Brockport High School principal resigns The Brockport Board of Education accepted the resignation of Dr. Brian Weller, Brockport High School Principal, during the December 3 board meeting. Dr. Weller will be taking a personal leave and will continue that leave until his resignation date of January 31, 2020.

Melody Martinez-Davis became the Brockport High School principal effective December 9. Mrs. MartinezDavis has worked for the district for the past 12 years.

She previously served as Brockport High School’s assistant principal before being appointed as the principal at Oliver Middle School (OMS) in 2009.

Jerrod Roberts, OMS Assistant Principal, is now the acting principal for OMS through June 30, 2020, while a search begins. An acting/interim assistant principal for OMS will be named shortly.

Christmas Care Packages Are on the Way! As many of you may know, each year we send the proceeds of our annual Halloween Candy Buy Back to Operation Gratitude, an all volunteer organization that assembles individual care packages which are then sent to our troops overseas.

Those items are currently being put to use as thousands of packages are shipped overseas just in time for Christmas. Each package sent contains a collection of personal items, candy, and a note from home and each one is addressed and delivered to a specific serviceman or woman.

This year our local contribution consisted of over 400 pounds of candy plus cases of toothpaste, toothbrushes and other personal items for our troops. “I would like to express my gratitude to all the kids, parents and grandparents who brought in donations, and to all the businesses and individuals who helped make our local efforts such a big success.”

This year we received cash donations from individuals, local businesses and organizations to help with shipping costs.

Sweden’s proposed Telecommunication Code will be amended; second public hearing to be scheduled The Sweden Town Board held a December 10 public hearing regarding its proposed Telecommunications Code. One resident spoke at the brief hearing. The Town Attorney recommended several changes to the draft code and further recommended that a second public hearing be held.

The Telecommunications Code changes deal mainly with large and small cell deployment. Most deployment

will likely be in town-owned rights-of-way, requiring the town to enter into agreements with various wireless companies. The second public hearing on a re-drafted code will likely be scheduled for mid to late January.

Community message The Brockport Police Department wants to remind drivers about the parking limitations now that winter snowstorms are hitting our area. Vehicles that are parked on the street or in closed lots during snowstorms, or the days after, are subject to tow. As a reminder, no vehicle can be parked on any village street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. or in any closed public parking lot.

The reason that vehicles are subject to tow, is so that Brockport DPW can clear the road or the parking lots of all the snow. It is a safety concern when snow is left in an area where a vehicle was parked. To determine if the parking lots are open, refer to the signs that are in each public parking lot. The public parking lots are located at the Brockport Police Department (1 Clinton Street), behind Chase Bank (parking lot between King Street and Erie Street), next to the Frontier Tower (Erie Street Lot), all parking lots on Water Street, and the Brockport Fire Department parking lot (38 Market Street). If anyone has any questions on where you can park on any night, please call 9-1-1 and ask to speak to an available Brockport Police Officer.

Jim Walker of Greece recently celebrated his 104th birthday with his friends and family. Jim has lived most of his life in the Northeast. His life began in 1915 in Orange, New Jersey, and his career led him to the Boston, Massachusetts area where he and his wife raised their family.

When Jim retired, he and his wife of 55 years moved to Cape Cod. After his wife passed away, Jim came to Greece to be close to his daughter Ann. Jim’s career was in the insurance industry, but he also served in the Army for four years during World War II. He wishes more young people would enlist in the military. “It would be good for them and good for our country,” Jim said. He recalls how different it was when he and fellow service members came back from deployment during his era compared to now. “There were no parades or celebrations. We just came home and hung up our uniforms and went to work,” he said.

Jim had the privilege of being part of Honor Flight and went to Washington, DC, to visit the memorials for the different wars. “I was very impressed,” he said.

Jim was an avid golfer up until very recently. He would be out on the golf course three to four times a week, and Sunday was always his day to golf with his wife. Jim continues to be independent and was even driving his car until last year. Over two years, he only put 1,800 miles on his last car, with most of his trips being to Wegmans, doctor appointments, and Best Buy.

