meteoric rise continued as she won U.S. National Outdoor Championship titles in 2006, 2007, and 2008 while climbing to a No. 2 world ranking. In 2008, she set a U.S. record with an impressive vault of 16’ 1-3/4” and capped off the year with a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.

By 2011, Suhr had risen to the No. 1 world ranking, solidifying her status as one of the best pole vaulters in the world. Her crowning achievement came in 2012 when she won the gold medal at the London Olympics, cementing her legacy as an Olympic champion.

Suhr’s accomplishments extend beyond the Olympic stage. She is a seventeen-time U.S. Champion, the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Champion, and the 2013 IAAF World Championships silver medalist. Remarkably, she still holds the women’s world indoor pole vault record of 16’ 6” to this day, a testament to her exceptional talent and perseverance.

Public meeting for the proposed Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Corridor

The Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State (URCNYS) invites the public to attend a public open house on Monday, April 22, at 6 p.m. at Legacy Drama House, 112 Webster Avenue, Rochester, to receive information about the proposed Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York

URCNYS and its team of consultants are in the process of drafting a Corridor Management Plan for the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Corridor, a 500-mile route that will traverse the state. The Tubman Corridor will run a circuitous route between New York City and Niagara Falls, passing through twenty-one counties, including Monroe County, and ending at the location where freedom seekers including Harriet Tubman crossed the international border to freedom in Canada.

A public open house will be held April 22 for those who want to learn more about the proposed Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Corridor.

“New York State represents a core segment of Harriet Tubman’s life story. Harriet Tubman’s journey of self-liberation from Maryland led her through New York State into St. Catherine’s Ontario,” said Karen Kuhl, executive director of Cayuga County Office of Tourism, who serves as a member of the consortium. “We are excited to share that the proposed route includes Rochester and look forward to informing the community about the national and international inbound travel that awaits.”

The Churchville Stars – a Sunday afternoon attraction

Back in the 1950s, when Arnie Barton delivered milk to Ray and Norma Adams’ home at 211 RigaMumford Road, Sarah Adams would scoot in the opposite direction.

“He had such a booming voice that I would run and hide,” Sarah remembered. “As a little girl, I was scared of him. But as I grew up, I came to enjoy talking sports with him.”

Baseball was Barton’s game, and his “booming voice” served him well on the Churchville Stars semi-pro diamond in Churchville Park. When the 6-foot-2 pitcher/outfielder spoke, his teammates and people in general tended to listen to what he had to say.

Don’t worry about it. It’s OK. Frew can do whatever he wants to do.

You see, as a World War II vet, he survived the 65-mile Bataan Death March in the Philippines in the spring of 1942.

“Never talked about it (after the war),” said Tom Frew of his uncle.

So, that being said...if Bob Frew needed a relight, he would’ve gotten one. Instantly.

After work in the early 60s, Gerry Betteridge would often play 2-on-2 basketball at a driveway hoop with son, Chris, Bob Weiland, and yours truly.

Mr. Betteridge, as Bob and I addressed him, was very strong and very good.

Little did we know that he was a three-sport standout at Churchville High back in the mid-40s.

“My dad (Dick Frew) calls Gerry Betteridge the greatest athlete to come out of old Churchville High,” said Tom Frew, a 1970 C-C grad.

Oh, yeah, Betteridge was a pitcher/outfielder for the Churchville Stars for many years...and he was one of their best players.

“Gerry was the center fielder, and he was a power hitter,” recalled Jerry Spotts, a 1951 Churchville High grad.

After the war, baseball was, without question, the National Pastime in the United States of America. In Churchville, it was especially popular on the Sabbath. That’s when the Stars played, usually during the early afternoon at Churchville Park, not far from the golf course.

“My dad said on Sunday afternoons they drew good crowds,” Frew said.

In 1958, the Churchville Stars’ opponents were Perry, Sonyea, Nunda, Avon, Scottsville, Mt. Morris, LeRoy, Rush, and Caledonia.

Said Margie (Barton) Hunt, “We watched my dad (Arnie Barton) play after church every Sunday for years. Great times!”

Hunt was usually accompanied by mother, Marnie Barton; sister, Barb (Barton) Neale; and little brother, Neil Barton. Chris Betteridge and mother, Bernie Betteridge, were also spectators.

“The Stars were formed by the Churchville Enterprisers, which was the forerunner of the Churchville Chamber of Commerce,” remembered Spotts.

