JDRF kicks off 51st anniversary year with annual campaign JDRF (formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is embarking on its 51st year to find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D). Now more than ever the onset of T1D can happen suddenly, impacting people of any age, affecting them every moment of every day, and it lasts a lifetime.

Tops Friendly Markets is joining in the fight with its 28th annual JDRF Campaign, which begins Sunday April 11, and runs through Saturday, May 1. The goal is to raise money to fund research to help find a cure for T1D. The paper sneaker, which was designed by a Tops associate

back in 1993 and is now widely used nationally as well as internally in JDRF fundraising campaigns, will be sold at Tops registers for a $1 donation. Since 1993, Tops has raised more than $13.5 million dollars for the cause, putting the company in the top 10 fundraisers in the country for many years.

Based on the latest reporting from the CDC, approximately 1.6 million people are affected by T1D in the United States. That is an increase of 30 percent in just two years, with medical expenses for those with T1D being three times higher than for people without diabetes.

“Over the years in working closely with our partners at JDRF we have seen first-hand the important role this organization plays in nearly every major advancement for diabetes. Whether it be in the form of drug, device, or cell therapy, made in T1D in the last 50 years, JDRF is the leading nonprofit fighting to find cures for T1D and improve the lives of those living with the disease today” said Frank Curci, chairman of the board and chief executive officer for Tops Friendly Markets.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Sharon; daughter Holly (Mike) Cunningham; son Jeff Woodley; grandchildren Jessa (Eli) Blosenhauer, Dalton Cunningham; great grandchildren Benjamin and Daniel Blosenhauer; sister Janet Moore; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

His Funeral Service was held April 3 at Fowler Funeral Home, Inc., Brockport. Interment will take place at the family’s convenience. Donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Association in his memory.

•Flaig, Donald D., died February 19, 2021, at age 76.

Donald was a lifelong Churchville resident and was well known for his love of cars, music and coffee. He had several show cars and spent much of his life working on his hot rods and sharing time with his other “hot rodder” friends.

Donald was predeceased by his father Charles Flaig and mother Rose (Kiash) Flaig. He is survived by his daughter Kelly (Flaig) Hammel; son in law Bill Hammel; grandsons Brandon and Jack Hammel. He is also survived by his three siblings Jane Flaig, Judy (Flaig) Elwell and Thomas Flaig, and several nieces and nephews.

All are welcome to attend a Graveside Funeral Service Saturday May 1, at 11 a.m. at Riga Cemetery, Churchville.

Predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Nellie Reece; and seven siblings. Survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Gary; children, Tina Mayewski and Tracy (Alan) Borlaug; grandchildren, Brittany, Elizabeth, Ryan and Victoria; siblings, Jimmy and Frank Reece and Alma (Norm) Hackel; several nieces and nephews.

HAMLIN

•Heinrich, Richard W., drew his last breath April 5, 2021, mainly, we suspect, to prevent himself from having to watch another Hallmark movie. Hopefully, he still isn’t hearing the bells, piano, and violins playing.

Although labels weren’t his cup of tea, Rich was a beloved, “husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.” He is survived by Sharon, Casey, Cori, Jay, Michelle, Mason, Gavin, Evan, Payton, Ty, Obi, and Tawnie, as well as 200+ members of the Jackson Clan.

There were many things in life Rich thought people should know, such as: make sure to double check the color of your socks; mow the lawn in turtle mode; the secret of telling the difference between thermometers; how to read between the lines; why Mickey broke up with Minnie; and the best answer is always, “Yes Dear.”

Richard’s visitation was held April 9 at Walker Brothers Funeral Home in Spencerport.

Rich also practiced random acts of kindness. Where others saw bums and bag ladies, he saw people in need and was happy to help them. To honor his memory, please do the same, in lieu of flowers.

Rich was perfectly imperfect, and perfect for us. He will be missed by all.

•Stefanovski, Vlado, died April 6, 2021 at age 86. Predeceased by his son, Aleksandar. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Liljana; son, Kosta (Daniela); grandchildren, Aleksandra, Stefanie and Vladimir; several nieces and nephews. Vlado was born in Macedonia in 1934 and came to America in his 20’s. He was a retiree of Xerox.

Police issue guidance amid string of armed car thefts

On Sunday, March 28, several ladies from Ferris-Goodridge American Legion Auxiliary #330 spent time filling 57 purses with personal care items, medical supplies, and socks. Once filled, these purses were taken to St. Charles Church and given to Deacon Dan for distribution to House of Mercy and Mary’s House. Several bags of men’s articles were also collected and will be distributed where needed. This event is held twice a year thanks to the Legion family and members of the community who contribute to its success. Provided information and photo.

Over the last several weeks, there have been numerous instances of vehicles being stolen at gunpoint throughout Monroe County. These crimes are typically occurring in the evening or early nighttime hours. The thieves are operating with two typical patterns of robbery.