Jim has seen some incredible advancements in technology in his 100-plus years. He was born at a time when telephone technology was young, the year of his birth being the year long-distance calling across the country was first invented. Jim grew up in a time where phone calls were rotary dialed with a switchboard operator connecting the two parties. Now, Jim has his own iPhone, on which he likes to text and Facetime his family. According to Jim’s neighbor, MaryAnn Vaccaro, “He is a great conversationalist and is always up to date on news and sports, especially his favorite team, the Yankees.”

Jim enjoys living his golden years in Greece, and he especially likes his neighborhood, Villas of Fieldstone.

“The people here are very nice and helpful. They look out for me. Greece is a delightful community,” he said.

The Town of Greece will be honoring Jim Walker at a Proclamation Ceremony in December.

Hilton’s eighth grade band takes part in master class On December 5, the eighth grade band at Hilton’s Merton Williams Middle School had the rare opportunity to participate in a master class with Composer Steve Danyew. Mr. Danyew worked with the students on his composition River Town Jubilee in preparation for the band’s winter concert.

“I was first exposed to Mr. Danyew’s music in the summer of 2018 when I was performing his piece Into the Silent Land,” said Kevin Weber, music teacher and band director. “This piece is one of the most powerful and emotional performances I have been a part of in my music career.”

Danyew grew up in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, and attended Sandy Hook Elementary School. “I believe that music is one way we can remember the victims of the tragedy, their families, and victims of similar tragedies,” said Danyew. “Into the

Silent Land was the hardest piece I have written, but I hope that the music allows listeners to pause and remember these victims, and come together to prevent this kind of violence in the future.”

Into the Silent Land was named the winner of the 2019 Walter Beeler Memorial Composition Prize and has been hailed as “startlingly beautiful” and “undeniably well crafted and communicative” by the Miami Herald.

In addition to composing, Danyew is a passionate educator at the Eastman School of Music’s Institute for Music Leadership, who teaches courses focused on helping young musicians craft their own creative careers.

The Merton Williams Instrumental Winter Concert is Wednesday, December 18 at 7 p.m. in the Hilton High School auditorium.

Monroe County 4-H celebrates end of year achievements The Monroe County 4-H Program celebrated the end of the 2018-2019 4-H program year at its annual 4-H Achievement Day. 4-H Members gathered at Seneca Park Zoo to be recognized for their hard work while having fun with other club members. Recognition is an important component of the 4-H experience. Youth and leaders work incredibly hard in their programs, dedicating countless hours to projects, clubs, and the community.

Recognition celebrates these accomplishments while increasing young people’s interest in future opportunities that are available to them.

At the event, teens Rose Lanzatella, Beatrix Freeman, Maddi Bassett, and Clara Whilden were recognized for their teen leadership skills. They received scholarships to attend the State Teen Action Representative Retreat (STARR) in April of 2020. They will gather with other youth across New York State to participate in a variety of workshops and activities meant to challenge, excite, and further develop their leadership skills.

The Junior Achievement youth, Addie Whilden, Alyssa Bassett, and Brianna Tindall, were recognized for being exemplary leaders in their club and community. Cloverbud Willa Freeman was also recognized for outstanding participation.

These youth are shining a light into the future.

The Posh Ponies Club was recognized for their extensive community service activities as well as exemplary project work. This club completed 19 service activities in the 2018-2019 program year, exceeding their goal of 12. Members served dinner at REACH homeless

In 1976 I graduated from The Pennsylvania College of Optometry, with a degree as Doctor of Optometry. I knew I wanted a “family” practice and so I started a practice from “scratch” in the Village of Hilton at the age of 28, with the help of my loving wife and family support. I spent the first 5 years, from 1976-1981, at the Village II Plaza on South Avenue. I then purchased the home at 50 East Avenue and have since enjoyed building a family-oriented practice. Dr. Fryer joined the practice in 1991 and now owns the practice. He will carry on with the same high level of care you are accustomed to receiving. I now have a date of January 1, “2020” as my target date for full retirement. (No pun intended!)

