One hundred-year-old dream lives on in heirloom dollhouse

by Tami Raco John Wesley Leach grew up in the Spencerport area.

After his military service in World War 1, he returned to the area, married his wife, and began a family in 1919.

A carpenter by trade, John worked for Morse Lumber Company.

According to his daughter Shirley, John dreamt of owning a beautiful home someday and began crafting a doll-sized modeling of his dream home. John handcrafted the entire house with his masterful carpentry skills - the structure, walls, roof, interior, detached garage, furnishings, and windows. The roof is removable allowing a view into the furnished rooms. Shirley recalls when she was a little girl that her dad would set the house out on display at Christmas time and put Santa Claus in the chimney.

Although John Leach’s dream home never came to fruition, his dream house has continued to live on as a legacy for nearly a century.

This family treasure has been passed on throughout the decades, starting with the eldest children.

Shirley received this cherished dollhouse, representing her father’s dream, several years ago. This Christmas, Shirley set the house up in front of a picture window in her Parma home. She even found a Santa to include on the rooftop, just as her dad once had.

The most treasured heirlooms are the ones that capture the sweet memories of family and keep them alive.

by Kristina Gabalski Reasons to keep those dead and dying trees in your landscape

by Kristina Gabalski In one of their recent newsletters, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation argued that some of the most important trees in a woodlot are ones that are no longer alive. The DEC explained that dead or dying trees, called snags, help keep woodlands healthy by providing habitat for wildlife. Birds and mammals need snags for foraging, nesting, roosting, perching, and for dens. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees nest in dead trees, and bats roost in their cavities and crevices. Snags also provide insects, fungi, and lichens that many species rely on for food. Additionally, the DEC says that snags provide structural complexity, provide visual interest, store carbon, and will enrich soil in the future.

Even in your home landscape, snags and fallen trees can be beneficial and add interest to your plantings. As long as the tree is not in a hazardous location - such as near a road or building - there are no local zoning ordinances regarding leaving dead or dying trees on your property. If the tree is not infected with disease or a fungus, you might want to consider the possibilities that dead trees offer.

Washington State University Master Gardener Kathy Wolfe writes that using dead or dying trees in your landscape can enhance important biomass as well as attract beneficial wildlife. Even fallen logs make a good ground cover for many varieties of birds, and organic matter from rotting trees encourages mushroom growth, which can feed turtles, birds, squirrels, and deer.

If you have trees with weak wood, are

shading an area where you want sun, or have roots that are invading pipes or septic systems, you can consider turning them into a snag.

If you would like to try incorporating a dead tree into your yard, an arborist can be helpful in the process of creating a snag in your landscape. Wolfe advises retaining other trees and shrubs near the snag to protect it from wind and provide additional habitat for birds and wildlife. Try to retain as much of the tree as possible. A high stump can support a lot of wildlife compared to one cut to ground level, Wolfe explains.

Get creative with your design; arborists can cut a jagged top to your snag to give it a natural look or add slits or a cavity.

Logs can be used to make nooks and crannies for plants in a natural woodland garden. Hollow stumps can be used as planters; nurse logs can foster the growth of ferns and mosses. Limbs pruned from large trees can be used to line paths, curtail erosion, or border planting areas.

If incorporating dead and dying trees into your landscape is not possible or doesn’t appeal to your aesthetic, wood and bark from dead trees can be chipped up and used for mulch, as long as the tree is not diseased.

Dead trees are a common part of the landscape, and they have an important role to play in nature. Retaining at least a portion of dead or dying trees can add interest and healthy diversity to your yard.

Speaking of dead trees, if you still have your live Christmas tree, remember it can be staked in your yard northwest of your bird feeders to provide a windbreak and cover for birds. Branches can be cut and used as an excellent mulch for perennial beds, too.

Finger Lakes COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force launches

Group to oversee efficient and equitable roll out of COVID-19 vaccines Nearly 60 regional leaders gathered virtually on January 7 to ensure equity, transparency, and efficiency in COVID19 immunization efforts, with a goal of vaccinating at least 70 percent of adult residents of the Finger Lakes Region.

