Placito will take Spencerport athletic director helm in July by Warren Kozireski The Spencerport Board of Education approved the appointment of Jennifer Placito as director of health, physical education, and athletics on April 9. She will officially start her new position on July 1, following the retirement of longtime director, John Pelin. Placito has served as an assistant principal at Spencerport High School since 2017. “In a short period of time, Ms. Placito has impressed Jennifer Placito us with her leadership and abilities to connect on all levels with staff, students, and parents,” Superintendent Dan Milgate said. “I certainly want to acknowledge
John Pelin and his contributions toward building our health, physical education and athletic programs to where they are today. I also feel confident that Ms. Placito will do a great job, and I am excited to work with her in this new capacity.” Prior to joining the Ranger team, Placito worked in the Brockport Central School District as a teacher and coach. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in history with a minor in coaching from SUNY Brockport; and a Masters of Education from St. Joseph’s University. “Spencerport is an amazing community,” Placito said via email. “I feel so fortunate to be able to work alongside such amazing professionals each and every day. I am truly so excited and honored to be able to combine my greatest passions, athletics and education, as I prepare to step in to this position. Athletics has always been a huge part of my life, both as a former athlete and coach, and educationally, health and physi-
cal education provide a critical platform for students to learn the importance of lifelong wellness and fitness. I am so honored to be able to be in a position that fosters physical and intellectual growth in our classes and sports opportunities for our students.” As for future growth, Placito responded, “The position is all encompassing with health, physical education and athletics. Mr. Pelin has fostered an amazing culture in the Spencerport Athletic community. I hope to be able to collaborate and build upon our programs to create as many opportunities as possible for our students and community.” When she assumes the position in July, replacement of the artificial turf at Ranger Stadium (soccer/lacrosse) will be well underway as part of Capital Project 2018. “Mr. Pelin, without question, leaves behind an incredible legacy and very large shoes to fill. I am looking forward to carrying on the educational goals and initiatives with health and physical education, along with the pride and tradition in Spencerport Athletics. I hope to continue to create new and exciting opportunities for our students, staff and the Spencerport community.”
Linda Clifford Memorial Jamboree scheduled for Sunday, May 5 by Tami Raco Dick Clifford is preparing for the third annual Memorial Jamboree at the Brockport Elks Lodge to honor his wife Linda who passed away three years ago from throat cancer. April 29, 2016 Linda passed away, taking a piece of her husband’s heart with her. Linda was a high-spirited, loving woman who touched many lives in the local community. Linda first became ill in the fall of 2015 and was diagnosed with throat cancer. Linda underwent treatment at the Wilmot Cancer Center under the care of Dr. Matthew Miller. The staff at Wilmot treated Linda like a queen and Dick like a king. “Everyone from the receptionist, coordinator, nurses and doctors, all the way up to the chief of staff, were absolutely amazing. They made a horrible time much more bearable,” Dick said. Although the aggressive cancer took Linda’s life, Dick is passionate about keeping her legacy alive by giving back to the Wilmot Cancer Center in the hopes of helping others suffering from cancer. The couple regularly went out to enjoy music and have a good time, so after Linda’s death, Dick had the idea of holding a Jamboree in Linda’s memory. The first Memorial Jamboree took place in May 2016 and was successful in raising money for local cancer research. Dick was grateful for the community’s support and was especially appreciative of having the

opportunity to celebrate Linda’s life with those in the community. Due to the success in raising money for Wilmot Cancer Center and the opportunity to cherish Linda’s life, Dick is holding the third Memorial Jamboree on May 5. Dick attended a special reception for donors held by the Wilmot Cancer Center. He learned that the $10,000 that he donates each year from all proceeds of the jamboree is nearly quadrupled in research grants used locally at the Wilmot Cancer Center. “Even though we are little people we are making a difference,” Dick said. This year’s jamboree is billed as “The Show of All the Shows.” It is Sunday, May 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Brockport Elks Lodge, 4400 Sweden Walker Road. There will be live entertainment from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Buckle Up country music band kicks off the entertainment, followed by Boone’s Farm Band at 1 p.m. Feature performer Terry Buchwald presents his “Tribute to the King” from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. “A” Blues Band will close the evening. Happy the Clown will entertain attendees of all ages from 1 to 5 p.m. There will be food and drinks available, a Chinese raffle and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $15 for ages 12 and up; free admission for children under 12, police officers, veterans, firefighters and guards.
