“My husband, Ski, grew up as a mechanic working here at the garage. When my father-in-law retired in the late 1990s, Ski needed help and asked me to come in and manage the business.

Initially, the majority of Howard Road Garage’s business came from local auto dealerships, installing air conditioning and cruise control systems in new automobiles. In the 1960s, new cars did not come into dealerships equipped with AC and Cruise Control, they were optional features that car buyers could select at the time of purchase. Installing so many units for dealerships helped Howard Road Garage to become known, area-wide, as an air conditioning specialist.

The business slogan at Howard Road Garage is, “Doing Business The Old Fashioned Way.” Customer service is the number one priority. “Customer loyalty is huge for us. Our customers keep coming back. We also have a lot of referrals, friends of friends and family members of long time customers. We have one customer, Dan, who has been coming to us since 1964. He will stop in just for a visit and to sit around and talk,” Sharon said.

There are lots of customers who stop in, not only for car service, they come to socialize, sitting around the large table in the waiting room, sharing stories and news. “We all share in each other’s laughter and tears. I love being here. Every day I learn something from our customers,” Sharon said.

Sharon has decorated the customer waiting room with antique Ford memorabilia. “In the 1930s, this building was a Ford garage. Honor fallen warriors and contribute to the continuing needs of veterans on National poppy Day®, May 26, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brockport Walmart when members of Harsch Crisp Seaman post 379 of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary distribute bright red poppies in exchange for a donation. The Flanders Fields poppy has become an internationally known and recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. The American Legion Family called upon Congress to proclaim the Friday before Memorial Day a s National p oppy Day, which was officially designated as such in 2017.

Wearing the poppy on National poppy Day and throughout Memorial Day weekend is one small way to honor and remember our fallen warriors who willingly served our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The poppy also honors hospitalized and disabled veterans who handcraft many of the red, crepe

paper flowers. Making the poppies provides a financial and therapeutic benefit to the veterans, as well as a benefit to thousands of other veterans.

When the American Legion Family adopted the poppy as its memorial flower in the early 1920s, the blood-red icon became an enduring symbol of honor for the sacrifices of our veterans from the battlefields of France in World War I to today’s global war on terror. The American Legion Auxiliary raises about $4 million each year distributing poppies throughout the nation, with 100 percent of the funds raised going directly to help veterans, military, and their families. To learn more and to volunteer, join, or donate, visit www.ALAforVeterans.org.

All are welcome to attend the a nnual Memorial Day r emembrance Ceremony followed by a Chicken BBQ dinner on Saturday, May 27, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Brockport Area Veterans Club, 222 West Avenue, Brockport. 60 years as a family business

Howard Road Garage has serviced the auto community since 1963

In 1963, Nick Sobolew was working at Judge’s Ford on Lake Avenue, in Rochester. Sobolew’s coworker and friend at Judge’s, Pete VanDerhoeven, asked him if he wanted to invest with him in an auto repair business that he found for sale. In 1963, they went into business together and opened Howard Road Garage, located at 51 Howard Road, in Gates.

George Grace – Called to Serve

Few people are called to serve in two very contrasted ways in their lifetime. George Grace is one of them.

Grace was born in Rochester and graduated in 1964 from Sacred Heart High School. In 1966, he began his career at Kodak in the research department where he met his wife, Penny. In January 1968, George and Penny married. They were working at Kodak and saving for a home. In September 1968, Grace received a draft notice. This was during the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. “I knew I was going,” he said. At the age of twentytwo, and in optimal physical condition, he had no deferments. Classified as 1A, at the top of the list to be drafted, Grace was sent home with orders to return the following month for processing.

In December 1968, Grace said goodbye to his wife, anticipating enlistment in the U.S. Army with basic training at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. During processing, an announcement was made; four men were needed to volunteer for the Marine Corps. Grace said, “No one volunteered.” The Marines had heavy combat operations in Vietnam and the boot camp was longer and more difficult.

Since there were no volunteers, Grace was selected. “Oh boy, I am in trouble,” he said to himself. His wife believed he was going to Army basic at Ft. Dix, now he was a Marine recruit going to boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina. “This was at a time when we did not have cell phones or email, so I could not even tell Penny that my plans changed. The first ten days of our boot camp was about breaking us down physically and mentally,” he said. He finally sent a letter to his wife informing her that he was drafted into the Marine Corps, and that their first Christmas and anniversary together was not going to happen.

