James Goetz, MD, a board-certified pediatrician, and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatricians, was presented with the James C. Fallon Distinguished Service Award during the December 5 Brockport Board of Education (BOE) meeting. Dr. Goetz, a Brockport resident, has served the Brockport community since 1978. He currently practices as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center and Golisano Children’s Hospital and is the School Physician for the Brockport and Holley Central School Districts. “The Board of Education and I are honored to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Goetz for his continued unwavering commitment and remarkable service throughout the years,” said Superintendent Sean C. The Lions Club of Chili is excited to be ringing the bell for The Salvation Army this holiday season. “We are deeply passionate of helping people in need – it’s our mission. Rochester area bands together to save more women from heart disease and stroke Nearly 240 people decked out from head to toe in red gathered December 7 at Monroe Golf Club for Rochester’s annual Go Red for Women Luncheon to raise awareness and help fund the fight against heart disease and stroke, which claim the lives of more women than all forms of cancer combined. The event raised nearly $130,000 “The Go Red for Women Luncheon is not just about wearing red. This is about all of us standing together and doing something to fight our No. 1 killer, which claims the lives of one in every three women. Losing even one woman to this largely preventable and treatable disease is too many,” said Karen Keady, vice president and chief nursing executive at UR Medicine and chairwoman of Rochester Go Red for Women. With a theme of Be the Beat, this year’s luncheon featured tools and information to help the Rochester community improve training and bystander CPR rates for women, who are still less likely to receive bystander CPR than men. The American Heart Association notes nearly three out of every four cardiac arrests happen in homes and is calling for at least one person in every household to learn Hands-Only CPR. The two simple steps of Hands-Only CPR are to call 911 and to push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives. Women are less likely to receive bystander CPR partly because people fear accusations of inappropriate touching, sexual assault or injuring the person. By equipping people with Hands-Only CPR training, they learn how simple the technique is and gain confidence that will help them act quickly in an emergency.

The Spencerport Kiwanis Club donated 50 gift bags, each containing a Ranger beanie, pencil, and small notepad to be distributed through Spencerport school counselors. Voters approve capital projects for Brockport and Kendall schools Voters approved proposed capital improvement projects for both the Brockport and Kendall school districts on December 12. The Brockport Central School District’s $28.27 million project passed by a vote of 222 to 81. “We would like to thank our community for voting in favor of our 2023 Capital Improvement Project,” said Superintendent Sean Bruno. “Whenever we improve our District’s facilities, it benefits our students, staff, and community. This project not only maintains a safe and comfortable learning environment, it also reduces energy usage, saves on utility costs, and improves cafeteria and gymnasium spaces. Kendall Central School District residents approved the proposed $12.68 million Kendall Capital Improvement Project by a vote of 102 to 41. The capital improvements consist of construction and reconstruction of existing school buildings and facilities, various site improvements and the acquisition of certain original furnishings, equipment, and apparatus and other incidental improvements. “I would like to thank the Kendall community for supporting the proposed Capital Improvement Project and partnering with us to ensure that we can continue to provide our students and staff with top-notch facilities,” said Superintendent Nicholas Picardo. Wegmans Check Out Hunger campaign raises $687K for Foodlink Greater Rochester-area shoppers showed up in a big way at Wegmans this fall, helping to raise $686,667 for the annual Check Out Hunger campaign to benefit Foodlink. Foodlink and Wegmans celebrated the 30th anniversary of this critical fundraiser, which supports Foodlink’s food-banking operations and many of its innovative programs and services. During six weeks this fall, shoppers had the option of donating a set amount or rounding up their grocery bills as they went through the checkout line at their local store. The campaign has donated more than $15 million to Foodlink’s operations for the past three decades. Although the campaign started in Rochester, as Wegmans has grown it has expanded the fundraiser into a companywide initiative to benefit 48 food banks throughout the Feeding America network. “It was clear from the start of this year’s Check Out Hunger campaign that the entire Wegmans team devoted significant time and energy to making this 30th anniversary a special one,” said Julia Tedesco, President & CEO of Foodlink. “The results are incredible, the effort by Wegmans team members was unmatched, and we are deeply grateful to all of the shoppers who donated in support of our mission to end hunger and build healthier communities.” All 21 participating stores in the

