Byron-Bergen Elementary School hosts annual Farm Day The usually empty grounds behind Byron-Bergen Elementary School bustled with action on June 2 for Farm Day. The annual event invites local farmers, many of whom have student participants in the FFA or 4-H, to bring livestock to the school campus. This day-long event is designed to acquaint the rest of the student body with local agriculture production. “The goal is to make sure the students know about various domestic animals that they may not have come across,” said Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor Jeff Parnapy. “Only 2% of the United States population takes part in production agriculture. That leaves 98%, so it’s a good guess that, even in a rural community, some kids haven’t been exposed to anything like this.” Among the animals present are cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, and a horse, as well as an enormous tractor and informational booths to educate about animal nutrition and the difference between hay and straw. A dark brown cow let out a resonate moo. “Not all cows are that vocal,” says Byron-Bergen senior and FFA President Rachel Best. “This one has only mooed once in two years.” She gestures to the cow beside whom she is sitting. Best’s chocolate-brown cow is pregnant and rests on the grass. After the calf is born, this cow will go into milk production. A group of kindergarteners approach the cow, who sits calmly while they stroke its back and Best describes dairy farming. Her fellow student volunteers stand with their animals and displays, ready to help the elementary students connect the dots between these animals and the food they eat. “It’s a good opportunity to show kids different animals,” said seventh grade student Audrey Dorman.

Dorman stands with her Hereford calf named Rosie. Rosie, a beef cow, is less than two months old but Dorman has plans to show her at the County Fair. Across the grounds, students pet a Kunekune pig belonging to eighth grade student GJ Donofrio. “They originated from New Zealand. He’s six-months-old but he’s a heritage pig.” Donofrio explains how his heritage pig will grow at half the speed as the pigs in the next pen over. Those pigs are being raised for meat and the students petting them comment on their love of bacon. However, not all animals at Farm Day are raised for food production. Sixth grade student Jillian Weaver monitors a line of younger students waiting to groom her 11-year-old Paint Horse, Sadie. Weaver started riding horses at age three

and currently show jumps with Sadie. “I like the horse the best because it’s soft,” said Kindergarten student Olivia Kerwin. She has spent time with her uncle’s horses and excitedly gets back in line to groom Sadie again. “It’s an important event so our kids can see the area in which they live repre- Sheep freshly shorn for show. sented in a positive light,” said Kindergarten Teacher Ayn Gardner. “They drive by these farms every day, but they don’t get a chance to get in and explore. This gives them an opportunity to see what their future could hold if this interests them.” Later in the day, all the elementary students enjoyed a cheese snack, purchased by the Student Council, made with milk from cows very much like the one they met just hours before. Community loses a respected life long farmer.

Stop by the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum and take a stroll through history.

Canal Museum gets a new look After 15 years of operation, the Spencerport Depot and Canal museum is now open for the season with a new look. Director Simon Devenish undertook a major overhaul of the museum layout last year to provide a more interactive experience for visitors new and old as they enjoy a stroll through history. “We invite you to look at our exhibits for 2022,” Devenish said. “You’ll be amazed at what you might learn.” The museum is currently open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. One of the most interactive displays

at the museum is its 1/32 scale model of the Spencerport lift bridge. Visitors get to experience what it takes to be a lift bridge operator. “We are grateful to our dedicated volunteers and staff who keep the museum running,” Devenish said. “If you would like to take advantage of the best views on the Canal, please consider signing up to volunteer as a museum greeter.” For information about volunteering, contact Devenish at 352-0942 or email info@ spencerportmuseum.org. DOT breaks ground on $400,000 resiliency project in Parma On June 8, New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez announced the start of construction of a $400,000 resiliency project, the first of three projects to help mitigate flooding in the town of Parma through the State’s Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI). During high water events, roadways adjacent to Lake Ontario become flooded and impassable, resulting in a public safety hazard. This project seeks to mitigate future flooding to the roadway through improvements to the town’s stormwater infrastructure. The completed project will allow for safe, uninterrupted passage of travelers and emergency personnel. State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, “Like so many lakefront communities, the Town of Parma has been no stranger to extreme flooding events caused by the rising waters of Lake Ontario. Working with our state and local partners, the New York State Department of Transportation has already helped execute a number of projects that will have lasting and positive impacts on Lake Ontario communities. These efforts continue with this project in the Town of Parma, with our ultimate goal of keeping local roads safe and passable for residents and emergency services staff. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but one project at a time, the REDI Commission is making a real difference in the lives of New Yorkers.” Town of Parma Supervisor James Roose said, “Through REDI, the State is assisting

