This spring marks the second year of the Village of Brockport’s Tree Board as a Celebration Forest partner. In addition to Village Arbor Day tree planting activities on Friday, April 26, local musicians will join the community to “Sing for The Trees” on Saturday, May 4, at 3 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Main Street in Brockport. Donations will be accepted with proceeds funding the planting of new trees.

An afternoon of music and story is planned. The Brockport Buskers, Dennis Bender & Company, Guitar Duo Tom and Nancy Bodziak, Sarah Silverstein and Friends, She Sings and Dusty Roads are all volunteering their time to help “green” the community and raise awareness to humans’ deep and abiding relationship to trees. Producer Douglas Green has donated significant time and talent for this event as well. Event organizers are grateful to the St. Luke’s congregation for their support of musical events in their church.

Author, educator, advocate and founder of Celebration Forest Lori Short Staubitz says, “I am so encouraged by so many who are willing to respond to the immediate and necessary task of increasing the tree canopy here in Western New York and beyond. When we think of health and

wholeness for all residents, we certainly consider health care, access to jobs and nutrition as must. However, we don’t often think of our deep dependence upon trees for the very air we breathe.

Most people imagine a forest as “out there,” but Celebration Forest is being planted right where we live, work, play and breathe. Anyone can reside in Celebration Forest by simply supporting the planting of trees. Through donations or direct planting, individuals, families, co-workers and neighbors can “live” in this Forest.

Each child that is born needs at least seven old growth trees to sustain their first breath to their last. The book Little Nut published in 2017 to help young children relate to the life of trees will also be available. Proceeds from the book and the concert go directly toward increasing the green canopy that sustains us all. Together, we are making this virtual forest a reality. The care and concern are evident and reinforce the power we all have to make good things happen.”

Ginther Elementary holds STEAM Day event On Friday, April 12, Brockport’s Ginther Elementary students had a fun-filled school day exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics in an annual STEAM Day event.

The day aims to spark an early passion for STEAM careers. “They love it,” explained Kelly Keenan, an instructional coach at the school. “It’s so different from what they’re doing in the classroom but they are such important skills that they don’t even know they’re learning which is kind of exciting.”

The hands-on activities included playing with robotics, learning about electricity, and lots of team building exercises.

Give weeds a chance

by Kristina Gabalski I recently had the chance to take part in a workshop on wild edibles led by Pat Banker, a Franklin County Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Program Educator. It was very entertaining and extremely enlightening. Pat noted that before people decided lawns should look like carpeting, most grassy areas were made up mainly of plants which could either be used as food or medicine - plants we now consider weeds. She spent much time describing the nutritional and medicinal powerhouses most of us work feverishly to get rid of - including the lowly dandelion.

Pat makes use of every part of the dandelion plant - all of which is edible. Right now in early spring, when the leaves are tiny and tender, they can be enjoyed fresh in salads. She likes to take the entire young rosette of leaves, dip them in a light batter and fry them. The long tap roots can be harvested, roasted and then ground up for use in tea. The ground roasted dandelion root she brought to the workshop smelled like chocolate and the tea tasted very much like cocoa.

Since hearing Pat speak, I’ve done some additional research on the plant - Taxaracum officinale. Dandelions are native to Eurasia and were known to ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans.

According to Anita Sanchez, author of The Teeth of the Lion - The Story of the Beloved and Despised Dandelion, the plant likely arrived on our continent on the Mayflower, brought purposefully by the pilgrims for its medicinal benefits.

Consider these interesting facts pointed out by Sanchez: dandelions are a green and growing first aid kit. Dandelion tonics have been used to help the liver remove toxins from the bloodstream; at one time were used to treat everything from warts to the plague. Modern medicine is studying the plant for its apparent ability to regulate blood sugar, reduce inflamma-

tion, aid weight loss and perhaps even reduce cancer risk.

As a food, dandelions are very nutritious, with more vitamin A than spinach, more vitamin C than tomatoes, and a great source of iron, calcium and potassium. In the past, eating dandelions helped people address common vitamin deficiencies in times when vitamin pills were unknown.

Both Pat Banker and Sanchez tout the fact that dandelions are good for your lawn. Yes, you read that correctly - dandelions are good for your lawn. Their wide-spreading roots loosen hard-packed soil, aerate the earth and help reduce erosion. The deep taproot of the dandelion moves important nutrients such as calcium up to soil levels where it is available to other plants. That’s right, dandelions act as a fertilizer to grass.

Dandelions also play a vital role, especially during early spring, as a food source for bees.

I could go on, but space is limited. Let me conclude with the fact that April 5 is designated as National Dandelion Day. If you missed it this year like I did, be sure to celebrate a little late by picking a few blooms once your lawn turns yellow like mine will; or by catching a dandelion seed and making a wish - or perhaps you could harvest the blossoms to make dandelion wine.
