The first is Rick Holden (at right), in appreciation of his commitment to the community. “We are grateful for your dedication to the residents of the Village of Hilton. Thank you for being such a large part of the Little Village with the Big Heart,” said Mayor Joe Lee. The Hilton Parma Food Shelf Volunteers (below) were also recognized. “Your efforts and caring for our neighbors in need does not go unnoticed. The Board of Trustees is extremely proud to have each of you in our community,” Lee said. Provided information and photos

Monroe County Sheriff testifies before Congressional subcommittee Congressman Joe Morelle, Chairman of the Rules Committee’s Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process, hosted a June 15 subcommittee hearing on “Tools to Combat Gun Trafficking and Reduce Gun Violence in Our Communities.” The hearing focused on exploring actions that Congress can take to better combat gun trafficking and ensure that illegal guns do not make their way onto the streets of our communities, where they are too often used in violent crime. “Our nation is perpetually grieving the loss of innocent lives to mass shootings and neighborhood violence, which have become all too common in our communities. I hosted this hearing because enough is enough: it’s time to act and take long overdue action to keep our families safe,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “Our thoughtful discussion and expert testimony outlined comprehensive actions we can take to address gun trafficking, strengthen regulations on gun shops, and better protect our streets

from the devastation of gun violence. I look forward to working with my colleagues to adopt these measures and continue building on our efforts to keep guns out of the hands of those who intend to do harm.” Monroe County Sheriff Todd K. Baxter was among the witnesses called to testify at the hearing. He offered input to the subcommittee regarding gaps in current laws that hinder the ability of law enforcement to take crucial actions to reduce the number of guns entering the illegal market and maintain public safety. He also asked for strengthened accountability for those responsible for the theft and commerce of illegal firearms. A press release from Baxter’s office stated: “We recognize that in our community, almost all gun shop owners are responsible and take necessary steps to secure and keep track of his inventory. Unfortunately, several years ago this community experienced an outlier who recklessly allowed hundreds of guns to be stolen from their inventory.

Shortly after this event, Sheriff Baxter initiated conversation about how our laws lack the tools to protect the community from this outlier.” “In my 35 years in law enforcement, I have seen first-hand the consequences of the use of illegal and stolen guns on victims, their families and the community at large,” said Sheriff Baxter during his testimony. “I am committed to taking any legal action I can to reduce the number of illegal and stolen guns on our streets by suggesting federal support for responsible commercial firearms management, positive gun ownership, and incentivizing responsible gun ownership and management, as opposed to criminalizing individual gun owners and dealers.” The committee discussed the importance of ensuring that Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) has the necessary tools to track and police gun trafficking as well as critical funding streams for gun violence prevention research. The committee also covered elements of H.R. 4423, the Gun

Theft Prevention Act, authored by Congressman Morelle. Specifically, the Gun Theft Prevention Act would: •Require employees that have access to firearms to pass the same background check as a gun buyer. •Allow ATF to require gun shop owners to keep an inventory of the firearms in their stock and conduct an annual inventory reconciliation to see if any guns are missing. •Create strong enforcement mechanisms, including license suspension or revocation, for dealers that repeatedly fail to meet minimum security requirements. •Authorize an additional 650 ATF personnel dedicated to conducting dealer inspections and enforcement. •Require individual gun owners to report lost and stolen firearms to local police and the ATF. integrity, Honesty, Commitment Churchville resident earns Outstanding Student Award from SUNY Oswego Recent SUNY Oswego graduate Helena Buttons, of Churchville, was selected to receive one of two Oswego Alumni Association 2022 Outstanding Senior Awards. They received their award during the annual Commencement Eve Torchlight Dinner on Friday, May 13. Buttons graduated with a dual degree in communication/social interaction and English, with a business administration minor. During their time at Oswego, Buttons led the on-campus food pantry, SHOP (Students Helping Oz Peers). They were able to triple SHOP’s usage records, host over 100 student volunteers per semester, and complete two to three events, drives and collaborations per month. Buttons also completed five internships during their time as a student, one within the Office of Communications and Marketing; one within the Office of Career Services; one based around sex education; one with SHOP; and one with SUNY Oswego Chief of Staff Kristi Eck. They served as the vice president for Lambda Pi Eta, the communications honor society, and they played a key role in the continued development of the on-campus Queer and Trans Outreach Center, in addition to being a leader in numerous other clubs and activities. Buttons was recently honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. After graduation, they will continue in not-for-profit work, working at the Center for Youth in Rochester in special events and fundraising. Although Buttons does have a job lined up to answer the expected question about their future, they also have their own more meaningful response. “I think I have finally found what I want to do for my career ... anything,” Buttons