the Town of Parma in preparedness for future flooding events. These critical projects will help to mitigate the devastating effects of high-water events, safeguarding our infrastructure and protecting our residents. We are thankful to the REDI Commission for the continued support.” Proposed mitigation measures for this project include the installation of storm drainage check valves and sump pump structures at low lying, flood prone areas, allowing the town to drain water away from the roadway during high water events. Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said, “The Shorelines Roads Storm Sewers project in the Town of Parma will ensure properties and roadways along 8,000 linear feet of lakefront are less vulnerable to flooding from Lake Ontario. Our residents along the lakefront incurred thousands of dollars of property damage from flooding in 2017 and 2019. This critical infrastructure project will mitigate that risk for decades to come, improve quality of life, protect our environment and save our taxpayers money. I thank New York State, the REDI commission and Governor Hochul for their investment in Monroe County.” Through REDI, the State has committed up to $300 million, to benefit communities and improve resiliency in flood prone regions along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. For additional information, project profiles and REDI news, visit https://www.governor.ny.gov/programs/ lake-ontario-resiliency-and-economicdevelopment-initiative-redi. Provided information

Comments Texas Bar-B-Q Joint making some changes Texas Bar-B-Q Joint is now in its 15th year, and we have been through so much! Now we are facing new challenges, but we will overcome them – that is why we are modifying our menu in Spencerport. We are pivoting to a limited quick menu, similar to that of the Outlaw Potato Shack, including pulled pork, brisket, ribs, and potatoes, to name a few items. We will also increase our service offered with curbside pickups. I know many people will be disappointed in this change, but we assure you this would not be done if it wasn’t absolutely necessary for TBJ to succeed. We measure success not by wealth but by being able to provide the best food at a competitive price for a long period of time! There are three main factors that led us to this change: staffing, food cost and supply, and catering demand. First, like many industries, we are facing staffing shortages; by limiting the menu, we are able to provide the most popular items with a smaller staff, and this, in turn, should help us alleviate so many days we are closed. Second, inflation is not slowing down, and it affects everyone at every level. With a limited menu, we will be able to absorb some of this inflation and not have to pass it down to you. Along with food costs, we are also struggling with product availability. Limiting the menu will help keep our great BBQ, which you have loved for 15 years, in the community. Finally, our catering demand is higher than ever. Now that so much has returned to normal, we have had a surge in catering similar to pre-covid levels. By limiting the menu, we can move resources to fill the demand where it is needed, and we are keeping our full catering menu available. We really have appreciated all of your support for 15 years and even more as part of the community during the beginning of the pandemic. Now I ask for your support during these new challenging times. We are hoping to run this limited menu during the summer months, and when we make any further changes, we will definitely keep all of you up to date on it. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. Moose can be reached at 585-415-6069.

