Brockport Summer Serenades news The Brockport Big Band returns to the Village’s canal side Welcome Center, just off of Main Street, at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening, July 21. The popular Big Band will play plenty of old favorites as well as some perhaps lesser-known tunes. As always, folding chairs and picnics are welcome at Brockport’s Summer Serenades. There’s plenty of room for dancing, too. The Band will play straight through from 7 to 8:30 p.m., ending as the sun begins to set. The July 28 Summer Serenade features Hanna PK, an artist who is new to the series, performing from 7 to 8:30 p.m. She is a solid pianist, soulful vocalist, and vibrant performer, born and raised in South Korea, currently residing in Rochester. She plays a wide variety of the blues and swing, old

school folk, and boogie-woogie. She has a dynamic songwriting style - ranging from a funky tune with socially conscious lyrics to a mournful slow blues, from a pop-edged ballad to an uplifting swinging number, and from barrelhouse boogie to jazz. More information is available at https://www. hannapk.com. Summer Serenades continues every Thursday night through the end of August, but with a 6:30 p.m. start time to adjust for an earlier sunset. In case of rain, Serenades events will move to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Main and State Streets. Information is available on the Village web site, www.brockportny.org and by phone at 585637-5300 ext 110. Provided information

Aurora House starts book club Grief is unique for every person and every instance of loss. It can be lifelong, devastating, and isolating. Yet, with some support from others we can endure, heal and even find happiness again. Aurora House is sponsoring a book club for the community where grief can be discussed comfortably and where one grieving can find some support. It is open to the public, and all are welcome. The group will meet the third Wednesday of each month, starting July 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Aurora House, 2495 South Union

Street, Spencerport. The first book is It’s OK That You’re Not OK: Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture that Doesn’t Understand, by Megan Devine. The format of the book is a conversational, easy read – the nitty gritty is expected to be found in the group’s discussion. It is suggested that participants buy a copy of the book, but this is not required – all can benefit from the discussion. RSVP for the July 20 session at https:// forms.gle/6rLobMKpAs9t296D6. Shakespeare on the Lawn returns to Brockport July 23 Shake on the Lake (SOTL) has produced live, outdoor, professional performances of William Shakespeare’s plays since 2012. This summer SOTL returns to live touring for the first time since 2019, with their own unique outdoor staging of the tragic Scottish play, MXBETH. Shake on the Lake’s professional actors bring the audience along through intimate shows performed in daylight inspired by Elizabethan staging practices. “By the pricking of the thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” Once upon a dreary heath in Scotland, three “weird sisters” conjure a prophecy that predicts Macbeth will ascend to the throne of Scotland. Since the passage of the Sullivan Act over 100 years ago, New York residents have been denied the full exercise of their constitutional rights. And those in New York City were even more severely restricted. The act was sponsored by Timothy Sullivan, a Tammany Hall Democrat, and required a license for citizens of this state to exercise their constitutional rights. In many states outside of NY, citizens enjoy the freedom to exercise their constitutional right. The constitutional right is explicitly stated in the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights. You don’t have to search penumbras to understand this right. Clearly stated by Thomas Jefferson, “No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.”

Whenever I hear someone say they are pro-choice, the following question comes to mind. Have you ever thought about the consequences if your mother or parents had made the choice to abort you? You would not exist.

New Yorkers have been denied rights for over 100 years

Who is eligible? When are you eligible? What does Medicare cover? What is Part A? Part B? C? Are drugs covered? How can I ensure my individual insurance needs will be met?

My Health Story 2022 survey brings focus to health equity As part of its mission to understand and bring focus to health equity, Common Ground Health is launching its My Health Story 2022 survey. Residents of Chemung, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates counties are invited to answer questions about their health by completing the online survey at MyHealthStory2022.org. The goal is to provide a vehicle for at least 10,000 respondents to share their health stories, especially underresourced communities and individuals whose stories are often left out of efforts like these. Survey responses will help deepen understanding of the dynamics that drive health equity, and reveal where program and policy changes could make our communities healthier. The survey will be open throughout the summer. “Four years ago, Common Ground Health conducted the My Health Story 2018 survey, which led to a host of insights that were published in health equity reports such