“The Johnsons – Hunk, Gordon and Stan – were also very much involved.”

Darch, Chuck MacMillan, Hal Martin, Hank Boyst, McKinley Jackson, Skip Howarth, Dale Pederson, Dave Pederson, Tim Ackerman, Al Lowden (pitcher), Rich Houck, Bill McMillan, Charlie Maiers, Gerry Betteridge (P/OF), and Arnie Barton (P/OF).

Barton and Betteridge were neighbors, with the Donahue house in between them, on ChurchvilleRiga Road (about two miles south of Churchville). Across the road from their homes was the Riga Center Cemetery.

After Stars games, Arnie Barton would accumulate the broken bats and give them to the Riga Center kids – Neil Barton, John Donahue, Chris Betteridge, Bob Weiland, Roger Pimm, Freddie Church, Geoff Grinnell, Jay Grinnell, and myself.

We would just tape the bats and re-use them in sandlot games in the Riga neighborhood. *

Arnie Barton was also a vet, who served in the navy. After the war, he was pictured with the ‘47 and ‘49 Churchville Stars teams. Also on the 47 squad were Gerry Betteridge, Homer Barton, Gordon Hill, Bob Frew, Bob “Red” Bruton (third base), Stub Miller, Norm MacDonald, Stan Brew, Sam Hessney, Izzo Marino, Charlie Lazaration, and Rich Houck.

“Sam Hessney was a CHS (Churchville High School) coach and maybe the best I ever had at any time,” said Spotts, who occasionally filled in as a Stars infielder in the 50s.

Added Tom Frew, “Sam was the Assistant Athletic Director for the Rochester City School District, and grew up in Churchville.”

The ‘49 Stars roster featured Bob Frew, Houck, Marino, Ronnie Brew, Dick Weidort, Ron Johnson, Bruton, Dick Betteridge, Claude Harris (OF), Stan Griffin, Norm MacDonald, Ken Forbes, Stan Brew, and Barton. * * * *

After his playing days, Barton umpired in the 60s, and showed me how to correctly throw a curveball for a strike.

EPILOGUE: While the Churchville Stars disbanded many years ago, they have not been forgotten.

•Bob Frew worked in sales for Agway and resided in Attica. He passed away a hero in 1981. Thank you always for your service.

•Dick Betteridge, Gerry’s brother, was a standout golfer.

•Gerry Betteridge was a Hall of Fame bowler. He passed away at age 79 in 2007 in South Carolina. His son, Chris, also passed away at age 60 in 2011. Bernie is doing well in South Carolina.

•Gordon Hill was Roger Hill’s father. Roger, who passed away at age 68 in 2015 in North Carolina, was a standout athlete at CCSHS in the mid1960s. Roger was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame last December.

•Norm MacDonald was a longtime Town Supervisor for Riga and my Sunday School teacher in Churchville.

•Arnie Barton and wife, Marnie, have also passed away. Their son, Neil, would become the Athletic Director at CCSHS and daughters, Margie and Barb, both reside in Texas.

•Sarah (Adams) Moffitt was one of the greatest female athletes in Saints history. Unfortunately, C-C didn’t field any varsity girls sports during her time at the school.

•Tom Frew and Jerry Spotts are both doing well and living in LeRoy.

•Ronnie Brew was Stan Brew’s brother, and resided on North Main in Churchville.

•Stan Brew farmed on Bangs Road.

•Marvin Beatty was a Stars skipper for a few years, and son, Gary, a batboy.

•Joe Fosmire was a catcher; Chick Schmidt or Corky MacMullen played first; Vern Button, third; and John Freeman, from Caledonia, pitched.

•Dr. Eli Vail was a contributor and never missed a Churchville Stars game until passing in late 1954.