Rochester area brainstormed new and exciting ways to promote the pointof-sale campaign and fundraise, such as employee and customer contests, “Hots & Pops” events and more. Three local stores were recognized for going above and beyond, including the Mt. Read store that more than doubled its total compared to last year. In a ceremony held the evening of November 30 at Hilton High School auditorium, 21 students were inducted into the Hispanic Honor Society and French Honor Society. “Our goal in creating a Hilton chapter of these honor societies was to recognize this prestigious group of students who has shown a deep interest in other languages and cultures,” said Michele Ariola, Hispanic Honor Society advisor. It’s worth mentioning that there isn’t a centralized reporting system, and some veterinarians may not self-report, making it difficult to provide a conclusive assessment of the situation.

As the holiday season approaches, some dog parents are on edge as a potentially new canine respiratory disease has been affecting many states throughout the U.S. Since early summer, veterinarians across the country are noticing an uptick of respiratory illnesses in dogs. According to Assistant Professor of Veterinary Science at Cornell University, Patrick Carney, there have been two separate syndromes affecting dogs that may or may not be related. “The first is just a cough that lasts longer than we typically expect it to,” said Carney. “Then the second is severe pneumonia that often starts by a cough and then progresses to pneumonia. Some of the illnesses last a long time and some progress very very quickly.” The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine is investigating the canine respiratory syndrome that has been spreading across the country. According to Cornell, “Veterinarians across the country are reporting an increased incidence of cases of canine respiratory disease that do not respond to the regular treatment protocols. Affected dogs experience a longer and more severe disease course than what is typical for canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) complex. The common pathogen has not yet been discovered.” According to Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, Director of Pet Health Information at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in New York City, “There are many known viruses and bacterium that can cause canine infectious respiratory diseases. The concern of some veterinary professionals is that no known organism was detected in fifty percent of the sick dogs that were tested. Thirty percent were detected as having more than one organism isolated, making this a very complex disease.” Currently, there is no evidence that this respiratory disease is zoonotic or capable of spreading to other species of animals or humans. Canine respiratory diseases commonly spread through direct contact, from dog to dog, through water droplets from sneezing and coughing, or via fomites (contaminated objects and surfaces). Cornell recommends that concerned dog parents avoid high-risk situations for their dog, such as boarding kennels, dog parks, and doggy day care facilities and places when they are unsure about the health status of other dogs in those environments. As a precaution, it is also recommended that dog parents don’t share dog bowls, toys, or doggy chews between dogs outside of the household. Make sure your dog is up to date on their routine vaccinations. Check with your veterinarian if you have concerns and are unsure of when your dog was last routinely vaccinated. Through a rapid response research project funded by the Riney Canine Health Center, the project is based at the Cornell Animal Health Diagnostic Center. This grant supports diagnostic testing on a limited number of acute cases but does not support the treatment of sick dogs. Please contact your local veterinarian when your dog is sick. FASNY highlights how fast ‘decking the halls’ can turn into a devastating fire Although Christmas tree fires may not be common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be extremely serious and cause a lot of damage. Fires involving fresh Christmas trees tend to be more common than artificial tree fires. That’s in part because fresh Christmas trees dry out over time, making them more flammable the longer they’re in the home; a dried-out Christmas tree will burn much more quickly than a well-watered one. Fire departments responded to an annual average of 160 home structure fires caused by Christmas trees between 2016 and 2020, resulting in

two civilian deaths, 11 civilian injuries, and $12 million in direct property damage. With New York State leading the nation in home fire deaths at 142 deaths in 2023, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges residents to stay vigilant and hydrate all natural Christmas trees. Also to take the extra steps needed when decorating and properly using seasonal and holiday candles, decorative lighting and electric cords to ensure your ‘winter wonderland’ doesn’t turn into a devastating house fire. “As we enjoy the Holiday Season, FASNY urges all New Yorkers to take the extra steps when decorating to ensure their homes, offices, schools, and other gathering spaces are safe and free of preventable fire hazards,” said Edward Tase Jr., President, Firefighters Association of the State of New York. “Carefully decorating your home can help make your holidays safer and merrier,” said President Tase. FASNY recommends the following tips: •For a fresh tree, cut two inches from the base of the trunk before placing it in the stand. Add water daily to keep the tree well hydrated.

