Enjoy watching the sun set over the museum grounds while listening to the sounds of local musicians during the Summer Sunset Series at Genesee Country Village & Museum.

Summer Sunset Series returns to GCV&M Genesee Country Village & Museum’s Summer Sunset Series is back again this season with a full lineup of musical performances on the Great Meadow select Fridays through July and August.

The Summer Sunset Series presents a rare opportunity to enjoy the museum grounds after-hours and watch as the sun sets over Flint Hill. The Freight House Pub and deck will be open for drinks and the Depot Restaurant will be open for dinner, snacks, and ice cream. Outdoor and deck seating will be available, or bring a chair or blanket and relax on the Great Meadow.

Picnicking is welcome, but bringing alcohol from outside of the premise is not permitted. Families are welcome to come enjoy the grounds, have dinner or drinks, and spend an evening surrounded by the sounds of summer. The Roc City Empanadas food truck will also be on the grounds on Friday, July 23, and Friday, September 3.

Live music can be enjoyed from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and food and drink will be served until 8 p.m. The museum closes at 9 p.m. during the Summer Sunset Series, and the Historic Village will be closed to visitors during these events.

Concert line-up: •July 23 – The Uptown Groove Hailing from Rochester, this group features

a six-piece ensemble that plays a variety of jazz, Motown, R&B soul, funk, rock, and current top 40 pop/rock.

•August 13 – The GateSwingers Rochester ’s original dance band, the GateSwingers Big Band is an exciting 15 piece group with vocalists and a master of ceremonies. The band features dance music from the 40s, 50s, 60s and present day.

•August 27 – The Pearlz Band Based out of Rochester, The Pearlz Band is an Americana group with a sound merged from folk, country, rhythm and blues, and Rock & Roll. Together since 2008, this trio has crafted a unique and engaging blend of new and old favorites.

•September 3 – Stone Age Romeos This group of guys attended Greece Athena together in the 70s, and continue to play around the local Rochester area - and they all have a story or two about visiting the museum when they were younger. Get ready for 60s, 70s, and 80s classic rock.

All aboard for a trolley ride July 25 The New York Museum of Transportation, in Rush, will be offering trolley rides included with museum admission on Sunday, July 25. Reservations are required and may be made at www.http://nymtmuseum. org/summer2/. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and rides depart at 11:30 a.m., 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m. Admission, including the ride, is $10 adults, $9 seniors 65+, and $6 youths age three to 12.

The scenic two-mile round trip ride aboard the vintage electric trolley car harks back to the interurban era of a century ago. Back then, fast, clean transportation on luxurious trolleys was offered between Rochester and distant cities such as Buffalo, Syracuse, and Geneva.

In the museum, there are several such trolley cars on display, as well as a steam locomotive, the Midtown Plaza Monorail, highway and horse-drawn vehicles, three model railroads, and numerous exhibits.

The museum gallery features a 10-minute video about the Rochester Subway and an

exhibit of railroad photos and prints. The well-stocked gift shop caters to the needs of all ages.

The New York Museum of Transportation is located just 20 minutes south of Rochester at 6393 East River Road in Rush, one mile north of Rt. 251 (I-390 exit 11).

Sandy Creek Mining Sluice now open at Brightly’s Farm Market

by Tami Raco The Brightlys had their first experience mining for gems and fool’s gold when they took their grandchildren to the Perry Drive-In. The family had so much fun together, and Betsy Brightly loved how interactive it was for both the children and adults. “What a great family activity it was to do together,” she said. This experience prompted the Brightlys to look into having a Sandy Creek Mining Sluice at their farm market in Hamlin.

Visitors of all ages are enjoying the new Sandy Creek Mining Sluice at Brightly’s Farm Market.

Betsy saw that there were only a few Sandy Creek mining sluices in the entire state of New York. After researching the company, she learned they have 800 locations in 26 countries. The Christian, family-owned business located in Ohio builds and supplies the mining equipment and provides the panning supplies. Although it was an investment, Dean and Betsy Brightly felt it was a worthwhile addition to be able to provide this rewarding opportunity where families can have a fun, enriching activity to do and enjoy their time together, especially after such a challenging and isolating time during the pandemic.

The Mining Sluice, designed to look like an old farm water tower, arrived at Brightly’s Farm Market at the end of June, and they held a grand opening of the attraction on July 3. It is great for children and adults of all ages. The cost starts at $6 for a bag of sand that the child takes to the sluice. They use a wooden screen and shake it into the water, searching for all sorts of treasures. More than 50 items can be mined for, including fool’s gold, gemstones, shark’s teeth, and fossils, which can be collected or made into jewelry. In addition to the sluice, Brightly’s serves homemade lunches, has a playground, a bakery, ice cream, and slushies. Adults can even enjoy a wine slushy from the Hunt Country tasting room located at the farm.

The grand opening brought hundreds of people from across the region. “There was not one unhappy face,” Betsy said. When she looked at the crowd, she knew There’s always room for ice cream. she made the right decision in bringing this to the area. “It’s the simple things in life we can appreciate, like seeing families enjoying their time together.”

Betsy said, “We are planning to offer birthday parties, special event packages, and homeschool opportunities in the future.”