The Finger Lakes COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force was convened by Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and Monroe County Public Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza, and will be chaired by Dr. Nancy Bennett, the lead for the Finger Lakes COVID-19 Hub at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and Wade Norwood, CEO of Common Ground Health.

While COVID-19 has presented an unprecedented challenge nationally and locally, the Vaccine Task Force allows the region to harness the reach and talents of organizations throughout the nine Finger Lakes counties of Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates.

“The Finger Lakes COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force will play an important role in helping to answer questions and serve as a point of contact for residents across our region as we continue through the early stages of the COVID-19 vaccination process. We understand there are going to be questions, but we want to ensure everyone has accurate answers to make an informed decision about getting the vaccine,” said Bello. “The task force will be made up of members who represent the diversity of our region – from urban, suburban and rural communities, business leaders, medical professionals, community members and everything in between.”

The advisory group includes representatives from Rochester Regional Health, the University of Rochester Medical Center, safety net practices, the City of Rochester and other municipal and county governments, non-profits, residents, business, labor, education and more. The task force will advise the Finger Lakes Regional Hub, the state-designated organization for coordinating the supply, distribution and delivery of COVID-19 vaccines across the region.

It will also oversee strategies and tactics for guaranteeing that every adult in our region has the information and access they need to make an informed choice about vaccination.

“We have learned that if we don’t want to leave any populations behind, we have to make sure that historically marginalized groups have a seat at the table where decisions are made,” said Wade S. Norwood, task force co-chair.

“Different groups need different approaches, from religious communities both rural and urban to migrant

workers in farming communities, to Black folks in city neighborhoods,” said Norwood. “By representing the true diversity of our region, the task force will help us build a foundation of trust and transparency among communities and organizations.”

Nancy “Nana” Bennett, MD, task force co-chair, said: “I am honored to help lead our region’s efforts to deliver COVID-19 vaccine to each and every member of our community safely, quickly and fairly. The task is huge, but our community has proven time and time again that we can come together for the good of all. The Task Force will guide us at every step of the process, and ensure that vaccine administration in our region is equitable, transparent, and efficient.”

Task Force Member Jerome Underwood, president and CEO of Action for a Better Community, said: “The task force will allow us to quickly disseminate accurate information about the vaccines to people who rely on agencies like ABC for critical information. As a trusted messenger, we have an obligation to educate the individuals we serve – individuals who are often economically, socially or emotionally marginalized. We will use our deep community connections to help residents make informed decisions for themselves and their families.”

Task Force Member Angie Perez-Delgado, president and CEO of the Ibero-American Action League, said: “Many in the Latino community have expressed mistrust and little confidence in the vaccine. Lack of Spanish language information has compounded that skepticism. The task force will bring together a concerted effort that will leverage the critical role trusted community based organizations such as Ibero can play in the vaccination strategy.”

Task Force Member Ellie Fralick, a retired rural resident of the region, said: “This wide coalition can dedicate the focused effort on COVID-19 vaccination needed to bring the spread of the virus under control in the Finger Lakes.

COVID infection rates continue to climb in our region and the fallout is costing lives and damaging our economy. For many of our children, the interruption in their education can change their future.”

New Yorkers who are eligible to receive the COVID19 vaccine – currently that includes healthcare workers – should check as soon as possible with their organizations or employers to see if they qualify. The vaccine may be available for only a limited time period before it gets redistributed by the state, so those eligible should act immediately.

“We encourage as many as possible to receive the vaccine – we may have only a short time to stop the virus, and it depends upon as many people getting vaccinated as possible, as soon as possible,” said Nancy Ciavarri, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Oak Orchard Health.

Oak Orchard Health has received a limited supply of COVID vaccine from NYS Department of Health. They are allowed and directed to provide the vaccine for certain types of workers in the communities they serve but must follow strict guidelines provided by New York State DOH. Provided information

Girls on the Run of Greater Rochester spring coaching opportunities Girls on the Run of Greater Rochester’s spring season Coach Registration is now open. Girls on the Run is a physical activitybased, positive youth development program that inspires girls in third through eighth grade to be joyful, healthy, and confident.