•Trees should be placed at least three feet away from any heat source, such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lights. •Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit, such as a door or window. •Ensure that decorative lights are in good working order and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Also, the latest statistics from NFPA on Christmas tree fires in US homes include these key findings, reflecting annual averages between 2016 and 2020: •Christmas tree fires are more common between 3 p.m. and midnight, accounting for one-half of associated fires. Another 26 percent of fires occurred between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. •Approximately two of every five home Christmas tree fires started in the living room, family room, or den. •Electrical failures or malfunctions were factors in more than one-third (34 percent) of Christmas tree fires. •In one-fifth (20 percent) of Christmas tree fires, some type of heat source was placed too close to the tree. Patricia worked at GE until the factory closure. She went back to MCC where she graduated magna cum laude with an associate’s degree in Medical Records Technology. She worked for Park Ridge Hospital and retired from Lakeside Hospital. She loved Disney, Christmas, animals, anything sparkly, and most importantly a good laugh. In addition to his work as an engineer, he began teaching, first at the Rochester Institute of Technology and then at the University of Rochester where as an adjunct professor he taught generations of young people the joys of engineering over almost 40 years.He was named Teacher of the Year for the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Rochester in 1995. In 2006 he was honored by IEEE for “outstanding leadership, creativity, hard work and inspiration in the field of engineering for almost half a century”. He was so inspired by his students, the engineers of the future, that he did not retire from teaching until he was just short of 80 and even then, he did so reluctantly. Marion L. Marshall Holley: Marion L. (Babcock) Marshall, age 96, passed away following a short illness on December 11, 2023. Spencerport recognizes Devonish and winning sports teams At a meeting on December 6, the Spencerport Village Board honored Simon Devonish for his contribution to the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum as Director over the last six years. They also recognized three Spencerport High School sports teams for their accomplishments – girls soccer, boys volleyball, and girls swim and dive. Kendall girls basketball undefeated through first six games by Warren Kozireski With a brand-new head coach and starting only one senior, Kendall became the first team in Section V to win six games this season. Lucian Price came to the program as head coach after 16 years in Albion and is getting contributions from virtually the entire team as they average 41 points per game on offense while allowing only 25 points per game. The Eagles can attack the basket in multiple ways with senior Danielle Offhaus and junior Ava LeMay inside, along with the outside shooting from sophomore point guard Brooke Rodas, freshman Addison Kludt, plus sophomores Alea Barrett and Stella Kwiatek. “I think we’re working a lot more as a team,” Offhaus said. “Our new coach really knows how to handle us and knows how to bring us all together; he’s forced a lot of energy on us, and it’s just been a great environment. “We’re strong both in and out and we’re well-rounded this year – it’s been great.” “We work together, and we hype each other up; we bring each other up if someone’s down,” LeMay added. Kendall finished 3-8 in the shortened 202122 season and 6-14 last year before falling in the first round of the Section V playoffs as the tenth seed. Not a single Eagle was listed this

season as a Player to Watch on the All-Greater Rochester preseason list. But that has not deterred this group. The Eagles have the player skill set to push the ball up the court with speed offensively and then trap press defensively. Evidence was their win over Holley December 12 with six different players scoring points and multiple players hauling down rebounds and getting steals. “I think the key for these kids is just being able to have that energy and effort every single game,” Price said. “They’re very athletic and they’re smart kids, they just have to play with confidence. “The inside-outside is good because I think they feed off of each other. The guards do a good job of looking for the post, and the post do a good job of kicking it back out if that’s what’s available. “It’s tough getting used to someone new. The first couple of weeks were kind of hard for them getting used to having someone new there, and kids are kids and will hesitate to trust you, and I think it’s starting to build now...and I’m excited for them to play the teams that are known for being some of the better teams in the league. “So far, my favorite part of this group is how they seem to get along and that’s they’re just

Provided photo. unselfish and they’re trying to complement each other.” Kendall girls basketball has never won a Section V title, but have won seven Genesee Region league titles in history with the last coming in 2004-05.

But their 6-0 start has them at least dreaming big. “It’s my last year and I’m one of the only seniors…to stick it out, and I really want that before I leave and I want to see them (her teammates) get there,” Offhaus stated.