In some instances, the thieves will rearend the target vehicle at low speed and wait for the victim to exit the vehicle. They will then approach the victim and rob them of their vehicle at gunpoint. Police advise anyone involved in this situation to remain in their vehicle with the doors locked and call 911 immediately. If possible, leave the location for a public place or police station to seek assistance.

In other cases, the thieves will follow the victim to their destination (sometimes their home or other location) and wait for them to exit their vehicle. They will then approach them on foot and rob them of their vehicle at gunpoint. Motorists are advised to pay close attention to their surroundings.

Anyone who feels they are being followed or that there is a potential threat in the vicinity should consider driving to a public area or police station rather than to their home. Remain in the vehicle with the doors locked and call 911.

A task force spanning multiple police agencies has been formed to investigate these cases. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

It’s trout o’clock

by T.R. Hendrick Remember this time last spring when we were all nervous about being in tight quarters with another human, let alone getting in a boat with someone to fish? Many believed everything they touched could carry the virus, and worse yet, we were going to run out of TP. Speaking of TP, there is a brilliant book on that subject titled No Toilet Paper by author Hans Brown… but I digress. As a country, we’ve learned a lot since last spring; unfortunately, much of it the hard way. This spring, there is a feeling of renewal in the air, a fresh start if you will. I believe with vaccines and wearing masks in large gatherings, we can enjoy a new normal, and as anglers, we can again celebrate the fact Western New York has some of the finest fishing in the U.S. I would put the freshwater fishing within a few hours’ drive in any direction of Rochester against any place in the country.

With boundless fishing waters like Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, the Finger Lakes, and the Thousand Islands region, our fishing in Upstate New York is something to be proud of. Most anglers in the U.S. would give up their second vaccine to live in such a fishing paradise.

Each month brings on a hot bite for a different species of fish. Come April, trout are the fish to target. Whether you’re a stream angler or a Lake Ontario troller, you can’t go wrong. These two styles of fishing are about as different as opera and hip hop, and rarely does a stream angler ever troll or vice versa. If you choose stream fishing, there are hundreds if not thousands of miles of great trout streams across the state. The DEC stocks around 2.3 million catchable-size brook, brown, and rainbow trout in almost 300 lakes, ponds, and

roughly 3,100 miles of streams across the state. Many of these streams support wild populations of trout as well. Good fishing can be had on inland streams like Naples Creek, Catherine Creek, and Powder Mills Park. The DEC stocks around 151,000 brook trout, 1.8 million brown trout, 89,000 of which are two-year-old fish that average thirteen inches, and around 392,000 rainbow trout each spring into streams and lakes. The DEC has some great information on stocking areas and tips on stream fishing on their website.

If you are looking for big brown trout, Lake Ontario is the place to play come April.

As the lake warms up to the low 40s, brown trout leave the creeks and rivers and move along the shoreline, shopping the warmer water for schools of baitfish. They will often congregate around river mouths where the warmer river water meets the lake water.

Pier anglers at these tributaries have good luck at certain times but are limited to that location. If you have a boat, trolling is your best bet, as the browns are usually scattered, and trolling allows you to cover much more water. Almost any boat 14-foot or larger will work as you will be fishing close to shore, that is, if Lake Ontario is in a good mood. Just beware of wind changes and get off the water if the winds switch to the north. Offshore south winds usually bring warm temperatures and calm waters, at least near shore. Any winds out of the north or west, and the big O gets upset fast. There is a free application called “Windfinder” that gives you a five-day wind forecast and, in some cases, predicts wave heights. We have learned by using this app all summer when fishing walleyes on Lake Erie to double their predicted wave height, and you will get a better idea of how rough it will be. As far as trolling equipment goes, all you need is

Provided photo a couple of decent fishing rods rigged with 12 to 15 lb. test fishing line and a handful of minnow-shaped stick baits, and you will be good to go. Troll them behind the boat about 60 to 100 feet back and motor slowly along the shoreline, staying under 2.5 mph, fishing when possible right where the darker tributary water intersects with the clear lake water.

Without a doubt, the greatest thing about these fandangle (geezer alert) smartphones is that it weeds out the baloney (second geezer alert) artists when it comes to bragging about the fish they catch. These days, if someone doesn’t show you a picture of the fish they claim they caught, it didn’t happen! Unfortunately, a photo is all you

may want when catching these Lake Ontario browns because, like their cousins, the salmon aren’t the greatest table fare.

Best break out the smartphone and practice CPR - “Catch… Photograph… Release!”

That is, unless you have a recipe that can take the strong flavor out of these browns, then by all means, “release to the grease.”

Remember, unlike salmon in the fall, these browns aren’t in the process of dying, and if released, someone else could enjoy the fun that the fish gave you.
