Dance on film has been a “thing” for decades. However, during the past year, it has become more of a necessity.

The dance students in the Department of Dance at SUNY Brockport have been negotiating both the pandemic and their artistic inspirations as they have prepared Virtual DANCE/Strasser. The concert will premiere on Saturday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m., and stream on an on-demand basis through May 22. Though the event is free, patrons must register online at fineartstix.brockport.edu to receive the link to view the performance. Once a patron has received the link, they may watch the concert at any time during the time the link is live. Donations will also be accepted at the ticketing site. Patrons may contact the Tower Fine Arts Center box office for guidance at 395-2787.

Live performance of The Fantasticks at OFC New York State allowed live public theater events to reopen this month for audiences to attend with safety measures in place. OFC Creations Theatre Center will be presenting The Fantasticks from April 23 through 25.

The Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, and their two fathers who try to keep them apart. The narrator, El Gallo, asks the audience to use their imagination and follow him into a world of moonlight and magic.

All performances will be live in person and limited to 100 attendees with social distancing between parties. The center is HEPA filtered and will receive thorough cleaning and disinfecting before and after event. Hand sanitizer stations are positioned throughout center. Attendees will have at least four seats between them and another party, and when possible, will receive their own row in the center.

If reserved seating is required, assigned seats will be given to audiences upon arrival. Masks are currently required throughout the center except while eating or drinking. Food and bar service will be brought to attendees’ seats to limit congestion at the bar.

Live in person performances of The Fantasticks will be Friday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, April 25, at 2 p.m. at the OFC Creations Theatre Center, 3450 Winton Place, Brighton.

Co-artistic directors, Associate Professor Mariah Maloney and Music Director Greg Woodsbie have curated a program of innovative works created by undergraduate and graduate students within the dance department. The evening brings forward 13 visually compelling and multitextured dance for camera works, “where students’ inspiration and growth is palpable as they demonstrate a keen eye and increasing expertise in the medium of film.”

In the concert, BFA undergraduate student Kaitlin Hill’s “Touch” relates to the pandemic, during which so many are lacking physical comfort and touch. Hill explores the way the relationship between positive and negative touch has been heightened; she asks “how does the body navigate between desiring touch one moment and fearing it the next?” BFA undergraduate student Kelsey Scalzo leads us on “an exploration into the ways one dancer can become many” in “With All My Friends.” MFA graduate student Megan Deshotel shares a work that began before COVID and evolved into a dance film. Her “‘Ensemble’ is a playful and multi-layered work commenting on specific body parts and the body’s interaction with an ensemble of shoes.” MFA graduate student Carey Barnette’s “‘Be a Lady They Said’ looks at what it means to be a ‘lady’ in a society that gives contradicting standards.”

“Life begins the day you start a garden.”

This beautiful Chinese proverb really says it all for those who love to garden. April is National Gardening Month, and it’s a great time to get excited about the upcoming growing season as well as recognize the numerous benefits of growing things.

National Gardening Month has only been celebrated in recent decades. Back in April of 1986, President Ronald Reagan declared the week of April 12-18 National Gardening Week, but it wasn’t until April of 2002 that the event became an entire month-long celebration dedicated to gardening.

Gardening has a long list of benefits, including both physical and mental. According to Michigan State University Extension (MSU), gardening is associated with mental clarity and feelings of reward, and not surprisingly, there are many physical benefits as well.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that moderate-intensity level activity for 2.5 hours a week can reduce the risk for obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke, depression, colon cancer, and premature death. Gardening is considered a moderate-intensity level activity by the CDC, meaning you can achieve those 2.5 hours a week by gardening. In fact, gardeners are more likely to exercise 40 to 50 minutes longer on average than those who choose activities like biking or walking.

Exercising both the arms and legs is recommended to help prevent illnesses like coronary disease, MSU says, and gardening incorporates the entire body in exercise.

Gardening may even help students do better on tests. The journal “Biological Psychiatry” reports that some experts say fresh air can help prevent Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), resulting in higher test scores.

The stress-relieving benefits of gardening have also been scientifically proven. Stress leads to a number of health issues, including irritability, headaches, stomachaches, heart attacks, and worsening of pre-existing conditions in the body. An experiment published in the “Journal of Health Psychology” compared gardening to reading as stress-relieving activities. Test subjects who gardened had a more significant decrease in stress than those who read.

Vegetable gardening can help save on your food budget and promote healthy plant-based eating. In a ten-year-long study done by Burpee Seed Company, it was found that for every $1 spent on gardening items such as seed, fertilizer, etc., gardeners harvested $25 worth of produce.

Scientists at the University of Missouri say growing plants helps the environment.

Plants filter the air and help curb soil erosion. They lower our “carbon footprint” by removing carbon dioxide from the air as they carry out photosynthesis. Growing your own food in your own backyard means no shipping of produce over great distances, helping reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced by trucks.

Celebrate National Gardening month this year, get out there and grow something! The many benefits are too great to ignore.
