Genesee Valley Park will play host to the highest level of international cycling when the Rochester Cyclocross returns to Monroe County the weekend of September 25 and 26, 2021. The Rochester Cyclocross will be the only professional international cycling event taking place anywhere in the U.S. or Canada the weekend of September 25 and 26, meaning the event will attract the most competitive and top cyclocross racers in the world.

Rochester Cyclocross, an off-road bicycle race at the highest level of international cycling, started in 2008. The two-day event features men’s and women’s professional cycling each afternoon, amateur cycling each morning, locally-brewed beers from Rohrbach Brewing, and some of Rochester’s famous food trucks. The Rochester Cyclocross is family-friendly, and admission is free for spectators. Full Moon Vista Bike & Sport (the same company that produces the Rochester Twilight Criterium) and Monroe County are

hosting the only UCI (Union Cycliste International) Class 1 Cyclocross event in New York State, one of only four in North and South America in 2021.

Rochester Cyclocross will feature some of the world’s top male and female cyclocross racers. This event takes all the excitement and action of the Criterium, off-road.

Professional athletes are expected from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Switzerland, and the USA. Cyclocross is a hybrid between road cycling and mountain biking. Riders race around an off-road circuit on bicycles that look very similar to road bikes but have been built to take on the demands of rougher off-road racing. Circuits are typically one-and-a-half to two miles long and feature obstacles that may force the rider to dismount their bicycle. Multiple laps showcase these elite riders’ skills and speed.

New for 2021, the Rochester Cyclocross has become part of a UCI four-race international series called the USCX Cyclocross Series. These four events, held in Rochester, Baltimore, Iowa City, and Cincinnati, have partnered with GCN (Global Cycling Network), and each will be live-streamed to a global audience.

Admission to the event is free for spectators. Children’s activities include a mini race course that will be used continuously on both days. Two professional race announcers will provide commentary with the backdrop of music each day. Limited free parking is available within the park, and paid parking is available in the University of Rochester west lots off Kendrick Road.

CNB in Top 20 Mid-Tier Banks as reported by American Banker Canandaigua National Bank & Trust (CNB) was recognized as one of the top 10 percent of mid-tier banks ($2 Billion to $10 Billion) by American Banker in terms of financial performance for 2020, in the midst of the pandemic.

American Banker, a daily trade newspaper and website covering the financial services industry, places CNB as number 20 out of 284 qualifying institutions in the United States. It was noted that while expecting pandemic-induced loan losses, top-performing mid-tier banks still managed to garner strong profits, mainly by embracing the Paycheck Protection Program’s (PPP) government-backed emergency small businesses loans.

Unlike some banks, CNB accepted PPP applications from customers and noncustomers alike. Additionally, CNB continued to work with the Small Business Administration and local businesses to obtain PPP funding after many of those

GCC’s Adult Education Opportunity Center awarded $2.2 million grant The U.S. Department of Education announced that Genesee Community College will receive a federal TRIO Educational Opportunities Center (EOC) grant totaling $2.2 million to help unemployed workers, low-wage workers, and returning high school and college students enter or continue a program of postsecondary education.

The grant comes in the form of a five-year cycle providing $430,441 each year to the TRIO Adult Educational Opportunity Center (AEOC) at GCC. This grant will help support programming and outreach efforts from the 20212022 through the 2025-2026 academic years.

The AEOC provides information on college admissions as well as guidance and services to improve participants’ financial and economic literacy. Among comprehensive services are academic and personal counseling, career workshops, information on postsecondary education opportunities, student financial aid and literacy assistance, and help in completing applications for college admissions.

TRIO EOC programs offer services to a broad range of adult learners, including those who are limited English proficient, those who are from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, individuals with disabilities, homeless individuals, youth aging out of the foster care system, formerly incarcerated individuals, and other disconnected students.

The national Educational Opportunity Center program began in 1972 and is part of a set of federal educational

opportunity outreach programs known as “TRIO,” which is authorized by the Higher Education Act to help lowincome, first-generation students and students with disabilities succeed in higher education. In FY20 there were 139 Educational Opportunity Centers in America serving more than 192,000 adult learners nationwide.

“Genesee Community College is extremely grateful for the opportunities this grant funding provides for our students and our community members. Our team of expertly trained AEOC team members work hard to maximize the impact our programs and services have for as many individuals as we can reach,” said Dr. Shelitha Williams, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services. “It is exciting to see that this work can not only continue, but will now reach even more people in their time of need.”

“As systemic inequality and financial hardship discourage students from succeeding in college, TRIO programs like EOC take on new importance because they continue to help guide un- and underemployed workers and returning high school and college students towards earning a degree,” said Maureen Hoyler, president of the non-profit Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) in Washington, D.C. COE is dedicated to furthering the expansion of college opportunities for low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities nationwide.

The voters selected Mu when she made history for her dominant performance at the summer Tokyo Olympics. She won a gold medal in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 1:55:21, breaking an American record set

by Agee Wilson in 2017. The USA women had not won the 800 meter in 53 years in the Olympic Games.

Croquet tournament hotly contested With soaring temperatures, the weather added its own heat to the hotly contested games of the recent American Rules Doubles Tournament hosted by the Rochester Croquet Club.

Twelve players were divided into six teams for a high-low format featuring three one-hour games in block play before seeding to the semi-finals. In the American Rules game, when a player hits their ball into another ball (roquet), they get two additional shots - the croquet and the continuation. In the croquet shot, the striker ball takes their ball in hand and places it next to where the object ball stopped. The two balls must touch, and the object ball must visibly move on the croquet shot. The player then has one more shot, the continuation, to

score a wicket or shoot their ball to another spot. By successfully hitting other balls and scoring wickets, a player can run a “break” and score multiple wickets in one turn.

With players from Lewiston joining local players, the competition was keen, with many games being won or lost by only one point and often in last turn. Winners will receive gift card prizes at the club’s annual fall awards dinner.

The teams that ended up in the top three places were: first - Rich Laging and Joel MacDonald; second - Peter Sherer and Joanne O’Keefe; third - Linda Bowers and Kathy Gamlen.