The 2023 Induction Ceremony will be held at Hilton High School on Thursday, December 28 at 4:30 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. All members of the Hilton Athletic Hall of Fame and community members are invited to attend the presentation of inductees in the high school auditorium. Pole vaulters set stage at Nazareth Alumni Classic; King breaks own record One week after her first record-breaking performance, pole vaulter Brynn King again set a new mark for NCAA Division II and the Roberts Wesleyan track and field program. King won the event at the Nazareth Alumni Classic with a clearance of 4.42 meters (14feet 6-inches) to beat out her height from last week by half an inch. Joining King in an outstanding pole vault performance was Melia Couchman. The freshman hit the NCAA provisional standard by clearing 3.75 meters (12 feet 3-1/2 inches). Couchman is now third all time in Roberts history behind King and Jenn Suhr. On the track, Hailee Lowe was a secondplace finisher in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.38. Demar Osbourne was the highest finisher for the men’s team taking third place in the shot put. The junior had a toss of 13.88-meters (45-feet 6-1/2-inches).

Older adults can enroll to receive personalized community outreach Over 63,000 older New Yorkers in 19 counties – including Monroe and Genesee – are enrolled in a program to receive instantaneous communications from local offices for the aging about weather events, program benefit application deadlines, event reminders, surveys, and other important notifications thanks to a partnership between the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA), the Association on Aging in New York (AgingNY), and Blooming Health. The partnership began in September 2022 and is now being extended through September 2024 so that additional counties can opt-in and scale up their community outreach capabilities for benefit programs like the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), as well as time-sensitive information like weather or scheduling updates. NYSOFA Director Greg Olsen said, “NYSOFA is pleased to continue our partnership with Blooming Health and help local offices for the aging in their efforts to scale up community engagement efforts in ways that reflect the diversity of available communications methods and preferences. Thanks to this partnership, agencies can help even more individuals who may not have realized they were eligible for – or needed to renew – benefits that can help them pay for food or lower their out-of-pocket costs. Older adults are also able to receive broadcasts to help them prepare for extreme

weather events or simply learn about an upcoming program that can keep them engaged in their communities through health and wellness or social opportunities. We are thrilled about the outcomes – including a 300 percent increase in social engagement and a 500 percent increase in access to SNAP benefits.” Blooming Health is designed to improve older adults’ awareness and connection to community-based aging services via an inclusive, digital engagement platform. Targeted communications are sent via text message, landline voice calls, emails, and in an older adult’s preferred language (including English and over 69 non-English options). So far, older adults have received over 600,000 messages from Area Agencies on Aging notifying them with: •Emergency weather alerts and broadcasts for community nutrition programs. •Event reminders for evidence-based programs, nutrition education, vaccination clinics, and wellness programs. •Surveys to assess client satisfaction with personal care aides, home-delivered meals, and other programs. •Wellness check-ins to identify clients’ social and health needs, and navigate them to relevant support services. •Reminders to test devices such as personal emergency response systems.

•Application reminders for programs like HEAP or SNAP to ensure that individuals get timely access to important benefits. Clients do not need broadband internet or a smart device to receive these communications. Providers can also receive longitudinal data on clients’ needs and outcomes, coordinate care, and better manage their population’s health risks. In addition, agencies have been more easily able to screen clients for social determinants of health, such as food insecurity, financial insecurity, and transportation needs to provide them with appropriate support. For its existing clients, Blooming Health has contributed to a three-fold increase in older adult engagement with provider services while saving two hours per day in outreach capacity for program staff and garnering an 85 percent satisfaction rate for older adult end-users. Genesee County is receiving $30 million in Bond Act funding as the third phase of the drinking water supply project. This initiative will aim to upgrade the infrastructure in the region and help to improve the systems throughout the community. On Friday, December 8, the Town of Ogden held its second annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Residents enjoyed hot chocolate provided by Union Street Coffee House and festive treats and baked goods donated by Tops Friendly Market, Tim Hortons and Wegmans. Christmas carols were sung throughout the evening by the Robert Dean Chorale and kids enjoyed a chance to see Santa as he made a special appearance as part of the Spencerport Fire Department’s annual Santa Runs.