The eight-week program incorporates physical activity to teach critical life skills, encourage personal development, foster meaningful connections with others as well as contribution to the community - activities and skills that are necessary and valuable in both national and personal recovery efforts. Volunteer coaches will utilize a structured curriculum to engage teams of girls in fun, interactive lessons. Teams meet twice a week for 75 to 90 minutes in person or virtually and the program culminates with all teams completing a 5K event.

The Greece Cobras U10 Boys (Miceli) ran a canned food drive to benefit the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf. Due to COVID, each family only collected canned foods from family and friends. The team gathered and dropped off donations to the food shelf on December 19. Registration underway for ROC Summer Theater Experience OFC Creations recently announced the 2021 lineup for ROC Summer Theatre Experience, the largest theater summer camp program in Upstate New York.

From July 5 through August 27, 2021, campers ages four to 18 will participate in 14 musical theater productions across two venues with 25 directors. Most camps run two weeks from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with options for before-care and after-care hours.

Each camp concludes with performances open to family, friends, and the public.

Summer 2021 camps include productions at the following locations: •The Kodak Center 200 West Ridge Road, Rochester Little Red Riding Hood, Ugly Duckling, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Princess and the Pea, James and the Giant Peach, Oliver, Elf, Rent: School Edition, Jekyll and Hyde, and Newsies •OFC Creations Theatre Center 3450 Winton Place, Rochester Cinderella, Seussical, Beauty and the Beast, and Tinker Bell.

OFC Creations Executive Director, Eric Vaughn Johnson, is no stranger to summer camp programming. From 2013 to 2018, Johnson designed and spearheaded the Summer Stock program at RAPA, leading upwards of 400 campers throughout the summer. Johnson also served as the artistic

Ontario, Wayne, and Livingston counties since 2010. Volunteers provide critical leadership and the non-profit organization is currently seeking coaches to facilitate the program.

Coaches do not need to be athletes but are required to be a minimum of eighteen years old to serve as an assistant or twenty-one years old to serve as a head coach. All volunteer coaches must complete a background check and attend a virtual training session.

One of the program’s coaches from last season said, “It was so rewarding to be part of the girls’ journey to becoming empowered women. And I can’t begin to describe how changed I am as a person by learning the curriculum alongside them.”

director of SNAP Musical Theater for four summers with casts of 80 students performing shows including Hairspray and The Little Mermaid. Johnson expanded OFC’s ROC Summer Theatre Experience in 2019 with over 500 campers performing several musical productions.

In 2020, OFC continued with ROC Summer Theatre Experience with added precautions for preventing COVID-19, noting no COVID-related issues in the eight weeks of camp. From July to August, OFC welcomed over 500 campers in person, all wearing masks and social distancing, to present 17 summer musicals which were filmed instead of having live audiences.

“Our fingers and toes are crossed that life is back to normal by summer 2021 for camps,” Johnson said. “But we proved in 2020 that there is a safe way to hold theatre camps, and we are confident camps in 2021 will happen one way or another.”

Johnson has established a robust team for ROC Summer Theatre Experience, many of whom are well-known area actors and school teachers with training from New York City, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Orlando, Florida.

Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,IGreece) was officially sworn in January 6 as the 134th Assembly District’s new representative. Jensen was also named as ranking member of the Libraries and Education Technology Committee as well as a member of the Corporations, Health, and Housing committees.

Hawley recaps 2020, hopeful for 2021 With all the negativity and anxiety that has run rampant through the public consciousness in the last year, as we move into 2021, I think we should look back at 2020 and take pride in the strength we showed as a people. In a matter of months our lives were flipped upside down, as everybody from young children to the elderly had to adapt to the unthinkable circumstances we live with today.

From getting used to mask-wearing, bearing with new technologies, and learning to go with less physical contact from the people we love, we have all done our part to face this unprecedented challenge to both our public health and economic well-being. As the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine continues to accelerate in the months to come, I hope we can look to the future with hope and look back at these times in the same way we look at the sacrifices made by our greatest generation during World War II, as people changed the way they live for the sake of their neighbors and their country.