I have enjoyed the work I do, and more importantly, have enjoyed the many families that I have gotten to know. I have seen 3 generations of several families...getting to know them and sharing many of life’s joys and sorrows that tend to be thrown our way. I got to experience their growth and shared many stories of their lives and many know the stories of my life, as well as my career. Thank you for letting me be a part of your family and for being a friend. I consider myself a simple man. Life was never about the money or fame, but about what you leave behind. Our life is our own personal history. Thank you for being part of mine.

I will miss the sharing of families and the desire to give the best of vision care to each and every patient. But with time and age, I had to realize it was time to turn a new page in my life. I will miss all that I have to leave behind, but am so grateful for the career and experiences that 43+ years of practice has given me.

Retiring is one of the hardest obstacles for me, but I realize it is time. Time to be grateful for my past and look forward to my future with my beautiful wife, family, friends and memories to be made with my grandkids.

Unity Hospital recognized nationally for surgical patient care outcomes The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) has recognized Unity Hospital as one of 88 out of 592 eligible hospitals that have achieved meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2018. Unity Hospital is the only hospital in the Rochester area to be recognized.

•Ferris, Francis X., died November 30, 2019, at age 92. Frank was predeceased by his wife of 64 years Mary E. (Honey) Ferris, and is survived by his children Timothy Ferris of Cumberland, Maine; Elizabeth Ferris of Falls Church, Virginia; Daniel (Monica) Ferris of East Greenwich, Rhode Island; Patrick (Mariluz) Ferris of Amherst, New York; grandchildren Jonathan, Andrew, Rachel, Crispin, Anna-Marie, Emilie, Joseph, John and Michael Ferris; sisters-in-law Mary Ferris and Maryann Ferris of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews. After two years of teaching at Letchworth School District in Castile, Frank spent 38 years in the Spencerport Central School System as an English teacher and as the district’s first Director of Reading, retiring in 1991. He pioneered a model K-12 reading program that assured each child was able to read grade-appropriate material and helped lay the basis for Spencerport Central School’s Effective Schools Project.

Lost Lightning Eagles win Innovative Solution Award Kendall’s FIRST® LEGO® League team, the Lost Lightning Eagles, brought home the Innovative Solution Award from the Finger Lakes Championship event held on December 8 at the University of Rochester. This award recognizes a team’s solution that is exceptionally well-considered and creative, with good potential to solve the problem researched. The team created the www. kendallreads.com website to help encourage literacy in Kendall.

Members of the team are: Alek King, Carter Alt, Cody Johnstone, Caleb Schneider, Caleb Schumacher, Robert Henry, Alek Odalovic, Dominic Dellaquila, Seth Pray and Madison Hults.

This award came at the end of a challenging day of competition for the team. They endured multiple setbacks with their robot throughout the day, including a failing gyro sensor during their presentation and first match, and a broken motor during their second match. However, the team showed tremendous grit and a growth mindset as they found solutions to each problem. They replaced sensors and motors, rebuilt the robot twice, and tweaked the code to compensate for the changes, resulting in a score of 245 points (up from 185 points in their last tournament).

When asked during judging for one word to describe the team, they answered: determined. The team was determined to improve their robot and strategy this

“I am extremely humbled by their determination, and I know that these kids will go on to do amazing things,” said Coach Jackie Nielsen.

Have yourself a merry plant-scented Christmas

by Kristina Gabalski The wonderful spicy and sweet scents that are so much a part of our holiday celebrations all come to us from plants.

Whether it be gifts, decorations, or foods, plants play a big part in our holiday celebrations. Think of all the wonderful aromas we enjoy at this time of year. It may be cold, dark, and dank outside, but inside are warm scents of spices, citrus, mint, and pine.

Here is a bit of background on some of the plants and plant parts that add so much to our holidays and help to make them so memorable.

