The Sweden/Clarkson Community Center’s kitchen has undergone a facelift over the past several months. A wall was removed, cabinetry reconfigured, sinks relocated, a new dishwasher and ice machine installed. Some new cabinets, ceiling tiles and paint rounded out the renovation. Most of the work was performed inhouse by the buildings and grounds department. The kitchen is inspected annually by the Monroe County Health Depart-
ment and some staff members are food-safety certified. The recreation department offers youth cooking and baking lessons and dinner, lunch and breakfast events for seniors and the general community. Hawley proclaims Jell-O week in New York State Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,CBatavia) introduced a resolution on February 12 declaring February 12 through 18, 2024 as Jell-O week in the state of New York. Jell-O was originally created in 1897 by a carpenter from Le Roy named Pearle Wait. Wait experimented with gelatin and came up with the fruit-flavored dessert, which his wife, Mary, named Jell-O. The Jell-O Company changed ownership several times before leaving Le Roy in 1964. Known as America’s Most Famous Dessert, Jell-O still remains a distinguished part of the town’s history. The Jell-O museum, located on East Main Street, still displays the company’s original advertising art,
molds, spoons, toys, collectibles and recipe books. “The founding of the Jell-O Company is a testament to the inspiring ingenuity and innovation that can only be found in Western New York,” said Hawley. “America’s Most Famous Dessert earned its name for its impact across our state and country for creating jobs, economic opportunity and improving the quality of life for people throughout our nation. •The YWCA of Rochester and Monroe County is holding its Warm Beds campaign through March. The campaign raises money and awareness for YWCA’s homeless shelters, to serve women and children during the coldest months of the year. CCCSD Life Skills class makes Anna Conjerti of Hilton was named to donation to Endless Highway the 2023 dean’s list at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. She is a general preveterinary medicine major. Students in the Life Skills class at Churchville-Chili High School spent time during November and December crafting Buddy the Elves, working together to assemble the dolls using rice and other materials. Once assembled, students sold the elves to staff members throughout the district to raise proceeds for Endless Highway. In total, 111 elves were crafted and sold, raising $772 to donate to the organization. Endless Highway is a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to ensuring children and adults who use mobility devices have opportunities to participate in adaptive and inclusive sports, recreation, and arts. A representative from the organization visited
the class in February to discuss what the organization does and how they have helped students in the Churchville-Chili School District. A check was presented to Endless Highway during the visit. Each year, the class selects a different organization to donate the funds raised through the holiday craft sale. Since beginning the tradition in 2005, the Life Skills class has raised a total of $14,545 for charity. •Herzog, Roberta A., died unexpectedly February 13, 2024, at age 66. Predeceased by her parents Donald and Patricia Herzog, and her brothers Stephen and Richard Herzog. She is survived by her sister Nancy (Robert) Hendrikx; sister-in-law Deborah (Leon Cady) Herzog; nephew Philip (Rebecca) Herzog; nieces Tonya (Nicholas) Satter and Lisa Hendrikx; great nieces and nephew Taylor, Sophia, Sawyer and Cash; best friend Judy Lowery and her daughter Alexis. Roberta served many years at Bells Grocery, Lakeside Memorial Hospital and Walmart. She was a movie fanatic, and frequented many shows followed by lunch with her brother, moments she has always held dear. She grooved to karaoke, delighted in spending days at the mall, dancing and traveling, and had a passion for anything Disney and Harry Potter. •Hauck, Ronald James, died February 8, 2024 at age 82. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Alice Hauck; his son, Brian Hauck; the mother of his children, Joan (Stalens) Lewis; his son-in-law, Lowell Huff Sr.; and his brother, Roger Hauck. He is survived by his daughters, Janette, and Terri (Harry) Kreps; his grandchildren, Lowell “DJ” (Andrea) Huff Jr., Carl Huff, Stacy (Brian) Melton, and Daniel Morrison; six great-grandchildren; nephew, Tom Hauck; niece, Tammy Hauck; and dear cousin, Carla Swenson. Ronald was retired from Bausch and Lomb where he worked as a glassmaker. He was an amateur magician and performed at many Boy Scout banquets. He was also an amateur KX2J radio operator. He belonged to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and enjoyed collecting HO and N gauge model trains. He was an American Indian War history buff. There will be no formal services. He was born January 24, 2000, in Brockport, a son of Quenna (Jason Reed) Bennett and Roger (Margaret Gonzales) Kingdollar, Jr. Roger was predeceased by his brother Raymond, grandfather Roger Kingdollar, Sr. and his uncle Terry Moyer. Brockport Main Street bridge update by Margay Blackman Village of Brockport Mayor Since the last update, concrete work—removing crumbling concrete from the pit floors and canal wall and pouring new concrete has proceeded, with a brief hiatus in January when it was too cold to do concrete work. The photos, from January 12, show the removal of the original 110-year-old counterweights from the south pit. Sawed into pieces that could be
lifted out by crane and loaded onto a truck, they were hauled to a Rochester facility to be recycled as sub-base crushed stone for driveways, parking lots, and roadways. In the next couple of weeks, look for work on the trusses at 7 North Main Street as new bottom chords (the horizontal bottom members that attach to the trusses), a new diagonal, and new gussets (the square pieces which attach to the chords and diagonals) are delivered and installed. Cornell Climate Stewards open enrollment New York has long been a national leader in climate change action, and the Cornell Climate Stewards volunteer training program provided through the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) will help support the state’s innovative Climate Smart Communities (CSC) program. The NYS CSC program is an effective and adaptable program that helps communities take proactive steps to encourage climate resilience and sustainability. To support this program, CCE is looking to train and engage local Climate Stewards to spearhead projects in their communities. Cornell Climate Stewards volunteers receive comprehensive training on climate change science, while also learning about how to plan and implement solutions for NY communities. Enrollment is now open for Cornell Climate Stewards Program. The cost is $75 to take the course and become certified as a Cornell Cooperative Extension volunteer. Scholarships will be offered to those in need of financial assistance. The Cornell Climate Stewards program is a 12-week course that covers
topics such as climate science, impacts, mitigation, adaptation, public communication, interacting with local and state government, creating and planning local projects, and climate justice. Volunteers will learn how to develop and organize community projects, write grants, and more. They will also become part of a growing community of trained volunteers who meet to share ideas and network. Classes will be held in a hybrid format in-person and via zoom from March 16 to June 22 on Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m. The class will take place at the CCE Monroe office on 2449 St. Paul Boulevard, Rochester. There will be days off from the course that correspond with holidays on March 30, April 20, May 25, and June 15. Gary Bracken to resign from Spencerport Board of Education Gary Bracken, a longtime Spencerport Board of Education member and current president, has announced his decision to resign from the board after 14 years of service. Bracken intends to finish out this school year, then relocate for professional reasons. “It has been an honor to represent our community and work alongside the best educational leaders, faculty, staff and board colleagues,” Bracken said. “I have learned so much from all of you and our shared experiences and feel I am a better person for it. Together, we have withstood some difficult challenges such as a global pandemic, and together, we have strengthened the academic programs and opportunities for our students. I am proud of Spencerport and want to thank you all for your ongoing support.” As a parent and community member, Bracken has coached junior sports, served as the Taylor PTO president, and volunteered for the FIRST Robotics team. In 2022, he was elected to his fifth term on the school board, and for several of those years, fulfilled the position of president. In addition, he has served as the president of the Monroe County School Board’s Association.

