I wish her the very best at Roberts Wesleyan.” Hagen is a six-year varsity soccer player and a member of three consecutive Section V championship teams. She participates in varsity track and field where she is a member of the record-holding 800m Sprint Medley Relay team. She is also a Scholar Athlete and Genesee Region All-Star. Simone Biles and Adolis Garcia have been selected as the Hickok Belt® Award winners for October 2023. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). Professional gymnast Simone Biles once again rose to the top of the gymnastic world by winning the all-around gold medal and the gold medal for the floor exercises. By winning the sixth gold medal on the floor, Biles became the first gymnast in the history of world championships to win that many titles on one apparatus. In addition, she is the first to win six all-around gold medals. Texas Ranger outfielder Adolis Garcia, in a post season performance, led the Rangers to the World Series. In a spate of league changing torrid home runs, Garcia sparked his team to a World Series versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. His grand slam was the key to the Rangers winning in the ninth inning of Game 6. In Game 7, he put the icing on
the cake with his two homers and five runs, propelling the Rangers into the World Series. Garcia was named the ALCS Most Valuable Player. Other finalists for the month of October in order of how the NSMA ranked them included: Zack Wheeler (baseball), A.J. Brown (football), Max Verstappen (auto racing), Luka Doncic (basketball), Josh Allen (football), Jonathan Quick (hockey), Collin Morikawa (golf) and Iga Swiatek (tennis). Brockport Kiwanis Club supports Oak Orchard’s Mommy and Me Program The Kiwanis Club of Brockport donated $1,500 to Oak Orchard Health’s Mommy and Me program. This program supports new moms and caregivers experiencing postpartum depression and anxiety. This donation will help support vital resources for the families involved in this program, including items in a newborn welcome kit, home safety items (cabinet locks, Carbon Monoxide and smoke detectors), and supplies for the caregiver support group that is facilitated by OOH care managers. Ogden recognizes two longtime employees upon their retirements On Wednesday, November 8, the Ogden Town Board recognized two longtime employees of the Town of Ogden upon their respective retirements. Dave Fairley is a 40-year veteran of the town and John Eeckhout has served the community for over 35 years. Dave began as a Volunteer Fire Inspector in 1983 and went on to become the town’s Assistant Fire Marshal, which involved conducting fire inspections and assisting with other essential departmental duties. John Eeckhout’s career in public service began in 1987 when he became Ogden’s part-time Dog Warden and in 2003, he became the full-time Animal Control Officer. He has played a critical role in en-
suring the control and protection of common domestic nuisance wildlife in the town. “For decades, John and Dave have been a valuable resource to residents and town staff alike. They have always conducted themselves in a professional manner with integrity and a genuine kindness toward the community,” said Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale. “I will miss the knowledge and professionalism these men have brought to town hall each day, but I am excited for them to enjoy retirement with their friends and family. Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band to present Christmas concerts The Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band, under the direction of Dr. Charles P. Schmidt, will perform free community Christmas concerts in Hilton and Greece. The first concert will be at Hilton Baptist Church, 50 Lake Avenue, Hilton, on Friday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m. The second concert will be performed at Orchard Community Church, 2285 Latta Road, on Friday, December 8, at 7:30 p.m. Donations of non-perishable food items to benefit the Hilton and Greece Community Food Shelves, respectively, may be made at the door. This year’s concert continues the tradition of free community Christmas concerts by the Gazebo Band at area churches, which began in 2013. This year’s Christmas concerts will feature a program of standard concert band literature and traditional holiday music. The band will play works by Leroy Anderson, Irving Berlin, Robert Sheldon, Henry Fillmore, Chris Sharp, John Edmundson, and George Gershwin.

The Hilton-Parma Gazebo band will perform in Hilton on December 1 and in Greece on December 8. The Gazebo Band is an all-volunteer organization and is comprised of dedicated musicians from across Monroe, Wayne and Orleans Counties. From its beginning, the band’s purpose has been to give area adult musicians a place to enjoy their musical gifts and share them with the community.