Evergreens play a big roll in both interior and exterior decoration during the holidays and there is nothing like the scent of fresh cut pine, spruce, and fir. Evergreens were first brought into homes at this time of year as a sign of life during the darkest time of the year.

Evergreens are used for Christmas trees, and balsam fir has an especially good reputation for its fresh, piney scent. Even if you don’t have a real Christmas tree, you can still use fresh cut evergreens for centerpieces, garlands, and swags. Just a small amount can go a long way and make a beautiful and aromatic statement in your home.

What would the holidays be without fresh citrus which comes into season just in time for our celebrations. Oranges look amazing with evergreens as a decoration and their peels can be used in potpourri.

Look for kumquats, lemons, limes, and grapefruit in addition to oranges to add color and fresh scents to your home this holiday.

The scent of spices in holiday baked goods is such a big part of this time of year. Baking with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and anise fills the kitchen and home with warm, enticing, and exotic scents. Warm spiced ciders and wassails also smell delicious when set out for special meals and parties. These spices come from various parts of plants.

Anise (Pimpinella anisum) also known as aniseed, comes from the Mediterranean and southwest Asia and has a

licorice flavor and scent. It is a flowering plant and resembles dill with large, umbrella shaped flowers and seed heads.

You can try growing aniseed in your own garden. Star anise is not related to aniseed and is a seedpod from an evergreen tree, Illicium verum. Native to China, star anise makes a great addition to potpourri with its beautiful, eight-pointed star shape.

Cinnamon is a well-known and flavorful spice with an amazing scent. It is the inner bark of several tree species from the genus Cinnamomum, which are evergreen trees native to India, Indonesia and China. The inner bark is pried off after the outer bark is removed and as it dries, it curls into long rolls.

Cloves are the flower buds of an evergreen in the myrtle family named Syzygium aromaticum. The plant is native to Indonesia and has a strong scent and flavor. If you have ever smelled a carnation, it has a clove scent. Cloves are a component of pumpkin and apple pie spices and whole cloves are used to make pomanders by inserting them into the rinds of whole oranges and other citrus fruits. Cloves are harvested when flower buds are about 3/4 inches long.

Another holiday spice favorite is nutmeg, popular in spice blends and in eggnog. Nutmeg is the seed of Myristica fragrans, an evergreen tree which grows in Indonesia. If you have ever had mace, it is a spice made from the reddish covering of the nutmeg seed, called the aril.

Mace is not as strong as nutmeg.

Finally, let’s not forget about mints.

You might enjoy growing mint in your home garden and using it fresh during the summer. Peppermint especially is associated with the holidays as bright red and white candy canes and other festive hard candies are often flavored with peppermint. The scent is very refreshing.

Mint family plants can be identified by their stems, which have a square cross section. If you do grow mint, it can be aggressive. Planting in pots can help keep mint contained.

Chuck Colby, President of the Kiwanis Club of Spencerport, presents a check to Maureen Granger, longtime co-chair of the Cartons for Christmas effort in Spencerport, following her annual presentation to the Kiwanis Club on Cartons for Christmas. There were 144 referrals for inclusion for 2019 including 77 who had been recipients in 2018. Many local organizations are involved in the effort including Boy and Girl Scout Troops, Spencerport High School honor society members, children from Cosgrove School, and local businesses who have toy trees in their place of business.

GCV&M wraps up the season with Holiday Open House As the year comes to a close, Genesee Country Village & Museum throws open the doors one last time in 2019 for their Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 21 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. On this day, the holidays will be in full swing around the village, including a tree-lighting, tastings of seasonal foods like plum cake and mincemeat, and even a visit with St. Nick. Guests will learn about the origins of traditional holiday decorations like the “kissing ball” and can visit

village homes including the Hyde House, which was featured as part of the Sweet Creations Gingerbread Display at Eastman Museum. Light lunch fare will be available throughout the afternoon, and visitors can purchase village-baked treats at the D.B. Munger & Co. Confectionery.