Comments A heartfelt hope to take root It may seem like perennial winter but spring is taking root. You can see evidence in the growing buds and the return of the light. Did you know that it takes seven trees for every child born to supply the oxygen needed for a lifetime? You can thank trees for every breath you have taken so far. Our Village of Brockport takes tree planting seriously; for beauty’s sake but health as well. Other towns and villages in our region are doing the same. This past year, decaying trees were replaced though several were planted for the first time. There are many more to come this Arbor Day. Hawley calls to ‘pump the brakes’ on electric school bus mandate Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,CBatavia) was joined by his colleagues in the state Senate and Assembly to unveil a proposal to delay the requirement for school districts to purchase all-electric school buses from 2027 to 2045. The group also called for a cost-benefit analysis to assess this policy’s impact on schools and taxpayers. While the state has set aside roughly $500 million to help with this transition, the cost of these new school buses would come out far higher, with a nearly $20 billion price tag for school districts across the state. Rural schools have also raised concerns that these zero-emission buses would not be reliable enough to handle long commutes and challenging weather. Hawley believes this mandate must be pushed back so that school districts
can properly address these concerns. Hawley said, “This zero-emission busing mandate for school districts is unworkable, unreasonable and unattainable. Not only are these new electric buses not reliable enough for rural areas but they also cost triple the price of a standard school bus. This is why the Majority refuses to do any kind of study on the effectiveness of the policy because they know this regulation will not work and come straight out of the pockets of local school property taxpayers. Our children should not be guinea pigs for these extreme climate policies. We need to slow this process down to assess the effectiveness of this policy so we keep our students safe and don’t deprive schools of their much-needed resources.” Provided information

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County is now recruiting interested students for the 2024 Landscape Technicians Training Program (LTTP). Now in its 30th year, the LTTP has successfully trained hundreds of Rochester area residents to pursue rewarding careers in all aspects of landscaping. With more than 60 instructors from the landscaping industry, the LTTP offers not only an excellent knowledge base for students, but also daily opportunities to network with industry professionals and employers. Classes include topics such as plant and soil science, integrated pest management, landscape design, hardscaping, tree service, and entrepreneurship. All participants receive their OSHA 10 Hour
Safety Certification, as well as the Basic Horticulture Certification through Cornell Cooperative Extension. Classes are held daily Monday through Friday, March 4 through April 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Lower Level of Olmstead Lodge, 170 Reservoir Avenue, Rochester. In addition to classroom instruction and networking, participants will visit commercial garden centers, greenhouses, sports fields, and parks, as well as engage in hands-on training in the field. New tomato variety has local roots by Kristina Gabalski It’s being called “delightful” – a new tomato variety available this year from Fruition Seeds in Naples, New York. “Yellow Submarine” has deep New York State roots. In addition to being offered by Fruition, it was developed by Phillip Griffiths, an associate professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science, Horticulture Section, in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. The name “Yellow Submarine” reflects the tomato’s yellow color and oblong shape. It has clear skin and a semi-translucent look and also resists cracking on the vine. An article by Holly Hartigan published in the Cornell Chronicle on January 8, provided details about the unusual tomato and its development. Griffiths specializes in brassica vegetables, but decided to try his hand at tomato breeding several years ago as something fun to do on Friday afternoons, the article said. Griffiths crossbreeds many types of small-fruited tomatoes which results in a great variety of colors and shapes. The tomatoes go through a period of evaluation to find the types that people like and that perform well here in the Northeast. “Yellow Submarine” was bred, developed and cultivated both at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva and at the Cornell Agricultural Experiment Station’s Homer C. Thompson Vegetable Research Farm in Freeville, NY, Cornell says. Griffiths and his team turned to Fruition Seeds to help with the process of commercializing the variety. According to Cornell, Fruition customers decided on the name for the tomato, in a vote. More than 80 ideas for the name were submitted. Fruition spent two years growing the tomato and taste-testing it with customers who liked it both for its flavor and unique shape. Cornell says home gardeners can purchase the seed from Fruition, but you likely will not see it sold at grocery stores. That’s because the partnership between Cornell and Fruition is meant to keep things

Petra Page-Mann, the co-founder of Fruition Seeds, noted in the Cornell Chronicle article that “Yellow Submarine” is not a hybrid. It is an openpollinated variety and has the potential to become an heirloom variety in the future. The seed Fruition saves will grow true to type – just like the parent, she said. Griffiths’ earlier breeding resulted in the colorful Galaxy Suite of grape tomatoes which is available from High Mowing Organic Seeds. “Starlight” is a yellow fingerling; “Sungazer” is orange in color and grape-shaped; “Supernova” is marbled and striped; “Comet” is red and grape shaped; and “Midnight Pear” is dark purple and pear-shaped. Griffiths says the Galaxy Suite varieties are ideal for organic and conventional growers as well as hobby gardeners.