Sankofa african dance and drum ensemble returns to SunY Brockport

Connecting the robust threads of African dance that are woven throughout Western New York, the Department of Dance at SUNY Brockport will present performances of Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble on Thursday, April 25, through Saturday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m. The performances will take place in the Hartwell Dance Theater on the Brockport campus. •LaDue, Roy A., died April 9, 2024 in Zephyrhills, Florida at age 87. He was predeceased by his parents, Perry and Helena LaDue; his wife, Dianne K. Cornelius LaDue (Feb. 15, 2023); his grandson, Kevin DeMersman (1994); his brother, Harold LaDue; and his sister, June DeClerck. Roy is survived by his children, Roy (NovaLee) LaDue, Terry LaDue, and Sheila (Mark) DeMersman; his brother, Paul LaDue; his grandchildren, Danielle (John) Bittner, Melinda LaDue, Troy (Lauren) LaDue, Jenica (Brian) Renke, and Kyle (Ashley) DeMersman; his eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. •Mutter, Janet Kinnicutt, born March 1, 1953 in Clarkson, and died April 4, 2024 at age 71. Janet was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Joan Kinnicutt. She lived in Virginia and Vero Beach, Florida. She worked as a Secretary at Gannett Newspapers for many years.

George Alvan Pinckney

February 7, 1928 ~ April 16, 2024 (age 96)

Born in Troy, New York, February 5, 1928. He left high school during his senior year to join the Navy toward the end of World War II. He was a veteran of Naval Aviation during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

George began a lifelong love of flying by building his own airplane in ninth-grade metal shop class. He received a private pilot certificate when he turned 16 and held a commercial pilot certificate with instrument and instructor ratings when he retired.

Following college graduation, he coached high school basketball and American Legion baseball in Nebraska until he returned to graduate school to pursue his doctorate in psychology.

A proud alumnus of the University of Nebraska, he began his professional career as Associate Director of the schools Psychological Clinic. He continued his career as Chairman of Psychology at Brockport State University. He retired as a Professor of Psychology Emeritus with the Brockport State University of New York.

He was a year-round resident of Windstar on Naples Bay since 1989 when he was an active participant in the club’s golf program. He also was a member of the Senior Golfers of America, The Southwest Florida Senior Golf Association, The Florida Golf Association, and the Tournament Player’s Association.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Goodman Pinckney, his daughter, Sandra Nagle, and her children, Christine Felty (James) and Andrea Sturek (Michael). Daughter Cindy and John Sisto, and their children Anne Sisto and Tom (Sara). His son, Dr. Richard, and Jeanette Pinckney, and their children, Andersen Pinckney and Moriah (Brandon) Trundy, stepchildren Gary Snyder, Howie and Xia Snyder and their children, Elijah and Noah Snyder, Heidi Snyder Bailey, and Peter Bailey. Twelve greatgrandchildren also survive him. He will be cremated, and his ashes will be spread at sea in a private family ceremony.

•Brakenbury, Keith D., formerly of Albion, died April 12, 2024. He was born October 31, 1959 in Albion to Richard and Constance (Kwiatkowski) Brakenbury. Keith was predeceased by his mother, Constance in 2020. Keith is survived by his loving spouse, Jeffery Bodine; father, Richard Brakenbury; siblings, Kyle (Colleen) Brakenbury, Kevin Brakenbury, Ondrea Brakenbury Pate; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends. Keith enjoyed traveling to various places over the years. He spent over 25 years working for Home Depot in the Rochester area before retiring from the Henrietta store. Keith and his husband Jeff cherished time together camping, going to museums, or relaxing at home with their four cats and dogs, Parker, and Monty. Midway in life, he took on the adventure of starting his own business. With hard work and family dedication, they were able to open the doors to Gatherings at the Senators Mansion (Churchville) followed by Gatherings at the Daisy Flour Mill (Penfield). Through the growth of Gatherings, Chris was able to make many successful partnerships with places such as the George Eastman House, Casa Larga, Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester and Strong Hospital. Chris was able to make many meaningful connections and one of his many gifts was the ability to create unforgettable memories during any special event.

•Derefinko, James W., died April 11, 2024 at age 81. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carol; his children, Stephan (Brenda) Derefinko, Christine (Richard) Giangrasso; his nine grandchildren, Madison, Abigail, Lydia, James, John, Danielle (Matthew) Cole, Peter, Julia, and Luke; and his great-grandson, William. James was predeceased by his parents, Stephan and Virginia Derefinko; and his brother, Rodney Derefinko. James was a Veteran of the US Army. He retired from Brown Security of Buffalo where he worked as a service tech. He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Hilton. He was a talented carpenter and a jack-of -all-trades and enjoyed making bird houses. In his leisure he enjoyed watching and rooting for his favorite team, the Buffalo Bills, playing the drums and jazz music, and fishing on Lake Ontario.