Tickets for Holiday Open House are $10 adult general admission, $8 GCV&M members, $8 youth general admission (ages 3-17), and $6 GCV&M member youth. Children under 3 are free.

Visitors can complete their Holiday Open House visit with GCV&M’s traditional Yuletide Dinner, available that evening from 4 to 8 p.m. This year’s festive menu includes roasted turkey, smoked bone-in ham, Italian wedding soup, tasty side dishes and freshly-baked desserts.

Separate reservations for Yuletide Dinner are required: $30 adults, $18 youth 2-10, and youth one and under are free. Reservations can be made by calling 294-8218 or on the website at www.gcv.org.

Genesee Country Village & Museum’s Flint Hill Store will be open during all holiday season events and is stocked with unique, handmade gifts including pottery hand-thrown in the Historic Village, maple syrup, candy, and maple cream from the Museum’s own sugarbush, as well as other artisan goods handmade on site. The Genesee County 4-H Program is now accepting registrations for the 2020 4-H Tractor Safety Program.

The program is open to youth age 14 and over and covers farm safety, tractor safety, tractor operation, and other related topics.

The National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program is a certification program that allows youth age 14 and 15 to be certified to legally operate farm equipment for hire. After completing the training course, youth will need to pass a written knowledge test and driving test to receive the certification.

The program is scheduled to run Saturdays, 8 a.m. to Noon, January through March at farm machinery dealerships throughout Genesee County. The fee for the program is $10 and youth must also be currently enrolled 4-H members. Registrations are due January 24, 2020.

Hilton fifth graders go on camera with Denver Museum of Nature and Science Did you know that every time you enjoy a meal of chicken, duck, or turkey, you are actually enjoying some delicious dinosaur? Annmarie Young’s fifth grade class at Village Elementary School in Hilton recently took an interactive role in learning how every bird alive today, from ostrich to oriole, pigeon to penguin, is a descendant of the theropod dinosaur, like the T. Rex and Velociraptor. The class was selected to be an interactive classroom in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s Scientist in Action Program “From T-Rex to Turkey” on November 20.

The program is designed to give students live access to scientists in the field and research labs. Young’s class is one of only a couple of hand-selected classes to be on camera and ask the scientists questions. Other students from around the country were able to watch the program via Skype and ask questions via the chat feature.

Student questions guided the exploration into evolution with Dr. Joe Sertich, paleontologist, and Dr. Garth Spellman, ornithologist. Audrey Phillips and Colton Ralyea asked their question on camera, “What is the most fascinating resemblance between dinosaurs and birds that you have found?” Evalyn Adams and Kara Brone appeared on camera with the question, “Have you found any genetic similarities between birds and dinosaurs?”

Students around the country viewed fossils, natural history collections and specimens as if they were actually in the museum. Locally, the opportunity was made possible through the Monroe 2 BOCES Distance Learning Program, which uses technology so students can talk with experts, visit distance places and learn digital citizenship.

New holiday musical brings generations together OFC Creations is bringing a brand new musical comedy, Wrapping Around the Christmas Tree, to the Lyric Theatre Main Stage from December 20 to 22.

Wrapping Around the Christmas Tree pokes fun at the holiday season with parody Christmas tunes, original songs, and some old fashioned favorites. The story follows frugal folks at Northview Shopping Center wrapping presents, singing songs, and harkening holiday high jinks. But this year, there are two groups that want to open up a present wrapping station: Cresthill Middle School, and the kooky ladies at Cozy Times Senior Community. The ribbons unravel as the brainiacs take on the spunky grandmas in a wrap-off, all alongside the antics of a helicopter mom, a zany mall cop, and Saint Nicholas himself.

Originally conceived and directed by Eric Vaughn Johnson, the show is loosely based on real life events with a message of acceptance, love, and different generations coming together to work as one. Johnson enlisted longtime OFC performer and collaborator, Charlie Harrington, to write the script and lyrics.

