Ogden manufacturing company halts business to help during pandemic by Tami Raco Century Mold, a local auto parts manufacturing company, received a call on Friday, March 20, from Rochester Regional Health executives asking for help with medical face shields for their staff to help them stay safe while treating patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this was different than what Century Mold typically manufactures, Executive VP Terry Hodge and his team were eager to help and lend their expertise. Tooling Manager Rocco Pizzarello met with the Rochester Regional’s head of surgery and anesthesiology to see exactly what could be improved on the masks. Within 24 hours of the initial call, Century came up with a prototype design that was safer than the version that was being used. The new mask nearly doubles the amount of protection by covering the face from ear to ear and tucking below the chin. This new design provides less risk of transmission, especially for providers who are looking down at a patient in a hospital bed. Within four days, Century Mold had designed and manufactured masks that are now being used in local hospitals. The masks are now being mass-produced with Century Mold making approximately 2,500 masks a day. There are plans to deliver 25,000 to Rochester Regional Health. They have enough supplies to manufacture 100,000 masks according to CEO Ron Ricotta “We named this the Halo Program. The name was chosen as the shield provides a headpiece like a halo, but also because the people who they are made for are our angels,” said Hodge.

Life Solutions of Hamlin providing Easter meals and quarantine supplies to community by Tami Raco Life Solutions of Hamlin provides food and necessities and holiday meal boxes to those in need within the community. They serve Hamlin, Clarkson, and parts of Kendall, Hilton, and Brockport. According to Food Pantry Manager Brenda Pangrazio, there has been a slight increase in need since the COVID-19 pandemic. “For Easter, we provided meals to 90 families in our community,” said Pangrazio. On April 2 and 3, Life Solutions volunteers and members of the local Lions Club packed meal boxes. Each box included vegetables, fruit, nuts, potatoes, ham, turkey/chicken, bread, dessert, and chocolate Easter bunnies for the children. Families picked up most of the meals on Saturday, April 4. Due to the social distancing policies, specific times were scheduled for families to get their Easter meals. Special arrangements were made to provide delivery to those who were unable to pick up their food, or who were in quarantine. Special quarantine supplies were also delivered, if needed.

Volunteers pack Easter meal boxes. Life Solutions is supported by donations from the community, businesses, the Salvation Army, and is partnered with Food Link as an “enabled agency.” During this challenging time of the pandemic, Pangrazio said that Life Solutions is not able to accept any community donations of food or necessities, and are restricted to receiving monetary donations only. Area farmers help feed Byron-Bergen community In the wake of school closings, mandatory social distancing, and the economic downturn, food insecurity is a rising concern. Byron-Bergen Central School District has organized meal pickups to provide breakfast and lunch to school-aged children five days a week, but some local farmers decided to take it a step further. On Thursday, April 2, a trailer piled with potatoes, onions, carrots, and cabbage pulled into the ByronBergen High School parking lot. The produce is a gift to the community from five local farms. Mortellaro Farms, Star Growers, Stymus Farms, Torrey Farms, and Triple G Farms combined their resources to provide food for local families. The drop-off was organized with the help of ByronBergen Kitchen Manager Rozanne Klycek. The idea was brought to her by a family member at Star Growers. contact with other local farmers, eager to help in these uncertain times. As the district was already distributing food, the farmers thought it was the perfect way to reach community members in need. Ultimately, the delivery included hundreds of pounds of produce, which was distributed directly to community members during their regular school meal distribution pickups. “This community never ceases to amaze me,” said Byron-Bergen Superintendent Mickey Edwards. “I am truly humbled by the generosity of these farmers. It was an honor to help carry 10-pound bags of potatoes out to cars, knowing the relief it will provide to our families.” Byron-Bergen Central School District distributes breakfast and lunch for approximately 300 students at the High School bus loop.
