Zale expressed that, “It is difficult to summarize in a few words the impact Chief Mears has had on our community for the last 27 years. We are truly indebted to him, and want to acknowledge his exemplary career, commitment to public safety, and influential leadership. So while we are sad to see him retire from the Ogden Police Department, there is no one more suited to serve as security director for Spencerport Central School District. I am thrilled to see he will continue playing an active role in our community and am excited to continue working with him in this new position.” Chief Mears fills a newly-created position in the district, as part of the 2022-23 budget approved by Spencerport voters in May. Previously, the district contracted for a security director with an outside firm. Chief Mears will collaborate with school principals and district administrators on all security within our buildings and campus, as well as oversee and lead our districtwide initiatives and“I’mresponses.trulygrateful for the opportunity to serve in the Spencerport Central School District, and I’m excited to get started,” Mears said. “My thanks to the board of education and the superintendent for naming me to this position.” Provided information

After 27 years with Ogden Police Department, Chief Chris Mears is retiring from the force next month. File photo. On August 4, Ogden Police Chief Christopher Mears announced his upcoming retirement from the Ogden Police Department. Mears has served in the Ogden Police Department for 27 years. His extensive police career includes serving as a K9 handler from 1999 to 2002 and being promoted to Sergeant in 2006. Mears attended the FBI National Academy Session 239 in 2009 and was named Chief in 2015. Chief Mears’ final day will be on Sunday, September 18. An interim chief will be appointed while the Town conducts interviews for a new chief. “There are no words to adequately describe my gratitude to Chief Mears for his steadfast commitment and service to our town,” said Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Chief Mears demonstrated tremendous leadership and helped us navigate through difficult times. I’m thankful for his friendship and support as I transitioned to the role of Supervisor in January. He has been someone I could depend on, and I’ve always trusted his instincts and dedication to preserving our town’s public safety. “We’ve been privileged to have such a loyal and respected public servant at the head of our local police department. I wish Chief Mears a happy and well-earned retirement and congratulate him on an extraordinary 27-year career with the Ogden Police Department,” concluded Zale. “It has been such an honor to serve as Chief of this amazing group of police officers, civilian staff and volunteers,” said Chief Chris Mears. “I’m grateful to the community for the support I have received, and for the overwhelming support for this Department. I’m looking forward to new challenges and opportunities, but I will dearly miss working with my brother and sister officers and my fellow Chiefs.”

NYSDOT to host public meeting on Route 98 bridge rehabilitation

The New York State Department of Transportation will host a public meeting for an upcoming project to rehabilitate the bridge carrying State Route 98 over the Erie Canal in the Village of Albion. The meeting will be Tuesday, August 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hoag Library, 134 South Main Street, Albion. This will be an open-house style meeting with displays and literature regarding the project. The public has the opportunity to Fly the Ford in Brockport from August 18 through 21. The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) is bringing the first-ever mass produced airliner to Brockport’s Ledgedale Airpark August 18 through 21, and the public is invited to take a flight. The Ford Tri-Motor 5-AT flew its first flight on December 1, 1928. It was sold to Transcontinental Air Transport (TAT, the logo that graces the aircraft’s fuselage today) in January 1929 where it became NC9645 and was named City of Wichita. It inaugurated westbound transcontinental commercial air service on July 7, 1929, with sister ship City of Columbus. In April 1931, ownership of the aircraft was transferred to Transcontinental and Western Air (TWA). Here the aircraft helped in the development of TWA’s route system. The aircraft has a storied history, having changed ownership several times. It provided sightseeing tours with Boulder Dam Tours and flew in Honduras and Nicaragua for a time. It was damaged in an accident in January 1954 and put in storage. In July 1964, it was purchased by Nevada’s William F. Harrah of Harrah’s Hotel and Casinos. Harrah began an extensive seven year renovation, bringing the aircraft back to airworthy status and restoring the corrugated skin. The aircraft had its first post-restoration flight in 1971 and flew in Reno several times before being moved to static display as part of Harrah’s automobile collection. After Harrah’s death, parts of his collection, including this aircraft, were auctioned off in June 1986. The Ford has called the Liberty Aviation Museum in Port Clinton, Ohio, its home since 2014. EAA and the Liberty Aviation Museum are working together to showcase the historic aircraft around the country for all to Familiesenjoy.are invited to visit and learn all about the aircraft and the EAA organization. Grief support group offered at St. George’s Church St. George’s Episcopal Church in Hilton is hosting a “Loss, Grief and Healing Support Group” this fall. The meetings provide a safe, confidential environment for healing after the loss of a loved one. All areThiswelcome.eight week series meets in person from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings from September 8 through October 27. Each meeting will include learning through reading and discussion of the book, It’s OKAY That You’re NOT OKAY, as well as sharing and support about personal losses and their effect on one’s daily life. It can be very difficult living with the loss of a loved one. Support groups are a timetested method of help for people struggling with all sorts of difficulties. Grief is experienced in many ways –physical, emotional, and spiritual. Support groups provide a place to recognize that these reactions are part of the journey of grief. Being with other grieving people can reaffirm that one is not going crazy. While every loss is unique, through support groups, one can bask in the support of others who have experienced loss and understand.Formanypeople, a support group can be a break from the loneliness and boredom that often come with grief. While there is no single solution to dealing with loss, members of a support group can offer a range of alternatives. By listening to stories of how others cope with a particular problem, one can find the solution that might work best. Support groups offer two other benefits. They provide hope by providing models that reaffirm that one can survive loss, and participating in a support group can help the griever find new empathy, new understandings, and renewed strengths. St. George’s Episcopal Church is located at 635 Old Wilder Road, Hilton (across from Kelly’s Farm Market). To register, go to https://bit.ly/Griefgroup or call 392-4099. Provided information