Upon completion of the 20 weeks of intense USMC training, young George Grace was now of a combat mindset. He arrived at the base in Da Nang, Vietnam, in May 1969. As soon as he stepped foot off the military base, he realized just how primitive the region was. Grace’s life just 20 weeks earlier was as a newlywed and Kodak employee.

While he served in Vietnam, malaria was taking the lives of servicemen living in the jungle. In December 1969, Grace became so ill from malaria that he was delirious, his fever reached a near fatal 104. He was taken on a medevac out of the jungle.

After a week of no improvements, he was sent to a military hospital in Okinawa, Japan. After five weeks of treatment in the military hospital, he was preparing to return to the jungle for the remainder of his draft duty.

He learned, due to the start of Vietnamization, they were replacing American troops with Southern Vietnam troops. Grace qualified to go back to the U.S. to finish his military obligation. Upon landing at the base in California, he was informed that Vietnam Infantry Marines were not considered “usable” in the U.S. On February 14, 1970, Marine George Grace called his wife Penny and joyously told her, “I am coming home!”

Grace soon returned to work at Kodak and began taking classes at the University of Rochester, but what he did not see coming was his second and most important call to serve was just about to unfold.

During his time at Kodak, a Christian co-worker was stopping in Grace’s office weekly to speak to him about salvation. “He would come in to see me with a Bible verse; my co-workers would tease me that he was coming for me again.” Grace’s wife was attending church, but he jokingly referred to himself as a “Chr-easter.” In August of 1972, George’s co-worker sat him down and asked if he was ready to accept Jesus into his life. As George recalls, this was a life-changing moment. He was invited to a Bible study at a church on North Greece Road. “I went right home and told Penny I was excited to see what was next.”

George and Penny immediately began attending Bible Study at First Bible Baptist Church (FBBC) in Greece. As his passion and excitement began to fan into a fire, he was eager to serve at the church. He was given the role to drive the children’s ministry bus. He began to thrive as he learned, served, and grew in the Lord. In 1973, he was called to service for the second time. Grace left his career at Kodak, his salary, and benefits, to seek full time ministry. He announced to the church leadership that he was available full time to serve.

By 1983, the Grace family had five children and they were raising their family in Greece when George Grace was appointed as the head pastor at FBBC.

Many accomplishments occurred as part of the fruit of his ministry during his decades at the church. Northstar Christian Academy went from being a small school inside the church named “God and Country,” to their own school building on Spencerport Road in Gates.

In the late 1990s, FBBC purchased land and built a new building on Manitou Road that was more than double the square footage. Another milestone during the time of Pastor Grace leading FBBC was the vision, and completion, of the area’s one and only faith-based sports park. “Our goal was to bring children and to preach the Gospel,” said Pastor Grace.

Grace and Truth Sports Park, located on North Greece Road, came to fruition in 2000, and was a ministry of FBBC as a space to provide athletic programs to impact the community by creating new and better followers of Christ. This multi-sport recreational space is used by youth and adult leagues and available to all members of the community.

In October 2016, when he retired as the head Pastor, Grace handed the reigns of FBBC to Pastor Kevin Pestke. Although retired, he is still continually active in the church, teaching classes at the Northstar Bible Institute Seminary, conducting mission trips, and traveling the country for speaking engagements. He recently celebrated 50 years in ministry. When asked if he ever thought he would go from being called for jungle warfare, to a call on his life to serve God in ministry he said, “God has a reason for everything. My military experience taught me leadership, perseverance, survival instincts, obedience, and completion.”

Pastor George Grace spends time with his family of five children, 15 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. In addition to remaining active in ministry, Grace walks over 100 miles a month. When asked what was next for him, he replied, “By the grace of God, I have no plan to fully

Wreaths Across America launches 2023 Youth Service Project

Wreaths Across America (WAA) has launched the 2023 Youth Service Project as part of its year-round TEACH program. The project will tie into the national nonprofit’s 2023 theme, “Serve and Succeed.”

The Youth Service Project encourages young people of all ages and grade levels to develop, organize and execute a community service project to improve the lives of veterans or others in their local community. By participating in, and successfully completing the Serve and Succeed project of their choosing, students will receive a certificate of community service award and commemorative bracelet from WAA. Each participant will be entered into a random drawing for the opportunity to visit the National Wreaths Across America Museum, Gold Star History and Hospitality

House and the tip land monuments where replica dog tags from thousands of service men and women are hung in remembrance. The service project needs to be completed by Veterans Day, November 11, 2023.

