“Joanne goes above and beyond to make sure her clients find exactly what they’re looking for when shopping for a home. From day one it was very clear to us that she was friendly, knowledgeable and dependable. In one of the toughest times to shop for a home this year, she made sure to still guide us in the right direction and was there for us every step of the way. I would recommend her to anyone, especially first time home buyers.” Tri and Chanmale

by Doug Hickerson Reading my recent emails, I found a letter from Barb Deming with a positive comment about our Brockport Community. I copy it here slightly edited for publication with permission from Barb. Sandy’s last name is deleted for privacy. Sandy tripped and fell on Brockport’s West Avenue sidewalk Thursday morning, August 27, leading to significant injuries. Some extraordinary acts of kindness followed her fall. This is especially remarkable during these difficult times. Four people stopped their cars to help her, all staying until the ambulance arrived. One of the women had her young seven-yearold daughter with her. The young girl thought Sandy needed a blanket and wrapped her up in her special fleece. When Sandy arrived home from the hospital on Friday, she found a lovely little bouquet of sunflowers at her door and a carefully printed note, signed Lila. Sandy assumes Lila is the blanket-giving girl since Sandy shared her name and address with the mother. Sandy very much wants to let Lila know how dear her kindness has been. Without a last name, she hopes this public letter of thanks will reach her. To my dear new seven-year-old friend, Lila, Thank you and your mother who stopped and stayed with me as I lay on the sidewalk having tripped and fallen, hitting my face and knee, rearranging a few spots around my eye and chin, and fracturing my kneecap. Thank you also for asking your mother to bring a blanket from the car to put over me. I want you to know that I continued to be well looked after, first at Brockport Emergency and at another hospital where I stayed overnight till the late afternoon when my daughter picked me up and brought me home. It was then that we discovered your beautiful bouquet of sunflowers which are now sitting on my table along with the portrait you drew of me and you - I love both! With my thanks and love, Your newest 84-year-old friend, Sandy P.S. I would also like to thank the women in other cars who stopped, called the ambulance, and offered tissues until it arrived. And, two incredibly gifted and caring Brockport doctors who are still working on me. Aren’t we all so fortunate to live in a beautiful, small town overflowing with a caring, loving population!

Sweden moves forward with free rabies clinic The annual Sweden Rabies Clinic normally held in May had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The clinic has been rescheduled for Saturday, September 26, at a new location – the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center, 4927 Lake Road. The new location (outdoors in the parking lot) will help facilitate COVID-19 protocols.

Most importantly, appointments are required. While residents are used to just showing up and lining up, no same day appointments will be made. Appointments can only be made by calling the Town Hall at 637-2144 before 5 p.m. on Friday, September 25. Spaces are very limited. Provided information

Spencerport administrator placed on leave following controversial social media video Spencerport High School assistant principal Steven Lysenko was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation after a video of him using expletives against the Rochester Police Department circulated widely on social media. The video was taken in downtown Rochester on Friday, September 4, during a protest against the death of Daniel Prude in which protesters were reportedly sprayed with pepper spray or pepper balls following an altercation with police. The district responded to the situation on Saturday. “As we have stated consistently and clearly, Spencerport Central School District stands in solidarity in support of racial equality and systemic change. We remain committed to this change, and want all of our families to know we further stand in solidarity with peaceful protesters. However, when a District employee uses language in public or on social media that does not align with our Code of Conduct or demonstrate appropriate role modeling for students, that is something that we will not condone. These statements by our administrator have caused disruption within our school community. We apologize to our students, parents and community that you had to hear this language from one of our employees. This will be addressed as a confidential, personnel matter.” Protests were held Tuesday evening at the Spencerport Administration Building with groups both supporting Lysenko and those calling for his firing. Ahead of the

Spencerport protest, district Superintendent Dan Milgate and Ogden Police Chief Chris Mears issued a joint statement that read, in part: “The Spencerport School District and Ogden Police Department have an established, longstanding partnership that has withstood the best of times, as well as the most challenging of times such as like in this year of 2020. It is important for us to remain unified, and therefore we wanted you to know that we have been in constant communication. We feel that: •this is a process, and we must follow all appropriate steps to ensure the integrity of this personnel investigation; •the differences in opinions are clear, and it is certainly an example of the free speech we all cherish in this country; •people may have disagreements, but they are still your friends and neighbors; •our responsibility as educators and police officers is to respect the ability to peacefully protest.” While the investigation into Mr. Lysenko’s actions is ongoing, Bill Jacoutot will take on the role of Interim Assistant Principal. Jacoutot served as the district’s wrestling coach for 30 years before his retirement in 2009. He will serve as assistant principal for the ninth grade as well as the district’s High School Academy.