•July 27 – BBQ Night and 60s music with Tom Quigley. Dinner is pulled chicken. •August 24 – Comedy Night with Dan Viola – get ready for some laughs. Dinner is sausage patties with peppers and onions. One does not need to be a member of the Senior Center to attend; evening meals are open to any seniors in Parma, Hilton, and the surrounding communities. Dinners cost $10 per person, unless otherwise stated, and the deadline to register is the Monday before the meal. For more information or to register, call Hilton-Parma Recreation & Senior Center at 392-9030. Provided information

Rapone credits his wife, the Veterans Administration, and Tenny for getting him to talk about his experiences in the military and working through them once he returned home. “I would never talk about it and then I started coming into Mrs. Tenny’s classes at least 20 years ago,” said Rapone. “And every Veterans Day we are out at the gazebo for a ceremony and she organizes that.” After 30 years teaching in Hilton Central School District, Tenny will retire this June. Memorial Day Parade in Churchville honors the fallen A beautiful morning with the sun shining and a gentle breeze descended on the residents of Churchville and Riga as they remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our Nation and our freedoms this Memorial Day. After missing a few years due to Covid, residents were able to pay their respects and enjoy the parade. County Legislator Steve Brew was one of the dignitaries in attendance, along with town and village leadership. Churchville Mayor John Hartman served as the Grand Marshall. The guest speaker was Village Historian Ron Belczak who talked about the history of the first Memorial Day in Churchville that arguably was the first in the Nation. He spoke about the Churchville veterans who fought in the Civil War and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Legion Commander Ken Juergens spoke to the meaning of Memorial Day and highlighted the names of the 13 military members who lost their lives during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The emphasis was on those who gave up their “tomorrows” so we can enjoy our “todays.” The Lady Liberties from Chili Legion Post 1830 led the parade with their color guard. The parade included the Monroe County Sheriffs Department, the Churchville Fire Department, the Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion led by Ron Torcello, the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts, Robotics Club, the Town of Riga, the Gates Chili Bagpipers, Boys State Representatives, the Lions Club, and others. The Legion family had balloon making and candy for the children while also handing out American Flags. Auxiliary President Ann Plucknette and Legionnaire Tony Torcello placed a wreath at both the WWII and Civil War monuments. The crowd at the ceremony listened as Mae Ennis played guitar and sang Tim McGraw’s “If You Are

Legion Honor Guard at the Civil War Monument. Reading This.” Many were moved to tears by her rendition of the song. The Churchville-Chili High School Band also entertained the crowd, playing the “Star Spangled Banner,” “America the Beautiful,” and the Armed Forces’ “Pride of America.” They finished their performance by playing Taps at the Creekside Cemetery followed by the Bagpipers rendition of “Amazing Grace.” It was an important day of remembrance in Riga/Churchville. Honoring Juneteenth at Genesee Country Village Genesee Country Village & Museum welcomes visitors to explore stories of Black Americans in Western NY in the years following emancipation and the abolition of slavery in the United States on Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Honoring Juneteenth. The event will focus on the everyday lives of both former enslaved and free Black Americans – seeking to reunite with family members scattered across the country, establishing businesses, building relationships in their communities, and both celebrating and continuing to advocate for freedom and equality. This day of historic interpretation is led in partnership with several community partners including Cheyney McKnight of Not Your Momma’s History, David Shakes and the North Star Players, and Professor Richard Newman of the Rochester Institute of Technology. This event is sponsored by Wegmans. Following the Honoring Juneteenth event, all are invited to virtually attend Living History @ Home: Cooking for Juneteenth, on Sunday, June 19, beginning at 1 p.m. Join

the New York Historical Society and Cheyney McKnight from the DiMenna Children’s Museum for an exploration of how some African American New Yorkers would have celebrated the end of slavery. Cheyney, along with historical helper Millen Shiffer, will prepare a celebration feast on a wood-burning stove in Jones Farm Kitchen at Genesee Country Village & Museum. Viewers will follow along as Cheyney and Millen prepare pan-fried trout, turnip greens, and a corn salad. This virtual event is free, and registration information can be found at https://bit.ly/3PVKVxC. Tickets for Honoring Juneteenth are available at https:// www.gcv.org/events/honoring-juneteenth/, and advance purchase is recommended to get the early bird discount. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors (62+), $15 for students (13-18), $12 for youth (12 and under), and children under 2 are free. There will be a small additional fee for tickets purchased day-of at the door. Museum Members can attend this event for free. Provided information

