OFC’s Old Farm Cafe offers Immersive Theatrical Dining experience by Barbara Burke photos by Karen Fien Looking for an innovative Dinner Theatre experience? In August 2022, OFC Creations Theatre Center opened their Old Farm Cafe, 3450 Winton Place, Rochester, 14623. The Old Farm Cafe is open to the public for breakfast, lunch and later, and provides a one-of-a-kind adventure in dining and theatre. The Old Farm Cafe concept comes from the imagination of OFC’s Executive Director and Founder, Eric Vaughn Johnson. The restaurant is another step in Johnson’s dream to, “Find ways to make common life activities into memories that will last a lifetime.” Johnson partnered with artistic designer, Jack Haldoupis, to make OFC’s first expansion a reality. Johnson previously worked with Haldoupis on the Eddie Money original stage show production held at the Kodak Center for Performing Arts. Haldoupis is the former artistic director of the Blackfriars Theatre and has worked for over 40 years in theatre set design, production and direction.
Award-winning director, Eric Vaughn Johnson, Executive Director and Founder of OFC Creations Theatre, brought his unique dinner theatre dream to life in the Old Farm Cafe. The farm theme for the restaurant came about when Johnson was looking for something truly unique. “We needed a space for our students, teachers and parents Custom designed animatronics from Luna’s Puppets in Washington to grab a coffee and some food,” Johnson said. They then state greet and entertain diners as part of the farm experience. decided to open up the restaurant to the community as a unique restaurant for a daily dining experience. According the their website, “Blending great food with a unique theatrical experience, guests will be immediately transported to a captivating and calming barnyard, giving you the feeling of enjoying a sunny summer day, no matter the actual Rochester weather.” Every surface, including the floor, in the 3,000 square foot restaurant was hand painted by Haldoupis. Mesmerizing colors, greenery, farm implements, farm memorabilia, early morning sounds, and animatronics add to the ambience. The animatronics of two chickens, an owl and a rabbit, were custom designed by Luna’s Puppets out of Washington state. The Cafe is managed by “Head Farmer,” Sarah Trine, a native of Upstate New York who has been working in area kitchens and theatres for the past 16 years. Sarah is proud and excited to join the OFC family. She loves honing her natural culinary skills. She specializes in menu planning, catering, and indulging a community’s love of great food. When she’s not tending to her menagerie of animals at home, including a small cast of chickens, she can be found gardening fresh ingredients or testing new recipes. OFC students and graduates round out the Old Farm Cafe staff. The Farm Cafe menu lists a wide variety of beverages, including specialty coffee and tea, espresso, and blended beverages, all with farm themed names like When Pigs Fly Chai, Flew the Coop Cappuccino, Red-Eyed Rooster and the Wonky Donky Cooler. Food offerings for breakfast, brunch, lunch and later include choices for vegetarian and vegan diets. They include Open Faced Avocado Breakfast Sandwich, Flatbread Pizzas, Soup du Jour, Salads, Hummus Plates, Wraps and more. The space is also available to rent for private parties, weddings, birthdays, corporate parties and get-togethers of all types. The restaurant can accommodate up to 160 people. There is an attached additional 3,000 square feet of space called Studio B. This space can be made to accommodate wedding ceremonies, bridal party preparation, cocktail hour or whatever is needed to create an onsite total experience. Growth habit refers to the form or shape that a plant takes. Terms such as rounded, pyramidal, columnar, and vase-shaped all refer to the growth habit of a plant. Growth habits are primarily determined by genetics and have a functional component. Plant breeders must consider growth habit when developing new cultivars. The upright growth habit of hydrangeas, for example, must be strong enough to support the weight of massive blooms that a plant breeder and, eventually, a customer might prefer. Plants have adapted their growth habits over time in response to environmental, climate, and other factors. Things like water, nutrients, light, and space availability, especially during the growing season, have enhanced adaptive growth forms in plants. Wood is an example of a mechanism developed by plants to help fight against the destructive effects of wind, ice, mechanical damage, and fire. Dense growth habits help protect against wind. Some plants without wood have adapted prostrate, mat-forming, spreading, creeping, or climbing habits. Animals have also impacted the growth habit of plants. Mat-forming and prostrate growth habits help plants endure grazing and trampling, while tall growth habits also help foil browsing and grazing. Here are examples of some of the various forms of plant growth habits: •Climbing plants, which can be found in forests and woodlands, include vines with stems that trail along or coil around other plants or structures as they grow upward. Grape vine and morning glory are examples of climbing plants.
•Clump-forming plants have an aggregate of several shoots growing in a bunch from a common base - especially in grasses and sedges that are common in the prairies of the United States. •Dense plants have many small, woody canes or stems that grow upright and very close together. Most shrubs have a dense growth habit. •Erect plants, which are typical in woodlands and forests, include trees, which have a main stem that grows in an upright fashion above ground level. •Mat-forming plants, which can be found in places like grasslands, bogs, wetlands, and cultivated habitats, have creeping stems that grow in a trail along soil or water surfaces and spread out to produce a mat-like cover. Included in this growth habit are crabgrass and Sphagnum moss. •Mound-forming plants have a rounded shape, such as cactus. •Open plants have upright woody stems or canes and include willows and bamboos. •Prostrate plants have stems that grow flat on the soil surface and include some species of juniper. •Scandent plants like blackberry and sugarcane have prominent stems in a leaning position. •Spreading plants have a sprawling growth habit and include Sumacs, ferns, and blueberries. •Stemless plants have no visible stem above ground and are composed mainly of leaves or leaf-like structures. The common dandelion is an example. Late fall and winter are great times to observe growth habits in your landscape, as many plants drop their leaves. You can add structural winter interest to your landscape by being aware of the growth habit of the plants you choose.
