Every Fall Season 1 varsity Byron-Bergen affiliated sports team achieved the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar-Athlete Team award.

The Fall Season 1 sports teams are boys cross-country, girls cross-country, gymnastics, boys soccer, and girls soccer.

Due to current state guidelines, cheerleading, football, and volleyball are designated as Fall Season 2 sports and are currently scheduled for the spring.

“It has been a unique fall sports season,” said Byron-Bergen Athletic Director Rich Hannan. “These athletes could have made excuses to coast in academics or athletics, and they didn’t. They got it done. They are excellent students and role models. Congratulations to all!”

A rare Anhinga bird has been seen in Churchville Park, near the Anderson Shelter along the northern edge of Black Creek.

The anhinga, sometimes called snakebird, darter, American darter, or water turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means “devil bird” or “snake bird.” The origin of the name is apparent when swimming: only the neck appears above water so the bird looks like a snake ready to strike. They do not have external nares (nostrils) and breathe solely through their epiglottis. Photo by Karen Fien.

Wheatland-Chili varsity athletes succeed on the field and in the classroom Eight Wheatland-Chili Senior High School varsity athletes were named Genesee Region All-Stars and three fall varsity teams achieved NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete awards.

Genesee Region All-Stars are nominated by the individual head coaches then voted on by all of the coaches in the league. The Wheatland-Chili athletes named as All-Stars are cross country runners Grace Gocher and Joey Everts; boys soccer players Josh Gebhart, Aaron Lund, and Brian Napier; and girls soccer players Hannah Beldue, Emily Parker, and Niyah Rosado. Additionally, Niyah Rosado was named Genesee Region Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