•Klafehn, Joann Agnes, died April 11, 2024 at age 91. She was born to Joachim and Etta Miller on June 21, 1932 in Brockport and grew up in Hamlin. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Glenn; brothers, Gordon (Shelia), Kenneth (Virginia), Chester (Gertrude), and Robert Miller; sister, Joyce (Gerald) Lemcke; brothers and sisters in-law, Lorraine (Melvin) Reid, Raymond (Elaine) Klafehn, and Harold (May) Klafehn. Joann is survived by her children: Brian Klafehn (Erika Pfeiffer) of Fairport, Delores Baxter (Charles) of Greece, and Catherine Dean (Bill) of Valparaiso, IN; grandchildren Anastasia Pfeiffer, Emily (Matthew) Graupman, Erin (Ryan) Borcyk, Eileen (Nathan) Kadar, Rebecca (Nathan) Baggett and Rachel Dean; nine great-grandchildren. As a younger woman, Joann started her work life at Duffy Mott Company in Hamlin, and also worked at Chemical Bank for decades doing clerical work. Seeing his family happy and successful is what made Gerry happy. He was always there to help anyone, in any way that he could, without question.

GCC’s Forum Players present the Woods April 25 through 27 at 7 p.m. and April 28 at 2 p.m. at the Stuart Steiner Theatre. Featuring students from various majors at Genesee Community College, this production marks the return of musical theater to GCC after a multi-year hiatus. Tackling the complexities of Sondheim’s classic tale, the cast embarks on the challenging journey of bringing his emotionally rich compositions and clever lyrics to life on stage, recognizing the difficulty and ultimate reward in mastering Sondheim’s iconic music. Into the Woods follows classic fairytale characters on an adventure to fulfill their deepest wishes. The Baker and his Wife want more than anything to have a child, Cinderella desires to attend the King’s Festival, and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his Wife realize their wish cannot come true because of a Witch’s curse, they set out on a grand quest to break the spell. As their stories intertwine, they will all learn to be careful what they wish for. Even wishes don’t come without consequences.

Act 1. The second act sees the characters dealing with the consequences of their actions and coming together as a community. One of Sondheim’s most popular works, Into the Woods features exquisite music, whimsical settings, dark humor, and themes that will stay with the audience long after the curtain closes.

Exile McBride a big hit in Buffalo

The remains of Exile McBride are quietly secluded in a remote section of Brockport’s Mt. Olivet Cemetery. However, the name of my great uncle was very much alive in Buffalo on April 5. My PowerPoint Presentation entitled “Exile McBride, International Human Rights Crusader,” was a great success at the Hyatt Regency in Buffalo. It was part of the Comhaltas North American Irish Convention. There was a full house of enthusiastic attendees who were very intrigued by Exile’s amazing life story.

It was surprising to discover that Exile had once lived, and actually died in 1911, at 226 Pearl Street in Buffalo. Amazingly, this location was almost directly across the street from the Hyatt! Exile’s house has since been demolished and this is now the site of the Buffalo Convention Center. If his house was still standing, it might have been eligible to receive a New York State historic maker designation.

I also met with Susan Buttaccio, the local history manager of Buffalo’s Central Library, downtown. She had just heard about Exile for the first time and was very excited. I men-

tioned to her that I had discovered over 1,800 old newspaper articles on Exile, and over 1,000 of them were from Buffalo!

Furthermore, I told Susan that Exile’s first name alone had once been a household name in Buffalo. Exile had been somewhat like the Josh Allen of Buffalo in 1900. Local articles frequently had headlines such as “Exile meets Roosevelt,” Exile goes to Europe,” and “Exile addresses Congress.”

Susan was so excited about what I had discovered, that she will be planning a special event for Exile in September. I will also be presenting the library a framed portrait of Exile for their local history room. Exile and his incredible story were a great success during my Buffalo visit. He will no longer be lost in Buffalo history!

Riga Cemetery participating in “Caring for Your Cemetery Day”

To raise awareness of the hard work and dedication that goes into cemeteries’ care, maintenance and preservation, the New York State Department of State is launching a campaign to work with cemeteries to welcome volunteers to help prepare for the spring season and Mother’s Day visits. The first annual “Caring for Your Cemetery Day” will take place Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Through this pilot program, the Department and participating cemeteries hope to generate interest in local cemeteries, especially among younger people, recruit future volunteers or even officers and trustees/directors, and identify local people with skills that cemeteries need.