Spencerport Fire Association’s Ladies Auxiliary celebrates 75 years of service Back in the day, almost every fire department had a women’s auxiliary that focused mainly on fund raising to help the departments. Often these dedicated women were the wives, mothers, and sisters of firefighters. Many of these auxiliaries have disbanded, but the Spencerport Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary is celebrating its 75th anniversary of volunteer service in 2022. The group held its first organizational meeting on May 15, 1947. The Auxiliary had 26 original members, and Mrs. Anne Lamberson served as its first president. Lamberson, who passed in 2021 at the age of 101, was the Auxiliary’s last surviving charter member. With their goal of helping to support the fire department, the group’s first fundraisers were selling dishcloths ($0.50), fruitcakes ($3.25), and aprons ($1.25), along with many baked sales and rummage sales. Fundraising has always been a vital part of this organization. Some forms of fundraising have come and gone over the years, but the auxiliary has always found ways to support the fire department and the community. The Auxiliary has held various fundraisers through the years, including sales of candy, cookbooks, hats, and fish fries; holding car washes, card parties, election day lunches, flea markets, Fuller brush sales, grocery raffles, and dinners; booth sales at Country Store, Colby’s Potato Fair, Lions Club events, the Carnival, and Canal Days; craft sales; pancake breakfasts; raffles; rose sales for Mother’s Day; and wreath sales, just to name a few. For many years, the Spencerport Fire Department Ladies

Auxiliary was known for its baked bean sandwiches at the annual Turkey Raffle. Auxiliary membership across the state has declined; however, Spencerport’s has not. Currently, there are 41 active members with 26 being Life members. These members make it possible through their volunteerism for the auxiliary to continue to support the fire department and community in many ways. It is important to the Auxiliary to support the community through various donations. Through the years they have donated to the Burn Bear Program, families in need at Christmas, Spencerport Ambulance, Firemen’s Home on the Hudson, DARE program, Shriner’s Institute, battered women’s shelters, area veterans, military service personnel overseas, Community Chest, March of Dimes, American Lung Association, Muscular Dystrophy, the school marching band, and have sponsored a Girl Scout Troop, a scholarship through the Spencerport High School. They have also donated hats, mittens, school supplies, and money to the middle and elementary schools, have purchased equipment for the fire department, and given gifts and money to the Fire Department Explorer Post. The Auxiliary also works with the Fire Department to thank families for their understanding when one or more of their family members miss dinners and special occasions because they are protecting and helping the community. They hold various parties for the children of the department in the fall, at Christmas time, at Halloween, and in the spring. They also support family movie nights, sledding, and other events as they come along.

The Auxiliary is asking the Spencerport and surrounding communities for help as they put together a book celebrating 75 years of service. If anyone has pictures, articles, letters, or drawings of the Spencerport Fire Association Auxiliary members at events, marching, or in any other manner, the Auxiliary would love the opportunity to make a copy of the item to add to their history collection and possibly their book. Anyone with items is asked to reach out to Sondra at swood@spencerportfire.org. Any and all items are appreciated. The Auxiliary Mission Statement: The Ladies Auxiliary of the Spencerport Volunteer Fireman’s Association supports and strengthens the fire department, its families and the surrounding community with their time, effort and income. The Spencerport Volunteer Fireman’s Association Ladies Auxiliary is a network of diverse women whose purpose is to exclusively support the Spencerport Volunteer Fireman’s Association with emergency related services, entertainment projects and community and family programs and to provide philanthropic funding for charitable activities that are of service to our community. The purpose and goal of the Auxiliary has always been to assist the firefighters of the Spencerport Fire Association in any way possible, and it has continued to meet this purpose and goal for 75 years.