The Gazebo Band was founded in 1984 and was first directed by Hilton Music Educator, Gordon Bascom. The current conductor, Dr. Charles Schmidt, is in his fifteenth year of conducting the band. Mary Reazor, the last remaining charter member of the band, serves as the band’s manager, librarian, and lead trombonist. Provided information and photo
C-C sophomore selected for Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra Taylor Stocks, a sophomore at Churchville-Chili Senior High School, has been chosen for the 2023-24 Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra (HYSO) at The Hochstein School. Students work hard to earn a place in the orchestra, which performs professional repertoire in multiple concerts throughout the school year. “I really enjoy my time in Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra,” says Taylor. “It gives me an opportunity to challenge myself, and acquire new skills. County Nutrition Program classes are available to all residents Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (CCE Monroe) piloted a new program in 2022 called the County Nutrition Program. It was designed to expand access to resources for residents of Monroe County. If you or the organization you work for have been looking for ways to provide your community with nutrition education and resources, see the programs below for opportunities. Programs for adults use evidencebased curriculum that targets behaviors shown to reduce unhealthy weight gain and chronic disease. The County Nutrition Program offers a wide array of topics, mainly focusing on increasing consumption of nutrient dense foods, stretching your food dollar, and increasing physical activity. Children’s programs include interactive nutrition activities, food preparation, active games to keep kids engaged and have fun while they are learning. Topics include replacing sweetened drinks with low-fat milk and water, eating more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, eating fewer

high-fat and high-sugar foods, and playing actively 60 minutes a day. Programs for seniors cover the unique needs of people age 65 and over. The County Nutrition Program frequently offers classes for seniors at town recreation centers, senior centers, and libraries. Topics focus on important subjects like eating healthy on a budget, how nutrition affects bones and joints, heart health, and the importance of physical activity. A lot of families find it difficult to focus on nutrition when they have a busy household or picky eaters at home. Nutrition topics for families offer advice on getting kids involved in the kitchen, planning your meals ahead, stretching your food dollar, and providing balanced nutritious meals to the family. Tops launches annual Food for Families Campaign Tops Friendly Markets is once again hosting its annual Food for Families Campaign, now in its 17th year, with a goal to provide more than two million meals for neighbors in need. The campaign runs now through December 24, 2023. Tops Food for Families Campaign is synonymous with The Little Brown Bag of Hope. Customers can purchase a Little Brown Bag of Hope paper icon at the register anytime they shop. At the register, customers will be asked if they want to support the campaign by buying a $5, $10, and/or $20 bag for someone in need in our community or to round up their change. Little Brown Bags which are filled with nutritious items that will help families extend
their meal planning, can also be purchased at any self-scan register as well. Virtual Little Brown Bags of Hope will also be available for purchase online by visiting https://www.topsneighborshelpingneighbors.com so no matter what the weather, a donation can be made right from their phone, tablet, or desktop. Here customers can select what food bank they wish their donation to benefit. While donations can be made throughout the campaign until December 24, many locals love the tradition of bringing or purchasing their donation at the store on the day Tops hosts its one-day food drive. Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show donates $8,450 to local charities The 42nd annual Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show took place on Saturday, September 30, which was a beautiful, warm and sunny day. This year’s Auto Show celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Chevrolet Corvette. There was a record turnout of 652 entries, of which 101 were Corvettes. Thanks to the record turnout, the Apple Fest Auto Show was able to donate an incredible amount to charities in the Hilton area. This year’s recipients were the Hilton Food Shelf, The Cadet Cupboard, Walker Fire Department, Hilton Fire Department, Hilton Parma Recreation and The Hamlin Dog Shelter, with a majority of the funds going to the Hilton Food Shelf and Cadet Cupboard. The Hilton Apple Fest Auto Show is grateful to all of its sponsors and volunteers for their continued support. Deadline looms for NYS DMV vision tests

Many New Yorkers may be unable to renew their driver’s license because of an expired vision test. Due to COVID, many DMV tests were postponed, but these test requirements were not canceled. The DMV’s website notes that those impacted are those whose license expired between March 1, 2020, and August 31, 2021. If a vision test is not submitted to the DMV by December 1, 2023, the driver’s license will be suspended. Visit the DMV’s website and engage in the system’s online chat services to see if you are impacted. Opinion/Comments Questions BCSD budget and capital project The budget for the Brockport Central School District has been approved for 2023-2024, which includes supplies and free meals for all students. On December 12, 2023, there will be a vote on Proposition for Capital Improvements. I had three children attend Brockport schools and had to purchase all their school supplies and meals, and that was almost 20 years ago. Now, I am a senior citizen on Social Security with a fixed income, and should not have to pay for these free supplies and meals. Voters, compare your 2022 taxes with 2023 tax-
