“The health and safety of all our neighbors, particularly our children, is my top priority – and this law will ensure our kids are safer as they walk to and from their school bus,” said County Executive Bello. “I encourage all school districts throughout Monroe County to take advantage of this free program for their students. Thank you to my colleagues in the Monroe County Legislature for prioritizing our children’s safety.”Thelaw allows for school districts to enter into an agreement with Monroe County, which will work with a third-party contractor to install and maintain the cameras at no added cost to school districts or taxpayers.Whileit’s already illegal to pass a stopped school bus in New York State, without this program, motorists can only be issued a ticket if the violation was witnessed by a police officer. The state recently enacted a law allowing localities and school districts to install cameras on school bus arms to capture license plate photos of cars illegally passing stopped school buses. The photos will be verified by the Monroe County Department of Public Safety. Tickets are then sent to the vehicle owner. There are no moving violations or points issued and the fine will not affect a motorist’s insurance“Anrate.average of 19 school-age passengers are killed getting on and off the bus each year across the nation – our students’ safety is non-negotiable,” said Dr. Casey Kosiorek, Superinendent of the Hilton Central School District and President of the Monroe CounCounty Council of School Superintendents is grateful to County Executive Bello and the Monroe County Legislature for this new legislation that will deter motorists from passing a stopped school bus.” Violations will increase with each offense that occurs within an 18-month time period as follows: $250 for a firsttime offense; $275 for a second violation within 18 months of the first; and $300 for a third violation or subsequent violations within 18 months of the first. An additional penalty of $25 will be issued for each violation for the failure to respond to a notice of violation within the prescribed time period.

New legislation in Monroe County allows cameras on school bus stop-arms after the new legislation

Because of the pandemic, Southern Gospel NY, Inc. (SGNY) last brought GloryWay Quartet to Spencerport in 2019. That year they were chosen SGNY Artist of the Year by people that have come out and heard them sing. The group is returning to Spencerport on Saturday, September 17, for at 4 p.m. concert at Spencerport Bible Church, 1948 North Union Street. GloryWay was founded in Mansfield, Ohio, by lead singer, Justin Crank. Raised on good old-fashioned gospel music, Justin developed a love for four-part harmony. What began as four friends singing around town has blossomed into a powerful full-time ministry. GloryWay travels over 60,000 miles annually, all across the United States, sometimes booking engagements over a year in advance. They put on a unique and versatile performance that blends classic four-part harmony with new sounds and styles. They look forward to each and every opportunity to share their ministry. GloryWay songs can be heard on nationwide radio, including “Nobody,” “God, You’re Amazing,” and “End of the Story.” Many GloryWay fans have found comfort in “Just a Little While,” a ballad written by GloryWay’s own John Cole. All of these songs can be found on their most recent project titled “God, You’re Amazing.” A donation of $15 per person will be received at the door; free for those ages 19 and under. The donation will help cover some of the traveling expenses for the group. For information, contact Joyce or Bob at 585-329-3840.

The first project was completed late in 2020 and dealt mostly with streetlights along major roads, the commercial district, and rural intersections.

4.Your homemade pie will need to be delivered to the Ingham Room of the Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street, between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM on Saturday, October 1, 2022. All cars need to be removed from Henry Street by 9:00 AM or will be towed at owner’s expense.

The second phase will convert streetlights in subdivisions and a few outliers not undertaken during the first project. Converting the 144 remaining lamps to LED lighting will reduce the energy used and lower the utility bills for Sweden’s nine lighting districts. It will likely still be several months before the project is complete.Provided information

“There haven’t been any kind of restrictions,” then Fire Chief Allen Mercer said at the time, “It’s just that no women have applied for the position.” He added “Maybe women can’t do some of the heavy physical exertions. On the other hand, maybe they can do it better. I don’t know. But there are certain things on any volunteer department that anyone can do.” While much was made of her being the first woman in the department, Daum says she felt very welcomed by the Silsby Hose Company. “I instantly met many friends who made me feel part of the Brockport community. I am glad to say that 48 years later I still have those friends.” It was also through her involvement with Silsby Hose that she met First Lieutenant Gary Rheinwald. “Our love grew quickly,” she said, and the two were married on October 12, 1974. They later divorced and he passed away in 2020, but Daum still has the letter from him welcoming her to the department. Daum served on the volunteer ambulance corps which was organized in 1962 as part of the fire department. After a six-hour training course, she acted as the “third person” in the ambulance for a while, learning the route and building her confidence until the captain deemed her capable of becoming a driver. She was an active member of the corps for two years, but she says the first call she went on was one of the most memorable. “My first ambulance call was to a home on Lake Road in Clarkson. The person was severely burned by charcoal lighter fluid. Our first aid saved his life,” Daum recalled.Daum devoted more than 20 hours a week to her volunteer work with the corps. “I had a passion to serve the community as an ambulance corps member. I care about people and the reward comes back for every act of kindness,” she said. “There is such a need for volunteers. No matter where you live, you will never regret joining a volunteer fire company. You become part of a family.”

