Members of the Churchville Lions Club will be braving the elements to man the grill again this year for their annual January Winterfest Chicken Barbecue at Churchville Elementary School, 36 West Buffalo Road, Churchville, on Sunday, January 26, from noon until 2 p.m. or until sold out.

Dinners are $10 each. Tables will be set up for dining inside the school with a clown providing entertainment. Take outs also available. Proceeds from this fundraiser allow the Lions Club to support community projects. Photos by Dyan Monte Verde.

•Caitlin Costner of Rochester (14606) has been awarded a $15,760 “Presidential Scholarship.” Costner is slated to graduate in 2020 from Spencerport High School and has been accepted into the undeclared major program.

•Cassidy Faker of Churchville has been awarded a $10,140 “All-American Scholarship.” Faker is slated to graduate in 2020 from Churchville-Chili Senior High School and has been accepted into the radiologic technology (AAS) program.

•Austin Beckingham of Rochester (14624) has been awarded a $4,000 “Academic Distinction Scholarship.”

Beckingham is slated to graduate in 2020 from Churchville-Chili Senior High School and has been accepted into the electrical engineering technology (BS) program.

Lindsay Allen of Brockport, was named to the fall 2019 dean’s list at the University of Vermont. She is a molecular genetics major in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Cassandra DiLucia of Hamlin was named to the fall 2019 president’s list at Bob Jones University, Greenville, South Carolina. She is a junior piano pedagogy major.

Tessa G. Beaulieu of Brockport, was named to the fall 2019 dean’s list at Alfred University (AU). She is a senior in the Inamori School of Engineering.

Coffey, a graduate of Spencerport High School majoring in theatre stage management, served as assistant stage manager in the co-production between the BW Conservatory of Music’s music theatre program and the department of theatre and dance.

Sean Mickey of Brockport, has been named to the fall 2019 dean’s list at St. Bonaventure University. He is a junior journalism major.

Sean is the son of Tina and Gary Mickey.

Joshua Mantegna of North Chili, was named to the fall 2019 dean’s list at SUNY Potsdam. He is a music education major.

Joe’s stories old, new, mostly true

Silos Series #4

by Joe Reinschmidt As readers may recall, when I first wrote something about farm silos I noted that in our area they were originally mostly built of wood. As time passed, that gave way to other materials, which would last longer, and wooden silos were hardly seen anymore.

Well, little did I realize until sometime last year (2019) there was one I had traveled past since childhood, probably thousands of times over the years. It is located on property at 2015 Spencerport Road in Gates.

Growing up we knew that place as part of the Ostrom farm, which it was. However, for about three decades now it has been owned by Joe Freitas who lives there, in the farmhouse adjacent to the barn and silo.

While speaking to him I learned that the silo is several feet shorter than it was originally – no wonder I hadn’t thought if it earlier.

Some years ago, Joe noticed that the lower sections of the wooden staves were rotting and could eventually cause the collapse of the structure. So he devised a plan to correct that. The idea was to build up some cribbing to hold the silo up enough to cut off the rotted section, and then lower the remaining structure down onto the concrete foundation. When he told others about it, some had their doubts that he would succeed. That probably made him determined to go ahead with it.

Freitas did go ahead with the plan and was successful as the recent photograph verifies.