Throughout the year, the WAA TEACH program provides educational opportunities for people nationwide to engage with veterans in their communities. In 2022, generous supporters made it possible for WAA to launch a K-12 curriculum that is aligned with the National Council on Social Studies and state Common Core standards. The free, downloadable lesson plans ensure stories of service, sacrifice and valor are passed down to future generations while building good character and self-worth through service to others. WAA also launched its first Youth Service Project

in 2022, where students participated in an oral history project interviewing veterans. The contest winner, randomly selected from among the participants, was recently selected and will be publicly acknowledged at the organization’s annual Stem to Stone event held in Maine each summer.

“Teaching younger generations the value of freedom and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed is a core part of our mission, but we want our young people to know you do not have to be in the military to serve,” said Cindy Tatum, WAA TEACH Curricu-

lum Developer and Gold Star Mother.

“The WAA 2023 Youth Service Project encourages America’s youth to create, develop, and execute a community service project that will benefit Veterans or others in their local community or the global community. No act of service is too small, and we look forward to the impactful projects students will submit.”

St. Luke’s sparks dreams of summer in May benefit concert

Sopranos Jessica Moss and Caitlin Glastonbury to collaborate with pianist Susan Dantoni

For the first time, sopranos Jessica Moss and Caitlin Glastonbury will perform as soloists in concert together with collaborating pianist Susan Dantoni in a benefit concert on Saturday, May 27, at 7 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

Audience members will enjoy a range of styles and impressions of nature. “We hope this concert will get you excited about exploring the countryside and wild places around Brockport,” said St. Luke’s Music Director Brenda Tremblay.

Glastonbury will follow the transition from spring into summer beginning with “In The Springtime” by Betty Jackson King and descending into evening with Griffin Candey’s “The Night is Dark’ning Round Me.” Moss will begin with the vivid depiction of nature in Henri Duparc’s “Phidylé” followed by selections that wind through the simple joy of Spring. St. Luke’s Schola Cantorum chamber choir will present Renaissance madrigals and “The Peace of Wild Things,” a work by Jake Runestad inspired by the poet, activist, and American farmer Wendell Berry. Berry’s poem invites listeners to imagine spots where “the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water and the great heron feeds.”

Lyric soprano Jessica Moss has recently performed with Opera Theatre of Connecticut, Northern Lights Opera, and with the Amalfi Coast Opera Festival. She can be seen this summer in Tampa, Florida, reprising the role of Countess in

Le Nozze di Figaro with Sunny Side Opera. She holds a M.M. in Vocal Performance from Peabody Conservatory where she studied with Phyllis Bryn-Julson and a B.S. in Music Performance from Roberts Wesleyan University in Voice as a student of Constance Fee.

Soprano Caitlin Glastonbury earned a 2023 B.S. in Voice Performance from Ithaca College under the tutelage of Marc Webster. This summer they will attend music festivals in Baton Rouge, Los Angeles, and the Sarteano Chamber Choral Conducting Workshop in Italy.

Susan Dantoni is a pianist, organist, vocalist, and physician. She is on the piano faculty for the Roberts Community Music School and the organist/pianist for the Rochester Christian Reformed Church.

A donation of a non-perishable food item for the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf is appreciated. “Supporting events like this concert are yet another example of the amazing generosity by people in this community,” said Jake Straub, Board President of Brockport’s Ecumenical Food Shelf. “Food donations and proceeds from this concert will directly impact and help alleviate food security in the Brockport area.”

This concert is made possible through a grant from the Brockport Arts Fund of the Rochester Community Foundation.

NYSOFA holding public forums to present plan to support older adults and caregivers

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) is seeking public input on its proposed Four-Year Plan to the federal government during a series of public information forums across the state outlining NYSOFA’s goals and objectives to assist older residents, their families, and caregivers.

The session in Rochester is May 25 at 12:15 p.m. at Monroe Community Hospital, Auditorium A, 435 East Henrietta Road. Parking is in Lot 3, and the Main Visitor Entrance is located on the canal side. The session will be led by a presenter from NYSOFA’s leadership team and co-hosted locally by community partners.