The cast features well-known Rochester performers as well as many OFC students. Leading the show as the Cozy Times Seniors are Diane Chevron as Ida, Marge Mattioli as Bertha, and Sarah Reynolds as Edna. The competing middle schoolers are Marco DeAscentiis as Grant, Rachel Stoner as Penny, and Will Belecz as Lucas. Rounding out the cast is Dresden Engle as Darcy the stage mom, Peter Elliott as Santa Claus, Zoe Vidmar as Susannah the elf, Nicolas Samper as Tom the Mall Cop, and Nancy Meister, Donna Carpino, Hunter Ekberg, Allison Snarr, Blakely Odden, Silvia Labrosa Witmer, and Kassie Robinson in the ensemble.

“We had been searching for the perfect holiday show for Rochester audiences and realized we needed to write it ourselves,” said Johnson, OFC Executive Director.

The Ogden Police Department welcomed Officer Erique Gomez and appointed him as the new DARE Officer for the Spencerport Central School District. Officer Gomez has served with the Rochester Police Department since 2004, after transferring from the NYPD. He also served in the United States Marine Corps. Officer Gomez has worked as a Crime Prevention Officer and police instructor. He is fluent in Spanish and has worked extensively with neighborhood groups and in school settings.

The idea for the event, called Bells & Badges, came from the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police.

Canalway Challenge participants trace history and track 285,000 miles People from 26 states and Canada walked, ran, cycled, and paddled their way to fitness and fun this year as part of the new Canalway Challenge, launched by the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor in May. More than 1,279 individuals, 267 teams, and 30 organizations signed on. Participants completed 285,000 miles on the Canalway Trail and NYS Canal System, the equivalent of circling the globe 11 times.

“The Canalway Challenge brought people to every part of the Canalway Corridor. Most participants took multiple trips and visited new communities, historic sites, and local businesses, resulting in increased tourism and improved awareness of all that New York’s canals offer,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

In addition to meeting a fitness goal of 15, 90, 180, or 360 miles, participants expressed excitement about exploring new places, spending time with friends and family, and seeing wildlife while on the waterway and Canalway Trail. A number of participants reached profound new personal milestones -- coming back from cancer, discovering needed connections to nature, becoming physically active, and overcoming obstacles.

New York State Executive Director of Tourism Ross D. Levi said, “The Erie Canal is a valuable tourism asset for New York State, and the Canalway Challenge provided so many people with new ways to experience

the canal and its surrounding communities, making it more likely they will plan return visits and expanded canal-based getaways.”

Participant Meg K. logged 180 miles during the Canalway Challenge. “We have passed through New York’s heartland, gliding, biking, and hiking near historic quaint canal towns, scenic farmlands, and thriving wildlife preserves. The canal joins attractions both modern and historic, so there’s something new around every bend, every turn…The Erie Canal is an experience of discovery! How awesome is that!”

IJC and Board release presentation on water levels The International Joint Commission (IJC) and the International Lake Ontario – St. Lawrence River Board (Board) have released a joint presentation on water levels in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

The presentations explain how Lake Ontario outflows are regulated when inflows to the lake and St. Lawrence River are extremely high and what can reliably be done to reduce coastal damages. They also explain the IJC and the Board’s role and the limits of what regulation can do in extraordinary circumstances.

The Interact Club and Holley High School Student Council are running a collection drive for their first Day of Caring in December. They are collecting needed items for Elderwood of Lakeside, PAWS Animal Shelter and Holley Community Center.

Needed items for Elderwood include Bingo prizes, Bath & Body Works items, scented lotions and bath products, notebooks, pens and pencils, knick knacks, adult coloring books, jewelry, and new stuffed animals.

PAWS needs donations of Safe Paws cat litter, laundry soap, Lysol, antibacterial cleaner, dryer sheets, bleach, blankets, rock salt, and Pine Sol.

Donations may be dropped off to the Elementary School and Middle School/High School Main Offices.

Collection ends on December 20 so that students may deliver collected items on December 23.
