newsmakers Rachel Kilts, a junior at The College at Brockport in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, recently received the Dr. Christine Howe Memorial Scholarship.

The award was presented by the Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society (GVRPS) at their annual conference, held at the Rochester Museum & Science Center on November 9. The scholarship is awarded to an exceptional undergraduate student studying recreation in the western region of New York, with the potential to become a leader in the recreation and leisure service industry. The award was created in memory of Dr. Christine Howe, former chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at The College at Brockport. Kilts is the president and a founding member of the Student Rec Club at The College at Brockport, and is currently completing an internship with the Parks and Recreation Department in the Town of Ogden, planning and leading recreational programming.

The GVRPS is the professional organization for recreation and park professionals in the Genesee Valley region, and exists to promote the benefits of recreation and parks to its’ membership and the public.

Jeffrey Harradine, of Brockport, has been selected by “Rochester Business Journal” as a 2018 Forty Under 40 honoree.

Forty Under 40 recognizes 40 men and women, under the age of 40, who have achieved professional success and have also made significant civic contributions to the community.

Harradine is a commercial litigation attorney and partner with Ward Greenberg Jeffrey Harradine Heller & Reidy LLP. He has achieved significant professional success since graduating from Cornell Law School in 2004. After serving as a law clerk to the late Franklin S. Van Antwerpen, Circuit Judge for the United States Court of Appeals in Philadelphia, Harradine entered private practice as an associate in the New York City office of Clifford Chance. In 2007, he returned to Rochester and joined Ward Greenberg. He was elected partner in January 2013.

In addition to his legal practice, Harradine serves his alma mater as Vice President of the Brockport Central School District Board of Education. He also is a Director of The Kilian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt Foundation and a Trustee of the Western Monroe Historical Society. He has assumed leadership roles in both the Monroe County and New York State Bar Associations over the years.