es. My school taxes have gone up 21 percent, yet Social Security only went up 3.2 percent. Why should senior citizens have to pay so much? We have already paid our share. Why is there a second vote, when it should have been done the first time and eliminate the free supplies and meals? Superintendent Bruno and the School Board need to address this issue. BCSD Superintendent responds to questions First, we thank Mr. Mosher for taking the time to share his concerns. We take concerns and inquiries like these very seriously as it is Brockport Central School District’s fundamental goal to promote transparency in all district-wide decisions. We also thank Westside News for the opportunity to respond. School supplies are funded by our District’s general fund revenue sources which include taxes as well as state aid and federal aid. Taxes were not increased to cover school supplies. We believe it is important for all our students to have the supplies necessary to succeed in school, therefore we established efficiencies in our budget to cover this expenditure. The current percentage of our students eligible for free and reduced lunch qualified our District to participate in a federal program called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This program provides a free breakfast and a free lunch to all students in our District each day. The meal cost is completely paid for through the federal CEP program and New York State aid, leaving no cost to our District or our local taxpayers. When establishing future budgets and potential tax increases, we thoughtfully factor in the current economy and potential impacts to our taxpayers. For the 2023-2024 school year, we recommended, and the voters approved a 1.98% levy increase. Any individual changes to property taxes (increases or
reductions) are due to the function of New York State equalization rates and local assessments, which our District has no control over. Additional information regarding our 2023-24 budget can be found in the Business Department section of our District’s website at www.bcs1.org/Page/1136. We would like to clarify that there is no second vote taking place for our District’s budget. The vote taking place on December 12, 2023, is for a proposed Capital Improvement Project. New York State school districts are required to bring Capital Project propositions to voters. We are delighted to inform everyone that this project has no local tax impact. If you are reading this, you likely have seen our 2023 Brockport CSD Capital Improvement Project Brochure insert in this issue of Westside News. The brochure as well as additional information can also be found in the Business Department section of our District’s website at www.bcs1.org/Page/1255. We will be holding a public information meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, in our Hill School Cafetorium. In honor of Veterans Day, Cindy DiGiacco’s kindergarten class at Village Elementary School in Hilton had a special visitor via Zoom. Sergeant First Class Tim Brugger, who is stationed in Kuwait with the National Guard, showed students tanks and trucks, uniforms, and equipment. He also answered students’ questions that they prepared in their Writers’ Workshop. “The students were so engaged and his own daughters, sixth grader Isabel, third grader Makenna, and first grader Cassandra were able to share in the experience,” said DiGiacco. In addition to thanking Sergeant Brugger for his service, the class donated an ice cream sundae gift basket and pizza certificate to the family. Hawley honors fallen hero from Genesee County Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,CBatavia) and State Sen. George Borrello (R,C) recently spearheaded an initiative to designate a portion of Route 63 in the town of Pavilion as the “SP4 George Harold Fry Memorial Highway.” George Harold Fry, a native of the Genesee County town, was a Specialist-4 in the Army during

the Vietnam War. On July 11, 1969, SP4 Fry gave his life to restore the company’s radio network during an assault by the North Vietnam Army. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his bravery and sacrifice in the battle. As the proposal has been signed by the governor, Hawley is proud to see this local hero get the recognition that he deserves. “As an Army veteran and member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I was honored to sponsor this proposal recognizing one of Western New York’s most valiant, Specialist George Harold Fry,” said Hawley. “I want to thank Sen. Borrello for carrying this bill in the Senate, and I want to extend my congratulations to the Fry family for this prestigious honor. For generations to come, the SP4 George Harold Fry Memorial Highway will stand as a testament to Specialist Fry’s heroism and commitment to his country and our freedom.” Provided information

