Ogden Town Board recognizes Councilman Mal Perry upon retirement; appoints retired police Sergeant Sal Gerbino to fill vacancy

On Wednesday, September 28, the Ogden Town Board recognized Councilman Malcolm Perry upon his final meeting as a board member. Perry recently announced his retirement, having served since July 23, 2003. Prior to joining the town board, he served on the planning board for several years beginning on August 11, 1999.

During the meeting, the board also appointed Sal Gerbino to the newly vacated seat, effective October 3, 2022. Gerbino is a retired Sergeant of the Gates Police Department and retired Deputy of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. He is active in the community and helps coordinate the local Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run and Rochester Polar Plunge.

“We have been lucky to have such a genuine and hard-working representative on the town board for so long. Mal truly embodies what it means to be a public servant and worked diligently to help make our community a better place for all,” said Ogden

Town Supervisor Mike Zale. “I’m so thankful to Mal for his many years of selfless service to our town. I’m looking forward to working with Sal as he returns to public service in a new role. I’m confident he will do a great job on the Town Board!”

Eleventh annual Cupcakes for Cancer benefit during October at Shear Emotion

Shear Emotion Salon, located in Hilton, has been hosting a cancer benefit for over a decade. Cindy Lutwiller, owner, and her staff put their heart and soul into this annual fundraising effort to support the fight against cancer. “Many of our friends, customers, and family were fighting a cancer battle; some won, some lost, and some are still fighting.” This motivated Cindy and the Shear Emotion team to create this annual event called Cupcakes for Cancer to show support and help with the fight.

Throughout the entire month of October, Shear Emotion Salon is running a coloring contest for children (see the October 2 edition of Westside News), a 50/50 raffle, games including an M&M guess and sucker pull, giveaways of locally donated gift baskets, and the famous baked food sale. Visit the salon before October 29 to help support this

cause by participating in the month-long events. Then stop in on Saturday, October 29, for the baked goods sale with freshly baked items for purchase. The sale runs from 9 a.m. until items are sold out.

All proceeds for this month-long benefit go to Edelman-Gardner Cancer Research Foundation. Edelman-Gardner is a nonprofit foundation based in Hilton that focuses on raising money for cancer research and provides funding for research projects that will increase the quality of life, put cancer in remission, or ultimately find a cure.

They have been a strong partner of the Wilmot Cancer Institute and have given them more than $1,000,000 for Cancer Research.

Sweden receives strong NYS fiscal stress score for 2021

The NYS Comptroller monitors the fiscal health of all municipalities in the state and annually issues a report on the fiscal stress level of each municipality. The rating system is based on one hundred points in each of two categories (environmental and fiscal). The fewer the points earned the better the municipality’s fiscal strength.

The environmental stress score monitors items largely out of a town’s control: population, poverty, age, household income, unemployment. The Town of Sweden received 23.3 points which is considered “no designation.” The areas Sweden received points in were: a declining population (10 points) and the median value of owner occupied housing (13.33).

On the more relevant fiscal score card, Sweden received 3.3 out of 100 points, the same score it received the previous two years. This section monitors items such as fund balance, cash position, operating deficits, debt services, personal services, and employee benefits. “The Town of Sweden’s finances remain strong and steady,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “The steps we took during the pandemic and that we continue to take during this volatile economic climate have ensured the Town’s financial health.”

Village of Brockport Fall Brush Pickup Notice

The Department of Public Works will be conducting BRUSH ONLY pickups. Beginning Monday October 17th, 2022, the DPW will be picking up BRUSH ONLY. This service is being provided to Village residents to alleviate the continual placement of brush at curbside. There will be only 1 pass down each street and a maximum of 1 truckload of brush per residence. Do not place brush at curbsiDe until the saturDay or sunDay before the above noteDDate.

As in past years, we will continue our policy of leaving a small dump truck overnight for those who wish to load their own. Anyone wishing to use this service must call the DPW office to schedule to have a truck dropped off.

For items other than brush you should contact your refuse hauler.

Any questions may be directed to the DPW Office at 637-1060 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday or the Village Office at 637-5300 between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday- Friday.

Head-shaving event to raise funds for childhood cancer research

The Red Jug Pub in Brockport will host its second annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation signature head-shaving event to raise funds for lifesaving childhood cancer research on Sunday, October 9. With a goal of raising $10,000, over seven participants have registered to shave their head to support the foundation’s mission to fund the best research to find cures and better treatments for kids with cancer.

One in five children diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. will not survive. Those who do survive often suffer

long-term effects from treatment too harsh for their developing bodies. As the largest non-government funder of childhood cancer research grants, St. Baldrick’s Foundation is leading the charge to conquer kids’ cancer.

Seymour Library Director bids farewell

Thank you to the Town of Clarkson, Town of Sweden and the Village of Brockport communities for allowing me to lead Seymour Library and grow in both my career and through increased life experiences. I came to the Library as Director in December 2020, mid-pandemic, and inherited a community gem in need of bouncing back. With a dedicated staff and hardworking Library Board we have set Seymour Library up to succeed and move past the idle time of the epidemic. The past two years have been filled with many joy-filled events and it is bittersweet I will not be here to see through several initiatives coming soon to the Library. A highlight I am proud of is the Silver Anniversary Celebration honoring the East Avenue Library location this past December. Our community gathered along with civic leaders and staff to remember and celebrate the past 25 years of Seymour Library. Together we created a Seymour Library Time Capsule (on display at the Library) to be opened in 2046. I do hope to be a part of that future celebration unveiling the capsule.