as Overloaded and The Color of Health,” said Mary Beer, Ontario County public health director. “These learnings also formed the foundations of health improvement plans developed by local health departments.” “We look forward to hearing the health stories of our community – especially in this critical moment as we emerge from COVID-19,” said Wade Norwood, CEO of Common Ground Health. “Our 2022 survey delves into the key factors that play an outsized role in determining people’s health including housing and transportation, and examines the direct impact on health throughout all stages of life. We believe these findings will be key to understanding what services our community needs in the coming years.” In 2018, nearly 7,000 residents participated in the survey. Key findings included: •Housing impacts health in many ways. People who are stressed about housing payments are more likely to have health problems.

•Early death rates are as high in some rural communities as they are in poorer urban neighborhoods. •African Americans struggle with dramatically higher rates of heart disease than other groups. •Residents with the lowest incomes had three times the feelings of helplessness verses their higher income peers. By the time the survey closes, new accessibility and inclusion features will have been introduced to reach even more residents in the community. “For the findings to be meaningful, participation is needed from as many residents as possible,” explained Norwood. “We encourage everyone to share the link with friends, family and colleagues. Everyone’s story can make a difference.” Participants can complete the survey anonymously. It is available in English at MyHealthStory2022.org, and in Spanish at MiHistoriadeSalud2022.org. An ASL version of the survey will be available soon. Provided information

First American Six-Wicket tournament of the season held With a light breeze fluttering the flags that graced the corners of the courts, ten players faced off in the first American SixWicket croquet tournament of the season at the Grace & Truth SportsPark on Saturday, July 9. In a waterford-style doubles tournament, each person played four games but with a different partner each time in 45-

minute games that sometimes came down to real nail-biters in last turns. This type of game is vastly different than the game of Golf Croquet in that the players are often trying to control the action of two balls and send balls ahead to their next wicket (called a pioneer) so that they can continue to “run a break” and score more

Tournament winners (l-r): Third Place – Lee Kirk (Penfield) and Peter Bowers (Hilton); Second Place – Sue Sherer (Greece) and Joanne O’Keefe (Hilton); First Place – Sheila McLeod (Greece) and Rich Laging (Hilton).

Tournament participants (l-r): back row - Joanne O’Keefe, Sheila McLeod, Denise Ireland, Sue Sherer, Peter Bowers, Sue Laging; front row - James Peasley, Peter Sherer, Rich Laging, and Lee Kirk.

than wicket in their turn. It is always great fun when one succeeds in that strategy, but skill and strategy must combine in this game that is akin to a game of chess and billiards with balls on the closely cropped greens. It is a game for those that enjoy a challenge and have good hand-eye coordination. After four games each, players seeded to a ladder. First and fourth seeds played second and third seeds in the final. Fifth and sixth seeds are automatically the third place

Homesteads for Hope wins $100,000 Kubota Hometown Proud grant

From now until July 25, vote for Homesteads for Hope to receive an additional grant and be entered in a Kubota Equipment Sweepstakes As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the U.S., Kubota Tractor Corporation asked organizations across the country to share how they are working to revitalize underserved communities with new and promising solutions. As a nonprofit, Homesteads for Hope is familiar with how time-consuming applications can be and how rare it is to secure funding this way, but the special needs community has never needed a “win” more than it does right now, so they are dedicated to exploring all options. The Hometown Proud Contest was different from the start. The online form was short and sweet and so were the follow ups with Kubota. Homesteads for Hope was thrilled to learn that out of nearly 900 applications, they were selected as one of the five winners of the Hometown Proud Contest. As a result, they have been awarded a $100K grant to help them forward their mission of providing people of all ages and abilities an inclusive community where they can learn, work, eventually live, and each day grow their unique abilities. Kubota is calling for the public’s help in selecting a winner for its Community Choice Award grant, which would essentially double the award money. From now until July 25 at 11:59 p.m. CT, the public is invited to visit KubotaHometownProud.com to watch three-minute videos about the top five community projects. Homesteads for Hope supporters are encouraged to vote every day and encourage their family and friends to do the same. They hope to win over the hearts of people across the country, but are counting on the local community to spread the word and get people online to vote for Homesteads for Hope. As a bonus incentive, each vote cast is entered into a separate sweepstakes for a chance to win a Kubota sub-compact tractor or zero turn mower. The community project with the most votes will be announced as the Community Choice Award winner in August 2022. Homesteads for Hope is a 55-acre community farm located along the Erie Canal in Rochester. While many nonprofits