What I would like in 2021 is to see the ability to adapt to changing circumstances displayed by the people of our state emulated within our state government. Just as families throughout the state learned to tighten their budgets and focus on what’s truly essential in this period of hardship, our state Legislature should also look at cutting out spending we don’t need and focusing on what’s really important. Wasteful spending on things like tax breaks for movie studios and extra political advisors for our Governor is unconscionable in a time when more small businesses and restaurants are being forced to close their doors by the day.

This holiday season and throughout the year families looked within their own communities as they purchased gifts and necessities, and just as the people of our state have gone out of their way to support their local institutions, we should act as a state to support our small businesses, small landlords and restaurants that have endured a massive drop in revenue during the pandemic. We should be talking with local stakeholders in these industries and talk about how they can do more, not less, business in our state, and what we can do to support their success in terms of both fiscal and regulatory policy. When small businesses succeed, families prosper, and in 2021 I want to bring the voices of small business owners to the forefront of our conversations in Albany, as they know better than anybody what needs to be done to help them grow and thrive.

2021 might end up being the best year we’ve seen in a long time, but only if the Legislature learns from its mistakes and acts with the same toughness and adaptability the people of our state have. New Yorkers deserve a government as tough and as compassionate as they’ve been throughout this year, and I am hopeful that if the Legislature gets smarter with spending and listens more to people affected by the policies they create, that 2021 will be the dawn of a new and brighter day for our state. With that said, I wish a happy and healthy New Year to all of my friends and neighbors.

Bill met his wife Bonnie while studying at Buffalo State College. After earning a Master’s of Fine Arts at Ohio University, Bill went on to teach ceramics at SUNY Brockport for 33 years. His artwork brought mystery, humor, and joy to the Rochester community for more than half a century. Bill was involved in his community organizing and coaching youth sports, including soccer, baseball, and hockey. As an avid sailor, Bill was a member of The Brockport Yacht Club for 35 years. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of 56 years; son Tim, of Ames, IA, son Greg (Gloria), of Harrisonburg, VA, and son Brad (Julia), of Stone Ridge, NY, as well as his grandchildren, Owen, Mia, Gwen, Jack, and Evelyn.

Eugene had a long standing career as Director of personnel and labor relations at Delco Products of General Motors. He was an active member in the community serving for 50 years in the Brockport Rotary Club.

He received several awards and honors including the Paul Harris Award. Eugene served in the US Army in the 88th Blue Devils Division during WWII. He was selected as a Rochester Honor Flight recipient for the 38th mission.

Spencerport Rotary selects Student of the Month – The Spencerport Rotary Club recently launched a new “Student of the Month” program in partnership with the Spencerport School District. Each student chosen receives a certificate as well as a gift card to a local merchant, purchased by the club. The Rotary feels this program has four positive results - spotlighting a deserving student, strengthening Rotary’s partnership with the school, highlighting a Rotary program to the community, and supporting a local merchant by purchasing a gift certificate. Through Cartons For Christmas, all segments of the Spencerport community come together annually to help local families who are struggling. We weren’t sure what to expect during this pandemic year and how we could respond to an anticipated increase in families. Due to the reduced number of volunteers, we intentionally scaled back food donations to replace with gift cards.

We were overwhelmed by the response of our community in the generous donations of gift cards, money, toys, and some food. We thank all individuals for their donations and participation, especially the 72 folks who delivered the goods to waiting families.

In December we served 156 families (420 people) delivering gift cards, some food, and 208 toys to young children.

We recognize these businesses who support us by contributing gift cards, toys, food, and boxes: Tops Market, Colby Homestead Farms, Victory Packaging in Liverpool, Spencerport Rotary, Town & Country Eyecare Associates, Lattimore Physical Therapy of Spencerport and also the Taylor Elementary Guidance Office.

We are indebted to Scout Troop 165 (Frank Visca) for loading vehicles. The project generally consists of: The Project consists of furnishing labor, materials, and equipment for the installation of a natural gas generator at the Unionville sanitary sewer pump station located at Atchinson Drive in the Village of Hilton. The Village of Hilton has secured a Community Development Block Grant through the Monroe County Department of Planning and Development to fund this portion of the project. Some of the many Middle School volunteers take a much-deserved break at the Pearce Food Cupboard.