A million thanks to the community for taking our Library survey. The results will be available at the library and it shows what a bright future Seymour Library has. In the coming weeks at Seymour Library there is much to be excited for. Our children’s librarian is launching two Literacy Programs for parents and children. Baby Dragons, for infants to 23 months and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten for preschoolers will take your child on a reading adventure like no other. Join Miss Jen on October 13 at 11 a.m. for all the fun, and come get your first introduction to our new mascot, Seymour the Book Dragon. In the coming month, Seymour’s printing service will be enhanced. The Library will be implementing a remote printing service, PrinterOn. Available to our patrons via a mobile app or from our website, you print from home and come pick it up at the print terminal station

It has been a great pleasure to serve Seymour Library. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff. Their hardworking ethic and strong support during my tenure were wonderful. Shelton, Moser inducted into Roberts Wesleyan’s

Roberts Wesleyan University welcomed two new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 24.

Dr. Kimber Shelton (Class of 2002), a standout in track and field and volleyball, and Eric Moser (Class of 1997), a basketball three-point shooter extraordinaire, were honored in a ceremony that helped cap off Homecoming Weekend.

“The Roberts Wesleyan University Athletics Hall of Fame recognizes student-athletes, coaches and contributors who have achieved tremendous success and/or have made significant contributions to the Raiders and Redhawks Athletic Department and beyond,” Executive Director of Athletics Bob Segave said. “Both Kimber and Eric are so deserving of this honor and it is my distinct pleasure to welcome them into this exclusive club.”

Shelton still holds the outdoor track and field program record for long jump (19-6 1/4) and has three top five performances in indoor track and field. She also ranks fourth in career kills (1,490) in volleyball and owns four top-three records in volleyball for kills and aces in a single game.

Shelton’s favorite memories of Roberts include riding in an airplane for the first time while traveling to NAIA’s for track and field, the preseason volleyball trip to Florida, hanging out at BT’s Café and mentoring high school students.

Shelton is a licensed psychologist, author, speaker and the owner of KLS Counseling and Consulting Services in Duncanville, Texas. She provides individual and couples counseling; while specializing in cultural diversity, LGBTQ issues, trauma and relationships. She has published two books,

Shelton and her husband, Jamal Johnson, have four-year-old twin daughters, Emma and Olive.

Moser graduated as Roberts’ career record holder for three-pointers made and threepoint shooting percentage. He set records in the Chase Lincoln tournament by making 10 three-point field goals in a single game and also owned the record for most three pointers in a single tournament with 16.

•Lusk, John W. “Jack,” age 87, died September 29, 2022. He was a son of the late John L. and Velma (Warn) Lusk and had lived in this area all of his life. Jack served in the US Navy. He worked and retired from General Motors, Rochester. Jack enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, gardening, fishing and hunting. In addition to his parents, he

Moser is a self-employed licensed pediatric physical therapist, who specialized in physical therapy services to children from birth to age two years old in Washington County, Pennsylvania, through an early intervention program. He is also a valued contractor with PathWays of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Moser and his wife, Lindsay, have five children, Brendon, Samantha, Keyan, Micah, and Caleb.

•Cleeton, Louise M., age 94, died September 26, 2022. She met her husband, Rev. Jack Cleeton, while attending Central Bible Institute in Springfield, MO. They settled in Spencerport, where Louise worked as an accountant at the Ogden Telephone Company until she retired in 1992. She cherished memories of her grandsons, shopping, and gardening with her late daughter Elaine, watching the Yankees games with her son Jack and traveling with both children to China and England. She is predeceased by her husband, Rev. Jack Cleeton and her daughter, Elaine. Louise is survived by her son Jack R. Cleeton II; grandsons Benjamin Cleeton and William Cleeton-Gandino; and son-in-law William Gandino.

Calling hours will be held at Walker Brothers Funeral Home, 15 West Avenue, Spencerport, on Sunday, October 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 10, at the Greece Assembly of God Church, 750 Long Pond Road. SUNY Brockport hosted the 17th annual Courage Bowl on October 1 and the Golden Eagles defeated St. John Fisher, 25-0, for their fifth consecutive win. The annual football game raises funds for Camp Good Days and Special Times. For the game, Camp Good Days selects honorary coaches and cheerleaders for both teams. These are Camp Good Days campers who have been diagnosed with cancer and would normally not be allowed to participate in a real football game. The Camp Good Days Courage Bowl gives these campers that opportunity. Wreaths Across America Radio hosting roundtable discussion on veteran healing

Wreaths Across America Radio has led a series of roundtable discussions focused on veteran healing through sharing stories of resilience, purpose, and success. The next discussion will take place on Thursday, October 13, at noon, and can be heard exclusively on Wreaths Across America Radio.