in the special needs community did not survive the pandemic, Homesteads grew over the last few years, and was able to take in some of the people who had nowhere else to go. Their farm currently serves over 600 families and hosts over 3,000 visitors each year. This intentional community breaks down barriers with programs that use “nature’s classroom” to teach people with disabilities important life skills, how to work real jobs, and is a model of true inclusion. Anyone interested in learning more about Homesteads for Hope is encouraged to visit their website, www. homesteadsforhope.org, or Facebook page. Or better yet, visit them in person at 2185 Manitou Road. Stop by their farm market or café or one of their open to the public events, including live music nights every Thursday. They say nothing beats experiencing their mission in action. Kubota is investing in hometowns across America – where the heart and soul of the country is thriving and in need of on-the-ground support. The 2022 Kubota Hometown Proud grant for Homesteads for Hope will be used to expand their Social Garden Program for those with more challenging needs and mobility-based disabilities, double their 80-plot community garden and the program’s impact, and renovate the estate home with new doors and windows to weatherproof the main program spaces for year-round use. If awarded the additional Community Choice Grant, Homesteads for Hope will also be able to finish the renovation on their 18th century historic barns to include new siding and electrical upgrades and pour new concrete pathways to increase accessibility. These projects would allow Homesteads to triple the amount of people they serve and provide the momentum needed to start their eagerly anticipated inclusive housing village, which will give 250 to 300 people of all abilities a place to call home. For more information and for Kubota Hometown Proud Grant Program official rules, visit KubotaHometownProud.com. Provided information and photo

Kubota Hometown Proud Grant Program Rules NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. Open to legal residents of the 50 United States (D.C.) 18 years of age and older. Void where prohibited. Sweepstakes begins 3/7/22 and ends 8/1/22. For Official Rules, prize descriptions and odds disclosure, visit KubotaHometownProud. com Sponsor: Kubota Tractor Corporation, 1000 Kubota Drive, Grapevine, TX 76051.

Kiwanis Club donates to Oak Orchard Health’s new Mommy and Me Program Peter Head, President of the Kiwanis Club of Brockport visited Oak Orchard Health (OOH) on July 11 to make a $1,000 donation to the new Mommy and Me Program. This program co-founded by Dr. Danielle Renodin-Mead, Pediatrician, Chief Medical Officer, and Robin Govanlu, LMHC, LAC, LPC, Director of Behavioral Health, is designed to support moms/primary caregivers and babies together in achieving optimal maternal and child health. The data shows that one in seven women experience postpartum depression or anxiety (according to Postpartum Support International). “The Kiwanis Club of Brockport looks for opportunities to help families in our community. The Mommy and Me Program addresses a critical need in our area. Our Club has always had a close relationship with Oak Orchard Health. We believe our missions are similar – supporting children and keeping everyone healthy,” said Peter Head, President of Kiwanis in Brockport. The Mommy and Me Program is an innovative approach to improve child health

outcomes in our region, and not only that but to also improve maternal health outcomes, with special attention to mental health in the postpartum period. All moms/primary caregivers and babies of Oak Orchard Health are automatically enrolled in the program, from birth up to 5 years of age. In addition, some of the benefits of the program include enrollment in the WIC program and access to the Diaper Bank. “As of the beginning of this year, 65 families were added to the WIC program who otherwise would not have had any way to get that service,” said Dr. Danielle Mead, Chief Medical Officer. Oak Orchard Care Managers are assigned to each mother to be evaluated for postpartum depression and anxiety, and then they are referred to one of OOH’s behavioral health counselors specializing in perinatal mental health. “Mom’s mental health is so important to the whole family and we’re taking care of it in the early stages. Parents are very grateful for this service,” said Robin Govanlu, LMHC, LAC, LPC, Director of Behavioral Health. Provided information and photo