More than two dozen cemeteries will participate across the state, including these area cemeteries:

The mission of the Department’s Division of Cemeteries is to ensure that regulated cemeteries do not become a burden on their communities by continuing to operate on a not-forprofit basis. The division regulates approximately 1,700 not-for-profit cemeteries in New York State by, among other things, providing technical assistance in cemetery operations and financial accounting. The division also offers training workshops yearround to educate cemetery operators and other interested individuals on how to maintain cemeteries, keep financial records, and try to ensure long-term viability.

Volunteers needed for flag placement at Sweden cemeteries

The Town of Sweden welcomes all volunteers to help place American flags on veterans’ graves at townowned cemeteries prior to Memorial Day. Volunteers will meet on Saturday, May 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, 4988 Lake Road, Sweden. Some volunteers will be needed to place flags at other cemeteries, however the meeting point for all is at Lakeview.

AAA Great Battery Roundup

Held in conjunction with Earth Day, the AAA Great Battery Roundup is designed to encourage motorists to take old automotive or marine leadacid batteries to a local collection point where they can be safely recycled and formed into new batteries. AAA Western and Central New York is hosting the program again this year with multiple battery collection points. AAA will also donate proceeds to planting trees in Western and Central New York.

Motorists can take part in AAA Western and Central New York’s free lead-based battery recycling – any brand or type of lead-acid or AGM batteries will be accepted, including car, boat and RV batteries, however, lithium batteries are not eligible. Dropoff hours are Monday, April 22, through Wednesday, April 24, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at: Griff’s Auto Service, 55 Cedarfield Commons, Rochester; and Action Towing, 275 Marketplace, Rochester.

Students invited to enter America’s Field Trip contest

In 2026, the United States will mark its Semiquincentennial: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The organization America250 seeks to equip and inspire our youngest generations with a first-hand opportunity to learn about our nation’s most pivotal historical moments through a new contest.

America’s Field Trip is a nationwide scholastic contest that invites students in grades three through 12 to be part of America’s 250th anniversary by sharing their perspectives on what America means to them. Students may submit artwork, videos, or essays in response to the contest’s prompt: “What does America mean to you?”

Dewey will present “Understanding the Science of Substance Use Disorder.” Dr. Dewey received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the Neurology Department at Stony Brook University. During his 23-year tenure at Brookhaven National Laboratory, he conducted research on the effects of addictive drugs on the human brain. Dr. Dewey has published more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific research articles, book chapters, and abstracts.

Forum focuses on accessible recreation on the canalway

The New York State Canal Corporation recently hosted the first installment of its SUNY/Erie Canal Bicentennial Forum Series as part of New York State’s commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the original Erie Canal’s opening in 1825 and the waterway’s continued influence on the state. The April 10 forum at Monroe Community College in Brighton focused on ways local governments, businesses and recreational service providers can make the New York State Canal system and Canalway Trail more accessible and welcoming for people with and without disabilities. Coinciding with the event’s panel discussions was a vendor expo that showcased adaptive equipment and information to further assist attendees in making Canal communities more accessible.

“Since it’s opening nearly 200 years ago, the Erie Canal has had a profound impact on our state and today’s focus on accessibility and inclusion is just one example of how this industrial waterway continues to evolve as it supports an incredible network of recreational activities,” said New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton. “The Canal system and Canalway Trail provide endless opportunities for adventure, fresh air, and exercise, but there are often barriers for people with disabilities. Today’s event is working to remove those barriers by providing the information, inspiration and motivation to municipal leaders and businesses along the canal that are seeking to make their community more accessible.”

With more than 120 attendees present, the audience learned that according to Cornell University one in five Americans lives with a disability. Further, the buying power of people with disabilities along with their direct family members is $1 trillion, making the case for the substantial economic impact of accessible and inclusive recreation.

The forum was broken into two panel discussions – “Disability, Accessibility, and Inclusion,” moderated by New York State’s Chief Disability Officer, Kim Hill Ridley and the second panel, moderated by John Robinson, CEO of Our Ability, focused on “Implementing Accessible Opportunities – Assisting Canal Providers/Municipalities.” The first panel served as important

reframing disability, planning from a perspective of functional ability and the importance of universal design, as well as the role of Independent Living Centers. The second panel built on this foundation, providing specific examples of organizations focused in this space, how to incorporate inclusion in their areas and organizations, and the system view needed to make inclusion a reality.

