Community responds to Valentines for Veterans challenge by Pamela A. Moore, Harvey C. Noone Post #954 Family A Valentine’s Day Challenge was thrown down in January by Churchville’s Harvey C. Noone Legion via an article published in Westside News, and also posted on its Facebook page and website. The challenge: to exceed the 1,236 Valentines that were collected for veterans at the Batavia VA during the 2021 Valentines for Veterans Project. The response to the challenge was decisive. A total of 2,060 Valentines were delivered to the Batavia VA for hospitalized veterans, and also for veterans in the male and female In Residence PTSD programs. Batavia’s PTSD program for female vets is one of only a few in the entire

U.S. Valentines continued to arrive after the deadline and those will be delivered to the veterans living in Westwood Commons in North Chili. One young artist, Renzyn Litolff, made a Valentine depicting the moon and an American flag. Her Valentine encapsulates this challenge, its results, and the love and gratitude contained in each card. It also captured the spirit of the people of this nation who, since its founding, have always joined together to meet challenges, big and small. The challenge here was to demonstrate that we remember and honor our veterans by increasing participation. We succeeded. There was a 42% increase

and Valentines arrived from Monroe, Livingston, and Genesee Counties, thus proving, “We love our veterans to the moon and back.” Along with the Valentines, a $200 check from the Legion Auxiliary’s Poppy Fund was presented to Cindy Baker of the Center for Development and Civic Engagement at the Batavia VA. On behalf of all the veterans, Cindy extended heartfelt thanks to each and every individual, organization, and group of family and friends who took the time to participate in this challenge and, in so doing, ensured Valentine’s Day 2022 would be especially “sweet” for our veterans.

Save the Snowpeople promotes active living and learning this winter Monroe County 4-H Youth Development has launched Save the Snowpeople, a challenge that encourages families to get active throughout the winter via outdoor explorations and activities in Monroe County Parks. Youth participants are special agents on a mission to save the snowpeople—now an endangered species as climate change makes our winters warmer and shorter. Geared to families with children ages five to 19, Save the Snowpeople invites families to complete five activities in five different Monroe County Parks before April 1. Those completing the challenge can enter to win grand prizes, including $100 Wegmans Gift Cards (courtesy of the Ontario Beach Park Program Committee) and $100 in Rochester Public Market Gift Token packages (courtesy of Friends of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County). Monroe County 4-H will host two free guided winter walks offering participants

A Winter Reminder

Please shovel your walk and around your mailbox. This will help you to get your Westside News and your mail carrier will be able to better serve you too. If you are in a windy area, put a piece of duct tape on the back of our tube, or the back of the paper slot under your mailbox, as it will help prevent paper from blowing out.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Hard copies of the Mission Guide are available at the CCE-Monroe Office, 2449 St. Paul Boulevard, Rochester. The office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Monroe County 4-H Program is offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension to the youth of Monroe County. 4-H is a worldwide youth development program open to all youth ages five to 19, who want to have fun, learn new skills, and explore the world. Sweden calls public hearing on property tax exemption The Sweden Town Board will hold a public hearing at 6:15 p.m. on February 22 to hear comments regarding a local law that would grant a property tax exemption to volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance personnel. The partial exemption would be for 10% of the assessed value of the property for town and special district purposes (exclusive of special assessments and debt service districts).

There are two types of eligibility for property owners who reside in the Town. The first is for those who are active members of the fire department or ambulance service for at least two years. The second is a lifetime exemption for those who have more than 20 years of active service. Volunteer departments or services must file a notice with the Town assessor each year prior to March 1 certifying the qualified members. The granting of this benefit does not dimmish any other property tax exemption under Article 4 of the Real Property Tax Law the volunteer might already receive. “Our volunteer emergency responders provide an invaluable service to our community,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “This partial tax exemption acknowledges that service and hopefully serves as a recruitment and retainment tool. The cost to the taxpayers for paid fire and ambulance service would be astronomical.” Provided information

Free eye screening for children in Hilton

On behalf of the Kiwanis Club of Spencerport, Dominic Agostini (left) was presented with a check by Ogden Recreation Director Andrea Hansen. This check represents proceeds from the Pineway Ponds Park 5K Walk/Run held in September 2021. Race organizers are grateful to local businesses for their support, along with the hundreds of runners (and walkers) that have made the race special over all the years it’s been held. The 2022 race is scheduled for Saturday, September 24. Provided information and photo.