During the session, NYSOFA will also be sharing the results of its recent Community Assessment Survey of Older Adults – the most comprehensive survey of its kind in New York State, offering responses from over 26,000 older adults. The survey assesses core age-friendly principles, including overall community quality and belonging, availability of information, productive activities, health and wellness, community design and land use, and more. These results, along with input provided at the community forums, will help inform NYSOFA’s final Four-Year Plan due to the federal government later this year.

More about the Four-year plan

As the state’s designated unit on aging, NYSOFA is responsible for developing and administering a multi-year State Plan on Aging that provides goals and objectives related to assisting older residents, their families, and caregivers. The federally required Four-Year Plan is submitted to the Administration on Community Living (ACL) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), outlining how NYSOFA and its network will address federal priorities for older adults in several focus areas:

•Long term care reform

•Continuing to address COVID-19

•Targeting and equity – supporting individuals of greatest social and economic need

•Building system capacity

•Caregiving supports

In addition to the public forums, NYSOFA encourages public input to the Four-Year Plan by writing to its dedicated mailbox at FourYearPlan@aging. ny.gov. For further details, see https://aging.ny.gov/ four-year-plan.

Regional Food Business Center being established to serve agricultural industry

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is a key partner in a new national initiative developed to help farmers and food businesses access new markets and available federal, state, and local resources, such as technical assistance and funding opportunities. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) Foundation $30 million to establish a Regional Food Business Center that serves the agricultural industry across the Northeast. Additional partners in the initiative include Buffalo Go Green and Cornell University’s Center for Regional Economic Advancement (CREA).

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said, “We’re excited to be a part of this exciting and forward-thinking initiative, along with our partners at NASDA, CREA and Buffalo Go Green. The Department is dedicated to building a more resilient food supply chain for New York’s agricultural community and its consumers, developing a number of programs over the years to bridge the gaps in the food system. The Northeast Regional Food Business Center is a tremendous step in these efforts, helping New York and its neighboring states provide targeted resources to our farmers and food businesses and increase the capacity of regional supply chains.”

Buffalo Go Green Executive Director Allison DeHonney said, “Buffalo Go Green is excited to partner with New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, CREA and NASDA Foundation in creating a Regional Food Business Center that will provide both technical and financial assistance to food and farming busi-

nesses across the Northeast. We are seeing so many technological advancements in agriculture and creative and innovative changes in food businesses; so, creating a business center that will support these advancements and prioritizes diversity equity and inclusion will only strengthen our local, state, and regional food system!”

The funding will be divided between two grant programs that will be provided to sub awardees in the areas of Technical Assistance and Capacity Building. The goal of these grant programs will be to expand agricultural production and processing, increase the amount of regionally grown products, create new products, encourage the development of food hubs, and strengthen the food supply chain. NASDA’s Regional Food Business Center will also focus on outreach and inclusion of its services to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities in the agricultural industry.

The states that are included in the Northeast service area include Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Maryland.

The Center will be established and perform outreach to stakeholders in the coming year and will announce the availability of funding and technical assistance resources as they become available.

USDA will establish 12 Regional Food Business Centers across the US that will serve all areas of the country. Regional Food Centers will target their work to historically underinvested communities in their region. In September 2022, USDA announced $400 million available to fund this initiative.

Spencerport boys lacrosse ready for postseason run

With an 11-4 record and one game remaining in their regular season, Spencerport figured to be a second or third seed in the Class B Section V boys lacrosse playoffs. One more home game for the 12 seniors on the roster.

But it’s been balanced scoring from different players and various experience levels that has been one of the keys to the Rangers success this season.

Freshman Zach Tortora leads the team in goals with 34 and is second with 42 points. Right behind is senior Cameron Mesh with 29 goals, while sophomore Jayden Rodriguez leads with 27 assists and 44 points.

Also adding to the offensive options are sophomore Trevor Lewis with 28 goals and 34 points along with senior John Choate’s 23 points.

Even with the number of upperclassmen, underclassmen are seeing plenty of minutes and opportunities.

“We’ve practiced as a team all year and we work together to be better every day,” Rodriguez said. “The guys I have around me help me a lot.”

“I think I just try to do my part on the team, and I can’t do it without the rest of the team,” Tortora said. “We’re going to keep working hard and getting our playing time. Put the work in and get results.”