New York State Chief Disability Officer Kimberly Hill Ridley said, “The New York State Canal system is a treasure trove of history and recreational opportunities and by making the water and trails more accessible and inclusive, we open them up to a whole new segment of the population. An accessible canalway benefits everyone, not just people with disabilities, as it creates a more vibrant and diverse community experience and leads to new partnerships and economic opportunities where everyone feels welcome.”

As part of the Canal Corporation’s continued commitment to ensuring the canal waterways and trails are accessible for all outdoor recreational enthusiasts, this season’s “On the Canals” program seeks to provide greater opportunities for accessible and inclusive outings that will allow people with and without disabilities to participate together. With more than 30,000 participants over the last four years, “On the Canals” offers a variety of free activities including kayaking, cycling, boat tours, birding, wildlife hikes, and painting. “21 Stories For Scouts” celebrates 15th year rappelling down Kodak Tower

It’s an event that has become synonymous with adventure, courage, and community spirit. “21 Stories For Scouts” proudly announces its 15th annual rappelling event down the iconic Kodak Tower in Rochester. This year’s event marks not only a milestone anniversary but also bids a fond farewell as it will be the last year participants will descend from the towering heights of the Kodak Tower.

What began as a daring challenge for thrill-seekers has transformed into a cherished tradition, raising essential funds for Seneca Waterways Council (local Scouts BSA Chapter) and promoting outdoor adventure and leadership development.

The Seneca Waterways Council partnered with Over the Edge, a company that conducts extreme rappelling events all over North America.

“We’re incredibly proud to have reached this significant milestone,” says Stephen Hoitt, Scout Executive/CEO of Seneca Waterways Council. “The experience, trepidation and excitement that a Scout feels atop a 30-foot climbing wall at summer camp is very similar to what these volunteers felt when they leaned back over the balcony, 240 feet above the ground.”

The Seneca Waterways Council extends its thanks to Kodak for the use of the building, for their incredible volunteers who helped participants cycle through the event, and for sponsoring teams of participants. Thanks also go to the following local companies who sponsored teams to rappel: Harris Beach LLC, Hoselton Auto Mall, and Taylor the Builder.

RESOLVED that the Board of Education of the Churchville-Chili Central School District is hereby authorized to establish a Capital Reserve Fund pursuant to Section 3651 of the Education Law (to be known as the “2024 School Bus and Infrastructure Capital Reserve Fund”), with the purpose of such fund being to finance the purchase of diesel and zero emission/electric school buses and vehicles and construction, reconstruction and other capital improvements in connection therewith, such capital costs being of a type that would be eligible for bond financing under the local finance law, and costs incidental thereto, the ultimate amount of such fund to be $15,000,000, plus earnings thereon, the probable term of such fund to be ten (10) years, but such fund shall continue in existence until liquidated in accordance with the Education Law or until the funds are exhausted, and the sources from which the funds shall be obtained for such Reserve are (i) amounts from budgetary appropriations from time to time, and (ii) unappropriated fund balance made available by the Board of Education from time to time, and (iii) New York State Aid received and made available by the Board of Education from time to time, all as permitted by law.

On Wednesday, April 10, members of the Ogden Town Board presented a proclamation to representatives from the Ogden Farmers’ Library in recognition of National Library Week (April 7 to 13, 2024). National Library Week is an annual celebration that highlights the valuable role libraries play in strengthening communities and providing a place for education, opportunity and lifelong learning.

“Throughout its storied history beginning in 1815, the Ogden Farmers’ Library has served as a beacon of knowledge and education in the Town of Ogden. With an array of programs, for kids, teens and adults, there is something for everyone at our local library,” said Town Supervisor Mike Zale. “I especially enjoy participating in story time with Children’s Services Librarian Steve Shon each month. I’m always so impressed with his ability to keep the kids engaged through song, dance and reading.

“Thank you to Library Director John Cohen the entire Ogden Farmers’ Library team for their unwavering commitment to education and to the residents of the Town of Ogden. I am grateful to have this valued resource here in town,” concluded Zale.

“It was such an honor to be recognized alongside members of the Library Board of Trustees during this year’s National Library Week,” said Library Director John Cohen. “At the Ogden Farmers’ Library, we work every day to offer educational, recreational and social opportunities to the citizens of Ogden in a safe, fun and inclusive environment.