Brockport Central School District is working with Rachel’s Challenge, an organization born from the Columbine tragedy, whose mission includes “building connections, hope and resilience, while improving school culture so that students are able to reach their full potential academically, socially and emotionally.” Given the experiences over the last several years, the district believes this is the ideal opportunity to reestablish prioritizing relationships as the most effective path to realizing its vision, mission, core beliefs and goals. Using the remarkable story of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School tragedy, Rachel’s Challenge awakens individual hope and purpose, which in turn promotes safer, more connected school communities.

On Thursday, September 15, Brockport CSD will be hosting a Community Event for district families at 6 p.m. at Brockport High School’s auditorium. A Rachel’s Challenge staff member will share Rachel’s story, and parents will learn how Brockport CSD plans to implement the program within the district. To reserve a seat for this community event, pre-register by September 14 at www.bcs1.org. This tragic yet inspiring story illustrates how deliberately reaching out to others with kind words and small acts of kindness can have a life-changing impact. The district plans to present Rachel’s Challenge to students in grades 7-12 through age and content-appropriate assemblies and chain reaction workshops. The goal is to work as a team to inspire and empower students to affect permanent, positive change within the district and community through their actions and words. In just over two decades of social-emotional and mental health training, Rachel’s Challenge has reached over 30 million students, educators and community members. Its programs, along with the existing efforts of the schools, have helped to sustain a culture where harassment, violence and self-harm are reduced; where teachers are free to teach, and students are empowered to learn. An independent study conducted by Multi-Dimensional Education, LLC, a nationally recognized educational program evaluator, found that, “schools implementing Rachel’s Challenge with fidelity achieved statistically significant gains in community engagement, faculty/student relationships, leadership potential and school climate; along with a reduction in bullying“Rachel’sbehavior.”Challenge works to turn the ideals of kindness and compassion into actionable strategies that help promote a safe and productive learning environment,” said Brockport Superintendent Sean Bruno. “We look forward to sharing this inspiring program with our students, staff and families this fall and throughout our year.”Provided

•Gently place picked apples into your basket. Pickyourown.org recommends gently placing apples into your basket after picking them. Tossing them into the basket may cause bruising, which can lead to the apples spoiling prematurely. While it depends on the variety, many apples that are not bruised tend to last a long time, especially when stored in a cool place. So taking care of them when picking them can mean you get to enjoy apples for several weeks.

Apple picking is a beloved autumn tradition. The picking season tends to begin in mid- to late-September and ends sometime in early October. Individuals interested in apple picking this fall can take heed of these tips to ensure their trip is fun and successful. •Choose firm apples without bruises. According to Pickyourown.org, apples should be crisp and firm. Don’t worry about the color of the apple, as color is not an indicator of ripeness. Instead, Pickyourown.org advises people to ask the farmers which apples are ripe, which is determined by how long it’s been since the trees flowered.

Apple picking pointers

•Clean apples before eating them. Produce should be rinsed before it’s peeled so any lingering dirt and bacteria are not transferred from the knife onto the fruit or vegetable. If bruising has occurred, cut away the damaged or bruised areas before preparing or eating it. Apple picking is a beloved autumn tradition that can be even more fun when employing a few strategies designed to make it more fruitful. (Metro)

A beginner’s guide to fall planting and garden maintenance

Spring and summer are perhaps the busiest times of year for gardeners. However, fall also is a prime time to tend to gardens.Thetree and bare root retailer Bower & Branch advises that soil temperatures in many regions of the country may still be warm enough to encourage root growth well into the start of winter. Furthermore, fall is often the ideal time to plant, fertilize and keep a garden going or to get a head start on next year’s bounty. Here are some tips to make the most of the fall gardening season.

•Think about fall annuals and bulb planting. Near the end of September, start planting cool-weather-loving pansies and violas for pops of color as summer flowers fade. Also, it’s a good idea to stock up on bulbs that will bloom in the months to come before they sell out in stores. Wait until the temperatures really cool down before planting them in desired spots for spring sprouts.

•Fill in landscaping gaps. Some fall plants can add color around the landscape and brighten up homes to add curb appeal. In addition to pansies and violas, asters, kale, and chrysanthemums are fall blooms. Keep in mind that mums can come back year after year. So take them out of those flower pots and get them into the ground. They can be enjoyed next year as well, sprouting in early spring and developing leaves and buds through late summer.

•Clean up unwanted growth. Fall is an ideal time to cut back spent vegetable plants and get rid of errant weeds. Rather than bagging leaves, mow them with a grass catcher and then add the mix to a vegetable garden as an excellent soil insulator. The nitrogen and carbon will fertilize the soil, enhancing growing possibilities and limiting weed growth.

•Propagate plants in the fall. As temperatures gradually begin to cool, start taking cuttings from perennials, gathering seed pods from azaleas and rhododendrons and dividing hardwood cuttings, says the resource Gardening Know How. Consult with a garden center or horticulturist on the proper ways to propagate stems using rooting hormone and other techniques.

•Takeseason.inventory of the sun. Positioning a garden carefully means maximizing hours of sunlight, which begin to dwindle in the fall. Experts say gardens grow best in sunny locations that receive six hours of direct sunlight each day. This is where container gardens can be helpful, as they allow gardeners to move plants into spots that will get ample sunlight.

•Continue to water plants. Water is essential in the fall and winter as roots can still be growing. Gradually reduce watering duration as plants go dormant.

Fall planting and maintenance can extend gardening season and improve the chances of growing a healthy spring garden.(Metro)