Rogoyski jumps into record books and national competition

On Saturday, May 6, eleventh grade varsity track member Victoria Rogoyski long jumped an astonishing 17’ 10.25”, breaking the Byron-Bergen school record, surpassing the New York State Standard, and surpassing the New York State Super Standard. This jump automatically qualified her for the New York State Championships in Middletown, and one of three National Championship Emerging Elite Events in the country.

The Byron-Bergen long jump record was previously set by Veronica Duell, Class of 2021. She currently is long jumping at St. John Fisher College and has the second longest NCAA DIII jump in the nation with 19’ 7”.

“I have always looked up to Veronica,” said Rogoyski. “My goal is to be like her. She is amazing!”

This is not the first record Rogoyski has claimed this season. It is her fourth, including the 800m sprint medley relay with teammates Deborah Catalino, Mackenzie Hagen, and Meghan Muscarella. Despite it being early in the season, many of the team members have achieved best times, personal goals, and school records. Rogoyski also has her eye on New York State Super Standard in the pentathlon.

“I’m really proud of our athletes,” said varsity track and field head coach Ken Rogoyski. “They’re still a young team and so it’s exciting to see many of them leave their mark in the Byron-Bergen record books. We have a lot of talent on this squad and the best performances are still yet to come. Our team goal is to be the Genesee Region Champions for the third year in a row and possibly repeat as Section V Champions. We have a long post season ahead of us, and the team is looking forward to the challenges.”

“Victoria is an exceptional athlete,” said Athletic Director Rich Hannan. “This is a major accomplishment and I’m looking forward to seeing her and the team finish strong.”

In the post-season, Victoria Rogoyski will compete at either the Nike National Championships at the University of Oregon, the Adidas National Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, or the New Balance National Championships at UPenn.

“It’s (variety of scoring) definitely different from the past and definitely helps us a lot having so many different guys who can score,” Mesh said. “Teams don’t know what to do – they don’t know how to stop us because you can’t stop six different people at once.”

That was on display during their senior night game against Gates-Chili, a 14-3 victory that featured nine different goal scorers.

“We lost all three attack men from last year, so we had a lot of new kids coming in, so it was a balancing act with all the young players coming in with our seniors,” head coach Bill Buttaro said.

“It’s a great thing having older kids teaching the younger kids and then having the younger kids become the older kids; it’s just how we’ve built the program. We’re now a K-12 program and not just a high school program, and we try to develop all the way up – that’s our goal.”

Defensively, the Rangers feature three seniors on defense in Sean Baird, Sammy Bernard Scoppo and Conor Morgan in front of junior Taylor Kaye in net.

The Rangers defeated Fairport this season for the first time ever and defeated McQuaid in overtime, Brighton, and both Webster programs among their 11 wins, as the difference between east side and west side teams continues to narrow.

Now the seniors and upperclassmen help prepare the younger players for the postseason that starts Wednesday.

“Hopefully getting into Sectionals here and get going more,” Rodriguez said.

“We lost to Canandaigua last year (in the sectional quarterfinals) and we just want to use that as fuel for this year, take this as far as we can and hopefully bring back a title,”

On May 6, the Friends of Hamlin Beach State Park (FOHBSP), along with the park staff, welcomed 100 volunteers to the 12th annual I Love My Park Day (ILMPD) to do a spring cleanup of the park, getting it ready for all to enjoy. Nonprofit launches workshop series to help small business owners access capital

Venture Jobs Foundation, a local nonprofit organization and Community Development Financial Institution dedicated to supporting entrepreneurship and job creation, has announced the launch of its new Capital Access For Entrepreneurs (CAFE) Program, designed to help small businesses accelerate their growth and success and access capital.

In a recent survey (April 2023) from Goldman Sachs, nearly 80% of small business owners are concerned about their ability to access capital, leaving entrepreneurs feeling less confident in their ability to access affordable capital to grow and scale their businesses.

Venture Jobs Foundation’s mission is committed to supporting local small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Over the past six years, Venture Jobs Foundation has supported Rochester business owners and is excited to increase access to lending opportunities to the business community.

Denny DeLeo, President of Venture Jobs Foundation, shares, “As a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), we can

support local businesses with not only programs and resources but also with increased access to funding via business lending and microloans.”

The new CAFE Program offers a unique blend of networking, education, and resources, all focused on helping entrepreneurs enhance their skills in managing their business finances. Participants in the program will have the opportunity to connect with other business owners, learn from expert speakers and trainers, and receive guidance through a hands-on learning experience to support their growth and prepare them to apply for business loans.