Brockport Rotary Club news

The Brockport Rotary Club was active over the summer with its Rotary Reads in the park, sprucing up the landscape around the U.S. Post Office, and canal clean up between the Main Street and Park Avenue bridges. The club has supported the Ecumenical Food Shelf, the Village Tree Board, BSA Troop 111, and a scholarship for a student at SUNY Brockport. Rotarians also worked with BISCO to help make the Arts Festival a success.

Project Canal Clean Up Reprise

On September 29, the Brockport Rotary Club with Rotaract students, LSU Fraternity members, SUNY Geology majors, and community members, walked along the canal picking up refuse. Club members said it was heartening to see so many people caring for the canal.

The last clean up for the season is scheduled for October 27. All are invited to help keep Brockport a beautiful place to stroll. Meet at Harvester Park on the canal side of the Welcome Center at 5 p.m. The Rotary Club will provide gloves, trash bags, and

water for volunteers. This is a good service project for youth organizations and any individuals interested in maintaining a clean environment. Members and volunteers are invited to gather at a local eatery after the clean up to celebrate a job well done.

Traffic Roundabout Plantings

The Brockport Rotary Club invites members of the community to help place native plants in the traffic roundabout on Route 19 on Sunday, October 16, between noon and 2 p.m. The area to be planted with hardy, native plants is a ten-foot diameter in the center of the circle, and will leave in place the mums that the Brockport Lions Club already planted. Those who would like to assist are asked to bring their garden gloves and small gardening hand tools. Water and snacks will be provided. The rain date is October 23. Spirits will visit Spencerport

The Ogden Historical Society’s Annual Ghost Walk is Friday, October 14, and Saturday, October 15

Enjoy an eerie stroll through the village of Spencerport and experience ghost tales – some true, and some not so true – all along the way. Local actors, in full costume, will perform the vignettes guaranteed to stir the imagination with enchanting stories of the spirit world.

The Ghost Walk is approximately one hour, with some hills and uneven surfaces along the route. It will take place, regardless of weather, and is not appropriate for young children or pets. Tickets are $5 per person. Reservations and advance payment are required. Tour times start at 6:45 p.m. each evening. Walkers meet at the Canal Depot and Museum, 16 East Avenue, Spencerport. Hamlin woman earns TOPS® recognition for weight loss

TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly SM), the nonprofit weightloss support organization, has begun unveiling its top “royalty” from 2021 for 2022. TOPS® royalty are women and men who, at the end of the year, have officially recorded the largest weight loss from their starting weight, regardless of the time taken to reach their goal. Susan Reynolds of Hamlin, who lost 93.75 pounds, and Paul Wilson of Port Leyden, who lost 48 pounds, are the 2021 New York Queen and King. They were honored at the New York recognition event on June 4 in Auburn.

TOPS provides an individual approach to weight loss and overall wellness. Consistent group support, health education, and recognition are all key components to successful weight management. New York has an adult obesity rate of 26.3%. During 2021, TOPS members in New York lost a cumulative 9,630 pounds.

“Through their participation in TOPS, we are extremely proud of our TOPS® members’ weight-loss accomplishments,” said TOPS President Rick Danforth, who has maintained a 100-pound weight loss for more than 15 years. “Celebrating the life-changing achievements of not only these individuals but those who have come before them is a hallmark of TOPS’ winning formula. Visitors can attend their first TOPS in-person meeting free of charge and encouraged to try more than one chapter, since they’re all a little different.

For online membership, virtual meetings are conducted via Zoom and are offered at least three times during the week. The meeting starts with members disclosing challenges, successes, or goals. Next, the online facilitator presents a prepared program and sometimes includes guest speakers who share their expert views on fitness, nutrition, and more. Meetings conclude with action steps related to the program presented.

Hilton High School senior Gabrielle Hix has been named a semifinalist in the 2023 National Merit® Scholarship Program based on her scores for the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT) last fall. Gabrielle is part of an elite group of approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide who now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for more than 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered in spring 2023. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.

Rochester Oratorio Society to perform “The Ordering of Moses”

The Rochester Oratorio Society will perform “The Ordering of Moses” at Hochstein Performance Hall in Rochester on Thursday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The piece is by R. Nathaniel Dett, who was the first Black graduate of the Eastman School of Music, president of the Rochester NAACP, and director of music at Trinity Presbyterian (now Trinity Emmanuel) and Two Saints Episcopal churches. He was also a mentor to Rochester’s William Warfield.

Dett completed “The Ordering of Moses” in 1937, having begun it as his master’s thesis at Eastman. The oratorio’s rich, emotional orchestration offers a symbolist portrait of Moses from the burning bush up to his deliverance of the Israelites through the Red Sea.

The concert will feature Eastman graduates Alexis Peart, Holden Turner, and Christina Faye, as well as School of the Arts graduate Emmett Tross. Sarah Joyce Cooper and Thomas Warfield round out the cast of featured artists.

The Rochester Oratorio Society Chorus and Orchestra will be joined by the the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Canada’s first professional choral group dedicated to Afrocentric music of all styles, and their director, Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, as well as The Roberts Wesleyan Chorale, directed by Adam Potter.