Helena Buttons earned an Oswego Alumni Association 2022 Outstanding Senior Award. said. “It turns out that as long as I can teach and be taught, can support my people while knowing they support me, and can see the big picture of leaving the world a better place than when I found it, I will be so filled with love that I won’t be able to keep it in. “It isn’t about what I am doing or where I am doing it,” Buttons said. “It’s about who I am working with and how it impacts the world. I want to work with people who may be imperfect but who are kind, passionate and strive to make the small changes that make larger equity possible. I cannot wait to take my passion for education, creative problem-solving and leadership, and funnel that into activism ... We cannot shine on our own, and I am so honored to be a product of the very, VERY extended family who raised me.” Provided information and photo

I Make Your Goals MY Goals When I help prospective buyers locate a new home in the Greater Rochester area I listen carefully to your goals. What are your criteria for selecting a neighborhood, what style of house do you prefer, what price range and floor plan meet your needs? Are there any special considerations that will go into making your decision? When I have a good picture of what you want, I will go to work to find the best property on the market for your needs. I succeed when I can make my buyers' goals my goals. Finding you the perfect home is a collaborative effort. The buyers communicate what they want, why they want it, and where the compromise might be possible, and I listen carefully and select only homes that could meet the buyers' criteria. When there is trust and communication between you and the Realtor you are working with, miracles can happen! Creating these miracles for buyers and sellers is "Job #1" for me.

Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association thanks the community After a three year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association carnival made its long awaited return last week and we couldn’t have asked for a more hearty show of support! We were fortunate to have had four days of excellent weather, save for a short period of rain on parade night. The excitement felt by all of us marching through town can’t be measured! The cheers and encouraging words heard loud and clear on Lyell Avenue and as we turned onto Union Street had us all smiling and proud to be a member of your Spencerport Volunteer Fire Department. Record crowds hit the midway and the entertainment tent this year, helping make one of our largest fund raising efforts a great success. And we don’t take your generosity for granted. The funds raised will be used to maintain our association and our volunteer firefighters so that we’re always well prepared to serve our community. We’d also like to say thank you on behalf of our much appreciated Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, who this year celebrated their 75th anniversary! Your support of their booth was again, amazing! We can’t imagine our organization without our dedicated Ladies Auxiliary. They not only support the Firemen’s Association, they contribute a great deal to our community as well. Happy anniversary, ladies, we appreciate you! We realize that along with the fun and excitement of the carnival are issues with parking, increased traffic and added noise. We very much appreciate your kind understanding during the four days of the event as well as during set up and tear down. Just as we’re always here for you in your time of need, we appreciate you being there for us, always! From every member of the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association and Ladies Auxiliary, thank you for welcoming back the carnival with your tremendous show of support. We so very much appreciate you! Stephen P. Cusenz, Secretary Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association

Martha Matilda Harper documentary to premiere in Rochester Rochester business genius’ buried story comes to the screen After nearly 135 years, Martha Matilda Harper, creator of modern franchising and inventor of the reclining shampoo chair, returns home in a newly released documentary The Marvelous Martha, which will premiere on June 21 at 7 p.m. at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, where Harper’s retrieved artifacts are preserved. Tickets are $5 and are available at www. rmsc.org/marvelousmartha. The documentary brings to life Harper’s struggle as an endured servant girl of seven, her life as a servant for 25 years, and then her critical decision to immigrate to Rochester to change that fate. Using historic photos, recreation of the voices of Harper, her family, her dedicated Harperites, and Harper’s contemporaries, including suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony, attorney John Van Voorhis, Black millionaire Madame C. J Walker, dedicated Harper franchise owners, and socialite Bertha Palmer who insisted Harper expand her business, the viewer intimately relates to Harper’s determination, principles, supporters, and dreams. At the event, Jane Plitt, Harper’s biographer who spent six years crisscrossing the U. S. and Canada piecing together Harper’s buried story, will answer questions and sign books. Plitt’s books about Harper include

Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band to perform free summer concerts the biography Martha Matilda Harper and the American Dream, the young adult book Martha the Hairpreneur (co-authored with Sally Valentine), and the young child book Martha’s Magical Hair. Says Plitt, “In these troubled times, Harper offers all of us, young and old, immigrant and citizen, inspiration to dare to pursue your dream and believe you can do good for yourself and others. NYS Canalway Water Trail added to National Recreation Trails System In celebration of Great Outdoors Month, The New York State Canal System, including the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca canals, is getting special recognition from the U.S. Department of the Interior as one of the nation’s newly designated National Water Trails. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland recently announced nine new trails in seven states, adding nearly 600 miles to the National Trails System, with the New York State Canalway Water Trail the latest and largest addition. “The National Trails System, which includes national scenic, historic and recreation trails, offers an abundance of opportunities to experience the breathtaking landscapes of our country, all while supporting outdoor recreation activities and boosting local economies,” said Secretary Haaland. “These new trails will help expand community connections to green spaces where children can play, families can connect, and a love and appreciation for the outdoors can be nurtured.” New York State Canalway Water Trail is comprised of over 450 miles of land cut canals, and interconnected lakes and rivers with more than 150 public access points for paddlers. The water trail follows the New York State Canal System across the full expanse of upstate New York, offering visitors a wealth of places to visit and sights to see. “The New York State Canalway Water Trail is a national treasure that provides a unique paddling experience. This honor brings significant recognition to the work that has been accomplished to make the NYS Canal System a welcome and safe