“The CAFE Program is part of our ongoing commitment to support small business owners in Rochester,” said Kenneth Marienau, Director of Community Services for Venture Jobs Foundation. “We know that access to funding and advisors can be a gamechanger for small businesses, and we’re proud to offer a program that provides both.”

Thanks to the generous support its sponsor, the CAFE Program is free to all participants. Capital Access

Labyrinth returns to Parma Greece UCC

In celebration of Pentecost and the birth of the Christian church, Parma Greece UCC, located at 1211 Manitou Road, is hosting a Labyrinth Walk on Pentecost weekend. The community is invited to participate in this walking meditation. The Labyrinth will be open on Saturday, May 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. and again immediately following worship on Pentecost Sunday, May 28, from approximately 9:15 a.m. to noon.

A labyrinth is a patterned path, often circular in form, used as a spiritual practice; it is not a maze. A labyrinth’s walkway is arranged in such a way that the participant moves back and forth in silence across the circular form through a series of curves, ending at the labyrinth’s heart or center.

The Labyrinth will be located inside the church’s Fellowship Hall which is transformed into a Sacred Space for

this event that is free and open to the public. The Labyrinth Walk is unguided so walkers can arrive and leave at any time during the event. There will also be seating for those who prefer to meditate without walking the Labyrinth. For more information on Labyrinths, go to https://parmagreeceucc. wixsite.com/pgucc/labyrinth.

The Parma Greece United Church of Christ celebrates its 189th anniversary this year, serving its local and global neighbors. Worship services are Sunday mornings at 8:15 a.m., led by Pastor Bradley Klug. Parma Greece UCC provides a welcoming, caring community, bringing together people from multiple religious traditions and backgrounds, honoring the spiritual journey of each individual.

For more information on this event or Parma Greece UCC services, call the church office at 585-392-6120. Provided information and photo

For Entrepreneurs is open to all Rochester small business owners. Participants can expect an indepth and hands-on learning experience that covers understanding the basics of financial statements, preparing and presenting the information necessary to attract lenders or funders, and leveraging advisors and peer support to increase the success of their business.

By participating in the CAFE program, business owners will also have the opportunity to collaborate and connect with other entrepreneurs, building valuable relationships that can lead to new partnerships and opportunities.

“By supporting small businesses in Rochester, we’re not just supporting the business owner - we’re also supporting the incomes of their employees, the

spending that circulates through the community, and the creation of new jobs and opportunities,” said Marienau. “Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and they provide essential goods and services to community members. By helping these businesses succeed, we’re creating a ripple effect of prosperity that benefits everyone in the community.”

The Capital Access For Entrepreneurs program will launch on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, and run through Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Interested business owners and entrepreneurs can learn more and apply at https://vjfbusinessnetwork.org/cafeprogram/.

“Mr. Mick” named Churchville-Chili Transportation Employee of the Year

Each year, member districts of the Rochester Area Transportation Supervisors Association (RATSA) select recipients to receive the Professional Pupil Transportation Employee of the Year. Nominations are based on good attendance, safety, a friendly disposition, if the individual readily accepts and exceeds responsibilities and if they relate well with fellow workers, parents and students. This year, Michael “Mick” Berry, a driver for Churchville-Chili’s senior high, middle school and Chestnut Ridge Elementary has been selected as Transportation Employee of the Year for the district.

“I was so honored when I found out about the award,” said Berry. “I am relatively new to the district so this was really a surprise.” Earlier this year, Berry received the district’s Saint’s Spotlight recognition after being nominated by a parent for his friendly disposition and ability to put students at ease. Renee Hensel, CCCSD Director of Transportation, stated Berry is an asset to the district, and she has personally received several e-mails and phone calls from parents who appreciate “Mr. Mick” as their child’s driver.

One parent said, “My daughter is in kindergarten at CRS and rides bus 450 with Mr. Mick. I wanted to let you know how fantastic he is. He makes riding the bus fun, is caring and has made my daughter feel very comfortable in her first of school year riding the bus. He has reached out to me when she has been upset and has made her feel better. Mick truly deserves to be recognized. We hope he remains our bus driver for many years.”

Another parent commented, “Mr. Mick is an awesome bus driver. He continuously makes the kids smile during pickup and drop-off. During the holiday season, he made the bus festive and really made the

season special. Mr. Mick has a great sense of humor and not only cares about our kids but also shows an appreciation for the dogs at the bus stop, too.” While Berry was nominated by fellow co-workers for this award, his families and students continue to praise his efforts. “Mr. Mick” will be formally honored at a luncheon with other Monroe County schools in June.