The Parma Public Library will host a free eye screening for children on Wednesday, February 23, from 10 a.m. until noon and again on February 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. The screening is for children from 6 months to seven years of age. No reservations are needed. The screening will be done by members of the Hilton Lions Club using a “spot camera” to screen both eyes at once from a non-threatening three-foot distance. No drops are used and the children are not touched. Young children may have vision conditions that are sight threatening. The most common is amblyopia, or lazy eye. This is a condition in which the vision of one eye doesn’t develop the same as the other. If not detected and treated by age six, the chances of successful outcomes drop off dramatically. This can affect a child throughout their life. This simple, safe, touchless screening can detect risk factors for amblyopia in less than one second in a cooperative child. Parents will be told on the spot if the child passes or fails and should be seen by an eye care specialist. Provided information

Finger Lakes Opera singers to perform in Brockport Soprano Starletta Noll-Long and baritone Jordan Bachmann, with pianist Kevin Nitsch, will perform in the second of Brockport’s four 2022 Winter Serenades. The concert series continues at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, at St Luke’s Episcopal Church, on the corner of Main and State Streets, Brockport. The series is family-friendly and free, with no tickets required. As with all Village activities, current COVID guidelines will be followed. There is ample space within the church for people to sit distanced from others. The performance can also be viewed on YouTube via a link on the stlukes.org website. The lively program of familiar opera arias and songs from well-known musicals begins with “Oh what a beautiful morning” from Oklahoma! and continues with a wide array of solos and duets. The FLO’s July 2021 Summer Serenades performance ended with a standing ovation and this event is expected to be equally popular. Pennsylvania native Starletta Noll-Long studied Music Performance in voice at Susquehanna University and Binghamton University. In her studies, roles Starletta has sung include Suor Angelica and La Maestra delle Novizie in Suor Angelica, Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, and Giulietta in Les contes d’Hoffmann in scenes. In 2019, Starletta was a young artist with Finger Lakes Opera where she performed scenes including Josephine in H.M.S. Starletta Noll-Long Pinafore and La Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro in addition to being cast as the narrator in the children’s opera Jack and the Beanstalk. She also sang in FLO’s 2019 productions of La Bohème. In recent years she has been actively performing in local theatre, choral and orchestral venues across the Greater Susquehanna Valley, including the Susquehanna Valley Chorale, and the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra. She currently resides as a choir section leader and soloist at United Presbyterian Church of Binghamton.

Jordan Bachman, an active performer in the Rochester community, is a 2017 graduate of SUNY Geneseo with a BA in Voice Performance. He works part-time as the Bass Soloist/Section Leader at Asbury First UMC and full time as a Senior 401k Operations Analyst at Paychex. He also teaches private voice lessons. This past summer Jordan was seen in Finger Lakes Opera’s production of The Barber of Seville, and Jordan Bachman has been in numerous other FLO productions over the years. He has performed in various concerts with JCC CenterStage, most recently Something Magical: Disney in Concert. He serves on the Board of Directors for Pittsford Musicals, where he was seen as Prince Topher in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Other credits include: Airness (Understudy, Geva Theater); Oklahoma! (Curly, JCC CenterStage); Sweeny Todd (Anthony, Pittsford Musicals); and Beauty and the Beast (Beast, RWCCT). More information on the Winter Serenades concert series is available at www.brockportny.org or by calling 637-5300, ext 110. A link to the YouTube stream of the performance can be found at stlukes.org. Provided information and photos

In Anna Murrer’s health class at Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton, seventh graders have been learning about mental health and the prevalence of mental illness among people experiencing homelessness. While someone who has a physical ailment often seeks help immediately, students learned that it takes eight to 11 years on average for a person with a mental illness to seek help, often due to stigmas and stereotypes. The class brainstormed ways people can help break those stigmas and stereotypes, including raising awareness, advocating, volunteering, providing resources, and making donations. After their discussion, students got to work writing notes of encouragement and filling zip bags with donated soap and small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. “Adding the note helps the students make personal connections with the recipients,” said Murrer. In all, about 500 bags will be dropped off at the Open Door Mission in Rochester this month. Provided information and photo

