Village of Brockport Celebrates Arbor Day with tree planting A cold final day of April with gale force winds didn’t stop the Arbor Day tree planting in Corbett Park. Early that morning, Brockport’s DPW delivered 16 trees to their respective locations, digging the holes for each with their tree planting power auger. A DEC urban forestry grant paid for the removal of 30 dead ash trees from Corbett Park and the new replacement plantings of Tupelos, London Planetrees, Tulip trees, and Pink Horse Chestnuts. Later that morning, the Village Tree Board gathered at the park, joined by volunteer tree planters from SUNY Brockport’s women’s field hockey and basketball teams and their coaches, members of the Village Board, the Village Manager and
Mayor, County Legislator Jackie Smith, the Parks Committee, and some Corbett Park neighbors. Brockport’s Region 4 DEC forester, Gary Koplun, made an appearance before heading to another Arbor Day celebration in Rochester. Since 2006, the village has partnered with the college for its Arbor Day event. The college facilities crew arrived with shovels, demonstrated to the volunteers how to plant a tree, and supervised the planting. Kevin Rice, Director of Facilities Maintenance and Operations at SUNY Brockport, represented the college at the event. Before the tree planting, Bill Heyen, internationally recognized poet and SUNY Brockport emeritus, was persuaded to read his “Emancipation Proclamation,” the Tree

Board’s favorite tree poem. Hanny Heyen, a 20-year member of the Parks Committee and its former chair, was honored on Arbor Day with a certificate of recognition for her contributions to Brockport’s parks. The volunteers scattered to their trees, and within an hour, had planted all 16 trees. Tree Board members tied colorful laminated “Hug a Tree” signs to several different species of mature park trees inviting the youngest visitors to Corbett Park to become tree huggers. One read, “Hi, I’m a Littleleaf Linden. The Vikings used my wood to make shields. Today it’s used for pencils—boooring! Spread the love and give me a hug.” Provided information Photos by Ashley Gray

Reimagine RTS transit system redesign launches May 17 Regional Transit Service (RTS) will launch Reimagine RTS, the redesign of the transit system in Monroe County on May 17, 2021. Reimagine RTS was initially planned for implementation on June 29, 2020 but was postponed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. RTS CEO Bill Carpenter said, “The design of the reimagined transit system was based on the hard work of the RTS team and the input of more than 12,000 people through surveys and more than 200 meetings and events throughout the community. The new system will be more frequent, reliable and connected and we are excited to bring it to life for our customers. I thank the team at RTS for
their continued work on this project and I thank our customers for their patience and understanding as we have worked together to navigate the pandemic.” Some changes of local interest include Brockport becoming an RTS On Demand Zone and Route 106 serving Hilton/Hamlin/ Clarkson becoming Route 92 Hilton/Hamlin Commuter. Route 94 Brockport Commuter riders will have service to the connection hub at Rochester Tech Park and can transfer to the new Route 19 Buffalo Road for service to the RTS Transit Center. This route will operate once in each direction during the a.m. and p.m. peak periods. At other times, customers can use the RTS On Demand
service within the Brockport Community Mobility Zone which includes the village of Spencerport. RTS On Demand is a mobility option in which ADA-accessible vehicles provide service on demand within specific On Demand Zones. Use RTS On Demand for curb-to-curb service, or meet RTS Connect service and other transportation options at a Connection Hub or bus stop. Customers can book rides up to 12 hours in advance through the On Demand app, myRTS.com or by calling Customer Service.
The new Route 92 will connect customers traveling from Hilton, Hamlin, and Clarkson to the Eastman Avenue connection hub. At the hub, customers will be able to transfer to Routes 21 Dewey, 22 Lake, or 40 Ridge Crosstown. This route will operate two trips during the a.m. peak period and two trips in the p.m. peak period. Customers are encouraged to visit https://reimagine.myrts.com/ to get acquainted with the coming changes to the system. This includes how routes will change and details of RTS On Demand service.