Sound the call for Taps Across America

On Memorial Day, Americans remember those who have died in military service to the United States. The National Moment of Remembrance is an annual event that asks all citizens, wherever they are at 3 p.m. (local time), to pause for a duration of one minute in silent tribute to the men and women who have honorably served in uniform and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

The fourth annual Taps Across America will again honor those military members. At 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, thousands of participants will be spread

invited

out across the nation to sound the 24 notes of the most solemn bugle call – Taps.

Buglers and trumpeters, along with other instrumentalists, will sound the call from their front porch, on their apartment balcony, in the driveway, on the sidewalk, and at cemeteries and memorials to make sure this musical tribute is given to those who, as President Abraham Lincoln put it, gave the last full measure of devotion.

Musicians can register to participate at www. TapsAcrossAmerica.org.

Brockport High School announces Class of 2023 Valedictorian, Salutatorian

Brockport High School (BHS) seniors Emma Hopsicker and Aidan Mayes Poduslo have been named Class of 2023 Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively.

On Tuesday, May 16, Emma and Aidan were surprised by their parents, BHS Principal Michael Pincelli, BHS Vice Principal David Iacchetta and Superintendent Sean Bruno to announce their accomplishment.

For Emma, she’s achieving a goal she set for herself back in 2018 as she was wrapping up her seventh grade year at Oliver Middle School.

“We wrote letters about our goals to our future selves,” Emma explained. “I wrote that I would be valedictorian.”

According to Emma’s school counselor, Teri Caldwell, her persistence and drive have helped her to succeed.

“Emma stays on top of things, she was the first in her class to turn in her college applications,” Ms. Caldwell said. “Paired with her impeccable follow-through, she’s a bright star and will achieve everything she sets her mind to.”

Emma is no stranger to working hard. In addition to taking 10 Advanced Placement and four honors courses over her high school career, she’s in National Honor Society, Brockport Swimming and Diving, Mathletes, Key Club and is a three-time all-around state champion in gymnastics. Emma spent her senior year putting in 30 hours a week at the gym where she coaches and practices as a competitive gymnast.

Emma is heading to the University of Notre Dame this fall and plans to major in finance.

Similarly, Aidan says that being in the top two of his class has been something he’s been working toward since tenth grade.

“I put a lot of work into it,” Aidan said. “It took a while, but I knew it was something I wanted to achieve.”

Over his high school career, Aidan has been involved in a wide range of activities, including Student Council, National Honor Society, Environmental Club, Masterminds and Mathletes.

“Both of these students have worked incredibly hard over the past four years,” Pincelli said. “These awards are a culmination of their hard work and dedication to their studies during their time here at Brockport High School and we are all incredibly proud of them.”

This fall, Aidan plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology and explore the many opportunities available to students there to form a solid plan for his future.

“I would like to commend Emma and Aidan on their exemplary achievements,” Superintendent Bruno said. “Your hard work is paying off and we are excited to see what the future holds for each of you.”

For those hoping to follow in Aidan’s and Emma’s footsteps, their advice is to have fun, work hard, and “make the most out of every day.”

“My advice to younger students would be to accept challenges and work hard, ask for help when needed, and always show your gratitude,” Emma said.

Aidan agreed, adding that students should “make school something fun – whether it be by hanging out with friends, making strong friendships, learning about your interests, or finding a club or extracurricular activity that inspires you to make the most out of every day!”

Emma and Aidan would like to thank all the teachers and staff at BHS that have helped them achieve their goals.

Both students will address the Class of 2023 during commencement, which will take place on Saturday, June 24, at the SUNY Brockport SERC. Provided information

“I am extremely happy for Kendall Phillips and her prospects for the future,” said Byron-Bergen Athletic Director Rich Hannan. “She is a fantastic example of what a student athlete should be. She is a great softball player and an even better person. She works extremely hard for her

academic and athletic success. I know she will do great things at SUNY Brockport both in the classroom and on the softball field. We are all proud of Kendall and wish her the best of luck in the future.”

In addition to softball, Phillips is Student Council Senior Class President, a member of National Honor Society, Scholastic Bowl, Varsity Club, Yearbook Club, and is Steppin’ Up Club President.