The Churchville-Chili wrestling team was presented with the Earl Fuller/Frank Marotta Sportsmanship Award for 2023-2024 for Section V Division 1 schools on February 10.
CCCSD wrestling receives sportsmanship award The Churchville-Chili wrestling program is being recognized for demonstrating good sportsmanship. The program has been selected by the Wrestling Officials Association of Section V to receive the Earl Fuller/Frank Marotta Sportsmanship Award for 2023-2024 for Section V Division 1 schools. This award is given for demonstrating good sportsmanship at all levels including Varsity, JV and Modified, as well as the coaches and fans. The award is named after two men who spent decades with Section V wrestling. Earl Fuller, former wrestling coach at RIT, was one of the founders of the Section V Wrestling Officials Association in the late 1950s. He conducted wrestling clinics throughout the area that were instrumental in the development of high school wrestling in Section V. Frank Marotta, who coached at the former
Madison High, continues to serve as the Executive Secretary of the Section V Wrestling Officials Association and works with the State Wrestling Committee. “The Saints program takes pride in our conduct on and off the mat,” said Churchville-Chili wrestling coach Justin Raines. “For this to be seen and recognized, will just thrill all of those on the team.” The program was presented with a plaque prior to the finals of the New York State Qualifier at SUNY Brockport on February 10. The Saints will be represented by seniors Gael Sanchez at 285 lbs., Coy Raines at 215 lbs., and Cael Raines at 138 lbs, at the 61st Annual NYSPHSAA Championships in Albany February 23 and 24. Two CCCSD athletes sign to play collegiate sports Two Churchville-Chili senior athletes committed to competing at the collegiate level during a college signing ceremony, held on Tuesday, February 6, at ChurchvilleChili High School. Students attended the ceremony with family and friends, representing their future college by displaying apparel and items from the school. The ceremony began with an introduction from Athletic Director Michael Murray. Coaches then introduced the athletes, detailing the student’s athletic accomplishments while at Churchville-Chili and their plans for the future. Students were invited to sign their National Letter of Intent in front of the crowd. Athletes who participated in the signing event include: •Olivia Hogan – St. John Fisher for soccer Olivia is a three year varsity soccer player who has also participated on the unified basketball and unified bowling teams. As a sophomore, Olivia earned the Most Promising Saint Award. During her junior year, she was named to the Section V All Tournament Team while helping lead the team to a ranking of 20th in New York State and reaching the sectional finals. As a senior, Olivia was named the team’s Most Valuable Player, earned First Team All-County honors and was chosen to participate in the Exceptional Senior Game. She also served as captain of the team during her junior and senior years. She ended her soccer career at Churchville-Chili with a total of three goals and three assists.

He was selected for First Team All-County and Second Team All Greater Rochester as a senior this year, as well as Second Team All-County during his junior year. Andrew helped lead the Saints to win two Monroe County Division 2 titles in 2021 and 2022, and also led the Saints to the sectional finals in both his sophomore and senior years. Sinner named January 2024 Hickok Belt® Award winner Men’s tennis future star Jannik Sinner has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of January 2024. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The voters selected Sinner based on his performance in winning his first Australian Open title. The fast-rising star from Italy upset 10-time reigning champion Novak Djokovic in the semi finals, crushing his opponent early. It was Djokovic’s first defeat at the Australian Open since 2018.