destination for paddlers – from signage to launch sites to amenities and visitor information,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. The newly designated trails join a network of more than 1,300 existing national recreation trails, which can be found in every U.S. state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “With its abundant access points across upstate New York and endless opportunities for recreation and adventure nestled alongside exceptional landscapes – the Canalway Water Trail represents some of the very best the Empire State has to offer. This designation further cements the Canal System’s legacy on a national stage.” State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “New York State’s trail network is unparalleled. This new designation recognizes the New York State Canal System as one of New York’s greatest recreational resources and will encourage both local residents and visitors to get out and explore the state’s extraordinary experiences, people, and places along our scenic and historic waterways.” The NYS Water Trail is managed by the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the NYS Canal Corporation. The National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program provided technical assistance for the initial trail vision and subsequent development. Paddlers explore the Erie Canal at the site of the historic Richmond Aqueduct in Montezuma.

The Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band, under the direction of Dr. Charles P. Schmidt, will begin its 37th season with a concert on Wednesday, June 22, at Hilton Baptist Church, 50 Lake Avenue, Hilton. The Gazebo Band will perform free summer concerts on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on the following dates: June 22, June 29, July 6, and July 13. All concerts will be held at Hilton Baptist Church. The band plays a wide variety of concert band literature, including traditional marches, light classics, music of Broadway and Hollywood, popular music, and patriotic music. This year the band will play works by Henry Mancini, Lerner and Loewe, Elmer Bernstein, Jule Styne, Charles Carter, Frank Erickson, Pierre LaPlante, Hoagy Carmichael, and Irving Berlin, among others.

The Gazebo Band was founded in 1984 and was first directed by Hilton music educator, Gordon Bascom. The original group of approximately a dozen players performed for the Village of Hilton Centennial celebration and a larger group performed for the dedication of Centennial Park. The current conductor, Dr. Charles Schmidt, is in his fourteenth year of conducting the band. Mary Reazor, the last remaining charter member of the band, serves as the band’s manager, librarian, and lead trombonist. The Gazebo Band is an all-volunteer organization that relies on donations from the community and individuals. The band is comprised of dedicated musicians from across Monroe and Orleans counties. From its beginning, the band’s purpose has been to give area adult musicians a place to enjoy their musical gifts and to share them with the community. Provided information and photo

Homesteads for Hope receives $5,000 to expand community garden On June 15, Tops Markets presented Homesteads for Hope with $5,000 to help expand the programming for their Community Farm. Homesteads won the funding through a contest put together by Tops and Herban Fresh Farm Fund. The contest was open to non-profit groups and schools with one winner being awarded $5,000 for the purpose of building or enhancing a local community garden in the areas Tops operates. The positive impacts of community gardens include building stronger neighborhoods, increasing access to healthy foods, and improving air quality. Homesteads for Hope is 501c3 nonprofit inclusive Community Farm for individuals with and without disabilities to learn, work, live, and grow in nature’s classroom. Their 55-acre farm is located on Manitou Road in Ogden, directly on the wide waters of the Erie Canal. Their classroom is in the great outdoors

which provides a peaceful and therapeutic environment for anyone who sets foot on it no matter their ability level. The funds will allow the Homesteads for Hope Community Garden to grow impact by helping them: •Build more boxes to expand and create a “U-Pick” experience •Create handicap accommodations (three feet of height to some boxes) •Design/build vertical garden components (tomato cages and trellis walk-thrus) •Provide every garden plot a “mailbox” so families can write their name on it and store their gloves and personal garden tools. Training documents could also be placed in the mailboxes so they have their education for the week without having to print or lose those documents. To learn more about Homesteads for Hope, visit homesteadsforhope.org. Provided information