10 Westside News East and West Editions - February 13, 2022 Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) used National Pizza Day on February 9 as an opportunity to show his appreciation for the work local police departments within his district have done to protect their communities by sending pizzas from local shops to 11 area departments, including Brockport PD, Holley PD, Albion PD, and Orleans and Genesee County Sheriff’s Departments. “Our officers put their lives on the line daily to protect us and our neighbors, and it must be said their work has only grown more challenging in the last several years,” said Hawley. “When I learned that National Pizza Day was coming up, I knew that it was a chance to give back, so it was my honor to provide some nourishment to our hard-working officers. While it is unfortunate I was not able to deliver the pizzas to the departments myself, having legislative session to attend to today, I hope our law enforcement professionals are able to find some time to enjoy a slice.” Assemblyman Hawley’s Chief of Staff Eileen Banker is shown above dropping off pizza to Sheriff Christopher Bourke at the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office. Provided information and photo.

Application deadline nears for Enhanced STAR property tax exemption The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is reminding seniors that, for most localities, the deadline to apply for greater property tax savings through the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption is March 1. To be eligible for the 2022 Enhanced STAR property tax exemption, seniors must: currently receive the Basic STAR property tax exemption; have one owner of the property who will be at least 65 years of age by December 31, 2022; and have had 2020 income equal to or below $92,000. “We want every eligible senior to receive the increased property tax benefit,” said Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “To help ensure that seniors don’t miss out on this valuable benefit, we recently sent letters to 27,000 seniors who may be eligible for additional savings.” Eligible seniors should apply to their assessor’s office by the application due date, which is March 1 in most towns and some cities, but there are exceptions. Seniors should verify their exact due date with their local assessor.

To apply, seniors must provide the following to the assessor: •Form RP-425-E, Application for Enhanced STAR Exemption •Form RP-425-IVP, Supplement to Form RP-425-E •Proof of income: 2020 New York State or federal income tax forms. (If the senior wasn’t required to file an income tax return, the assessor can guide them on how to provide proof of income.) In 2021, 577,000 seniors received a total of more than $800 million in savings from the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption. Seniors who receive the STAR credit instead of the STAR exemption don’t need to apply or take any other action. The Tax Department will automatically upgrade them to Enhanced STAR if they qualify. For more information, visit the STAR Resource Center at www.tax.ny.gov/star/ or contact the Tax Department’s STAR Hotline at 518-457-2036 on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Provided information

Museum Quilt Guild holding exhibit in Batavia Museum Quilt Guild is hosting a members’ quilt exhibit in the gallery room of Batavia’s Richmond Library for the month of February. Twenty-one small quilts with various interpretations of this year’s annual challenge theme feature a variety of techniques and subjects for “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” Rock signifies traditional quilt block or quilting technique. Paper indicates paper piecing, foundation, or English paper-pieced. Scissors represents traditional needle turn, or modern fusible or raw edged applique. Members were asked to choose a category for their quilt when submitted. So far, Scissors is winning with nine entries, but members will be able to vote for their favorites in several categories on blue ballots. The public can vote for their favorite “Viewer’s Choice” on white ballots. The categories of the quilts which get the most overall votes will help determine the answer to the ultimate game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Some of the quilters who have entries in the challenge show will be available at the library after the guild’s monthly meeting on Saturday, February 19, from noon to 2 p.m. for an informal “meet and greet.” All are welcome to stop by and see the quilts, ask questions of the quilters, and vote for their favorites. Museum Quilt Guild has survived the challenges of COVID with Zoom meetings and meetings at a local park this summer, and is happy to be once again at the VA every third Saturday of the month at 9:30 a.m. Masking and social distancing are required for the meetings. This hilarious book about the growing pains of blended families and the secret rivalry of pets led to much creativity as principals and teachers introduced the book to their students. Having all three schools reading the same chapters every day will also bring connection in neighborhoods and the overall community.” As a special treat, Suzanne Selfors, the author, will be visiting all three elementary schools the first week in March for the first live author visit in three years.