Churchville-Chili students give back for the holidays Groups of students at both Churchville-Chili High School and Middle School came up with unique and generous ways to make a difference for their community during the holiday season. At the Middle School, students collected non-perishable food items throughout December for donation to the Pearce Food Cupboard in North Chili. Their “Stuff the Bus” initiative involved the efforts of students from all three Houses at the Middle School, plus many student volunteers who packed boxes, cheerfully loaded them all on a school bus, and then delivered them to the Food Cupboard on December 22.

At the High School, students in the Life Skills class chose to use some of the proceeds from last year’s Coffee Cart project to also benefit the Pearce Food Cupboard. The Coffee Cart, a student-run enterprise that provides both hot

Plant native this spring with Monroe County’s Conservation Tree & Shrub Program What better way to forget about the cold and snow than to start preparing for spring. The Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District has released their spring 2021 species list for their annual Conservation Tree & Shrub program. For 45 years, the district has hosted this successful program, with almost 16,000 native and naturalized trees and shrubs being distributed to landowners last year alone.

With 23 different species, including hardwoods, bare-root conifers, shrubs, wildflowers, and variety packs, the district is doing its part in making our communities green. Don’t miss out on getting your species – pre-order them, along with other products great for conservation projects, including bat and bluebird houses, seed mixes, and more.

The district added four new trees and shrubs, plus several new mixes. The new items are all showy trees and shrubs, sure to liven up your yard and attract a variety of wildlife. This year, Red Maple, Yellow Birch, Balsam Fir, and Steeplebush are being offered. All native, these species produce wildlife-attracting fruit and flowers, provide fall scenery with stunning foliage, and can be used for various home projects like furniture and holiday trees. By planting these native plants, you can increase wildlife habitat,

provide a windbreak (see conifers), reduce erosion, and help create a habitat for pollinators.

The Conservation Tree & Shrub Program is a pre-order program with a deadline of March 5, 2021. There is limited availability for plant stock, so early ordering by mail, email, or online is recommended. Plant material will be distributed at the Monroe County ecopark on April 22 and 23, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A first-come, first-serve overstock sale will be held on April 24, 2021, from 9 to 11 a.m., where remaining trees can be purchased without having to pre-order.

Please note that many of of the program’s tree species come as young, small rooted clumps – not full grown trees.

Once planted, the small seedlings should take to the soil and grow leaves once spring arrives. This year, three of the conifers being offered are transplants, meaning they are stronger and more mature when you plant them.

Financial literacy resources available to local students Advantage FCU is bringing financial literacy education to over 6,180 students and residents in Monroe County.

Students at 11 schools and the surrounding community will now have free access to Banzai, an award-winning online program and content library that allows users to practice real-world finance from the safety of their home or classroom using any internet-enabled device.

A student from the School of Arts wrote, “Banzai taught me how to manage money. Some things are worth purchasing and some things aren’t. It is just better to save money.

Managing your money is important especially if you want a higher education to get you your dream career.”

Through the Banzai online courses, students try out managing a budget, saving for a goal, and dealing with unexpected financial pitfalls. Teachers are able to easily monitor and grade student progress remotely. Other resources, which include articles, calculators, and personalizable coach sessions, explain everything from the basics of filing taxes to how health insurance works. These resources are available at advantagefcu.learnbanzai.com.

Banzai resources are used by over 72,000 teachers across the U.S. These educational tools align with New York’s state curriculum requirements, making the program a fun way for students to gain vital skills and an ideal way for anyone in the community to increase their financial literacy. After finishing the Banzai courses, users will know how to track where their money is and what it’s for, recognize financial trade-offs, and plan for a financially sound future.

Police reform survey offered to Greece residents Greece residents are invited to participate in the State Mandated Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Survey. The survey is available via https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9CB5B57 to through January 16. The survey idea was launched as a way to open the process at a time when groups and gatherings are still being prohibited due to COVID restrictions.

The Town of Greece Police Reform and Reinvention Committee, comprised of members and leaders of the Greece Police, members of the community, members of the non-profit and faith-based community, the local office of the district attorney, the local public defender, and local elected officials, will meet regularly through March 2021.