CSEA (Civil Service Employees Association), the largest labor union for New York State employees, announced that its members overwhelmingly voted in favor of ratifying a new five-year state contract for more than 52,000 workers representing all four of the union’s executive branch bargaining units. A tentative agreement for the new state contract had been reached in June 2022 between Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration and CSEA’s negotiating team. Electronic voting and paper ballots were tallied during the first week of August, resulting in the passage. Local author’s book now available at Lift Bridge Fair Lady: Memoirs of a County Fair Manager, by local author Frances Tepper, is now available at Lift Bridge Book Shop in Brockport. Tepper was manager of the Monroe County Fair for nearly 20 years during a time when it was a rarity for women to lead a fair organization. In her book, the author writes with humor and candor about the daily life of a woman in this unusual career and about how the Monroe County Fair grew from what was dubbed “an embarrassment to the industry” into one of the most innovative fairs in New York State. Told in anecdotal form with self-deprecating humor, Fair Lady is a laugh-out-loud read. For more information about the author, go to frantepper.net information

Soldiers of the New York Army National Guard stand in formation during the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine Transfer of Authority One hundred and forty Soldiers from the New York Army National Guard’s 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team took charge of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine during a transfer of authority ceremony at the U.S. Army military training base in Grafenwoehr, Germany on August 8. The brigade is headquartered at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base in Syracuse, but the team members come from across New York. The unit mobilized for this mission on July 15, 2022, and trained at Fort Bliss before deploying to TheGermany.NewYork National Guard Soldiers, collectively known as Task Force Orion, will ensure the combat effectiveness of Ukrainian military personnel training on systems and equipment issued under the United States’ Presidential Drawdown Authority. This marks the second time the 27th IBCT has assumed the mission of the Joint Military Training Group-Ukraine, known as JTMG-U for short. This is the first unit to get that mission twice. “It is absolutely great to have [Task Force Orion] back here,” said Brig. Gen. Joseph Hilbert, commander of 7th Army Training Command. “We remember what you did on your previous rotation. You left an impact on all of us here. You left an impact on the Armed Forces of Ukraine that you trained then, and you’ll leave an impact on them that you train now,” he said. Task Force Orion assumed the JMTG-U mission from Task Force Gator, a unit established from the Florida Army National Guard’s 53rd IBCT, which deployed in November 2021 to Combat Training Center-Yavoriv in western Ukraine. Task Force Gator began its mission conducting ongoing multinational partnering and advising operations in order to further develop the Combat Training Center into a selfsufficient, brigade-level combat training center. The unit was ordered to leave Ukraine for Germany in February 2022, prior to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion. Task Force Gator integrated with its JMTG-U parent organization, 7th Army Training Command, to support ongoing training and exercise support activities, including Operation Assure, Deter and Reinforce, conducting missions across Europe in more than 18 locations and 12 different countries.InApril 2022, Task Force Gator reestablished operations in support of the JMTG-U mission, training Ukrainian military personnel in the Grafenwoehr Training Area. “We started this mission in Ukraine, completed an unexpected and hasty move to Grafenwoehr, and worked through a lot of change. But one thing has remained constant: our commitment to Ukraine,” said Col. Jerry Glass, Task Force Gator and 53rd IBCT commander. Since April, more than 1,500 Ukrainian soldiers have been trained on 15 different programs of instruction at the Grafenwoehr Training Area. With the arrival of Task Force Orion, JMTG-U remains postured to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine wherever the mission leads, according to 7th Army Training Commander leaders. against Russian hostilities,” said Col. William Murphy, Task Force Orion commander. “Each one of us understands this and is prepared to take every task assigned with the utmost professionalism and proficiency. We know the urgency of this mission and gravity of what the Ukrainian people have at stake,” Murphy said. Provided information

I would like to commend Clarkson’s Town Clerk, Sue Henshaw, for using her ‘green thumb’ to beautify the property around the Town Hall. The flowers and colors are extraordinary and contribute to improving the overall appearance of the town for residents and visitors alike. On the other hand, it would be great to see our other elected officials in both the Towns of Clarkson and Sweden collaborate to do something to improve the appearance of the traffic circle that borders both towns on the corner of Lake Road and East and West Avenues. The weeds are an eyesore, and it’s pretty shameful for a member of either board to drive by often and not even have an inkling to maybe do something about it. If you watch the Clarkson Town Board meetings on Facebook, many times there are members who have nothing new to contribute, yet their salaries are paid with taxpayer money. A letter like this should not have to be written. You would think they would take more pride in the appearance of the town. Also, the lot next to the post office in Clarkson, which is in the center of the town’s historical district, looks like a used car lot on some days. It has for years. The town owns that property as far as I know, so why they can’t do something with it is another question. Perhaps a memorial space for the cobblestone building that was located there is a good idea. Maybe a couple of benches with flowers and a plaque commemorating its history would enhance the four corners and the historical district. It seems to me when members of one party win elections time after time, they lose their incentive, as indicated by these observations. These are simple, inexpensive ideas that aren’t too difficult to come up with. Let’s all hope they decide to take a little initiative and come up with creative ideas to improve the appearance of our community.