SUNY Brockport launches Heroes for the Common Good Program A new program in SUNY Brockport’s School of Business & Management is seeking to reward and invest in some of the brightest stars working in Greater Rochester area non-profits. Legal NoticeS Legal Notice Village of Churchville NOTICE PURSUANT TO LOCAL FINANCE LAW SECTION 36.00 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT the Board of Trustees of the Village of Churchville, New York, by the favorable vote of not less than two-thirds of all of the members of such Board has, on November 13, 2023, adopted, pursuant to the Local Finance Law of the State of New York, a bond resolution stating that: WHEREAS, the purpose hereinafter described consists of the acquisition of equipment authorized to be undertaken by the authorized to be undertaken by the Village Board of Trustees pursuant to the Village Law; WHEREAS, the Village hereby determines and finds that the proposed action hereinafter described constitutes a “type II” action under the State Environmental Quality Review Act of the State of New York and the applicable regulations thereunder (“SEQRA”) which will not result in any significant adverse environmental impacts in that the purpose consists of the purchase of equipment, and such purpose is not subject to any further environmental review under SEQRA; now therefor, be it RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF CHURCHVILLE, NEW YORK, (hereinafter referred to as the “Village”), by the favorable vote of not less than two-thirds of all of the members of such Board, as follows: 1. the acquisition of a Terex Commander 4047 Hydraulic Rotating Digger Derrick with a Turntable Winch, which may include original equipment or furnishings required in connection therewith for such Village use (hereinafter referred to as “purpose”), is authorized and general obligation serial bonds in an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $420,000 and bond anticipation notes in anticipation thereof (and renewals thereof) of the Village are authorized to be issued to finance said purpose; and 2. the estimated aggregate maximum cost of said purpose, including preliminary costs and costs incidental thereto and costs of the financing thereof, is estimated to be $420,000 for said purpose, and said amount is hereby appropriated therefor, and the plan for financing of said purpose is to provide all of such maximum cost by issuance of obligations as therein authorized; and 3. (a) said purpose is one of the class of objects or purposes described in Subdivision 28 of Paragraph (a) of Section 11.00 of the Local Finance Law, and the period of probable usefulness of said purpose is fifteen (15) years, (b) the proposed maximum maturity of said bonds authorized by the resolution will be in excess of five years, (c) current funds required to be provided prior to the issuance of the bonds or notes authorized, pursuant to Section 107.00 of the Local Finance Law, to the extent applicable, if any, will be provided, (d) the notes authorized are not issued in anticipation of bonds for an assessable improvement, and (e) there are presently no outstanding bond anticipation notes issued in anticipation of the sale of said bonds; and 4. the bonds and notes authorized by the resolution shall contain the recital of validity prescribed in Section 52.00 of the Local Finance Law and such bonds and notes shall be general obligations of the Village and all the taxable real property in the Village is subject to the levy of ad valorem taxes to pay the principal thereof, and interest thereon, without limitation as to rate or amount, subject to applicable statutory limitations, if any; and 5. the Village reasonably expects to reimburse the general fund, or such other fund as may be utilized, from the proceeds of the obligations authorized for expenditures, if any, from such fund that may be made for the purpose prior to the date of the issuance of such obligations, and such is a declaration of official intent under Treasury Regulation §1.150-2; and 6. the power to further authorize the sale, issuance and delivery of said bonds and notes and to prescribe the terms, form and contents of said bonds and notes, including, without limitation, the consolidation with other issues, the determination to issue bonds with substantially level or declining annual debt service, whether to authorize the receipt of bids in an electronic format, all contracts for and determinations with respect to, credit and liquidity enhancements, if any, and to sell and deliver said bonds and notes, subject to the provisions of the resolution and the provisions of the Local Finance Law, is delegated to the Village Treasurer, the Village’s chief fiscal officer, the Village Treasurer and the Village Clerk or Deputy Clerk are authorized to sign by manual or facsimile signature and attest any bonds and notes issued pursuant to the resolution, and are authorized to affix to such bonds and bond anticipation notes the corporate seal of the Village of Churchville; and 7. the faith and credit of the Village of Churchville, New York, are irrevocably pledged for the payment of the principal of and interest on such bonds and notes as the same respectively become due and payable, an annual appropriation shall be made in each year sufficient to pay the principal of and interest on such obligations becoming due and payable in such year; and 8. after compliance with the next paragraph hereof, the resolution shall be published in full by the Village Clerk of the Village of Churchville together with a notice in substantially the form prescribed by Section 81.00 of said Local Finance Law, and such publication shall be in each official newspaper of the Village, in the manner prescribed by law, and the validity of said bonds and bond anticipation notes issued in anticipation of the sale of said serial bonds may be contested only if such obligations are authorized for an object or purpose for which said Village is