Free web-based support platform being provided for family caregivers in NY The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) and Association on Aging in New York (AgingNY) have partnered with Trualta to offer Trualta’s web-based caregiver education and support platform at no cost to any unpaid caregiver in New York State. Funding for this initiative is supported in the Fiscal Year 2023 state budget through NYSOFA programs to address social isolation and expand caregiver supports. Trualta’s evidence-based caregiver training and support platform helps families build skills to manage care at home for loved ones of any age. It also connects to local resources and support services by delivering personalized education, training, and information links. New Yorkers can access the service at https://newyorkcaregivers.com. Once registered, caregivers can select personalized training and track their progress on topics like self-care, stroke recovery, dementia care, medication management, and more. Users can log-in from any computer, tablet, or smartphone. There are an estimated 4.1 million caregivers in New York State who provide 2.68 billion hours of unpaid care. Sixty-one percent worry about caring for a loved one and 70 percent reported at least one mental health symptom during the pandemic. Trualta teaches critical skills to

reduce caregiver stress levels and increase confidence in one’s caregiving abilities. A 2021 study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease Reports found a high rate of retention and engagement among caregivers who used the Trualta platform to support their care for loved ones with dementia: 84 percent of participants reported using at least one skill they learned from Trualta. More than half of the caregivers (56 percent)

reported allocating more time for self-care after using Trualta. Caregiver burden scores also appeared to decrease after using Trualta for 30 days. NYSOFA Director Greg Olsen said, “Family, friends and neighbors provide a range of unpaid supports for loved ones at home, including often complex or intensive tasks for family members who have chronic conditions like dementia or diabetes. This labor of love can be all-consuming, but you are not alone. Our partnership with Trualta offers an evidence-based support platform statewide, empowering unpaid caregivers with the knowledge and skills training necessary to reduce anxiety and stress while improving outcomes in the care of loved ones. Equally important is the connection it provides to local programs and services for help if needed.” He added, “NYSOFA, our county office for aging partners, and their networks deliver many community-based services to help individuals age in place, including support groups, respite, social adult day programs, and more. On-demand platforms like Trualta help extend our reach, bringing vital information and guidance into the homes of more New Yorkers so that nobody faces the struggle of caregiving alone.” Provided information

Opinion Be sure to vote How often we complain about the government, what it does or does not do for us! Yet our abysmally low participation in elections reveals a high degree of apathy when it comes to voting to make sure that same government represents our own values and priorities! We are coming up to the first of two primaries this summer, on Tuesday, June 28, at which time we have the opportunity to participate in selecting each of our party’s candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor in the General election November 8. As Sheldon Meyers wisely commented in his letter to the editor last week (Westside News West Edition, June 12), “the most effective and important way [to express your political point of view] is by voting.” In fact, it is often these primaries that skew our elections to the more radical candidates, instead of representing the majority of us, precisely because so few of us seem to care – until it’s too late! Polling places are open all day, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., in addition to early voting June 18 through 26. Don’t take this privilege of democracy for granted. Get out and vote in every election. It’s the best way to have your voice be heard at the local, state, and national level. Martha D. Clasquin Brockport

The Heart Walk & Run drew a crowd of around 1,000 walkers and runners at Genesee Valley Park. For the first time, participants could start their walk at any time throughout the evening. Additional activities included healthy demonstrations, activities for kids, health screenings, celebrations of heart disease and stroke survivors, and entertainment. Participants helped raise more than $350,000 so far at the Rochester Heart Walk & Run. Efforts are not done as walkers can turn in donations until June 30 at www. RochesterHeartWalk.org. “By supporting and participating in the Rochester Heart Walk & Run, this community is helping to ensure that more cardiovascular research is funded, more hospitals administer the highest standards of care, and that fewer people suffer and die from heart disease and stroke,” said Kelly Quinn, Heart Walk & Run Chairwoman and client manager at Unum. “With every step you take and every dollar you raise, you are building a legacy that will save and improve lives.” The funds raised from the Rochester Heart Walk & Run go towards research, advocacy, CPR training and to promote better health in support of the Association’s 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal, reducing barriers to health care access and quality. I absolutely am so pleased with the service and how knowledgeable each tech was. I had this done in February. Today I had my AC unit serviced. He replaced a bad part and I was very pleased with his work. I would recommend this company to all friends and family” -Cindy G.

Justin Thomas, one of the most popular professional golfers on the PGA Tour, has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for May 2022. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). Thomas was selected based on his win at the 2022 PGA Tour Championship, the second major of his career. At the start of the final round, the 29-year-old came from a seven strokes deficit, defeating Will Zalatoris. This feat tied the largest final round comeback in the history of the PGA Championship. In the final round, Thomas capped off a dramatic ending to the tournament against leader Mito Pereira and claiming the Wanamaker Trophy for the second time. Other finalists for May in order of how the NSMA voters ranked them were: Rich

Strike (Sonny Leon – jockey) (horse racing), Jayson Tatum (basketball), Connor McDavid (hockey), Giannis Antetokounmpo (basketball), Paul Goldschmidt (baseball), Andrei Vasilevskiy (hockey), Dimitri Bivol (boxing), and Minjee Lee (golf). Thomas’s selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for May 2022 not only recognizes him as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month, it also makes him the third candidate eligible to receive the overall award for 2022, joining Scottie Scheffler, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Cooper Kupp plus other finalists selected throughout the year based on NSMA voting.