During these meetings, the committee will identify top policing concerns in the Town of Greece, review policies and procedures associated with those concerns, and hear from community members and professionals about policing in the Town of Greece. The information received as a result of the surveys will assist this group in addressing any areas of concern as they work to formulate a plan for submission per Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order.

“I have appointed Jason Helfer to serve as our Liaison.

Jason will be charged with collecting and sharing information as is gathered from the survey, mediate overall discussions at the meetings and work with the Town Board team throughout the process. He will be the point of contact for the Town of Greece,” said Supervisor Reilich.

The identity of survey respondents will be kept confidential. However, the information and responses will be shared with the entire committee so they can use it as a basis for consideration.

Digital collection of Hunt Papers now available A set of personal and business papers held by the Jane and Richard Hunt family and private owners for more than 140 years are now available digitally through the Women’s Rights National Historical Park. The Hunt Family Papers includes over 1,100 plans, contracts, essays, store records, and correspondence dating from 1828 to 1856.

“This collection gives us a window into the past,’” said Gene Freese, Acting Superintendent. “From details of the architecture in Waterloo, to a glimpse into the family relationships and business dealings of Richard Hunt, this collection is a treasure trove. I invite everyone to dig in and learn more about this prominent New Yorker and the family who helped lay the groundwork for the national suffrage movement.”

The park is highlighting the collection through an online “Hunting in the Hunt Papers” scavenger hunt on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/womensrightsnps While the park has owned the papers for some time, the newly digitized collection is made available online thanks to the dedicated work of the staff at Northeast Museum Services Center. The service center assists with the preservation, protection, management, documentation, and conservation of National Park Service museum and archival collections throughout the northeast. Landscape Technicians Training Program recruiting students for 2021 The Landscape Technicians Training Program has been offered in Rochester for more than 20 years. During this time, hundreds of people have used the training as a launchpad to a career in the nursery and landscape industry. Many graduates can be found locally as business owners, managers, designers and foremen/women.

The program is now a part of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County.

Classes are taught by individuals who work in the horticulture industry, offering information that is scientifically-based, but in easy-to-understand language. Daily student interaction with employers helps build relationships that lead to job offers upon graduation.

Classes meet Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., from February 22 through April 2. Topics covered run from how plants function, soil basics, and plant identification to basic design, proper planting techniques, how to build a patio, and integrated pest management. Class size will be limited to ensure proper spacing, face masks will be required, and daily cleaning of the classroom will be provided.

Tuition for the six-week course is $1,000.

There are several tuition-funding sources available, so prospective students are advised to not let the cost keep them from inquiring about details.

Churchville-Chili HS dancers use holiday cheer to reach out to younger students Every year, students at Churchville Elementary School look forward to learning holiday dance routines from visiting “big kids” from the high school. In this strange year of social distancing, Churchville-Chili High School dance instructor Janelle Hernandez and her Dance II and Dance Excel classes had to come up with new ways to connect with the little ones.

They created several instructional dance videos – one for third-and-fourthg r a d e r s ( h t t p s : / / w w w. w e v i d e o . c o m / view/1974508201), and one targeted to kindergarteners through second grade (https:// www.wevideo.com/view/1974453800). Each features easy-to-follow dance steps, cheerful holiday music and, best of all, the dancers’

memories of their own time in elementary school. Physical education teachers at CES, Chestnut Ridge, and Fairbanks Road Elementary Schools were able to share the videos and enjoy dancing with their students.

Hernandez even set up a live session on December 21 for her dancers to interact in real-time with CES first-graders. The Zoom session gave the younger students a chance to meet a few of their high school mentors and ask questions. Many are looking forward to being able to choose dance for PE credit or as an elective when they get to high school.

Jennifer Caccavale is the new Director of the Seymour Library in Brockport. She started on Monday, December 7, 2020, replacing Sally Snow as Interim Director. Caccavale has been a part of the Monroe County Library System for over 11 years, spending all of her career at the Penfield Public Library, starting as a page and working up to become one of their Children’s Librarians.