not authorized to expend money, or the provisions of law which should be complied with, at the date of publication of the resolution are not substantially complied with, and an action, suit or proceeding contesting such validity is commenced within twenty (20) days after the date of such publication; or if said obligations are authorized in violation of the provisions of the Constitution; and 9. such bond resolution is subject to a permissive referendum of the qualified electors of the Village of Churchville, pursuant to Section 36.00 of the Local Finance Law and petitions protesting and requesting that it be submitted to the electors of the Village of Churchville for their approval or disapproval, may be filed with the Village Clerk at any time within thirty (30) days after the date of the adoption of such resolution. Jolene Ann Meyers Jolene Ann Meyers, beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2023, at the age of 63 in Rochester, New York. She was born on June 18, 1960, in Lockport, New York. Jolene was a loving, proud, creative, and determined woman who touched the lives of many. Jolene dedicated her life to helping others as a Social Worker, providing support and assistance to those in need. Her compassionate nature and unwavering commitment made a positive impact on the lives she touched. Jolene was a graduate of Batavia High School and later pursued higher education at SUNY Brockport. In her free time, Jolene enjoyed indulging in her hobbies, which included crafts, karaoke, and decorating. These activities allowed her to express her creativity and bring joy to those around her. Jolene’s family was of great importance to her. She is survived by her children, James and Shannon Meyers (Evan Tornatore), who were a constant source of pride and joy. She is also survived by her mother, Jacqueline Wagner, and siblings: Joseph Busch, Al Busch, Linda Buckel Blanc, and Elizabeth Wagner. Jolene was preceded in death by her sister, Laurie Busch. For many years, Jolene attended Nativity BVM church in Brockport, New York. Her faith was a very important part of her life. A Celebration of Life was held on November 12 at The American Legion in Brockport. Her infectious smile, fun attitude and caring ways affected many. Becky had a passion for reading and also enjoyed many outdoor activities including hiking, kayaking, skiing, and gardening. Margaret was born and raised in Passaic, NJ, but spent most of the last 63 years in the Rochester area. She retired from the NYS Insurance Fund in 1981 and began working for Kelly Temps so she would have more time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed travelling the world with friends and family, swimming, and crocheting. There will be no local service as she will be returning to New Jersey for a private interment. •Coleman, Carl D., died November 1, 2023 at age 87. As a husband, father, father-in-law and uncle, he will be severely missed by his family. Carl was an avid fisherman and turned his passion into a career. He owned and operated Carl D. Coleman Sporting Goods in Spencerport for many years. He also ran a guiding business with his son-in-law, Jay. Most of his days were spent on the water with clients and friends. Carl had a significant impact on the fishing community through his Fly Shop, fly-tying classes and fishing lessons. He was both a friend and mentor to many. Visitation was held November 14 at the Fowler Funeral Home, Inc., Brockport. A private Graveside Service will be held at White Haven Memorial Park. St. Paul Lutheran Church celebrates 125 years Blessings on top of blessings were celebrated on November 5 when the St. Paul Lutheran Church family gathered to mark 125 years of ministry. Following worship, about 230 people gathered in the gymnasium for lunch and a presentation highlighting many good moments over the first century and a quarter. Special guests including Joe Lee, Village of Hilton Mayor; Dave Crumb, Hilton Historian; Rev. Dr. Myke Merril, the longest serving clergy member in Hilton; and Rev. Larry Stokovic from Hope Church came to share encouragement with the congregation. St. Paul’s first worship service was held in 1898 with 36 individuals representing 10
families. Today, St. Paul worships 240 per weekend and operates a school drawing children from five different school districts. Provided information and photos
Brockport BFA Thesis Exhibit highlights two budding artists As part of their senior year projects, two visual artists – Merve Duyar and Rosalie Santiago – will show their works in a BFA Thesis Exhibition. The show will be on view at the Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery at SUNY Brockport from November 30 through December 10. The Gallery is located at 180 Holley Street, Brockport, and the exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, November 30, at 4 p.m. Notwithstanding their upcoming graduation, Duyar and Santiago already have something to crow about: Each had pieces in the “Best of SUNY” juried exhibition that has been on display in Albany for the past year. According to associate professor Sara
DiDonato, “applying to juried exhibitions, preparing work for installation, and writing brief statements about work are all part of learning about being a professional artist. The Department of Art is so proud of these exemplary students.” Duyar’s work explores aquatic life. In their artist statement, they write that their work “started as exploration and manifestation of my own personal fears. The unknown can be frightening, and my attempts to make sense of the unknown involve breaking down complex organisms into understandable parts that seem more tangible and accessible.” In her work, Santiago includes “depictions of the different stages that one goes through while on a spiritual journey.” Provided information
